  1. Saw quite a few saying they make money...but until now I still don't believe...went to a AD early this week...I thought if really can fetch more money...I don't mind selling current two cars off and just live with one new car...since selling away both cars and getting back one new may be able to help offset the rocketing COE...so I ask the SE...He say used car price same same...not much change from last time...because they cater for different needs...if someone need to pay so much for a used car with low COE...they might as well buy a new car...well...what he say is what I thought too...and no reason that he will lie to me...because then he lost a customer...in fact he should tell me old car fetch good price and encourage me to change... is the myth busted...or the salesman is new on the job !!! [confused]
  2. I am talking about those track and field, gymnasts and swimmers and so on .... How do they make a living doing their sports? Do they get paid for winning events? Those successful ones become celebrities and can do product endorsements, but what about those average ones who rarely win?

  7. PM Lee urges new citizens to make more effort to integrate Published on Jul 7, 2012 Shared values and goals, loyalty to country, and emotional attachment to places, are what give meaning to being a citizen, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. -- ST PHOTO: LIM SIN THAI By Robin Chan Shared values and goals, loyalty to country, and emotional attachment to places, are what give meaning to being a citizen, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. These aspects are much more important than just a change of legal status, he said, as he urged the new Singapore citizens to make greater effort to integrate into society. 'Much more important are the intangible factors, the heart part, that make citizenship meaningful,' Mr Lee said at a citizenship ceremony at Teck Ghee Community Centre on Saturday. He particularly urged new citizens who had recently moved to Singapore to put in more effort and adapt to Singapore. 'Do not just mix amongst yourselves, or with recent immigrants. Make friends with Singaporeans - your neighbours, colleagues, and with your children's schoolmates, and pick up Singaporean customs, lifestyles, norms and social rules,' he said to the 200 new citizens. Mr Lee noted that there are real differences in customs, habits and attitudes even among people who are ethnically similar, and that behaviour that is normal back in the home country, 'may not be considered socially acceptable in Singapore'. 'Know about them and try to bridge them,' he said. He encouraged them to adapt to Singapore norms, as part of their Singapore identity, and the best way to do so is by joining in community life such as by volunteering in school, or in self-help groups. He said: 'Becoming a citizen is a big step, but it is one step along the journey. I hope that now you have become a citizen, you will integrate more into society.'

  10. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/sugar-dumb-us-sci...-190918147.html Eating too much sugar can eat away at your brainpower, according to US scientists who published a study Tuesday showing how a steady diet of high-fructose corn syrup sapped lab rats' memories. Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) fed two groups of rats a solution containing high-fructose corn syrup -- a common ingredient in processed foods -- as drinking water for six weeks. One group of rats was supplemented with brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids in the form of flaxseed oil and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while the other group was not. Before the sugar drinks began, the rats were enrolled in a five-day training session in a complicated maze. After six weeks on the sweet solution, the rats were then placed back in the maze to see how they fared. "The DHA-deprived animals were slower, and their brains showed a decline in synaptic activity," said Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats' ability to think clearly and recall the route they'd learned six weeks earlier." A closer look at the rat brains revealed that those who were not fed DHA supplements had also developed signs of resistance to insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar and regulates brain function. "Because insulin can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, the hormone may signal neurons to trigger reactions that disrupt learning and cause memory loss," Gomez-Pinilla said. In other words, eating too much fructose could interfere with insulin's ability to regulate how cells use and store sugar, which is necessary for processing thoughts and emotions. "Insulin is important in the body for controlling blood sugar, but it may play a different role in the brain, where insulin appears to disturb memory and learning," Gomez-Pinilla said. "Our study shows that a high-fructose diet harms the brain as well as the body. This is something new." High-fructose corn syrup is commonly found in soda, condiments, applesauce, baby food and other processed snacks. The average American consumes more than 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of high-fructose corn syrup per year, according to the US Department of Agriculture. While the study did not say what the equivalent might be for a human to consume as much high-fructose corn syrup as the rats did, researchers said it provides some evidence that metabolic syndrome can affect the mind as well as the body. "Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think," said Gomez-Pinilla. "Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain's ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage." The study appeared in the Journal of Physiology.
  11. Hi, I'm interested in installing a spoiler that was meant for a different car make. I've actually 'test-fitted' with the actual spoiler so can confirm that it does not sit squarely (ie, it's not resting 'flat' on the boot) and have gaps of about 3mm at certain points of each foot of the spoiler. The workshop that is selling that spoiler says will need to fill the gaps with silicon. Anyone with experience in installing such 'incopmatible' spoilers? Can share your thoughts and experience?

