  2. My family and I ski at least once a year in Whistle where the crowd is still acceptable for those who ski, this may save your life How to survive an avalanche? Spit, expert says King County Sheriff's Department officers and other emergency officials work along Highway 2 at the Stevens Pass ski area near Skykomish, Wash., near where three skiers were killed in an avalanche Sunday. (Associated Press / The Seattle Times, Erika Schultz) By Rene Lynch February 21, 2012, 5:00 a.m. Spit could mean the difference between life and death if you are ever caught in an avalanche, an expert says. Avalanches are rare -- but deadly. Every second is critical to survival, as is keeping calm in the face of calamity. But that's not easy to do in the face of a terrifying, blinding slide that has the ability to blanket victims in snow and ultimately smother them. After of a weekend avalanche that claimed the lives of three skiers in Washington state, we asked John Snook, avalanche forecaster for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, what you should do if you find yourself facing one. At the first sign of an avalanche, he suggests thrashing around as if your life depends upon it -- because it does. Thrashing, or "swimming," can help you stay atop the slide and the snow, making survival more likely, he said Monday. If you are being enveloped by snow, do your best to keep one arm straight above your head. This serves two purposes. It can help you figure out up from down, which is not always possible if you've been tossed around and become disoriented, Snook told The Times. And, if you're lucky, your gloved hand could be sticking up above the snow to help rescuers find you. With your other hand, Snook said, try your best to create an air pocket in front of your face before the snow becomes too compacted. People buried in avalanches smother, so an air pocket could provide you with enough air to survive until help arrives, he said. An air pocket can also make room for this trick: If you're stuck in the snow and you can't tell up from down, spit. Gravity will tell you which direction to move -- assuming that you can move. The best way to avoid an avalanche is to take precautions from the get-go. "Every mountain in the West has a local avalanche center," he said. Every snow adventurer should be versed in the weather forecast, the snowpack conditions and the avalanche danger rating before venturing out for the day. Consult the forecast, research the area that you're planning to traverse and, most important, don't allow skiers' "powder fever" to overrule your better judgment, he said. When traveling in avalanche-prone areas, don't move together as a pack. Each skier or snowboarder should navigate the stretch ahead alone. That way, if disaster strikes, survivors can alert rescuers to the victim's whereabouts. Everyone trekking into the snowy wilderness -- snowboarders, skiers, snowmobilers -- should be carrying an avalanche survival kit containing a snow shovel, a beacon that is worn on the body, and a probe. High-tech probes work hand-in-hand with the beacon to locate a victim and can even poke air holes in the snow to help victims breathe until they can be rescued. "The whole idea is to just buy yourself some time until help can arrive," he said. A relatively new device, a flotation air bag, can be deployed in the case of an avalanche. It's being credited with saving the life of one of the skiers, Elyse Staugstad, who was also caught in Sunday's deadly slide. Snook said he is a fan of the flotation air bag. But, he said, "We fear it will give people a false sense of security." Snook also suggests that adventurers understand the basics of avalanches, and use such information for their safety. For example, avalanches cannot occur on slopes that are less than 25 to 30 degrees. When plotting out routes, such knowledge can add an extra cushion of safety so that outdoors lovers can focus on safely getting to their destination instead of courting danger along the way. Also, adventurers should know this counterintuitive fact: Less snow often means greater danger. Colorado, for example, has experienced a low-snow year. Those early layers of snow can make for a weak foundation. Ideally, the next layers of snow create heavier "slabs" that make for a solid layer. But if snow is light, the region can be more prone to slabs slipping and sliding and cracking above the poor foundation. "It's like trying to build a house with a deck of cards. Eventually that weak foundation fails," Snook said. "It's been particularly hazardous this year in Colorado. Probably the most dangerous snowpack we've had in 30 years." Typically, the people killed in avalanches are skiers or snowboarders. But snowmobilers are catching up, he said, because the machines are more powerful and durable than ever, enabling riders to go farther into the backwoods and higher on slopes. Snook said Sunday's avalanche especially hit home with him. He lost a friend to an avalanche last Thursday near Gibbs Creek and Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. "I'm trying to honor my friend by hopefully helping others," he said. So far, 17 people have died in avalanches this snow season. Last year, 36 people died in avalanches, according to the Colorado Avalanche information Center.
  3. sometimes emotionally unemotional.....life is a paradox, where one lives towards death. Live your life, be good, show empathy and forgiveness. Just before Lunar New Year, I spent a good deal of more than 2 hours chatting with him in the office, just heart to heart talk, to take his mind off his sick wife. He told me she has got a year more to go, nothing more. And this afternoon I received news that his wife passed away, leaving behind him and their 3 kids. She is probably just in her early forties. He cried nothing but empty tears, life had become a daily dose of anesthetic ever since his wife contracted lung cancer. Just some time back, after having successfully removed the infected lung, there was a hint of optimism. Then came the relapse. Oh, then she would not have much of the chance, I thought, but I kept my mouth shut. I believed he knew it too. My grandmother was just one of the many examples where the cart got out of a rut and soon after clashes down the cliff. This can happen to anyone, its not uncommon, some may even feel mechanical about it...what is the big deal, that is life. But to me, it simply serves as a reminder not to take things for granted. Treasure your fellow MCFers, make friends, not enemies.
  4. My neighbour put up laundry drying stand poles outside their door and infront of my corner unit blocking 50% of space of my walking space towards the lift area. At the lift area, there are more laudry stands where more laundries are put up. Sometimes they will also put out plastic tubs to dry on stair railing which reduces the 50% of my walk path even more. The most incovenience come from the maid doing the laundry. Somehow it seems like she always do the laundry during times when we are leaving for work and when coming home. At times she would just stand in front of the remaining walk space to do the laundry and we have to come up close to her then she will move. Even so, we have to avoid kicing the pail she put on the floor. I thought the common areas are not supposed to be allowed for such usage as it is hazardous in the event of fire emergencies. Does the town council perform regular checks and advise accordingly or even fine the recalcitrant ones. This neighbour is of a different ethnic group then I am and if I were to complain to them directly, things might get a bit sensitive.
  5. A study from the Finance Ministry shows that children from poor Singaporean families stand a good chance of moving up in life. But this may not apply to younger generations born later than the study's sample group of Singaporeans born between 1969 and 1978, says the study released on Thursday. Its findings show that the son of a father in the bottom 20 per cent of income earners has at least a two-thirds chance of breaking out of this low-income group. And he has a 10 per cent chance of rising all the way up into the top 20 per cent of income earners in Singapore. BACKGROUND STORY As Singapore develops, there is now 'a certain level of saturation' at the top. Well-to-do parents want the best for their children and this hampers mobility as their children have an edge. National University of Singapore sociologist Paulin Straughan, on why mobility is lower now than in the 1970s. source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_755105.html

