  8. Fandi Ahmad is looking for HDB flat AsiaOne Sun, Mar 06, 2011 In a 1991 interview, Singapore's favourite football icon, Fandi Ahmad, told The New Paper, 'I have enough money. Lots of money. In two years' time, I would have made enough to last the rest of my lifetime.' He was the country's first millionaire sportsman when he turned 30 in 1993. Now, however, life has dealt him a cruel twist after a decade of setbacks and he is looking for a Housing Board flat in the Yishun vicinity, near his mother's. The 48-year-old used to share a terrace house with his wife, Wendy Jacobs, and his five children. Fandi informed The Sunday Times that his wife is still recovering from a fall in the couple's Jakarta home two years ago. She had suffered temporary memory loss and was bedridden for almost a month. Although she still suffers the occasional mild seizure, she is improving, said Fandi. He told The Straits Times: 'She's getting a lot of rest at home and is much better than before, so we're all happy.' The ex-Lion, however, is on his guard when quizzed about other problems that he has faced recently. 'What's past is past, I can't do anything about it,' he stressed, adding that the constant query on these subjects is 'sickening'. A few failed businesses in the past had left him in so much debt that two parties sued in June 2006 to recover $230,000 in 'friendly loans', which were allegedly taken when Fandi started a used-car dealership in 1999. Fandi then pulled out of the partnership two years later but was still saddled with the debt of his business partners, who had been declared bankrupt. He was their guarantor. Developing young talent His focus has now turned towards helping develop young talent through his academy, which he will launch on Saturday. He is also watching over the growing maturity of his two sons in football - Irfan, 14, and Ikhsan, 12. Despite impressing major European clubs such as AC Milan and Chelsea in trials and making plans for a training stint with Italian Serie B side Vicenza earlier this year, visa issues had forced the family to put that idea on hold. Fandi is also aware that the public will be expecting his sons to fill in the shoes that he has vacated. 'It's not easy for them,' he noted. 'People will expect a lot and scrutinise them. That's why I don't put too much pressure on them. 'I'll just let them enjoy the game while they can and, if they can play good football, that would be good.' He does, however, harbour the hope that at least one of his sons will become a Lion. 'My father (Ahmad Wartam) and uncle (the late Abu Sujak) both played for Singapore. It would be good if they could carry on that tradition,' he said. Good friend and former national teammate Rafi Ali pointed out: 'During his time, everything he touched turned to gold. Everybody made money because of him - people paid to watch him play, for his endorsement, the association also used him for advertisements. 'Still, he's as cheerful as ever. He's not the kind of person who will talk about what is happening in his life. 'It's really very sad that a legend is going through this.'
  9. Yahoo news: Hunt on for ‘Robin Hai’, chief car smuggler and master of disguise KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 — He is the millionaire mastermind of an international car smuggling syndicate whose network spans across neighbouring countries and receives orders from the Middle East and Africa. He is a master of disguise who thrives in the fast lane and has given the authorities the slip over the past six years. His syndicate is believed responsible for the theft of RM400 million worth of vehicles a year. One of the longest manhunts continues with the help of Interpol for Nyo Ah Hai, 49, who has had several identities over the years. He also goes by the name Robin Hai and his last known address is No 78, Jalan Pengkalan Rawa, Nibong Tebal, Penang. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department assistant director of criminal intelligence unit (D4) Abdul Manaf Abd Razak said police only have a picture of him taken in 2007. That picture was released to the media yesterday. “Investigations revealed the suspect adopted different identities to avoid detection. We believe he is in a neighbouring country, living a luxurious life while he instructs his men to carry out the operations. “Even if he had entered the country, we wouldn’t know because of his new identity.” Abdul Manaf said Nyo’s syndicate was involved in almost 80 per cent of stolen four-wheel drives and MPVs, namely Toyota, in the country. “We are trying to locate him and cripple the syndicate responsible for thefts worth about RM400 million a year.” Abdul Manaf said the syndicate’s foreign counterparts would normally relay the type of vehicles they want. Nyo would then instruct his syndicate members to hunt, steal and conceal the wanted vehicles. “Once they have the required number of cars, the vehicles are placed in containers. The syndicate would then forge the documents before exporting the vehicles by sea,” he said. Abdul Manaf said many forwarding agents were also involved with the syndicate. The stolen vehicles were shipped to the Middle East, Africa and East Asia. This year, police recovered 10 vehicles believed stolen by Nyo’s syndicate in Johor and 20 more in Port Klang. Stolen four-wheel drive vehicles are sold at between RM30,000 and RM40,000 while MPVs fetch between RM60,000 and RM70,000. About 35 to 45 cars, 70 motorcycles and 12 vans are reported stolen daily. Link: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/hunt-robin-hai-chief-car-smuggler-master-disguise-230800167.html Wooooooow........... RM400 million a year business ... When come looking for criminal, MY polis states 35 ~ 45 cars, 70 m/cycles & 12 vans are reported stolen daily. But when come to statistics, they are the safest place ....

