  3. Some info: My father divorced from my mom more than 20 years ago and did not contribute to the family thereafter. I was about 18 and my siblings all less than 20 years old. He has 4 more children from his first marriage. My mom was the second wife. He is in hospital now, bed ridden. The children from the first marriage suddenly call us and say we must meet with them to see a social worker. Bear in mind we dun have any dealings with them the past 20 years. I have visited my father once in hospital cos he called me and sounded like he was "dying". My initial thought is that they may serve the maintenance order on us and my mom is very upset. Do you guys think I have any liability from this Act if I cite abandonment? Thanks.
  4. Dear all, I'm a sucker for classic cars. Saw this beauty online. But was wondering what's the maintenance like. Does anyone has experience with maintain such a car? Am thinking of buying this as a second car. http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.ph...525&DL=1059 I know there will be replies on parts availability / road tax / insurance / petrol consumption etc. Appreciate that. But I wish to find out more from classic car lovers who had actually own and maintain one before

  9. I am just wondering why premium cars like BMW/Merc etc have such high maintenance cost compared to mainstream brands. Then more exotic ones like Audi S5 or Porsche etc even higher. I am just thinking if these cars are built to be durable and reliable, why is the maintenance so expensive? Even premium engine oils don't cost that much and you don't change oil even 2-3K for such cars right? Of course, one reason is due to premium charges. Eg. agents like PML may charge you $600 or more for a new batt for your BMW but if you know where to get the batt, even a Varta Silver Dynamic batt cost much less than that. Another reason is that such cars may not be actually that reliable...... I have my experience with old BMW e36 and e39 cars. I feel they are not exactly durable compared to Jap cars (of that time). Many parts like radiator, water pump, bushings etc do not have long lifetime. After a certain mileage must change already. I also read that the old Porsche 944 is not exactly reliable and has very high maintenance cost, causing many people to give up their 944s after sometime. thus, if these cars cost alot more than mainstream cars, shouldn't they be more reliable and durable and hence cost less to maintain in the long run?
  10. My battery coming 3yrs and I think it's about time for battery to RIP. Can I buy a maintenance free battery to keep at home so that I won't be caught by surprise? maintenance free don't need pre-charge right?

    Heart or Head?

Broadly speaking, there are cars that appeal to our hearts and cars that appeal to our heads. Cars that appeal to hearts tug at our heartstrings and incite a lust/infatuation that borders on the irrational. The classic example of such cars have to be Alfa Romeos. For generations, Alfa has churned out cars that sent grown men (and women) falling head over heels. Despite the occasional tantrum, owners (or ex owners) still think the world of their Alfas. On the other hand, we have cars that we know check all the right boxes when it comes to practicality. They almost never break down. They are fuss free to maintain, reasonably priced (well relative to Singapore standards), have a big boot, sip fuel ... Well, you get the idea. These are cars designed to tug at our brains or heads. They are the logical choice. For a long while, Toyotas dominated this class though we see the Korean car manufacturers chipping away at its dominance today. And this brings me to the conundrum plaguing me today - what is a young (relatively, speaking) driving enthusiast on a young man's budget who just sold off his ride and is in the market for his next ride to do? Heart or head? Or is there a way to get a little bit of both? Part of me really wishes to splash out the cash on the car I fell in love with (yes, it is an Alfa). But my saner side questions if I can put up with any niggles. Reliability may have been improved in recent years, but it is likely to be a slight distance away from the Japanese marques I have been used to. And let's not even talk about the horror stories that friends have been passing along about their parents' Alfas. They are like a bucket of ice cold water extinguishing my passion for all things associated with the Serpent crest. Not to mention, it does require a rather hefty financial outlay for someone at my stage in life. And then there is the contender to the Alfa. Another equally attractive car (to me) that speaks to the Beng in me. Prices are a lot less steep but I am sure the worries are no fewer. I speak of the almost legendary EG and EK Honda Civics. The same old cautions are administered in large doses. Reliability, worries over accident history, the inevitable problems with driving cars that are more than 10 years old. The list is long. Once again, my saner side is screaming and telling me NO. On the other side, these two cars face a myriad of competitors. I have test driven bread and butter cars from all major Japanese and Korean marques. Yes, they are within budget and yes, reliability is not such an issue. But if I bought any one of them, I would always have the niggling thought that I was settling. They would never be my first choice. And as each COE bidding passes, I am still unable to make up my mind and I remain currently car-less and hopeful for that one car that could be the perfect compromise of both heart and head. Any suggestions?
  17. As gorgeous and capable as the new Jaguar XK, XF and XJ might be, some people in the market for a luxury sedan or GT still have a dated notion of Jaguars as service nightmares. Talk to folks from the Big Three and they'll tell you in no uncertain terms that fighting persistent jokes and decades-old impressions is, well, difficult. Those old impressions can linger in the mind of buyers well beyond their validity, crimping sales and blocking exposure to some very tasty products. One way to counteract that image problem is to design a better product, build it carefully and correctly, start gaining a reputation for reliability and wait for the hordes to push down your dealership doors. Another way to do it is to offer free maintenance to jump-start the process. Jaguar North America is using the latter approach, launching a free scheduled maintenance program for all of its 2011 models. According to Automotive News, the new five-year/50,000 mile plan will be called Jaguar Platinum Coverage, and will provide free scheduled maintenance, along with 24/7 roadside assistance. Jaguar has tried a similar approach in the past, but this new plan even goes so far as to comp oil changes, filters, brake pads, brake discs, brake fluids, and wiper blade inserts. The old program was last applied to 2006 models while Ford was still calling the shots. Jag's new owners, Tata Motors, are anxious to kick off the new XJ launch with a bang, hoping to show shoppers that this isn't your wealthy uncle's Jaguar. The program will be in effect when the XJ sedan goes on sale in May and will also apply to the 2011 XF sedan and XK coupe when they reach dealerships in June.
  18. Hi, I can't seem to find any threads pertaining to the above topic. I understand that CSII supposed to protect our original paint as well as to give our car a pro-longed shine. But I also wish to apply products as toppers to "bead" rain droplets and reduce watermarks. So far, i have used Duragloss Quick Detailer to remove dirt Duragloss Aquawax to give it a wax shine (not sure if bonds properly because my car is white) I'm also looking for some products to prevent dust from "settling" easily on my car and to make my cleaning less tiring. Any advices from Bros & Sistas here? Thanks! btw: What do u recommend for normal glass cleaner? (except Rain Repellers which may affect my wipers)
  19. Hi, am helping a poor friend to enquire about topic title. She's married to a male chauvanistic habby who's very possessive and controls her every move. She's not allow to leave home alone, not even to buy even a packet of chicken rice at the hawker centre, no joke. She's working and her salary is being controlled by her habby in their joint savings account, she only has a daily allowance of $10, no joke. My fren is a Singapore PR and working as a factory operator, if she is to divorce her habby, can she ask for maintenence and alimony from her habby, e.g. half his assets and monthly maintenance. Her habby threatened her that being a PR, if she divorce, she'll get nothing, how true is that. Another hold her habby have on my fren is that he realised that my fren is beginning to see another guy who really cares for her. Will that have any bearing as well ? If marriage is still far far away, may not even happen. Thanks all to advise and help my poor fren.