Hope on day someone can invent a scanner to scanner their brain and see exaxtly what's inside So far, my wife is quite predictable, but the first few years were quite 'trail n error' in terms of avoiding land mines

  8. http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/...ry_742941.html AS ITS designation states, the certificate of entitlement (COE) is an entitlement and assumes that as every person feels he is entitled to it, a price must be levied to show that one truly needs it ('COE domination by high-end marque buyers an unhealthy trend' by Mr Johnnie Chia; Wednesday). In a meritocracy like Singapore, one earns more if one works harder and smarter than the other person. If an average-income earner wants a car badly, he will have to lift himself to a higher income bracket by working harder or smarter. That is the COE's first benefit: as a spur to improving one's lot in order to secure a car. Except for the peak-hour crunch, public transport is first-class. Without the COE, the roads would be clogged, and this is the COE's second benefit: freeing roads for efficient public transport commuting. Mr Chia laments that stiff COE prices favour the wealthy, who can afford to buy more than one car. What is also true is that a rich person can drive only one car at a time, so the second car is kept at home, and is not out on the streets causing pollution. And that is the third benefit: fewer cars, less pollution. Furthermore, the wealthy person pays a hefty premium to own a car he keeps in his garage and we should be thankful for his tax contribution: It helps pay for public conveniences. My point is, one should always consider both sides of an issue. When a person is wealthy and drives a Ferrari and is busy forging deals, he will be only too happy to have an Electronic Road Pricing system in place, so he can zip around and close another productive deal - and pay the salaries of his average-income employees. That's life. --
  15. TWO WOLVES One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. "One is Evil - It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. "The other is Good - It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

  17. Received this news from friend and would like to share with you all ...... In life we keep complaining about what is or why we don't have. Half the time we seem dissatisfied, though full-bodied and free to choose. Fat people say, "I want to be slim." Skinny people say," I want to be fatter." Poor people want to be rich and rich are never satisfied with what they have. Half Man - Half Price Store ~ The Story of Peng Shuilin PENG Shuilin is 78cms high. He was born in Hunan Province , China. In 1995, in Shenzhen, a freight truck sliced his body in half. His lower body and legs were beyond repair. Surgeons sewed up his torso. Peng Shuilin, 37, spent nearly two years in hospital in Shenzhen, southern China, undergoing a series of operations to re-route nearly every major organ or system inside his body. Peng kept exercising his arms, building up strength, washing his face and brushing his teeth. He survived against all odds. Now Peng Shulin has astounded doctors by learning to walk again after a decade. Considering Peng's plight, doctors at the China Rehabilitation Research Centre in Beijing devised an ingenious way to allow him to walk on his own, creating a sophisticated egg cup-like casing to hold his body, with two bionic legs attached. It took careful consideration, skilled measurement and technical expertise. Peng has been walking the corridors of Beijing Rehabilitation Centre with the aid of his specially adapted legs and a re-sized walking frame. RGO is a recipicating gait orthosis, attached to a prosthetic socket bucket. There is a cable attached to both legs so when one goes forward, the other goes backwards. Rock to the side, add a bit of a twist and the leg without the weight on it advances, while the other one stays still, giving a highly inefficient way of ambulation. Peng so satisfying to 'walk' again after ten years with half a body! Hospital vice-president Lin Liu said: "We've just given him a checkup; he is fitter than most men his age." Peng Shuilin has opened his own bargain supermarket, called the Half Man-Half Price Store. The inspirational 37-year-old has become a businessman and is used as a role model for other amputees. At just 2ft 7ins tall, he moves around in a wheelchair giving lectures on recovery from disability. His attitude is amazing, he doesn't complain. "He had good care, but his secret is cheerfulness. Nothing ever gets him down." You have a whole body. You have feet. Now you have met a man who has no feet. His life is a feat of endurance, a triumph of the human spirit in overcoming extreme adversity. Next time you want to complain about something trivial. Remember Peng Shulin instead.
