  2. Choose your words carefully. The last thing you say to someone could be the last thing they ever hear as there is no promise for tomorrow Life is too short. Laugh when you can, apologize when you should and let go of the things you cannot change Even the prettiest flower will wilt one day. It's nature's way of teaching us that nothing lasts forever When you're gone, you're gone forever. You only live once. Live exactly how you want to be remembered
  3. How would you do it? How would you change it? What do you regret? I dunno. Been feeling a bit melancholic. looking at the world around me and the disturbances. Does not help that I lost a dear friend last week, to haemorrhage, young only 42! I guess, I would think again about making an impact on the lesser lives and doing some form of mission work. The rat race has kinda forced me to do many things agst my will sometimes...... No solid thinking, but just seeing how my life could be different.
  4. Went to sakaru buffet yesterday. sitting beside a family of China ppl. We arrived at the same time and they are rowdy man! well, they don q and took quite a lot of food, maybe they thought can only take 1 time. anyways, i saw them taking a lot of japanes food like salmon, clams, etc. and they were sitting for a good 10 mins with the food infront of them. i was wondering what are they waiting for until i heard them asking the waiter in Chinglish " whare sting boat?" the waitier looked at them and said"no steamboat, buffet, take and eat." chinman. "how eat no cooks......" the waier shaked his head and said, japanese food no cook" Chnaman."no(s) cooks!" after that the waiter walked away. and i heard the china family said in mandarin" no cook how to eat. Haiyo!" apparently they have never seen or ate japanes food before. They threw the dishes at the the next table and went off to take "cooked" food. again, table full of food and some they don even touch after 1 bite.... cannot tahan!

  8. S'porean woman marries dying hubby in hospital Tuesday, Jun 19, 2012 The New Paper By Maureen Koh They registered their marriage 13 years ago, but this couple never had the chance to have a traditional wedding. But as the gravely ill man lay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the National University Hospital (NUH), deejays from Radio 1003, Singapore Press Holding's Chinese language station, swung into action, and made their wish come true two weeks ago. The radio station's programme director Carine Ang said: "It was such a touching moment... everyone present was moved to tears." It started with an SMS sent to the radio station by Madam Chua Mui Mui in April, wishing her husband a happy wedding anniversary. Madam Chua, 37, also revealed that her husband, Mr Tay Guan Yeow, 44, had felt bad all these years for not giving her the wedding of her dreams. After her message was read out on air, listeners called in with offers to help the couple have their wedding pictures taken. At the time, no one knew that the childless couple - who sell roasted meats at an industrial area in the western part of Singapore - were going through a harrowing situation. Mr Tay was suffering from kidney failure. He had been diagnosed just two years after they registered their marriage, in 1999, when she was 24 and he was 31. Battling his illness, they had put off the traditional dinner and wedding photos. Until Madam Chua's heartfelt message to the radio station. Offers of kindness The offers poured in. But the couple initially hesitated. Madam Chua, explains: "We were a little worried, and then because we had delayed responding to the offers, we didn't think more about it." Then, on June 5, Mr Tay's condition worsened and he was rushed to NUH. Doctors told Madam Chua that he might not pull through. It prompted her to send another SMS to the radio station's hotline. In the message, she asked: "If we want to take wedding photos, would it be too late? My husband has just been admitted to ICU." Ms Ang said the minute their duty deejay received the message, everyone was galvanised into action. She says: "Our hearts dropped. We wanted to do something for the couple, especially because we knew that Mr Tay was a loyal 1003 supporter. "We wanted to do whatever we could to make their wish come true." By 8pm, the team, which included deejay Tan Yan Wei and Ms Ang, had secured a rent-free gown from My Wedding Affair and complimentary photography. A nurse helped take Madam Chua's measurements so that they'd get the right gown size, and the team rushed down to the hospital. There was hardly a dry eye in the ICU when the bride walked in, resplendent in her gown. As she bent over over her husband, Madam Chua asked him: "Am I pretty? Are you happy?" Tears flowed freely as Mr Tay said yes, and handed a bouquet of flowers to his wife. 'I will live for him' Ms Ang said that those who witnessed the simple ceremony included Mr Tay's family members and Madam Chua's two younger sisters. After the ceremony, the groom told everyone: "I'm sorry that we don't have anything to give you." "But if I am discharged, I will definitely bring snacks and roast meats to the radio station." Madam Chua says she believes her husband, who had his left leg and right toes amputated earlier this year, is hanging on for her. She admits that some friends and family members have asked her why she stayed on with her sick husband, whom they view as a yoke around her neck. She says: "I don't get it, how can he be a burden to me? We exchanged vows and there's this line, 'In sickness and in health'. "How can we forget this line? It's never occurred to me that I should abandon him." In a recording that Mr Tay did for the radio station, he said: "This whole life, I loved only Chua Mei Mei. (There will be) no other choices and no regrets. I will love her forever and ever. "Whether it's in life or in death, I will also miss her. Even though I will leave first, I want her to go on living and carry on with her life." To which, Madam Chua says: "Some people have asked me what are my plans for the future. "I don't know. I've not thought about it. Just as my husband is keeping strong for me, I will do the same for him. "I will live for him."

