  3. While looking around for a pocket PC in Harvey Norman, I came across ASUS Eee PC which looks something like a cheap/small laptop. It costs as low as a pocket PC (price is less than $600). Has anyone used it here? How is your experience with this unit?
  4. Does anyone have contacts for data recovery? Went to Sim Lim and kenna scared off when 3 different shops have conflicting diagnosis (some say virus, some say HDD spoil and another one say the password mgr corrupted...) and quoted some unbelievable fees up to $400. I am IT noob but not noob until like that. Not worried abt privacy stuff as the lappy is used to do word processing and generate letters.
  5. Hey Bros.. i am going into ntu this coming aug. 7. I'm researching my options. Currently on XP SP3. My usage is mostly internet, Photo Editing, MS office and entertainment (video/music) . I'm a boring person, i don't game If i were to get a new laptop, which should i choose? my first choice of OS would have been XP pro, but the dell online store does not offer that option. I'm pretty much set on a dell if i'm getting a windows system. is it possible to get a dell with XP? i'm not too keen on the vostro line which is more for business usage. I have struck off the following brands: acer, compaq/hp, fujitsu, toshiba, IBM/lenovo. . not much choice left is there? sony is ex and not heard much abt NEC. alternatively, mac.. cos i've heard so much good stuff about it and i have tried it myself, though i prefer windows, actually. my main concerns here are stability and graphics editing prowess. the only thing against mac for me, is the rather steep price. but if it really performs better, then i think the extra $ is worthwhile. btw, i'm not tt much of a gadget freak. my only "gadgets" are my laptop and DSLR, which i use in my course of work. i don't own ipod or whatever. chio factor is but a slight bonus EDIT: oh yes, one more thing, i want an all-in-one but portable system. because i do not intend to use a desktop. e.g. for mac, i'm thinking macbook pro (15" screen) instead of the 17" version. i'll probably get an external LCD for my photo editing and ....
  8. On 13 March, I bought a Acer Travelmate 6292, less than week on the 17 March, Monday, the laptop can't boot up press power button not working. The next day went to the service center surprising the staff at the service center is able to boot up my computer and everything is working fine just that the time is not synced. The service person did some troubleshooting like removing and put back the ram maybe it's not sit properly and he say it will be nice if i left my laptop overnight at the service center for a more throughout check so i did left my laptop there for a more precise check on it. Yesterday, I received by laptop with a service report claimed that everything is working fine no problem. 10 minutes ago, when i try to switch on again not responding tried everything with battery and without battery still fail to switch on. This laptop really pissed me off I am going down to the service center on Saturday for a refund totally have no confidence in Acer products anymore.
  9. A BRITON who has lived here for 11 years got a rude shock when he turned on his Hewlett-Packard (HP) laptop, only to be flashed a message saying that its copy of Windows XP was a bootleg one. Mr Anthony Jeff, 56, had just picked up the machine from an HP-authorised service centre in Guangzhou, China, where he was on a business trip. His bought-in-Singapore laptop kept crashing during the trip, so the globe-trotting businessman sent it to an HP-authorised service centre there, since the machine had a limited international warranty. The service centre told him that it did not have any more stock of the English version of Windows XP software, and that the default version used in China was the one in Chinese, but Mr Jeff insisted on having an English version installed. An HP spokesman said: 'The engineer was under pressure and downloaded an English version from the Web without obtaining a licence from Microsoft.' Mr Jeff, who was not told this, discovered it only when he turned on the machine. 'Fortunately for me, I did not turn on the laptop in front of my clients that day. It would have been utterly embarrassing for me,' he said. He runs day2daytrading, a maker of decorative furniture and licensed toys like Buck Rogers, and is married to a Singaporean. Mr Jeff returned to confront the service centre staff the next day, only to be taken aback by their nonchalance. He was told it was 'normal' in China because 'everyone uses copies'. HP has since clarified that it gives strict guidelines to its authorised service centres against installing illegal copies of operating systems. Its spokesman added that the company took the matter seriously, and that it would discipline the engineer and 'reiterate the importance of our service policy to all our partners'. China has been in the spotlight for its rampant software piracy over the years, but industry observers say the incident was not about piracy but a failure in HP's support service. Mr Tarun Sawney, anti-piracy director for the software piracy watchdog Business Software Alliance Asia, said: 'Using an unlicensed product key to download software is definitely illegal, but this is the first time I've heard of a service centre doing something like this.' Technology lawyer Bryan Tan said: 'The attitude of the service centre reflects the general lackadaisical attitude in China towards using genuine software.' Meanwhile, HP Singapore has settled the matter with Mr Jeff: It has paid for his return air ticket to China on business class, repaired his old laptop, given him a new one and also an HP iPaq smartphone. Mr Jeff is happy with the way the company has resolved his problem. He remains an HP fan - and not because of its compensatory moves. When he had to buy a new laptop in China after the one with the illegal Windows XP could not work, he chose an HP.

  11. After 2 years, my laptop battery is now at its half life. It now lasts 1and half hours instead of the 3 hours when i first bought the laptop. Contacted the service center and found out that a replacement battery costs 190 dollars Wanted to ask if there is any cheaper alternatives out there like third party batteries. Heard that there is some kind of battery cells renewal or something like that?
  12. Hi folks, My singnet broadband plan is expiring soon and currently I am considering a recontract with the current speed of 3Mbps. I am not a heavy user, so 3M is adequate. My friend then ask why not I consider getting the 10Mbps plan instead. Since it comes with free Dell laptop and a wireless modem....I believe this is the MIO box from 2WIRE? I already have a desktop and a laptop at home...together with my company's laptop, my wife, kid and myself will each have a computer so I dun really need a new laptop. My friend then suggested that I sell the laptop in ebay. This is the specs of the laptop: DELL