  14. Government releases 5 future population scenarios Published on Apr 24, 2012 The National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) on Tuesday released five future population scenarios that highlight Singapore's pressing challenges. -- ST PHOTO: SHAHRIYA YAHAYA By Phua Mei Pin The National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) on Tuesday released five future population scenarios that highlight Singapore's pressing challenges. The release of this paper is part of a public engagement campaign by the government on population issues, in the lead-up to a White Paper on population that will come out later this year. The paper can be seen at www.nptd.gov.sg/. One scenario projects that the total fertility rate stays at its current low of 1.2 births per woman, with no supplement to the population from immigration. In this scenario, Singapore's citizen population will start to shrink 13 years from now, and decrease by more than half a million by 2060. The other scenarios keep fertility at current levels, but with differing levels of immigration, ranging from 15,000 to 25,000 new citizens being brought in per year. In all scenarios, the number of working-age citizens declines, while the median age climbs. The scenarios show that an immigration inflow of between 20,000 and 25,000 new citizens a year is needed to keep the citizen population size stable
  15. I like the body configuration of the RX8:- 4-seater, with better than 2-door access for the rear passengers by use of rear-half-doors. But my concern of high maintenance etc of the rotary engine (which doesnt really improve performance by a lot vs mazda 2.3 turbo engine) keep me away from this model. If Mazda produced the RX8 with a more convention power plant like the 2.3L T as an alternative, they may sell more RX8s? Similarly, proven engines like the old evo engine or the STi engine can also be used in other models for more ommphs.... The Jazz/Fit lineup also lacks a performance version wherelse Polo, etc have it. A great body needs a great engine to produce a winner while the B&B verison can continue to sell to the general car buyers. What other mix-and-match models you can think of?
  16. I do not think the authorities will assist much in this sort of civil disputes or come out with such an insurance scheme. If pressed I guess they will say go for BMW to save ourselves these hassles... From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_782815.html Make Malaysian vehicles liable for accidents here Published on Mar 29, 2012 I WAS involved in an accident with a Malaysian vehicle on Jan 3. The Traffic Police have not charged either party. If the accident had involved two Singapore-registered vehicles, the apportioning of liability would have been 50:50. However, as this involved a Malaysian vehicle, I was advised by my insurer to make an own damage claim as it would be difficult to claim damages from the foreign vehicle or its insurer. This is grossly unfair. Singapore drivers pay road tax to drive on Singapore roads. We should be assured that in the event of an accident, our interests are protected. I have two suggestions:
  17. main culprits are men who drips when they pee........ how to stop this? this is not joking..... lets start with the urinals chosen for the toilets. some urinals really cmi..... too small and any drips sure land on the floor, and become smelly there are basically a few types of urinals, which you used and found more drip-proof than the others? 1. old school common urinals in stainless steel, one long longkang everyone can see next guys' didi... but the 'drain' catches the drips quite well (but i think no more liao, even SAF camps also not using this) 2. individua "box type" hanged from the wall, open front, with a little 'lip' sticking out in front trying to catch the drips... quite useless 3. the moden individaul oval (egg-shape) type, also hanged from wall, i find this type catches the drips quite well (my vote goes to this) 4. the full height individual urinal which sits on the floor, we pee all the way down into its 'catchment' on the ground.... quite rare nowadays 5. other types? maybe they should introduce a drip-sensor ---- anyone drips, he gets water jet shoot at his face from the wall.... this way he will aim and shoot properly maybe the urinal should be shaped like a xmm's open mouth, then the guy insert his didi and shoot, sure no drips on the floor, not smelly toilet... ??