    Hebal Life?

Is there a convention of herbal life in town? Saw many of them carrying the bags in orchard road these few days. Anyone knows what is it?
  10. I see people all around me struggling more than usual to make ends meet. Costs of basic commodities and essentials in life has gone up such as electricity, gas and water. These increases are usually in excess of the raw materials costs increase as well. Having a simple meal nowadays in the hawker centre cost easily more than 30-50% as compared to a few years back and if you are a family of 4-5 this means a fair amount of increment in your monthly expenses for which your income has not risen to meet. Someone wrote that most of these increases are, aside from the price increase of raw ingredients and materials, more that of rent and operation costs. The person went on to argue that more than 60% of rented properties belong to HDB, URA and other government linked organisations, can the authorities take a closer look at the state of affairs on the ground to see the hardships that are being caused as a result of this trickle down effect all these high overheads and yearly good-pat-in-the-back profit reports? The irony of it all is that we can clearly see all this profits are derived at the expense of a brutal drive for profits at every level of the game including cutbacks in key operations and maintenance of public conveniences such as transports and for example public waterworks and drainage. I think in the years to come, more native Singaporeans will have to seriously consider finding another place to call their home and live out their golden years. How else can your pittance savings last you especially if you have been displaced by FTs who are being brought in indiscriminately by the truckloads and also the high elder healthcare and other related living expenses? Ministers who make more than $120K a month not inclusive their fat bonuses cannot understand this and at most do lip service solving of problems without the drive or competency to get down to the root of the problem to better the lives of the people. Someone said it very aptly when he commented that if you make more than $1 million a year, you are disconnected with the people and the problems the man in the street faces. The rich only take care of themselves while the poor struggles to just put bread on the table, such is the disparity of life. Quite sad and make it sickening really to watch ceremonies when they come on stage to give useless thesis quality speeches and awards to each other for a job allegedly well done.
  11. Assuming as it is. That is, CPI remains at exactly like this for the rest of your life. Yes, comfortable is subjective, driving a BnB maybe comfortable to some, but not to others. This I know, so it's up to your own definition. Not trying to judge or anything. I'm just curious about the level of expectations for the people in this forum. For me.....I think $120K should be quite reasonable. You don't have to reveal what you chose if you don't want to.
  12. Notice that Recyko battery has shorter life span than Eneloop, they start to fail even before 1000 charges, dropped from 2000+ mah -> 1700+ mah, so far Eneloop don't have this issue yet.
  13. Copy and pasted from the other topic: Assuming as it is. That is, CPI remains at exactly like this for the rest of your life. Added: I wonder what most of the 'comfortable' will mean. I don't think having a stable of cars with the likes of Ferarris and Lambos are considered comfortable. Those are closer to opulent, no?
  14. It finally happened today and the place is at Lornie road....... Due to my carelessness, I lost control of my car while driving, mount kerb, side scrape the tree. Side fender damaged. Rims gone, under carriage damaged...... Aww.... sucks..... Worst of the Worst...... Someone actually called the ambulance and police...... WTF.... Ambulance came and ask me if I am OK. I was so embarrassed. Then TP came.... OMG..... Then ask me to report my own insurance etc and left. At least tree is ok, just some minor scratches on the bark, the bark still remain on the trunk, nothing damaged. Don't need to pay for the tree. Wonder if anyone from MCF saw the accident... [:(]

  18. Yesterday my wife asked why I didn't do something useful with my time. She suggested I go down to the senior center and hang out with the guys. I did this and, when I got home last night, I told her that I had joined a parachute club. She said, "Are you nuts? You're 69 years old and you're going to start jumping out of airplanes?" I proudly showed her that I even got a membership card. She read it & said to me, "You idiot, where are your glasses! This is membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club!" Now I'm in trouble again and don't know what to do. I signed up for five jumps a week! Life as a senior citizen is not easy.

