  1. October 24 1990 Honda Accordreaches million mile mark BY KELLEY BOUCHARD SACO -- Joe LoCicero's 1990 Honda Accord slipped into a parking spot in front of City Hall with its engine purring, much as it did two decades ago after it rolled off the assembly line in Marysville, Ohio. LoCicero, a resident of the town of Norway, was honored with a surprise parade and given a 2012 Accord on Sunday afternoon after racking up more than 1 million miles on his trusted older model, nicknamed "True Blue" for its light-blue exterior. LoCicero, 53, is the first person documented by the car manufacturer to have driven a Honda to the million-mile mark, according to a company spokeswoman. "If you listen carefully, she's getting old," LoCicero said, "but it's been an amazing ride." Known as "Million Mile Joe" through a recent advertising and Web campaign, LoCicero is a master auto technician who travels throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont inspecting vehicles for warranty claims and lease terms. Honda and Darling Auto Group sponsored the parade down Main Street, which featured marching bands from Westbrook High School and Saco Middle School and varsity cheerleaders from Biddeford High School. "Joe is a testament to what you can do if you maintain your car," said Ron Russell, Darling's director of operations in Bangor. "Thankfully, not many people do it, or we'd be out of business." Russell learned of LoCicero's impending milestone in August 2010, when the car had clocked 938,000 miles. He informed Honda's advertising agency, which set up a website, millionmilejoe.com, where he has chronicled his story. The agency chose downtown Saco to hold and record Sunday's celebration because of its classic New England appearance. Local teens made the floats and costumes featured in the parade, including an oversized odometer and pine tree air freshener. A plane flew above, trailing a banner that said, "Way To Go Joe!" Miss Maine USA Julia Furtado helped to deliver the cobalt blue 2012 Accord. "I like it," LoCicero said, grinning as he sat in the new car. LoCicero bought the older Honda in 1996, when it had 74,000 miles on it. He kept it running with diligent maintenance, keeping track of every fill-up, tire rotation and oil change in a couple dozen notebooks. "Every car needs maintenance," LoCicero said, recommending that drivers follow maintenance schedules, use quality parts and drive safely. He does much of the work himself, having been an auto mechanic for 18 years before becoming a vehicle inspector. "He'll be out there, underneath the car, on a blanket in the middle of winter," said Sharon LoCicero, his wife of 32 years. They have two children and two grandchildren. Through the years, the car's seat belts, steering wheel and upholstery have worn out and been replaced. The fuel pump blew at 741,000 miles, drawing laughter from his children when it had to be towed. "They thought it was the funniest thing that it finally broke down," Joe LoCicero said. He swears that the engine and transmission are original. "I took the engine apart once to clean it for a carbon issue and put it back together," he said. LoCicero's Accord has traveled about 48,000 miles per year. The average car travels 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year, said Russell, of Darling Auto Group. At that rate, it would take at least 66 years to reach LoCicero's 1 million mark, which equals about 40 times around the Earth. LoCicero said he's not sure what he'll do with the 1990 Accord now that he has a new model, also made in Ohio. He's tried to sell the older model to a few car dealers recently for $1 million, hoping they'd want to display it to advertise the longevity of Honda vehicles. "A buck a mile. That's fair," LoCicero said. "I didn't get any bites." The electronic odometer in the old Accord turned over 1 million miles on Thursday. Now, it says LoCicero has driven it 75 miles. "I'm starting all over," he said.

  3. High Court to decide which driver at fault American woman whose leg was severed seeking damages that are likely to hit $1m By K.C. Vijayan, Law Correspondent THE High Court will this week decide which of two drivers - or possibly both - is to blame for a freak accident that caused an American housewife to lose a leg. The two-day hearing starts tomorrow before Justice Lai Siu Chiu. It will pit car driver Rosli Salim against private school bus driver Toh Yoke Chin in the spat over liability for the 2007 accident. Both parties have already accepted in principle, at earlier hearings, that the victim - Mrs Erin Mullin, then 35 - was totally innocent. This means that either or both parties are 100 per cent liable and will have to pay damages expected to hit $1 million. After the allocation of liability is settled by the court, the case will be referred to an assistant registrar to assess the total amount of damages to be paid, in the proportions decided by the High Court judge. Mrs Mullin was in the carpark of the McDonald's restaurant in Queensway at about 7.45am on Sept 18, 2007 when the car driven by Mr Rosli knocked into her. Moments earlier, Mr Rosli, who was driving along Queensway in the direction of the Ayer Rajah Expressway, had turned left into the carpark. But to do so he had switched from an inner lane, overtaking the bus driven by Mr Toh in the process. The bus hit the rear of the car and the impact caused the vehicle to accelerate, ramming two parked cars before knocking down Mrs Mullin. Her right leg was severed and she suffered other serious injuries, according to court documents filed by her lawyer Ramasamy Chettiar. She was initially treated at the National University Hospital, where the leg was amputated, and then in Chicago, where she now lives. Her husband, Mr Jason Mullin, then 36, suffered post-traumatic stress disorder on seeing her in hospital after the accident. He was awarded $10,000 for his suffering by senior assistant registrar Cornie Ng earlier this month. The expatriate couple had arrived in Singapore a few months before the accident for him to take up a job here as a trader with a foreign bank. Police investigated the accident and in January 2009 Mr Rosli pleaded guilty in court to two charges of rash driving and causing grievous hurt. He was jailed for five months and disqualified from driving for four years. But in the current civil suit filed by the Mullins, Mr Rosli - in defence documents filed by his lawyer Niru Pillai - argues that the accident was caused or contributed to by the alleged negligence of Mr Toh, whose bus hit the rear of his car. Among other things, he argues that the bus hit the middle-rear section of his car, which showed that he was already in the left-most lane, ahead of it, at the time. He claimed Mr Toh did not regulate the speed of the bus properly to take into account the car that was in front. But Mr Toh denies any liability, arguing there was a break in the chain of causation between the first collision involving the two vehicles and the second collision between Mr Rosli's car and Mrs Mullin. In defence documents filed by his lawyers Desmond Tan and Chia Aileen, Mr Toh added that Mr Rosli was negligent in the control and management of his car, and this led to the accident. If he succeeds before the court, then 100 per cent blame will fall on Mr Rosli. Mrs Mullin is seeking damages which are expected to exceed $1 million, factoring in present and future medical expenses, loss of earning capacity and pain and suffering.

  6. Too trusting, too complacent or just too dumb? I'm talking abour Mr Wu. One thing is for sure...Mr Wu is very rich. ----- 'I want my $2.2 million back', says boss AsiaOne Thu, Jun 09, 2011 By Karen W Lim SINGAPORE - She loved luxury goods so much that she stole from her former boss to purchase them, and although she has been sentenced to a 59-month jail term and declared a bankrupt, he still wants his $2.2 million back. Former personal assistance Samantha Chiam was sued by her boss, Mr David Wu, in the High Court in August last year. She had stolen $1.3 million from him between 2006 and 2009 by forging his signature on his personal cheques and used it to splurge on branded goods. Click on thumbnail to view (Photos: ST, TNP, Reuters) Chiam, who told her psychiatrist: "Without my branded goods, I am nothing", forged Mr Wu's signature on a cheque for US$500,000 (S$615,000), then shopped at luxury boutiques, spending at least $10,000 at Loui Vuitton and $30,000 at Chanel each time. Chiam, 30, who is a mother of three young children, managed to amass an extravagant collection of branded goods, including 200 pairs of shoes, 80 bags, jewellery and luxury watches, reported The New Paper. RELATED STORIES Brand-obsessed woman's Great S'pore Swindle The Straits Times reported that Mr Wu, 38, obtained a court order to declare Chiam a bankrupt as she could not return the money. Chiam has since been convicted on nine counts of forgery, with 24 similar charges and one charge of converting benefits of criminal conduct was taken into consideration. But Mr Wu, a Taiwanese who has lived in Singapore for 16 years and runs Triple Electronic, a Singapore-based firm which distributes electronic parts and has branches in Taiwan, the United States, Malaysia and China, told The Straits Times that he was not satisifed. "In one year, she earns no more than $30,000. I got back close to $600,000 which she would have to work at least 2 years to earn. She worked for me less than five years and took so much money. Who knows where she has kept the rest? When she gets out of jail, she can still enjoy it." "I was understanding and lenient and yet she has shown no remorse or regret," he said. Mr Wu trusted her to take care of his personal matters as he travelled often and made it clear the money she stole was from his personal account, not company funds. "It's not a money issue. I'm very offended because she is not sorry. "If she took the money for her family or kids, I can let it go. But it was to buy bags," said Mr Wu. He also said that Chiam did not even say sorry. "I will pursue this my whole life." [email protected]

  10. We won't blame you for reading this headline and thinking, "Oh great, another Toyota recall." After all, the Japanese automaker dominated headlines in 2010 by recalling every single model in its then-current product portfolio, including the massive sticky pedal and unintended acceleration recalls that took place in the first half of last year. Now, Toyota has issued a voluntary recall on about 245,000 Lexus sedans here in the United States and an additional 1.5 million vehicles around the world. Here in the U.S., the 2006-2007 Lexus GS 300 and GS 350, 2006-2009 Lexus IS 250 and 2006-2008 Lexus IS 350 sedans are being recalled due to faulty installation of fuel pressure sensors. If this sensor has not been fastened tightly enough, fuel has the potential to leak between the gasket that connects it to the fuel delivery pipes. Including these North American vehicles, the fuel sensor recall affects 354,524 vehicles around the world, with Automotive News citing that the Toyota Crown and Mark X sedans are being recalled in the automaker's home market. Toyota's other global recall involves faulty fuel pipes and fuel check valves, though none of the 1.34 million vehicles affected by this one are in North America. In Japan, the RAV4 crossover, Voxy and Noah minivans are being recalled, as well as the Avensis sedan and wagon sold in Europe. Sources: Toyota, Automotive News

  16. The mantle of "world's most famous car" is a heavy one indeed. But if any single automobile ever created deserved the honorific, surely it's the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 used on-screen in the production of the iconic 007 films Goldfinger and Thunderball. And in case you were disappointed at having missed the opportunity to get your hands on one of the stunt cars, the real thing is now up for grabs in London, where RM and Sotheby's will be auctioning it off to the highest bidder. The car in question was prepared by Aston Martin for use in the Bond films. After that it went back to the manufacturer, which then sold it to radio host and philanthropist Jerry Lee, who's been holding onto it for the past 40+ years. In pursuit of his charitable work, Lee is finally putting the car up for sale, with bids expecting to top $5 million when it goes under the hammer on October 27. One of only two made and the only one still in existence, the custom DB5 comes packed with all the extras the Q-Branch installed for Bond's use, from the revolving license plates and tracking device to the oil slick dispenser and smoke screen. 17. Toyota: 3.8 million cars with risky floor mats NHTSA and world's largest automaker warn vehicle owners to remove driver's side floor mats in 7 Lexus and Toyota models. NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Toyota issued a safety warning for 3.8 million Lexus and Toyota cars because of potentially deadly floor mats. In statements released Tuesday, the world's largest automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned drivers to remove the mats or risk a forced-down accelerator pedal that could lead to a fatal crash. The seven models being recalled could potentially have removable mats that would interfere with the pedal and cause it to stick. "A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death," said Toyota in its statement. Though Toyota recalled accessory all-weather floor mats in 2007 for similar problems, NHTSA noted that reports of vehicles accelerating rapidly even after the release of the pedal have continued. In a statement posted on the automaker's Web site earlier this month, Toyota said that preliminary information from investigators indicated that a fatal crash involving a family driving a 2009 ES350 loaned by a local Lexus dealer in San Diego could have been caused by an all-weather floor mat interfering with the accelerated pedal because of a faulty mat installation. "There is an urgent matter," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in the NHTSA statement. "For everyone's sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration." Toyota has announced that it will soon launch a safety recall to redress the problem, but NHTSA and the automaker warn Toyota and Lexus drivers of certain models to remove that floor mats sooner for safety. The Toyota models being impacted are: 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma and 2007-2010 Tundra. The Lexus models facing the safety recall are the 2007-2010 ES 350, and the 2006-2010 IS 250 and IS 350.

  20. American automakers have long struggled to export U.S. made vehicles to overseas markets. BMW, on the other hand, has apparently had no such problem. After 15 years of building cars and SUVs in Spartanburg, South Carolina the company has now shipped over one million cars to overseas markets. That's nearly two-thirds of all of the production from the plant. When the Spartanburg plant first opened in 1994, it only built 3 series sedans. Within a couple of years, the Z3 roadster was added, followed by the original X5. Ever since the 3 was dropped from the South Carolina production schedule, the plant has been the sole worldwide source for each of the vehicles it has built
