  2. Hi All, Looking for solution of a problem, enough of complaining. Yesterday, I went over to the West and took AYE back home. I was on Lane 1, right most lane, overtaking the slower vehicles on the middle lane. From my rear view mirror, i could see a big good vehicle (those with big freezer) veered onto the right most lane going "at least 90km/h" straight on my back. Two thoughts flashed my mind: 1) wtf is a lorry (suppose to be 50 or 60km/h max) doing on the right most lane on an expressway. 2) Is there an urgent delivery of the frozen chicken on the truck? (I like KFC ) I purposely slowed down to the legal speed of this vehicle around 65km/h on the right lane and blocked his overtaking stunt. He tailgated me and went on to middle lane when there is no vehicle. He intended to overtake me on the right most lane but I managed to speed up to block his attempt. Yes, its evil of me, but in my mind, such vehicles going onto the expressway right lane is getting way too common. Both dangerous and illegal. Any constructive suggestions to prevent drivers of such stunts?

    GARANG guni man

Before you think that this photograph is taken at India or Malaysia, it is not. It's taken on my way home from Saturday morning breakfast at PIE, Jalan Eunos exit. The 4 sides of the lorry were surrounded by wooden planks to increase its storage capacity, and the planks were bounded together merely by a green rope as shown in the photo. I could not phantom the consequences if the rope decide to give way one day. The wooden planks would probably crush some windscreens of the unlucky cars which happen to be at the sides of the lorry. However, the result could be much worse if the planks were to fall on a motorcyclist and I believe serious injuries would be assured. Even if the planks do not fall off, there are large openings between two perpendicular planks whereby a piece of cargo could fall off easily. For instance, the orange tin can on the top right corner of lorry could be a potential piece of flying object. For myself, I try to keep a distance from the lorry and overtook it in double quick time to avoid being a casualty. The driver is an elderly man. Come to think of it, it was quite an ingenious idea which reminds me of the case in Frankel Ave whereby the owner of a terrace house decides to create more space by building his house taller than the rest. Coming back to the topic, I am wondering if the traffic police has some regulations laid down with regards to the carriage of goods. Artificial storage space should not be created to accomodate more cargo than what the vehicle is designed for, as this may pose a hazard to other road users. I hold that the elderly man will reconsider such practice going forward and make the public road safer for all of us.

