  2. this study seems to be false in SG? --- Consumers Beware: In Reality, Luxury Cars Don't Make Us Feel Better 7/28/2011 -- Professor Norbert Schwarz says most of the time, we're focused on the mundaneness of daily life and our car makes little difference. ANN ARBOR, Mich.
  3. This prison should be called a resort or holiday camp instead. Each 'cell' has it's own bathroom, study table and flat screen TV. Instead of giving inmates 1hr of time in yard daily, they have lotsa activities to keep them busy for the whole day long. http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29....html?hpt=hp_t1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halden_Prison

  6. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1112147/1/.html SINGAPORE: Singapore car registrations dipped almost 40 per cent in 2010, as sky-rocketing Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums put off prospective buyers. COE premiums saw a record jump last year, with a 163 per cent increase for vehicles with engine capacity of more than 1600cc. Premiums rose 96 per cent for vehicles below 1600cc and more than 200 per cent for the open category in the same period. However, registrations for luxury cars moved in the opposite direction last year and January data shows more high-earners here are keeping up with a speeding economy. Luxury car dealerships are seeing more buyers, bucking sluggish demand in the broader auto market. BMW registrations in Singapore grew 21.4 per cent last year; Mercedes Benz saw a 17.7 per cent jump. Registrations for luxury sport autos have seen an even bigger increase. Car registrations for Porsche rose 48 per cent last year, while those for Ferrari went up a whopping 116 per cent. This compares with a 39 per cent drop in registrations in the overall auto market in Singapore. Karsono Kwee, Executive Chairman of Stuttgart Auto (Porsche), said: "I've been in the Porsche business for the last 25 years. Last year was a record year for us." According to luxury sports auto dealerships, the bulk of demand came from high-earners, such as lawyers and bankers. And these individuals may have spent their year-end bonuses chasing speed. Last month saw 97 registrations for Porsche, almost six times the December figure of 17. James Bond's favourite Aston Martin saw five registrations in January, compared with just two in December. Analysts said that with the economy growing strongly, pay packages for top executives will rise further, giving them more spending power. Pan Zai Xian, Director of Financial Services and Legal at Robert Walters, said: "A lot of compensation has been raised in the last year. I think last year has been a great year when people spend...like upgrading their vehicles before the COE prices come up. I think that's quite typical, in luxury brands we see that as well." And with pay packages expected to rise again this year, especially for those in the higher-income bracket, demand for luxury cars like these may just continue to go up. - CNA

  9. Hi guys, Please vote for your fav. Luxury car brand in 2010.
  10. Are You Aggressive Towards Luxury Cars on the Road? I mean things like they wanted to cut in but you purposely don't give way. That squeeze in front of them and force them to brake etc. I.e. make life difficult for them on the road. Are you that sort of driver? I recently have a close shave with a Porsche. He was trying hard to cut ahead of me (because his lane can only turn right). He tried to out acclerate me and cut in but I just match up with him. In the end, almost bang (I think we are like 5cm away form each other while moving on the road). I was prepared to bang and fight to the death already. In the end.....I lost....... because got car in front of me so I have to stop. Then his lane was empty and he went forward and some idiot gave way to him..... :( Sigh........Nevermind, will hope to fight with another Porsche again another day. Who knows, this time I will really bang him and can come out and fight.

