But if the recently introduced RX-8 production sports car truly is unique thanks, in large part, to its rotary engine, the RX-8 Hydrogen Rotary Engine (RE) concept, showcased this year at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Featuring a fuel system that consists of a high-pressure hydrogen tank, the vehicle balances the needs of the driving enthusiast and the environmentalist with a blend of alternative power and the exhilarating driving experience for which Mazda is known. As the auto industry turns its attention to hydrogen fuel as a gasoline alternative, the RX-8 Hydrogen RE offers a hydrogen-powered version of Renesis - Mazda's next generation rotary engine that was introduced last year in the all-new RX-8. By virtue of its smooth performance, compact size and impressive driving characteristics, Renesis was named International Engine of the Year in June 2003. The Renesis Hydrogen RE allows the RX-8 concept to run on either hydrogen fuel or gasoline and capitalizes on all the advantages of the rotary to assure RX-8's ease-of-operation and reliability. The Renesis Hydrogen RE incorporates an electronically controlled hydrogen injector system, with the hydrogen injected in a gaseous state. The system draws air from the side port during the intake cycle and uses dual hydrogen injectors in each of the engine's twin rotor housings to directly inject hydrogen into the intake chambers. Because it offers separate chambers for intake and combustion, the rotary engine is ideal for burning hydrogen without the backfiring that can occur in a traditional piston engine. The separate induction chamber also provides a safer temperature for fitting the dual hydrogen injectors with their rubber seals, which are susceptible to the high temperatures encountered in a conventional reciprocating piston engine. Also helping to maximize the benefits of the rotary engine in hydrogen combustion mode, the Renesis Hydrogen RE features adequate space for the installation of two injectors per intake chamber. Because hydrogen has an extremely low density, a much greater injection volume is required compared with gasoline, thus demanding the use of more than one injector. Typically, this can be difficult to achieve with a conventional reciprocating piston engine because of the structural constraints that prevent mounting injectors in the combustion chamber. However, with its twin hydrogen injectors, the RENESIS Hydrogen RE is both practical and able to deliver sufficient power. In addition to the revolutionary hydrogen-powered Renesis rotary engine, the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE concept benefits from improved aerodynamics and optimized tires and weight-saving measures. A fast-fill tandem master cylinder reduces brake drag and friction hub carriers help cut power losses. The vehicle also incorporates a host of other technologies for exceptional environmental compatibility. Three-layer, wet-on water-based paint on the RX-8 Hydrogen RE dramatically reduces the emission of organic solvents, saves energy by shortening the drying process and reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, the plant-based plastics used for the vehicle's interior parts provide an attractive alternative to plastics derived from fossil fuels such as petroleum. 15. Some interesting facts I found off the Mazda Forum posted by someone. I just cut and paste only. History And Overview: Mazda introduced the 323 GLC in 1977. The GLC was the predecessor to the Protege and was nicknamed the "Great Little Car" in some 120 countries around the world including the U.S. It won critical praise from the press and public alike. Ten years ago Mazda dropped the GLC name in the U.S. in favor of Protege, giving it a more upmarket tone. The Mazda Protege debuted in the 1990 model year as the upscale 4-door version of the company's base model, the 323. When the Protege was redesigned for 1995 it became Mazda's entry-level passenger car, after the 323 hatchback was discontinued. All models below are Protege models. http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/used/reviews/photos/index.cfm/id/2068/img/92807071990308 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...92807071990308 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...92807071990308 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...92807071990308 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...92807071990308 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...92807071990308 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...92807071990308 For : Acceleration (LX), Fuel economy, Handling, Ride, Passenger room Against : Road noise, Engine noise, Acceleration (w/automatic transmission) http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/used/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/2200 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...ex.cfm/id/2200 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...ex.cfm/id/2200 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...ex.cfm/id/2200 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...ex.cfm/id/2200 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...ex.cfm/id/2200 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...ex.cfm/id/2200 For : Optional antilock brakes (LX, ES), Passenger room, Fuel economy, Ride Against : Handling, Acceleration (w/automatic transmission), Radio controls (1995-96), Entry/exit http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/used/reviews/photos/index.cfm/id/2385/img/00807071990001 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...00807071990001 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...00807071990001 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...00807071990001 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...00807071990001 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...00807071990001 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...00807071990001 For : Fuel economy, Ride Against : Acceleration (w/automatic transmission) http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/new/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/23279 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...x.cfm/id/23279 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...x.cfm/id/23279 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...x.cfm/id/23279 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...x.cfm/id/23279 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...x.cfm/id/23279 ://http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/...x.cfm/id/23279 For : Fuel economy Against : Noise, Acceleration (w/automatic transmission) It might be interesting to note that the Protege name is a recent addition only to the Singapore models in accordance to marketing strategies. Although all the while it has been marketed effectively as the 323, in its true sense .... all 323 chassis models in Singapore since 1990 actually has a right to the Protege name, and not only the most recent facelifted models only. However, do also note that the rightful owner of the Protege name is actually the 2 litre version which we in Singapore do not have access to. What might also be interesting to note is that all reviews since 1990 has NOISE as a problem but they didnt do anything about it. Automatic Proteges are also no acceleration demons either. They are basically built as standard family cars only.

The Ibuki concept (the name comes from a Japanese word that refers to breathing new energy into and adding vigor) reaches back to its 1989 origins in is simple and clean design and hints towards one possible approach for a future Roadster/MX-5 model. Powered by a MZR 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine, the Ibuki concept successfully realizes a super front-midship layout (as also found in the Mazda RX-8) that places all major components within the wheelbase. Compared with the layout in the current Mazda Roadster/MX-5, the engine is positioned approximately 400mm further to the rear, while the air conditioner unit is located behind the seats. Thanks to the super front-midship layout, yaw inertia moment has been greatly reduced, enhancing further the level of pure, fun drivability-oneness between car and driver-that has been central to the Roadster's ongoing success. Roomier in the back than a Focus, the Mazda manages to combine athletic and muscular good looks with a high level of practical virtuosity.

    NEW Mazda 3

Mazda has already put the new Mazda 3 hatchback into production in Japan. In its domestic market, it will be called "Axela" instead. The name is the combination of English words "accelerate" and "excellent" (again, some silly Japanese concoction). In Europe, the Mazda 3 will be officially launched in September

  21. http://www.supercars.net/PicFetch?pic=2003_mazda_kusabi-1.jpg http://www.supercars.net/PicFetch?pic=2003_mazda_kusabi-2.jpg http://www.supercars.net/PicFetch?pic=2003_mazda_kusabi-3.jpg Sharing centre stage with the new Mazda3 at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show is a new Mazda concept car: an exciting four-seat sports sub-compact, the Mazda Kusabi. A unique combination of attributes, it delivers all the strengths of a small modern sports car--with a stylish and aggressive exterior, a spirited 1.6-liter common-rail diesel engine with six-speed transmission and superb dynamic characteristics--but adds a revolutionary Twin-Lift Hatchback door system, four seats and high levels of interior functionality and style to make everyday city driving more fun and exciting. Everyday sports concept The new Mazda Kusabi Design Concept car represents a further evolution of Mazda's DNA, this time in an exciting diesel sports sub-compact derived from the Mazda2 platform. The modern sub-compact segment offers customers affordable cars with low emissions and fuel consumption--for less environmental impact in today's congested urban areas. Due to their small size, they are agile and easy to use, especially for normal day-to-day activities such as commuting and shopping. In Japanese, the name Kusabi means 'a bond or connection which ties two things together.' This is an appropriate name for Mazda's new sports sub-compact concept, as it brings together a set of attributes to give customers something completely different than conventional vehicles in this segment. It is based on the unique concept of the everyday sports sub-compact offering customers typical sub-compact strengths--like being small and very manoeuvrable, economical and ecologically sound--with outstanding design and exciting performance, and is yet another fresh example of Mazda's Zoom-Zoom spirit. Stylish and aggressive design The Mazda Kusabi Concept features a short overall length (3800 mm), a wide body (1750 mm) and substantial wheelbase (2490 mm). The extremely short front/rear overhangs and 17-inch wheels further emphasize its low and wide stance and give the car a strong road presence. The basic proportions of its exterior design result in a short, emphatically contoured form that immediately communicates an aggressive, sports-car look and give it a unique exterior design. The front end features a wider, more intricate update of Mazda's signature five-point grille. The headlamps with high-luminance LED's are located within slit openings and lend a sharply sculptured expression to the front end. Press lines extending from the bonnet through the body sides to the rear end have prominent edges which, combined with large 17-inch wheels and pronounced fenders, visually express a feeling of driving excitement. The name Kusabi also means wedge in Japanese and perfectly reflects the wedge-like design of the upper sections of the car. The roof has pronounced edges and slopes down to the rear end in such a way that, when combined with the side and rear windows, forms an X shaped C-pillar in the shape of two wedges. This creates a simple yet unique design that achieves an aggressive sports car personality that truly stands out from the crowd. Contemporary interior design The Mazda Kusabi Concept's interior features a unique design that integrates the instrument panel with a highly rigid annular aluminium frame around the foot wells. The rear strut tower stiffeners in the luggage area also have a sturdy aluminium design. Together these features give visual expression to Mazda Kusabi Concept's robust structure, creating a powerful, sporty ambience inside the cabin. The interior is unified by a simple, geometric design that combines cool metallic elements with soft-textured materials, for a refined, contemporary ambience. With its 2+2 cabin layout, Mazda's new Kusabi sports car concept offers high levels of practicality for normal, everyday tasks. The car features a Twin-Lift Hatchback with a revolutionary new tailgate mechanism that allows easy access and use of the luggage compartment. The Twin-Lift Hatchback arrangement provides two completely different opening modes. There are two split hatch doors that open individually on a hinge mounted longitudinally in the centre of the roof. This opening mode is especially practical for stowing smaller items. However, they also open together like a regular hatchback, facilitating stowage and removal of larger items. The rear seat area of the new Mazda Kusabi offers unparalleled flexibility for a sub-compact diesel sports car. You can either use the rear seats for occupants, or fold them down to create a very usable luggage area. For even more luggage space, you can easily remove the aluminium rear strut tower stiffeners located behind the rear seats. Mazda Kusabi Concept's front seats feature swing seatbacks for easier access to the rear seats of the 2 + 2 cabin. A hinge mechanism fitted between the driver's seat and passenger's seat permits turning of the seatbacks toward the inside in a way similar to a house door, making it easier to get into the back seats. Also, the centrally located hinge mechanism is aluminium with a geometric design. Together with the seats' metallic-look outer frame and the aluminium frame of the instrument panel, it contributes to the powerful, contemporary ambience of the cabin as a whole. As an added feature enhancing everyday use, the aluminium frames running across the bottom of the bulk head trim and door trim have built-in lighting that is linked to door opening and closing. The frame provides a soft glow in the foot wells and functions as a courtesy light for the door trim, facilitating easier entry and exit at night. Chassis / Engine Mazda Kusabi Design Concept's aggressive design, revolutionary Twin-Lift Hatchback, four seats and excellent interior flexibility are combined with Zoom-Zoom dynamic performance to deliver a unique new generation sports car experience. It's compact body and short overhangs minimise the car's yaw inertia moment and contribute to superior handling characteristics. In addition, the highly rigid body features an aluminium frame and the same excellent suspension system as the Mazda2 to achieve levels of driving excitement expected of a Mazda sports car. It combines 17-inch wheels and large (283 mm) front and rear disc brakes for linear and responsive braking action. Combined with a new and spirited diesel engine delivering substantial torque, Mazda Kusabi Concept's stabile and predictable driving dynamics make everyday driving fun and exciting. Mazda Kusabi Concept is equipped with a new 1.6-liter MZ-CD diesel engine with diesel particulate filter (DPF). It is mated to a six-speed Automatic Shift Manual transmission, optimised to allow the driver to get the most out of the engine's torque and power, adding to the sporty enjoyment of driving the car on a daily basis. It combines the excitement of manual shift driving with the comfortable feel of an automatic, and helps make the driver feel one with the car. The 1.6-liter MZ-CD powertrain not only achieves sporty performance but a high level of environmental compatibility as well. It features a highly-rigid block and ultra-high pressure common-rail fuel injection, and is equipped with a DPF system for excellent emissions performance, especially important in urban centres with lots of traffic. It produces 80 kW/110 PS of power--with low levels of noise, harshness and vibration--and 240 Nm of torque on demand. The result is a powertrain that delivers sharp acceleration and ensures that the Mazda Kusabi Concept is agile, responsive and fun to drive in city traffic. Story by Mazda

  23. Hello everyone, I have a buddy looking for a GT-wing for his 323. Anyone knows or have installed such GT-wings, where can he get a Madzaspeed GT-wing or any equavalent(perheps made of plastic) in Singapore? Your response will be high appreciated. Thanks and have a nice day. Cheers.
  24. I remember once driven a Mazda 929 in 1988 when i was quite young, it belongs to a [gorgeous]'s dad [sweatdrop] since then never pay attention to this model and forgotten about it. Was thinking back and this came to my mind, but it was the car that i missed most What happen to the 929, when did it stop??
  25. Mazda RX-8 v VW Golf R32 ew new cars have laid it on the line as frankly as the Mazda RX-8. It's tempting to think of it as a cautious diffuser of ideas, meticulously smudging the lines between saloon and coupe, purist sports car and executive smoothie. Its pitch smacks of contrived ambiguity. But it might just be one of the great doubt-free zones of recent times. If you buy an RX-8 you're not buying some bogus genre-bender, the reasoning goes, but an alternative mindset. Leave the ludicrous attribute-fusing to the 'motro' and oh-so 'spafe' Nissan Micra, the RX-8 really is radical: aesthetically, conceptually and propulsively. And that's a stroke of genius straight off. The RX-8 isn't just the world's only rotary-engined car, it has no direct rivals at all. Does this make it an outcast? In a sense it does. But it also means it will be gatecrashing some of the best parties in town. Few BMW 325i drivers can have given a thought to what it would take to get them inside a Mazda showroom. They will now. Audi TT owners, too. And aspiring Nissan 350Z pilots. Even the hardcore hot hatch brigade. The RX-8 isn't mucho-macho, but how can you ignore 228bhp at 8200rpm, a 9400rpm red-line, a shape that makes even the Alfa 147 GTA's look straight-laced, and backward opening rear doors with more kerbside theatre than a row of Merc SLs in hood stow mode? You can't. And, at
