  8. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_250787.html A jog in the MacRitchie Reservoir turned out to be longer than expected for Dr Brian Takei. He was lost for more than 18 hours and had to spend the night in the forested area, The New Paper reported on Monday. Dr Takei, the Royal Bank of Scotland's Japan representative, had been to the reservoir to jog in April. On Saturday, three days after arriving in Singapore, he decided to go there for a jog taking another route towards the reservoir. That path was isolated and Dr Takei had to make some detours as there were some fallen trees, The New Paper said. Dr Takei tried to turn back but lost his sense of direction after making a wrong detour. In the late afternoon, he then called a colleague in Singapore to get the police's number. He was transferred to the rangers who said they would look for him. However, Dr Takei did not stay put but continued walking through the woods, hoping to return to his point of origin. 'I thought it would be easier for them to find me if I got out of the forested area. I ventured further into the forest and I kept calling the police on my handphone. 'The police told me to try to get near the reservoir as they were ferrying the rangers around by boat,' Dr Takei told The New Paper. By sunset, his handphone battery had gone flat and he suffered cuts and scratches on his arms and legs after walking through thorny vegetation. For safety reasons, he stopped walking when darkness fell. Dr Takei said he was afraid of snakes as he could hear animals moving about. He said he had only an hour of sleep around 6am before it began raining at about 7am. He began walking around when the rain stopped and finally came near the reservoir at 9.30am. He saw the rangers getting off the boat and shouted to them. He was taken to Tan Tock Send Hospital for outpatient treatment. Dr Takei then called his wife who berated him for being too adventurous. 'She said I'm no longer a teenager and I should have been more cautious. She said I was lucky my curiosity didn't kill me.' The experience will not stop Dr Takei, who will return to Japan on Friday, from visiting MacRitchie Reservoir again. He said: 'I think it's a very good nature reserve but I'll not take that same route again.'

  10. TIME to change your bookmark. A slew of new online maps are now providing directions for users in Singapore - without putting them on the wrong side of any copyright law. The new kid on the block is StreetDB.com, a joint venture between two local firms: Agis, a map solutions provider, and property portal SingaporeExpats.com. It was launched last month. Maps on StreetDB.com are free for personal and non-commercial use. Companies, on the other hand, pay a fee - starting from $250 a year - to replicate its maps on their websites. The timing was uncanny - in April, the once-popular Streetdirectory.com was taken down following a High Court order as its maps were found to have infringed Singapore Land Authority's copyrights. Many users were initially left with poor alternatives. But no longer. A worthy rival can be found in StreetDB.com, which maintained that its site is the culmination of a year's planning. Like the previous maps at Streetdirectory.com, StreetDB.com allows users to search a location by postal code or building or street names. Users can check - among other things - where a nearby bus stop is, the bus numbers in service and where the closest ATM machines and cinemas are. Those looking for driving directions will also be pleased. Once users enter the start and end points of their journey on StreetDB.com, they will get detailed instructions - in separate, thumbnail-sized maps - at every turn with distance estimates. Last month, StreetDB.com clocked 96,800 visitors and 465,000 page views. But the drawback of the portal is that users will not be able to see some commercial buildings and private estates. For instance, a search for "The Hillside" at Upper Bukit Timah Road shows only a mark over where the condominium is located. There is no building or shape that denotes the condominium site. A search for "210 Turf Club Road" also shows a scanty map of the area, which now houses rows of used-car showrooms. Agis recognises the limitations of its product, but said this problem will go away in six months. "We are in talks with the Singapore government on a licensing deal to plug information gaps in our maps," said Sunny Lim, director of Agis. The eight-year-old firm currently supplies mapping solutions to mobile handset makers like Samsung, Asus and WMG, as well as global positioning system (GPS) device makers Packard Bell and Alpine Electronics. Its maps are updated as often as once a week by a team of 10 people here, including those who rasterise graphics (convert an image into points on a grid). At the very least, every part of Singapore is surveyed once every six months. Other online directories Rednano.sg Launched in mid-March, this online street directory features maps that allow users to zoom and pan. Its maps are licensed from V3 Teletech, a reseller of Singapore Land Authority's (SLA) data. Search by postal code, building or street names. Drivers looking for directions to get from point A to B can choose whether they want the quickest or the shortest routes. The quickest route is calculated based on the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) traffic information - displayed on a left navigation panel on the map section of the Rednano.sg site. Traffic conditions are updated every 15 minutes. The quickest route is probably the most expensive as it may involve going through several road toll gantries as speed is the main criteria of the search. The shortest route search, by default, avoids road toll gantries as much as possible. This route is calculated based on distance and