  11. Once considered pet food, kangaroo meat could soon be sold to China as a luxury product, to encourage Chinese consumers to do something few Australians will - eat it. With a booming middle class, China’s appetite for meat is expected to rise nearly 17 per cent over the next eight years, the World Trade Organization says. Exporters do not yet have permission to sell kangaroo meat to China but recent comments by Australian officials have put the industry in a bullish mood. “This is something that ticks a whole range of boxes,” Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “I’m going to try and look at further discussions with the Chinese because I think there is a big prospect for a market there.” Mr Wang Jun, the owner of a small restaurant in Beijing, said he would be keen to try kangaroo. “Why not? As long as it is delicious,” Mr Wang said. Beef, pork and chicken are staples in China but some diners also tuck into cat, rat, dog and more exotic animals in the belief that they have medicinal qualities. Still, not everyone may be so adventurous when it comes to kangaroo. “How could we lay our chopsticks on such cute animals?” said Ms Liu Xinxin, a 21-year-old university student from Beijing. Ms Liu’s comments echo sentiments in Australia that have kept the kangaroo meat industry in a state of suspended development. A 2008 government survey showed nearly a fifth of Australians would never eat kangaroo on ethical grounds. Others are reluctant to consume an animal that figures in the national coat of arms. Just 15.5 percent of people eat kangaroo meat more than four times a year. Australia is already a large supplier of red meat to China, with shipments worth A$616 million (S$720 million) in the 2012/13 season. The kangaroo industry hopes to jump into the action. “It would be huge if we could get access to the Chinese market and they are certainty very interested,” said Mr Ray Borda, founder and managing director of Macro Meats, Australia’s largest processor of kangaroo and wild game meat. 13. installed lowering spring last year, as expected the shocks gave way in less than a year. Anyway was testing was whether i am happy with the lower ride and sad to say i am hooked and will NEVER go back to stock. At this stage, my wife will kill me if i go back to stock .Already 2 ppl vomited in my car when on stock, my baby & my mother-in-law, not to mention a few near missed at low speeds!!!! due to the very very poor suspension setup...after lowering spring no problems at all. Dont know how they can sell the 08 Altis as a family car....maybe family boat but NOT a family car. IMO its one of the worst car available in stock (thats another story)..unfortunately no $$, so stuck with it. last few week have been hitting the speed humps and the road on carpark ramps. Already White Sands carpark, SingPost carpark and 2 HDB MSCP will hit the bottom even if i crawl over the slope. The lowering spring was good but its time to move on (the rear sag too low...only 1/2 finger). dont wish to go back to stock or stock height so what is the cheapest coilover? friend recommend GAB SS (do in JB). read also BC BR is cheap but cannot find in the marketplace (they only have BC V1). Have been searching internet but not much info cause i guess not many ppl with an Altis will upgrade their suspension (heck we dont even have a legal exhaust despite being one of the most common car on the road!!!).

  22. When the Traffic Police stop a motorist on the road in future, the slip they hand out may be a petrol voucher for good driving, instead of a summons for a violation. An appeal against a penalty for a traffic violation may also only be granted for "extenuating conditions" such as medical emergencies. These are some of the initiatives the Traffic Police are exploring to inculcate safer road habits, as part of Safer Roads Singapore. As part of the movement as well, the first Singapore Road Safety month was launched on Monday morning by Second Minister for Home Affairs S. Iswaran. During the next four weeks, fleet owners in the transport industry, motorcyclists, the elderly, and students will be reminded of safe road habits through several events. These groups are being targeted for this campaign. A collaboration between the Singapore Road Safety Council(SRSC) and the Traffic police, the initiative was launched in line with the United Nations global road safety week this week. Chairman of SRSC Bernard Tay emphasised during a press conference that there will be ongoing efforts beyond the month, and that the initiative is likely to be an annual one.
