Synopsis: The Straits Times' opinion editor Grace Ho takes a hard look at political and social issues of the day with her expert guests. In this episode, the first of two parts, she looks at whether a family of four in Singapore needs $6,426 a month for a basic standard of living. In the studio to explain the study and its methodology are Associate Professor Teo You Yenn of the School of Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University; and Dr Ng Kok Hoe, Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Case Study Unit at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Highlights (click/tap above): 00:41: Is there a household budget that captures the lived realities of Singaporeans? What is the Minimum Income Standard? 04:55: Addressing criticisms of the study and its methodology 10:00 How is the Minimum Income Standard applied in the United Kingdom, and how does the UK decide what is a living wage? https://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/thinking-aloud-6426-a-month-for-basic-standard-of-living-study-on-family-budgets-must-be Does a family of 4 really need $6,426 a month for a basic standard of living? It depends It is about what people feel they need to be socially accepted, not just what they can afford For a few years, money at home was tight. I did not go on overseas field trips or to the cinema, and made excuses to skip class gatherings at restaurants. Each missed activity meant one less shared experience and common talking point - and one step closer to feeling as if I did not belong. This is where the minimum income standard (MIS) approach, which relies on public consensus and not just expert opinion, comes in.
  4. I was diagnosed my blood has high platelet count five years ago and the condition has evolved to life-threatening level. High platelet makes the blood thick which can result in stroke or heart attack. My Bone marrow keeps producing excessive platelet. I have been on aspirin last five years for diluting the blood but there is no significant help. There is no medication can control bone marrow in platelet production (in reducing it). Normal platelet count is 150-450. My reading was 580 five years ago and risen to current 1001 last week. I have been seeing a Hematologist in SGH last five years, blood test on quarterly basis, one aspirin a day. i am told my condition is very rare. I am 53 y/o. my blood pressure and cholestrol level are normal. No diabetics. I know i have to look for alternatives and more opinions. i went to chong hwa toa payoh last night but there is no specialist there knows how to treat my condition. I was prescribed some medications and had 30-mins of acupuncture. i am looking for some real experience in treating high platelet count problem. my life is in danger. Please help to recommend / share anything you know including specialist / medication recommendation. I will be very grateful of it. THANK YOU.

  6. McLaren 600LT by MSO revealed ahead of Pebble Beach debuthttps://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mclaren-600lt-mso-revealed-ahead-pebble-beach-debut McLaren will be heading to this week’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with a bespoke version of its new 600LT. Showcasing a raft of personalisation options from the Woking brand’s MSO (McLaren Special Operations) division, the concept follows on from the first public outing of the 600LT at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month. Featuring MSO Bespoke Stealth Grey paintwork, the 600LT receives a number of carbonfibre upgrades, including an F1 Longtail-inspired air intake scoop mounted on the roof. Three carbonfibre upgrade packs also feature, with the material being used for the door mirrors and door inserts, as well as the front splitter, rear bumper, diffuser and engine cover. An ‘MSO Defined’ carbonfibre roof and front wing louvres are also part of the package. The new parts are said to reduce weight, although McLaren hasn’t disclosed how much lighter the MSO version is than the regular 600LT. Gloss black 10-spoke wheels complete the look. Inside, lightweight carbonfibre seats are sourced from the McLaren Senna, with orange contrast stitching. Six-point harnesses also feature, while a carbonfibre transmission tunnel and door inserts and an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins sound system are showcased. Detail touches to the interior include bespoke embroidery in the headrests, ‘600LT’ etching on the throttle pedals and even a set of hand-painted keys. The 600LT’s performance is unchanged over the standard car, with a 592bhp twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 taking it from 0-62mph in 2.8sec and on to a top speed of 204mph.
