Rina Sophian Abdul Samad, 29, was also fined RM5,000 ($2,200) by the Magistrate's Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to taking part in motorcycle racing on July 4. He was charged with five other Singaporeans and a Malaysian who works in the Republic. The other six men pleaded not guilty when they appeared before Magistrate Zahilah Mohammad Yusoff. All of them are accused of racing illegally on the highway on their high-powered bikes at 1.30am before being caught by police who were conducting an operation against illegal racers in the area. The five Singaporeans are part-time driver Mohamad Shahril Mokhtar, 34; pizza deliveryman Muhammad Fuad Mohd Ali, 23; despatch rider Muhammad Nazri Soehaimi, 23; engineering student Muhammed Lukman Omar, 24; and national serviceman Anuar Hidayat Abdul Aziz, 22. The Malaysian is Balamuralli Boobalan, 32, a technician from Teluk Intan in Perak. Rina's occupation was not stated. They were charged under a section of the Road Transport Act which can lead to a fine of up to RM15,000 or a jail term of five years, if convicted. They could also have their driving licences suspended for two years. Magistrate Zahilah set Sept 21 for the trial.

  12. May 7, 12:06 AM EDT Malaysia to crack down on scam in which usable halves of junked cars are welded together By JULIA ZAPPEI Associated Press Writer KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysia will require all vehicles to undergo inspection before being resold, in a bid to end a flourishing scam where the usable halves of two junked cars are welded together and painted over. Transport Minister Chan Kong Choy said the government was concerned about the high number of vehicles that consist of welded "half-cuts," coming from bad accidents or from abroad, The Star newspaper reported Monday. A ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make public statements, confirmed the report, saying the requirement would take effect "very soon." Chan reportedly said the Cabinet had approved a bylaw to require inspection before ownership can be transferred to protect used-car buyers from purchasing such "kereta potong" or "half cars," which are structurally weak and unsafe to drive. "We are moving one step further to make it mandatory to undergo a road worthiness test," Chan was quoted as saying. The inspection will be done by Puspakom, a private company that specializes in keeping records of used cars. Most banks require a history record from Puspakom before sanctioning auto loans. The practice of joining two halves started a few years ago when insurance companies ordered totaled cars fixed to save money, The Star said. From January to March, Puspakom reportedly detected an average of 20 cases each day. Last year some 4,600 cases were recorded. The Federation of Motor and Credit Companies Association of Malaysia has welcomed the ministry's move but expressed concerns about Puspakom being the only one officially able to inspect the cars, the daily said. The federation reportedly said Puspakom would have a monopoly, leading to long queues there and possible corruption when people seek alternative, faster ways to get inspection certificates. Chan said the ministry was continuing to study the possibility of barring old vehicles from Malaysia's roads to avoid cut-and-join vehicles and boost car sales, the newspaper reported.

  15. Just some advices for those driving to Malaysia. If there are three lanes on the road, with the rightmost lane stating go straight or turn right, never use that lane to go straight. I got into one minor accident when I did that. And everybody says that lane's for turning right despite the markings on the lane. So, pls do learn from my lesson. See three lanes, turn left keep left, turn right keep right, go straight stay in the middle.

  22. I would like to find out if anybody had ever drove to Endau-Rompin National Park at Johor. I have received letter promotion a series of driving trip and one of them is driving to that location.Quite tempted to go. Check from the organiser that 60 km of the trip is need to drive on cross country road before reaching the destination. One of the photo even show cars travelling on a stretch of very bumpy and uneven dirt track. Is the road condition very uneven? Any negative effect on your car performance after the trip? After travelling on the dirt track, does you car's bumper, side skirts suffered tiny paint chip-off due to small rocks? Thanks!