the number of traffic lights. StreetMap@Singapore This site is operated by the SLA (www.map.gov.sg/streetmap). It is the most updated where buildings and roads are concerned. This is because SLA gets instant feedback from other government agencies like the Buildings and Construction Authority and the Land Transport Authority on new roads and buildings. But the site is not intuitive. A search for "210 Turf Club Road" or "Turf Club Road" shows no results. But a search for "The Hillside" yields a comprehensive map of the area. The site is also a tad slow. [/color]Google Maps Here, (maps.google.com) you will also find driving directions. Its plus points are ease of use and openness. Unlike other online options, Google's application programming interfaces (APIs) are open. Because of that, anyone can add meaning to its maps by creating mash-ups that combine data from multiple sources. The result: a customised map product for users of similar interests. A good example of a Google Maps mash-up is SinGeo (www.singeo.com.sg). Users can view even esoteric data like dengue hot spots, off-road bike trails and free Wi-Fi zones overlaid on the map of Singapore. But most buildings are not reflected. GPS Is Better
  11. http://www.reuters.com/article/BROKER/idUSN0142277220080602 UPDATE 7-Fire destroys buildings at Universal Studios in LA Sun Jun 1, 2008 8:48pm EDT By Sue Zeidler LOS ANGELES, June 1 (Reuters) - A fire roared through part of Universal Studios film and TV studio on Sunday, damaging well-known movie sets and a popular "King Kong" attraction before being brought largely under control after 12 hours, fire officials said. Universal, one of the world's six major film studios, had to close its popular theme park for the day because of the fire but it did not interfere with Sunday's taping of the popular MTV Movie Awards at the adjacent Gibson Amphitheater. About 500 firefighters from several Los Angeles-area fire departments battled the blaze, which caused no fatalities but injured nine firefighters and a deputy sheriff, said Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Ron Haralson. By late afternoon he said the backlot fire was contained to a single structure -- the "King Kong" exhibit -- as firefighters used bulldozers to move burning videotapes and other flaming debris. The blaze destroyed about five structures within a faux New York set used in various movies and television shows, including one sound stage. Also damaged was the "King Kong" attraction, an alley from "The Sting" and a set from "Back to the Future." Sunday's fire burned some of the same back-lot areas destroyed by a blaze in 1990, which whipped through the New York Street and a set used for "Ben Hur." It took years to rebuild at an estimated cost of $50 million. Universal is operated by NBC Universal Inc., which is 80 percent owned by General Electric Co and 20 percent by French communications and utility company Vivendi. The fire caused traffic jams for miles in all directions to the studio, where a building housing a video vault had been badly damaged and the vault itself was "compromised." A Universal spokeswoman said about 40,000 to 50,000 videos had been damaged but the studios either had copies of those films or could easily copy them. The contents of a second vault holding master copies of older and classic movies were salvaged. "Nothing irreplaceable was lost," said Ron Meyer, Universal Studios' president and chief operating officer. The studio said the full damage had not yet been assessed. Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Darryl Jacobs said the blaze was first reported about 4:45 a.m. The cause was not immediately clear. Firefighters encountered explosions from propane tanks and called in helicopters at one point to drop water. Universal Studios is bounded by the city of Los Angeles and communities like Burbank. It is home to the Universal Pictures movie lot and Universal Studios Hollywood theme park. Several acres on the 230-acre (93-hectare) back-lot area, where films and TV shows are produced, were burned but the theme park was largely unaffected. Universal Studios Hollywood houses attractions such as "Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride" and "Shrek 4-D." Its "CityWalk" mall has 65 restaurants, nightclubs and shops. Universal Pictures, with a history dating to 1909, has been a major producer of hit films, and tapped a young Steven Spielberg to make 1975's "Jaws." The director still houses his production company, Amblin Entertainment, on the lot. Other hit Universal titles have included the "Back to the Future" and "Jurassic Park" movies. 15. April 4, 2008 M'sian woman sues husband over losing virginity KUALA LUMPUR - A MALAYSIAN woman is suing her husband for nearly a million dollars over the loss of her virginity, a report said. The New Straits Times said on Friday the 30-year-old teacher is claiming RM3 million (S$1.3 million) in damages for false promises over their marriage, which collapsed after her in-laws disapproved. It said the pair consummated their relationship after dating for a few months, then legally registered their marriage, but they never went through the customary Chinese marriage rites. 'What she has is a marriage on paper only. It's not the kind we all know and the kind all women want. It's a marriage obtained by misrepresentation,' her lawyer, Mr Ernest Chua, told the daily. The in-laws began pressuring their son to divorce, according to the bride, who named in them in the suit for 'inducing their son to breach the contract of marriage' and for causing her 'humiliation and mental torture'. The woman has also asked the court to declare the marriage null and void. -- AFP http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...96.html?vgnmr=1 after the mongolian model, her one must b gold plated...