  19. Very often we dismiss the good things in life for what could be better. Sure, there's always room for improvement. I hope this thread makes us think of the good things in life. For me, it is things simple things like : 1) Having a weekend with no plans or doing nothing 2) Waking up as and when I like, sleeping in on weekends 3) A nice brunch with scrambled eggs included followed by a good cup of hot tea with milk. 4) A good workout 5) Playing with my dog 6) Catching up with friends not thinking about work 7) Having my EPL team getting 3 points. What about yours?
  20. I think this is an example of poor planning and waste of resources and tax money. SINGAPORE: Airlines operating from Singapore's Budget Terminal will soon operate from the main terminals at Changi Airport. That's because the Budget Terminal will be closed later this year to make way for a new and improved terminal. Travelling the no-frills way has become more popular. Last year, one in four passengers at Changi Airport travelled on a low-cost carrier (LCC), compared to about one in five in 2010. In fact, low-cost carriers accounted for 28.6 percent of all flights at Changi Airport. And the outlook is bright. Mr Shukor Yusof, Aviation Analyst at Standard & Poor's, said: "Our understanding is that there are moves to review the operations at the Budget Terminal because of the increasing traffic, because of the expectation that there will be more and more budget airlines that will ply into Singapore. "I think there is no chronic shortage of facilities or any acute problems that we are having at the LCCT (low-cost carrier terminal). The numbers are increasing so fast that I think in the next few years, issues concerning the comfort of passengers, the issue of more aircraft, if you look at the budget airlines in the region, everyone is buying new aircraft, every single one of them are expanding. So within the next three to four to five years, you will have more aircraft, more passengers. "Indeed, more passengers are flying to Singapore by budget airline, so what we have today in Changi in terms of the Budget Terminal, is good for now. But within the next few years, it would struggle to cope with the numbers." Opened in 2006, the Budget Terminal can handle up to seven million passengers annually. And sources say the authorities are now looking at building a new terminal to cater to future demand. Many workers at the Budget Terminal are aware of the impending closure. Shop owners have also been informed and some say it's no surprise, as the lease for most concessions there will expire in a few months. The Budget Terminal currently serves Berjaya Air, Firefly, SEair, Cebu Pacific and Tiger Airways. MediaCorp understands the decision to move the carriers to the main terminals was reached a few weeks ago. It is understood that Tiger Airways will operate from Terminal 2, possibly by June. Provisions have been made for them to operate from Row 12 near to Singapore Airlines, Silk Air and the new Scoot airline. Berjaya Air and SEAir will also operate from Terminal 2, with Berjaya making the shift as early as April. When contacted, Firefly says it is aware of the move, but declined to give details. Analysts say the expected change should benefit carriers and passengers. Mr Shukor said: "I think it is going to be quite good for these carriers because that would mean seamless connectivity for passengers who want to hop onto another carrier at Terminal 2. "In terms of people who are flying from Australia onwards to Europe, for example, instead of being transported from the LCCT to Terminal 2, they can just walk a short distance and go onto the next flight and that's clearly an advantage for Tiger." Observers say when the budget carriers begin operations from the main terminals, they could be faced with higher costs. But it is understood that authorities are working on a special arrangement with the airlines to help them address the issue. Changes have also been made to aero-bridges at Terminal 2 to accommodate the additional flights. Observers say it should not take more than two years for the new terminal to be ready. - CNA/de
  21. My car came to a halt at a pedestrian crossing. A man was crossing, he was halfway to the other side of the road. A bike came from nowhere, the rider didn't slow down or stop, but zoomed past the man, a few cm away. If the man had walked a second faster, he would have been knocked down. I couldn't see the no. plate, the motorcycle was too fast, and my in-car camera couldn't capture clearly. can't seem to embed the video...

  23. What a difference eight months makes Print Email Thursday, 19 January 2012 Singapore Democrats In May 2011 candidate Lee Hsien Loong stood before the crowd and apologised to Singapore for the Government's poor performamce. He acknowledged the poor handling of the Mas Selamat escape, the floods, housing and public transport. He was contrite and pledged to do better. What a difference eight months and one swearing-in ceremony makes. In Parliament this week a feisty Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong defended the high ministerial salaries, saying:
  24. I was driving into Malaysia and at the Malaysia side of the customs, there was a a traffic jam and cars were inching/merging slowly in multiple columns into the customs lane. All the vehicles were crawling forward and I wanted to change lane and signalled my intention. After a while, when there was a sizeable gap, I shifted my car nose in (about 20% in at an oblique angle). A maroon Toyota Wish driver in the adjacent lane, unhappy that I made it into his lane, came near and pointed his bumper into my driver side door. I stopped moving but he did not. He deliberately turned his steering to the right and continued moving forward, scrubbing his left corner edge of his bumper across my driver side door, leaving paint marks and abrasive scratches, after which he stopped his vehicle right next to mind and gesticulate with the palm-up wave that communicated "you think you can just barge in, dream on!". I'm not going to argue who's right and who's wrong, but I would like to make a claim against his insurance. I only have pictures of his vehicle's rear, and a very blur picture of his face (through the windscreen), and a picture of the damage to my car. What can I do to make the claim?