  21. My family and I ski at least once a year in Whistle where the crowd is still acceptable for those who ski, this may save your life How to survive an avalanche? Spit, expert says King County Sheriff's Department officers and other emergency officials work along Highway 2 at the Stevens Pass ski area near Skykomish, Wash., near where three skiers were killed in an avalanche Sunday. (Associated Press / The Seattle Times, Erika Schultz) By Rene Lynch February 21, 2012, 5:00 a.m. Spit could mean the difference between life and death if you are ever caught in an avalanche, an expert says. Avalanches are rare -- but deadly. Every second is critical to survival, as is keeping calm in the face of calamity. But that's not easy to do in the face of a terrifying, blinding slide that has the ability to blanket victims in snow and ultimately smother them. After of a weekend avalanche that claimed the lives of three skiers in Washington state, we asked John Snook, avalanche forecaster for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, what you should do if you find yourself facing one. At the first sign of an avalanche, he suggests thrashing around as if your life depends upon it -- because it does. Thrashing, or "swimming," can help you stay atop the slide and the snow, making survival more likely, he said Monday. If you are being enveloped by snow, do your best to keep one arm straight above your head. This serves two purposes. It can help you figure out up from down, which is not always possible if you've been tossed around and become disoriented, Snook told The Times. And, if you're lucky, your gloved hand could be sticking up above the snow to help rescuers find you. With your other hand, Snook said, try your best to create an air pocket in front of your face before the snow becomes too compacted. People buried in avalanches smother, so an air pocket could provide you with enough air to survive until help arrives, he said. An air pocket can also make room for this trick: If you're stuck in the snow and you can't tell up from down, spit. Gravity will tell you which direction to move -- assuming that you can move. The best way to avoid an avalanche is to take precautions from the get-go. "Every mountain in the West has a local avalanche center," he said. Every snow adventurer should be versed in the weather forecast, the snowpack conditions and the avalanche danger rating before venturing out for the day. Consult the forecast, research the area that you're planning to traverse and, most important, don't allow skiers' "powder fever" to overrule your better judgment, he said. When traveling in avalanche-prone areas, don't move together as a pack. Each skier or snowboarder should navigate the stretch ahead alone. That way, if disaster strikes, survivors can alert rescuers to the victim's whereabouts. Everyone trekking into the snowy wilderness -- snowboarders, skiers, snowmobilers -- should be carrying an avalanche survival kit containing a snow shovel, a beacon that is worn on the body, and a probe. High-tech probes work hand-in-hand with the beacon to locate a victim and can even poke air holes in the snow to help victims breathe until they can be rescued. "The whole idea is to just buy yourself some time until help can arrive," he said. A relatively new device, a flotation air bag, can be deployed in the case of an avalanche. It's being credited with saving the life of one of the skiers, Elyse Staugstad, who was also caught in Sunday's deadly slide. Snook said he is a fan of the flotation air bag. But, he said, "We fear it will give people a false sense of security." Snook also suggests that adventurers understand the basics of avalanches, and use such information for their safety. For example, avalanches cannot occur on slopes that are less than 25 to 30 degrees. When plotting out routes, such knowledge can add an extra cushion of safety so that outdoors lovers can focus on safely getting to their destination instead of courting danger along the way. Also, adventurers should know this counterintuitive fact: Less snow often means greater danger. Colorado, for example, has experienced a low-snow year. Those early layers of snow can make for a weak foundation. Ideally, the next layers of snow create heavier "slabs" that make for a solid layer. But if snow is light, the region can be more prone to slabs slipping and sliding and cracking above the poor foundation. "It's like trying to build a house with a deck of cards. Eventually that weak foundation fails," Snook said. "It's been particularly hazardous this year in Colorado. Probably the most dangerous snowpack we've had in 30 years." Typically, the people killed in avalanches are skiers or snowboarders. But snowmobilers are catching up, he said, because the machines are more powerful and durable than ever, enabling riders to go farther into the backwoods and higher on slopes. Snook said Sunday's avalanche especially hit home with him. He lost a friend to an avalanche last Thursday near Gibbs Creek and Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. "I'm trying to honor my friend by hopefully helping others," he said. So far, 17 people have died in avalanches this snow season. Last year, 36 people died in avalanches, according to the Colorado Avalanche information Center.
  22. sometimes emotionally unemotional.....life is a paradox, where one lives towards death. Live your life, be good, show empathy and forgiveness. Just before Lunar New Year, I spent a good deal of more than 2 hours chatting with him in the office, just heart to heart talk, to take his mind off his sick wife. He told me she has got a year more to go, nothing more. And this afternoon I received news that his wife passed away, leaving behind him and their 3 kids. She is probably just in her early forties. He cried nothing but empty tears, life had become a daily dose of anesthetic ever since his wife contracted lung cancer. Just some time back, after having successfully removed the infected lung, there was a hint of optimism. Then came the relapse. Oh, then she would not have much of the chance, I thought, but I kept my mouth shut. I believed he knew it too. My grandmother was just one of the many examples where the cart got out of a rut and soon after clashes down the cliff. This can happen to anyone, its not uncommon, some may even feel mechanical about it...what is the big deal, that is life. But to me, it simply serves as a reminder not to take things for granted. Treasure your fellow MCFers, make friends, not enemies.