  16. A stupid idiot truck driver tried to do an illegal u-turn on the (dual-carriageway) Toa Payoh Lorong 8 just outside the Toyogo office building. It was parked on the side looking like he had stopped to deliver something. As I came driving around the bend in the direction of First Toa Payoh Primary School, I was about to pass him when he stupidly swung his lorry across both of our lanes. With no option, I had to aggressively swerve into the oncoming lanes. Lucky for me, there just happened to be ZERO traffic! What a basket! He stared at me whilst I was horning him like a madman. Even the 2 taxi drivers were horning him for blocking the way. What a crazy fella.... I wish I could have taken a snap of him and his registration plate but I was too concerned with trying to get back to the correct side of the road!

  22. Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7095875.stm Video: ------------------------ Video footage has been released in Canada showing the last moments of an immigrant who died after being stunned with a Taser by police. Robert Dziekanski, 40, of Pieszyce, Poland, was restrained by police after becoming agitated at Vancouver International Airport on 14 October. Mr Dziekanski, who spoke no English, was declared dead at the scene by an emergency medical team. The incident is being investigated by police, the airport and the coroner. Police spokesman Cpl Dale Carr said the video was just one piece of evidence, and urged people to wait for the results of the inquest. Mr Dziekanski, a construction worker, was emigrating to Canada to join his mother, who lived in the western province of British Columbia. The incident has prompted a debate about the use of Taser stun guns by police in Canada. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation says up to 18 people have died after being stunned by a Taser in Canada since 2003. Screams The video was shot by Canadian traveller Paul Pritchard and handed over to police, and has only just been returned to him. It starts before the police arrive, with Mr Dziekanski seen through a glass wall in a customs area. He appears agitated, sweating and breathing heavily. Airport security officials and passengers watch from the other side. Having landed 10 hours earlier, he is seen pacing back and forth through an automatic door, standing briefly in the doorway with a small folding table, and then later with a chair. At one point, he takes what looks like a laptop computer off a counter and throws it to the ground, and then throws the small table against the glass wall. Four policemen then walk into view. They walk through the glass doors towards Mr Dziekanski, who turns his back on them. Witnesses say he appeared to pick up a stapler. Seconds later, Mr Dziekanski is stunned by a Taser and falls down screaming and convulsing. He is stunned a second time, and then the police officers restrain him on the floor. Mr Dziekanski's screams die down, and he is seen lying still. A voice is heard saying "code red", which is code for a medical emergency. An autopsy found no sign of drugs or alcohol in Mr Dziekanski's system, and failed to pinpoint the cause of death. Airport mix-up Walter Kosteckyj, the victim's family lawyer, said Mr Dziekanski's mother had seen portions of the video and had approved its release to the public. "She had a son in distress, he was looking for help, he was frightened, and he didn't get that help," Mr Kosteckyj said. He said he was disturbed by the video because Mr Dziekanski was not violent. "I was expecting to see a confrontation, a discussion and things go sideways, then the tasering... That's not what you see," he said. Mr Dziekanski, who had not flown before, had boarded a plane a day earlier in Germany, and arranged to meet his mother at the baggage carousel in the international terminal. Neither of them knew the baggage carousel was inside a secure area, with no view of the public arrivals hall area, except for a short distance through sliding glass doors, Mr Kosteckyj said. No airport, customs or security employees at the airport apparently tried to help either of them, he added. Eventually Mr Dziekanski emerged into the public area, but his mother had left after six hours and Mr Dziekanski apparently panicked, the lawyer said.
  23. EDB's $17.3m recall from UNSW not guaranteed The EDB is currently negotiating with UNSW in Sydney to return the $17.2 million. UNSW Asia was faced with 'significant claims' from creditors. -- ST PHOTO: ALAN LIM THE Economic Development Board's (EDB) attempt to recall $17.3 million from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Asia is not subject to guarantee by its parent institution in Sydney, said a minister. Nevertheless the EDB is currently negotiating with UNSW in Sydney to return the money. Mr S Iswaran, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, said this in Parliament when Nominated MP Siew Kum Hong queried if the parent university can be held responsible if UNSW Asia is delcared insolvent. In a statement last month, UNSW had said that UNSW Asia, the company behind the now-defunct Singapore campus, was faced with 'significant claims' from creditors. It said if the claims were upheld, UNSW Asia will not have enough funds to pay up, and may have to consider declaring itself insolvent.
  24. Just finished field work with my colleague at choa chu kang, head back office in the east So he took KJE towards TPE, crazy Farker hit 170km/hr in his lowered, slightly modded White vios, similar to the picture attached! Lost my balls once I step into his car! Still trying to find it! Think vios no matter how lowered or soup up, it's not meant to do 170, honestly, it felt like 270km/hr, as if taking off into the air! Told him to slow down and fark him up, all due respect to all 22 year old drivers out there, but 22 year old is young, dumb and full of cum. I mean I was like that too, at that age I was creating so much havoc with my ZXR. Old fark like me cannot take it, please....to all vios drivers, dont try, it's not worth it.