  7. hmmmmmmm sth brewing? @tianmo https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/a-level-results-students-apply-polytechnic-skip-semester-courses-11245456 Singapore A-Level results out next Friday; graduates who opt for polytechnics can skip semester image: data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw== File photo of students at Singapore Polytechnic. (Photo: TODAY) 15 Feb 2019 11:22AM (Updated: 15 Feb 2019 12:21PM) Share this content BookmarkSINGAPORE: The results of the GCE A-Level examinations will be released next Friday (Feb 22), the Ministry of Education (MOE) said on Friday. Students may collect their results from their schools from 2.30pm on that day, while private candidates will be notified of their results by post. The ministry also announced on Friday that A-Level graduates who choose to further their studies at polytechnics can now skip the first semester for more than 100 courses. Currently, most A-Level graduates apply for and enrol in a polytechnic only one year after getting their results. This is because most polytechnic admissions exercises would have closed by the time the A-Level results are announced. READ: O-Level grades will no longer form part of admission scores for Poly grads applying to NUS, NTU from 2020From Academic Year 2019, eligible A-Level graduates can be admitted directly to Year 1 Semester 2 each October for 110 polytechnic courses, up from the current nine. This will reduce their polytechnic course from three years to two-and-a-half years. Advertisement The 110 courses make up about half the diploma courses offered by the five polytechnics, and span several course clusters. “A-Level graduates who are not enlisting in National Service will be able to enter the polytechnics in the same year that they receive their A-Level results. As a result, this group will be able to graduate one year earlier,” MOE said. image: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/image/11245562/0x0/819/511/72007b68a9c769b719a86efa69bb462d/Df/polytechnic-admission-for-a-level-infographic.jpg Source: Ministry of Education Interested A-Level graduates will be able to apply to the polytechnics directly for these 110 courses in mid-August, for matriculation at the start of AY2019 Semester 2 in October this year. More details will be available on the respective polytechnics’ websites by March 2019. 200 A-LEVEL GRADUATES ENROL IN POLYTECHNICS ANNUALLY Places for A-Level graduates will be separately catered for, and there will be no impact on the number of places for O-Level graduates or ITE graduates, MOE said. "The number of places for A-Level graduates will depend on the demand from and quality of applicants, and hence will vary from year to year," it said. According to the ministry, about 200 A-Level graduates are admitted each year to the five local polytechnics – Nanyang, Ngee Ann, Republic, Singapore and Temasek. "These are students who are keen to pursue an applied pathway at the polytechnics, that matches their area of interest or aptitude," it said, adding that the number includes both A-Level graduates who have applied and those who did not apply to the local universities. READ: Better pay, job prospects for polytechnic graduates in 2018: SurveyFor most polytechnic courses, A-Level graduates would need passes in two relevant H2 subjects to receive module exemptions. These requirements may differ for specific courses. Courses which offer module exemption have "sufficient commonalities" between the A-Level and polytechnic curriculums, MOE said. The exemptions are mostly for polytechnic foundational modules, and students would have covered similar curriculum in preparing for the A-Levels. For example, A-Level graduates in Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Diploma in Information Technology may be exempted from the modules on Computing Mathematics and Programming 1 if they have passed H2 Computing or Computing Science, and H2 Mathematics. Similarly, A-Level graduates in Temasek Polytechnic’s Common Engineering Programme may be exempted from the modules on Engineering Mathematics 1, Engineering Physics, Digital Fundamentals 1 and Circuit Analysis if they have passed H2 Mathematics and H2 Physics. 8. Of late, my last few checks on my engine oil dipstick showed that my engine oil level has increased. This was first discovered about a month ago. There are 2 tips on the dipstick. I noticed that since last month, the oil level has exceeded the upper tip of the dipstick. First check was in the morning when the engine was cold for more than 8 hours since the car was parked the night before. Did 2 further checks over the course of last few weeks. Level was above the upper tip. The increase was not slightly or too much during those cold or room temperature. There was also no oil leakage found. However, when the car was driven and parked for a few hours, the oil level exceeded the upper tip by a bigger length (of course engine was still slightly hot and this is understandable). Not sure whether this should be cause for concern. I know that if oil level drops, we need to take note or go workshop to top up by the same grade and brand engine oil. But for my case, it increases..... I am using OWS NA engine oil. No grade was stated. First time trying this oil. Been using it for more than 8,500km mileage. My car's mileage is more than 86,000 km. Hope to have some views from knowledgeable bros in this forum. Thanks!