  9. Article: http://www.straitstimes.com/vgn-ext-templa...0000a35010aRCRD PHOTO: JOSEPH NAIR FOR THE STRAITS TIMES A TRAFFIC police officer, who stopped to help the driver of a broken-down van, was knocked down by a lorry along the Bukit Timah Expressway yesterday afternoon. The 23-year-old corporal had pulled up on the road shoulder behind the van, near the Dairy Farm exit, to help the 52-year-old van driver, when they were struck by an out-of-control lorry. Both men were standing behind the van when they were hit by the lorry. The 23-year-old lorry driver had lost control of his vehicle while travelling in the left lane. The lorry skidded before crashing into the men and the two stationary vehicles. The impact sent the van hurtling towards the centre road divider, while the bike was left in a mangled heap on the side of the expressway. Glass, plastic and rubber debris were strewn across the road. Both the officer and the van driver were taken, in a conscious state, to the National University Hospital. The officer suffered multiple abrasions and hand injuries, while the van driver had cuts to his head and leg. The lorry driver suffered minor cuts. He remained behind at the scene of the accident but declined to comment about the incident.
  10. Anyone can recommend cheap lorry rental? Need to do some moving of shelves. Hourly rental will be fine too. Thanks...
  11. Big Lorry (with container) overturned at Woodlands. Saw this when I was at Woodlands in the early evening today (11/09/2008).
  12. Encountered this amusing incident yesterday while on AYE Portsdown exit towards Queensway. Was waiting at traffic light to turn right. Pay attention to the lorry on my left. When lights turned green, the lorry like jump up and down, kind of remind of those American cars. I gave a toot to the driver before moving off on his right. My passenger said I shouldn't have moved in case the lorry toppled on its side!! Anyone knows if this was an intentional stunt by the lorry driver
  13. July 4, 2008 Army regular run over by lorry - it's an accident By Elena Chong AN ARMY physical training instructor died about an hour after he was run over by a lorry when he fell off his scooter and landed on an expressway. Mr Lim Chee Wee, 23, was riding behind his friend, Mr Edward Phua Wen Fu, then 22, on a motorcycle along Pan-Island Expressway last Oct 26 morning when Mr Phua decided to take shelter from the heavy downpour at the Toh Guan flyover. Mr Lim did not realise that his friend had collided into the back of his machine. Due to the impact, Mr Lim fell to the right and landed on the left lane of PIE while his friend fell along the road shoulder. Just then, a lorry driven by Mr Tan Poh Soon, 35, ran over Mr Lim as he could not stop in time. At Friday's coroner's inquiry into Mr Lim's death, Mr Tan, who was named a potential defendant, chose to remain silent. In recording a verdict of misadventure, State Coroner Earnest Lau said on the evidence, he did not think any objective motorist in the potential defendant's position would be able to take evasive action in a split second. He said neither Mr Tan nor Mr Phua was culpable. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_254507.html surprisingly nobody question if the lorry was too close for comfort. and that he cud overrun 1 motorbike yet not the other... afterall, lorry do tat 40% longer distance to stop. so wat is sensible precaution esp when raining. if he has maintained safe distance + 40% wud this hv happened?
  14. SUBANG JAYA, MALAYSIA: The driver of one of the cars involved in the accident near Puchong IOI Mall was killed on the spot while four had been admitted to hospital with serious injuries. Two others -- the lorry driver and a policeman in one of the cars -- were slightly injured. The 14 vehicles damaged in the accident comprised seven cars, two lorries and five motorcycles. The lorry driver is believed to have beaten a red light and failed to realise that there was a traffic island in front, causing him to lose control as he swerved to avoid it. The lorry then smashed into an oncoming Nissan car driven by Myanmar national, Nyu Kyaw Lin, 58. The car was crushed to a pulp as it went under the lorry, killing Nyu instantly. The lorry then crashed into the other vehicles as it spun out of control. A police spokesman said Fire and Rescue personnel took 30 minutes to extricate Nyu's body from the wreckage. The lorry driver was driving from Bandar Kinrara towards Bandar Puchong Jaya. The 1.40pm accident caused traffic around the area to come to a standstill for almost two hours. A police spokesman said the four injured victims were from two of the cars and two motorcyclists. They are warded at the Serdang Hospital and at press time, were reported to be in critical condition.
  15. I have, on a few occassions, witness such drivers smoking while driving their lorry with a LPG cylinders. Wrote to the company a few times, only got 1 response saying they'll investigate. Wrote to SCDF and they also say they'll investigate. Then SCDF asked if I had taken any photos of those drivers smoking. Driving how to take photos? Also, my reaction not that fast. Anyway, if any of you happened to witness such irresponsible and dangerous drivers smoking while driving with LPG cylinders, please, if possible, take a photo and send it to SCDF. I don't want SCDF to wait for tragedies to happen before they start taking action. Thank you.
  16. May 16, 2008 Mom pushes children to safety but hit by lorry By Lee Pei Qi A MOTHER, out on a morning walk with her two children, pushed her teenage daughter and toddler son to safety when she saw an out-of-control lorry veering towards them at Toa Payoh on Friday. But she was hit herself and is fighting for her life now in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The housewife in her 40s, identified only as Madam Shanti, was taking a leisurely stroll with her eldest daughter, Pratheepa, 15, and three-year-old son along Lorong 8 - near their flat in Block 255 - when a container truck and a lorry laden with vegetables collided into each other at about 9.45 am. The impact sent the lorry skidding across the road where the three pedestrains were walking. Instintively, Madam Shanti pushed her daugther and son away from the path of the runaway lorry. But it was too late for her to avoid the lorry, which hit her and sent her flying into the air. She landed on the pavement a few metres away, bleeding profusely. She was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and underwent emergency surgery. Her son suffered a fractured hip when he fell and was taken to Kandang Kerbau Hospital. A distraught Pratheepa told The Straits Times at the TTSH: 'It was a nightmarish sight seeing my mum being flung up into the air.' 'She did not think about her own safety when she pushed us to safety. I am very worried about her.' Pratheepa said she has another sister, Nithia, 13, who was in school when the accident happened. The container truck driver was unhurt but the lorry driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to TTSH. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_238005.html another reckless lorry driver... how many more casualties needed bf TP gg to act?
  17. ANOTHER F1 WANNABE The Straits Times, 20th May 2008 by Carolyn Quek A LORRY ferrying foreign workers flipped onto its side early yesterday morning, sending 20 men tumbling out. No one was badly injured when the open-top vehicle carrying Bangladeshi workers crashed into the centre divider along Farrer Road. The accident - the latest in a string of similar ones involving crews of foreign workers - happened on the Farrer Flyover at about 5.30am as the lorry was travelling towards Queensway. The driver, a Bangladeshi national, was unhurt. All except two of the 21 passengers - 20 at the back and one in the front passenger seat - escaped with scratches. One man fractured his finger while another had a bruised forehead and complained of dizziness. Such accidents have been on the rise. In January, five lorries were in two separate collisions within seconds of each other along Pioneer Road, injuring 53 foreign workers. Many were hit by the planks they had been sitting on. Last year, 184 workers were injured in similar accidents. Two were killed. This was an increase over 2006's casualty toll which stood at 81, with five dead and 76 others injured. There is a 60kmh speed limit on vehicles ferrying workers, as well as limits to how many are allowed to be packed on board. The Land Transport Authority said 226 goods vehicles were caught with too many workers on the decks last year, down from 293 in 2006.