  19. Channelnewsasia Hyundai's first luxury sedan wins 'best car of the year' Posted: 12 January 2009 0137 hrs Photos 1 of 1 Dr Hyun-Soon Lee, Hyundai's president of research and product development, poses next to the Hyundai Genesis. DETROIT, Michigan: South Korea's Hyundai won its first "best car of the year" award at the Detroit Auto Show on Sunday for its entry into the luxury market, proving that recession does not mean foregoing frills. The Hyundai Genesis sedan won 189 out of 500 votes from US and Canadian automotive journalists, beating out Ford's Flex and Volkswagen's Jetta TDI for the win. "It is the perfect luxury car for bad economic times," priced below 40,000 dollars, John Krafcik, president of Hyundai Motor America told reporters. Car buyers now "do not want to pay a premium for luxury," he commented. The vehicle marks a "new beginning" for the company, its first global luxury sedan, equipped with its first V8 engine, "a game changing vehicle which will define our products going forward," said Hyun Soon Lee, vice chairman of Hyundai in accepting the award. Launched in mid-2008 in North America, Hyundai has sold a mere 6,167 Genesis sedans in Canada and the United States, competing mostly with BMW's 5 Series. A whopping 75 percent of Genesis buyers were new to Hyundai, Lee said. He hopes the award nod drives up sales of its entire line. "Hyundai Genesis shows that the Korean automakers have come of age," said award jurist Matt DeLorenzo of Road and Track. A "dream car for the recession," commented Jayne O'Donnell of USA Today. "It has everything you'd want in a luxury car except the fancy hood ornament." Ford meanwhile secured another win in the "best truck of the year" category with 259 votes for its F150, beating out runners-up the Dodge Ram and Mercedes-Benz ML320 BlueTec. The F150 has dominated the category for 32 years. Despite slipping truck sales, which peaked in 2005, Mark Fields, president of Ford's Americas division, told AFP that truck buyers "need the vehicles for work" and so he sees sales leveling off soon. - AFP/de

  21. Jan 13, 2009 Luxury cars defy gloom DETROIT - IF YOU have US$1 million (S$1.45 million) to spend on a car, you may be one of the 'happy few' to be offered a chance to buy one of only 75 new Mercedes SLR 'Stirling Moss.' Unrestrained luxury cars are selling well, despite doldrums in the global auto industry. The new SLR, which goes on sale starting in June 2009, will be reserved for owners of previous SLR models - which sold for as much as US$300,000 - and them alone, said a Mercedes spokesman at the Detroit auto show. The nouveaux riches, recent lottery winners and the like, can thus only dream of getting in the driver's seat. In a market in dramatic decline in the United States and throughout the world, high-end brands such as Bentley, Maserati, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Maybach and Rolls Royce are posting strong sales, up eight percent to 50 per cent notably in emerging markets such as Eastern Europe. Jaguar, now owned by India's Tata, sold 65,000 cars priced between US$30,000 and US$60,000 in 2008, up eight per cent over the previous year, according to its global marketing director CJ O'Donnell. 'Of course everybody feels the crisis, but Jaguar does not have to sell millions of cars to make a profit,' he explained. Britain remains Jaguar's primary market, but the United States is catching up. On Sunday, Jaguar executive director Michael Drisco unveiled the company's new XF, which can reach speeds of up to 362kmh, 'which really pleases women.' He says he is 'pretty optimistic for the future.' It's a niche market and for the most exclusive brands, only a few hundred vehicles are produced. 'We sold 2,430 Lamborghini in 2008, up six per cent, and we have 122 dealers, 50 more than in 2007,' chief executive Stefan Winkelmann said at the launch of its Gallardo LP 560 at the Detroit auto show. 'Lamborghini is style, Lamborghini is lifestyle,' he said, adding that the carmaker more and more customises its vehicles in response to clients' unique demands. 'We individualise the cars.' These coveted Italian luxury sports cars sell for US$200,000, sales director Enrico Maffeo told AFP. The US market was its top buyer with 950 vehicles sold in 2007, but sales fell slightly to 750 Lamborghinis last year, while European sales topped 1,000, he said. Who rides in Lamborghinis in the United States? Hollywood actors, a few rappers, and top lawyers, mostly in New York, California and Florida. 'Elsewhere, we sell mostly in Italy, Germany, Britain and Switzerland. In Russia, the roads and the climate are harsh, but we still sold a dozen vehicles there,' Mr Maffeo said. 'We cannot say we are unaffected by global prices,' commented Lamborghini's Mr Winkelmann. 'But we are not changing strategy. We have a new product each year.' Even if the car maker maintains its distinctive Italian style, in its designs as in its marketing, Lamborghini is nevertheless since 1998 part of Germany's Audi, which is in turn owned by the Volkswagen Group. 'The synergies between them are indispensable,' said Enrico Maffeo. 'That's something the US automakers never quite got a handle on.' -- AFP http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_325490.html