  10. I think there must be a engine internal oil leakage causing oil from somewhere? in the upper parts of the engine to very slowly leak down into the sump. But what could that be ? ? ? It's an Astra-G with a Isuzu 1.7 diesel, fairly standard/simple engine I think. It does have a turbo, and a EGR valve. There's no other faults or symptoms. The Haynes? book says I should measure the oil level 10 minutes after halting, so that's what I've done, and it's half a liter above min (or half a liter below max if you like) 10 minutes after halting. But if I then come back a couple of hours later, it's aprox half a liter above max ! ? ? I'm fairly sure it was not like that before, and this is my second Astra with this engine. Before this I had oil and filter change of course. Could it be one of the oil filter gaskets ? Or a not quite compatible filter ?. Also before this, I had a too high oil level so I sucked out a little bit using a break fluid vacum pump/hose through the dip-stick (simple and easy). And at the same time before this I had an EGR-error indication, so I had the EGR out (for the second time), cleaned it, tested it, and put it back in. If that was because of too much oil or just ordinary usage I don't know. It's quite a bit of work and I had to do it a couple of years before as well, so I'm generally taking care not to have too much oil on the engine. But I don't measure the volume I pour into it. I just fill it up and check the dip-stick. ... So maybe that's how I got too much. So now, I'm using the car with maybe half a liter too much, but if I check it 10 minutes after halting, it's just perfect. There's no other faults ! ...... Power and performance is o.k. / as normal, and coolant level is steady an nice,... there's no other symptoms that I know of. The level is always the same (except as mentioned). These Y17DT engines (of which this is my second) both had oil leakage from the cam shaft sealing (and possibly some of the other seals as well), causing the register belt to be soaked in oil (but still running though), so for both I had to change the seals, and thereafter I generally didn't have any problems with the engine. Except for the Astra-G version which had a seal in the generator as well (between the vacum pump and the generator) that was of course leaking as well, and this #¤%" EGR on the Astra-G, and the ECM needing replacement on the Astra-G,... but the engine itself is, apart from this, generally quite nice. By the way, also now (and not before),... there is oil long up the dip stick after taking it out, and I have to clean it lower it and pull it up again. I don't think it was like that before. ?. ............
  11. Seems like the gambling ( legal type) have increased with the economic boom we are currently experiencing. I can see more ppl spending more than desirable in placing bets for various forms of gambling availiable under legal betting houses and the authorities are really not addressing the issue well or keeping a control of ppl from getting addicted. By personal view is that if one would to consistently spend more than $50 per month on bets of any kind , it would be considered that there is a HIGH POSSIBILITY OF A GAMBLING ADDICTION IN THAT PERSON. But I get different views of what qualifies as a gambling addiction of the ppl I had asked. What's your view?
  12. Fellow bros, I'm current driving an avante. Just went for servicing on sat n I did the following. Basic servicing(engine oil and filter changed) Coolant changed Brake oil changed Spark plug replaced Atf oil changed After the servicing, drove out wif family to spend our weekend. Sun went JB n as usual stuck in the jam as well. Mon when I checked the car, found out that the coolant in the secondary tank dropped closed to half. Opened up the radiator and found the coolant level Oso dropped. So I top up wif water for both side and drove off... For the next 2 days, the level at the radiator dropped but the level at the secondary tank remains the same. So I drove bk to the ws today. They tested and jacked up the car n no leakage was found. They came to a conclusion that during the time when they topped up the coolant, it's actually not full yet so the level will tends to drop and it will stablised once the coolant is really full.... I've decided to take a few more days to monitor, but is there any truth in wat they said? Considering the fact that during the weekend I've drove a lot and the coolant shld haf stablised till then...

  14. Read this today in The New Paper (someone posted a link earlier but it was hidden amongst other things.) Thought that this is important reading for all the parents here ---------------- She is still coming to terms with the devastating death of her teenage granddaughter, who committed suicide over scoring two Bs in her O levels. Then, three months after the 16-year-old plunged to her death, Madam Ng Siang Mui's grief-stricken and guilt-ridden daughter, who was the teen's mother, also killed herself. The tragic double deaths has left her son-in-law, who is the teen's father, mentally unstable. Fortunately, more children and teenagers have been seeking help for suicidal thoughts, said the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS). In an interview with The New Paper, Madam Ng, 71, shared the devastation and anguish of the triple tragedy that began in January this year. She was reluctant to speak at first, noting that the death had torn the family apart. Madam Ng initially said: "Talking to you now is useless. My daughter is dead. My granddaughter is dead." She changed her mind later because she hoped that sharing their story could help highlight early intervention and save more lives. Madam Ng said that in January, just three hours after getting her results slip, her granddaughter jumped to her death. Except for two Bs - in English and Mathematics - the student had scored distinctions for her other subjects. The only child left a note for her parents: "Mum, I am sorry for being a disappointment. I should have done better. "Dad, I am sorry you will not have the chance to walk me down the (church) aisle to give me away." The child's parents used to fight over their daughter's education. The girl had been a straight-As student who attended a top school. The mum wanted to push her to excel and her dad felt that the child should be left alone. "My Xiao Mei (her granddaughter's nickname) was always affected whenever her parents fought over her studies," Madam Ng said in Khek. At Madam Ng's request, we are not naming the parents or their child. Madam Ng said: "My son-in-law felt very sorry for his daughter. He used to approach me to help him talk to my daughter, to ask her not to push Xiao Mei too hard. He felt that they should let Xiao Mei be, as she was a good girl. "Whenever I tried to broach the issue with my daughter, she'd get angry and tell me not to interfere with the way she wanted to bring her child up. "She often compared Xiao Mei's results with those of her friends' children and would ask, 'How come so and so can do this and you cannot?'" Xiao Mei's mother wanted her to get into medical school. A family friend, Mrs Lynn Wee, 45, a housewife, spoke of how she and three other close friends had tried to keep watch over Xiao Mei's mother after the funeral. Mrs Wee said: "She maintained a stoic front and even admitted that she would have been disappointed with her child's academic performance." But that facade slowly slipped in the weeks that followed, said Madam Ng, who has three grandsons from two other children. Madam Ng said that a month after Xiao Mei's death, her father moved out. "That broke my daughter's heart. I think it was then that she, too, gave up living. "When Xiao Mei died, I didn't just lose one child. Her mother, my own daughter, killed herself three months later." Madam Ng recalled the conversation she had with her daughter a day before she killed herself. "She told me, 'Ma, I shouldn't have pressurised Xiao Mei in her studies. You didn't do that to us when we were young and we all turned out fine'." The New Paper understands that Xiao Mei's father is seeking psychiatric help. Added Madam Ng: "If only we had noticed or realised that Xiao Mei was suffering, we could have asked for professional help and this tragedy would have been prevented." When Xiao Mei died, I didn't just lose one child. Her mother, my own daughter, killed herself three months later. - Madam Ng Siang Mui http://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore-news/straight-student-commits-suicide-over-o-level-results-mum-takes-her-own-life#sthash.8jIPRfol.dpuf
  15. Hi guys, just want to rant out something that our day to day job. For example, Project A. A certain individual (Mid Level) requested for further insights / analysis on project A where completed . The said project was handled by internal stakeholders and external stakeholders. Given that the project A was aired within external stakeholder's inventories , they will have a lot insights/data. External stakeholders sent very raw insights (in excel) to internal stakeholders where not very much helps on analysis which could help on phase B of the said project. The "individual(Mid level) asked for more insights from extenal stakeholders, this shxt arse said "Sorry , we don't provide this, usually in excel only ". The "individual" du lan, and feedback this to his superior. His superior sent a email to the external stakeholder requesting for further insights from the "individual" email thread. The said external stakeholder kia si , leg turn jelly already and replied they will expedite anyway they can from this. Do you guys face this issue too and how do you deal with this people ? There is this chinese term somewhat called : Go Nian Kan Ren Dee !

  17. Daekyo Eye Level Singapore Eye Level is an individualised, self-directed learning programme. Guidance and planning provided to the child is customised according to each student’s unique skills and abilities. As such, we believe that if we were to direct students based on their “eye level”, their learning will be more effective. In a traditional classroom setting, however, as the teacher has to cater his/her teaching to the majority of the class (i.e. the average students), students whose skills are below average will be left out. Conversely, students whose skills are above average will find lessons boring. In the Math programme, not only are students exposed to Basic Thinking Math, they are also challenged to Critical Thinking Math - logical and critical Math problems. Critical Thinking Math enhances problem solving and spatial sense right from the very beginning. PlayMath (for ages 3 to 5) encourages hands-on learning. Each book used in every lesson are specifically tailored to enhance the child’s psychomotor skills and learning mathematical concepts by playing, folding, listening to stories, using of stickers. PlayMath encompasses a child’s every needs in embarking into the realms of Mathematics. Developed with UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), Eye Level’s English programme encompasses the four primary skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. By enhancing high frequency vocabulary and grammar points; and repeated exposure as the level goes higher, the English programme ensures retention within the child. The Chinese Junior programme was developed with Beijing University specifically with dual immersion environment in mind. The programme uses games, chants and songs to stimulate learning in the lower levels, and morphs incrementally into conversational and writing. All programmes have a structured progression, and have compartmentalised topics, hence allowing micro-repetition (within the topic) should there be a need. Also, a diagnostic test is administered prior to the start of the programme, so Instructor can pinpoint the start the child’s level, right down to the booklet, within that level. Our programmes – Maths, English, Play Math and Chinese Jr - are recommended for students between 3 and 14 years old. However, 80% of our students are between 3 and 10 years old. 18. Christ....what a shiatte-storm this is becoming. --- http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/...412-273173.html Japan upgrades nuclear emergency level to seven AFP Tue, Apr 12, 2011 TOKYO - Japan upgraded its nuclear emergency to a maximum seven on an international scale of atomic crises on Tuesday, the first time the ranking has been invoked since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The incident at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was sparked by last month's earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 13,000 people, with around 14,500 people still missing. The regrading to a "major accident" puts Fukushima on a par with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, the world's worst ever peacetime nuclear event. The meltdown at Chernobyl in the then Soviet Union spewed a large volume of toxic radiation, poisoning large areas of land and affecting thousands of lives.

  20. America's Cup, the worlds oldest sporting trophy between nations, started on the weekend. Shown on Fox Sports. The racing is fast and intense, but the boats are just down right amazing. Averaging 35+ knots (or 65km/h) around the course. The pictures speak for themselves...

  24. My brother noticed something interesting a few weeks ago, but I never got around to writing about it. (Sorry, I've just been really busy!) A CISCO vehicle was parked very precariously along Upper East Coast Road, as follows. I don't know the traffic rules, but apparently this is illegal, and kind of dangerous. So my brother called the Police, who told him to call LTA, I think- who said that they would issue a summons. I believe my brother even jokingly asked whether they were really going to do anything about it, and asked if he should put pictures on Facebook- to which whoever answered supposedly said, Sure, carry on, go ahead. Well, my brother returned that night, and noticed that the Cisco vehicle had reversed a little. But wait, there's more! Can you see it? There's a traffic summons! Wow, Cisco is really on the ball, huh? But wait
