  5. NO WORLD CUP TELECASTS ON TV NEXT YEAR? --------------------------------------- SINGAPORE - Could Singaporean television viewers miss out on next year's Fifa World Cup in South Africa? The shocking possibility has been raised following an ominous announcement by SingTel and StarHub last night. The joint statement not only revealed that both telcos had submitted a joint bid for broadcast rights - and were not in a bidding war, as recent media reports had speculated - it also hinted that, even with their joint resources and their readiness to forego profit from the telecast, the telcos were unable to meet Fifa's terms. "The cost of the World Cup has escalated substantially," said the two telcos, whose offer was higher in value than StarHub's four years ago. "In an attempt to reach a value that is acceptable to Fifa to bring the World Cup to Singapore, the price offered to Fifa would sacrifice all World Cup margins for both SingTel and StarHub while keeping the price affordable for consumers. "However, we have yet to reach an agreement with Fifa." Asked if the bid had basically failed, SingTel and StarHub told MediaCorp it was "premature" to comment. Citing "confidential commercial terms", they added: "We will continue to negotiate with Fifa in an attempt to reach an agreement." Football's world governing body has reportedly already accepted offers from more than 200 countries. Industry sources described the amount Fifa is asking for as exorbitant. If the ruling body refuses to lower its terms, sports fans here face possibly two choices: Miss out on the World Cup on local television, or volunteer to pay a far higher price. During the 2006 Germany World Cup, fans here paid $26.25 to watch the matches on SCV. The two telcos have thus far kept mum on their joint bid despite recent public debate being premised on their bids being separate ones, and whether this competition would drive up prices for viewers. So, when did they decide to file a joint bid and was it at the urging of local media authorities? In response to MediaCorp's questions, the two telcos said the collaboration was agreed upon "some time ago, and was initiated jointly without influence from other parties". They had "mutually identified the specific circumstances of World Cup (i.e. the limited opportunity to deliver a differentiated service and viewing experience to World Cup viewers) and the opportunity they represent for sharing the broadcast rights". Fifa's projected television broadcast earnings for the 2010 tournament is some billion. This includes ESPN StarSports' US$40 million to beam the matches to the Indian sub-continent, and the US$100 million America's ESPN and ABC jointly paid for the World Cup next year and in 2014. As above, we may not get to view the live telecast of World Cup matches .
  6. Because they will be out-sourced too....gone will be the days that you have to run to a tree and back...or maybe it's already gone since the days that i was being tekan by the PTI. Ah...Sweet memories..... Apr 14, 2010 Civilian trainers for SAF Outsourcing non-core services frees up soldiers for combat jobs By Jermyn Chow THE days of the much-feared physical training instructor of the Singapore Armed Forces are numbered. That taskmaster in a white singlet who puts every chrome dome through punishing physical training will be replaced by civilians, as physical training throughout the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is outsourced to commercial fitness outfits. The Straits Times understands that the PTIs, known as fitness specialists in the SAF, will replaced by the end of next year. Would we miss one of the fittests guys in our Army Services?

  10. *just for laughs..is not directed to any individuals.. Miss Singapore Universe One of the main reasons why in recent years the S'porean Government has always ensured that their Miss Universe representatives were of tertiary level education or higher was because of the following incident which occurred not too many years ago. It is the final round of the Miss Universe Pageant and the 3 finalists, Miss USA , Miss Thailand and Miss Singapore were being asked 3 simple questions: MC: The first question is name me an electrical appliance starting with 'L' Miss USA : Lamp Miss Thailand: Light bulb Miss Singapore : LADIO Judge: No, no, Radio does not start with the letter 'L' MC: I am going to give you 3 more chances; Now, name me an animal starting with the letter 'L' Miss USA : Lion Miss Thailand : Leopard Miss Singapore : LABBIT Judge: No, no, no! MC: Your next chance. The name of a famous car that starts with 'L' Miss USA : Lexus Miss Thailand : Lamborghini Miss Singapore : Lolls-Loyce Judge: Oh my God! MC: I am going to give you one last chance! Name me a fruit starting with the letter 'L' Miss USA : Lemon Miss Thailand : Lychee Miss Singapore , with full of confidence, smiles and says: LIEWLIAN!! This is not the end of the story, the Judge consulted the board of judges to determine if Miss Singapore should really be disqualified ; and they decided that since Miss Singapore was having so many problems with the letter 'L', they decided to give her another chance. Judge: OK, the final question is : Name me a human anatomy starting with the letter 'L' Miss USA : Lung (applause) Miss Thailand : Liver (even more applause) Miss Singapore : LAN C*AU ! The Judges fainted..!!! "

  12. Hi all, I suppose for most of us here, we don't often get to take MRT or other forms of public transportation. When I asked my friends, what do you miss most for not taking in MRT, some told me they missed that upclose eye-to-eye stare at the OLs and brushing shoulders with . To some they told me they missed the "luxury" of sleeping in the MRT cabin. So whats yours? Regards,

  18. TWO years after major European brands pulled out of the Singapore Motorshow, the event is set to shrink further. Only five car brands - Honda, Subaru, Nissan, Alfa Romeo and Fiat - have signed up for the show, long recognised as the premier automotive event here. This is less than half the number at the 2006 show, which top European car brands such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes and Volkswagen chose to miss. Of this year's exhibitors, only Honda, Nissan and Subaru are among the top 10 brands here in terms of sales. