  7. If you are a die-hard, old-school driving enthusiast who still prefers operating three pedals with your own two feet, we've got some news for you. As has been reported off and on for the past few years, Ferrari
  8. Recently Euro $$ drastically dropping, think it's good time to upgrade my Civic to BMW, but checked through all BMW catalogs, disappointed me that there is not any model c/w manual version in Singapore[smallcry] ,since I got license have driven manual cars 8 years, not feeling to auto cars, Do I enjoy luxurious have to sacrifice driving fun? ,
  9. Erm... when it comes to shifting gears, that is. I recall when I test drove a VW equipped with a fancy DSG gearbox for the very first time. At that time, it seemed to me to be the way forward. A gearbox offering all the perks of a manual transmission without the need to physically depress a clutch pedal? I was very much sold by what I had been reading about it. The test drive, on the other hand, quickly revealed what the specifications sheet could not. True, it offered all the on paper benefits of a manual, but somehow, it had also eradicated the fun and feel of driving a manual car. After that experience, I was certain. Even in a horrendous jam, I'd much rather be driving a manual over a DSG. To me, the driving experience was really that much poorer. Yet, I am certain that I am clearly in the minority here. In Singapore, it appears that the manual transmission is headed the way of the dodo bird. Increasingly, car distributors locally are no longer offering a manual option or relegating it to a special indent basis. Hordes of Singaporeans crowded the VW showroom for the Polo launched with a 7 speed DSG transmission. Accordingly, most cars that we see on the road are now either a conventional auto or of the DSG type. All this, of course, is very bad news for me. And it leaves me somewhat baffled. If probed on their preference, most Singaporeans attribute their choice of a non-manual transmission to practicality. It is more convenient; less tiring in traffic jams; it is easier to drive; it is less straining on the knees; better resale value and so on. But in the UK, and most of continental Europe, I am told that most cars are manual. That is despite the fact that London has comparably heavy congestion and the steep 1 in 3 slopes that dominate much of UK's urban landscape. Even grannies in UK are game to drive a manual car. Doesn't it mean that most of our so-called 'practicality' reasons are really small and niggling inconveniences that we can live with and are not really as severe as we think? Why then, do most Singaporeans still prefer non-manual cars? I can only think of one reason for this. Just like our dominant national philosophy to life, most Singaporeans only want to get to the destination; the journey and the experience in between is insignificant.
  10. My 04 manual cerato gives me a FC of 13km/l for the last tankful. Usually it is around 12-12.5km/l Travelling pattern mostly away from expressways, taking those stop start route to get around ERP in the mornings and evenings. I guess the school holidays elleviate the traffic condition by a little bit and thus smoother traffic equates to better FC figures. How's your cerato?
  11. When you are approaching a red light, do you guys step down on the clutch and let the car freewheel, using only the brakes?? Or do you use a combination of both engine brake and brakes?? Because i heard that many drivers use the freewheeling method because it saves petrols. But i also heard that it will cause your brake pad to wear off faster, so many don't advise on it..
  12. Tue, Oct 27, 2009 AsiaOne Top 8 reasons why real men drive manual More and more Singaporeans are now favouring cars with automatic or semi-automatic transmissions. Even car dealers find it impractical to bring in manual transmission cars (where can we get a six-speed manual Golf GTI without indenting one?). It's a vicious cycle. But real men still drive manual cars, according to an AskMen.com article. We list here their some of their top reasons: 8) A manual transmission is the ultimate in control The manual transmission is for the alpha male, the one holding the TV remote. Men would rather be the boss than the subordinate. A car with a manual transmission lets the driver be the boss of the car, says AskMen.com. Throttle response will always be immediate unlike some modern automatic boxes. We tend to agree. 7) You can use motoring jargon and not sound like a total fool Having the ability to drive stick can make you sound like an authority on all things motoring when chatting to the fairer sex, even if you don't know what you're blabbering about. Unless your date is a motoring journalist. 6) You can't spell "manual" without "man" Our favourite reason among AskMen.com's top ten list. Manual transmission is man because you can't say one without saying the other. Try saying "manual" without first saying "man". Automatic boxes aren't considered cool and they have nicknames to go along with it. "Slushbox", for instance. "Flappy paddle gearboxes" just doesn't cut it as well. To AskMen.com, "nothing flappy will ever be manly." 5) Manual transmissions prove you can multi-task Society looks up to people who can multi-task complex motor movements. Just look at the guy who got famous by shaking his hands and legs in different directions. He got hired by Visa for their ads. Shifting a manual car is also quite complex. You have to release the accelerator with the right foot, depress the clutch with the left, use your right hand to select a different gear and then simultaneously release the clutch as you accelerate, hoping to engage clutch and throttle at that optimum rpm. 4) You can't drift in an auto Hmm. AskMen.com says drifting is the most extreme form of car control. Driving it sideways requires a massive set of, erm, courage, and a car with a manual transmission. A manual transmission is beneficial for drifting because you can keep the engine in the sweet spot of its powerband. Try it in an auto and watch the fun die as the transmission shifts up early and kills the power. Ivan Lim, Singapore's top drift driver manoevuring his car in a drift movement. And him showng TNP reporter Joyce Lim the basics of drifting in his Toyota Chaser. 3) No more fancy moves in an automatic There'll be no more heel-toe technique in an automatic, considered to be the elite driving manoeuvre in the motor racing world, says AskMen.com. The heel-toe manoeuvre allows one to downshift, rev-match and brake all at once. The driver will operate the clutch normally with the left foot. The ball of the right foot will be on the brake, slowing the car down, while at the same time the right heel of the foot will "blip" the throttle during gear change. This will match engine speed to the wheel speed. Benefits? It keeps the engine in the desired powerband and reduces drivetrain jolt, greatly reducing wear and tear on the transmission. 2) Manual transmission cars are more fun Having control over your is advantageous. An engine performs best at a certain rpm range, the "sweet spot" so to speak. At the "sweet spot" the power curve generally gets more aggressive. With a manual car, says AskMen.com, you can find out exactly where this sweet spot is and keep the car there. But with an automatic, the car will most probably shift up before you hit the spot. 1) You'll never look bad if you can drive manual A friend lent you his car to drive because he's too drunk to get behind the wheel. And being the nice guy that you are, you'll send the ladies home too. Imagine the embarrassment you feel when you reach the car, only to find that it is a manual. Which you can't drive because you're lazy enough to take your driving test in an automatic car. Real men have never experienced such embarrassment. 15. Was taking an enforced break from work when I stumbled across an ad in today's classifieds listing, among other yummy things (like the 120i and Passat Turbo ), the availability of the Golf GTi in manual (Yay.... ) at some PI. Price was listed in the mid-90's range, which puts it smack in line with the Focus ST (woo-hoo.... ) Just curious to know - true or false and should one even consider - why or why not? And, oh, before some cynically suspicious person fires off the usual "...so, do you work for the PI..." sort of question, the more senior members of this forum, I'm pretty sure, can attest to the fact that I don't. I'm posting this to get some opinions on whether someone should consider such a proposition, not as some thinly-veiled form of advertisement for the PI....
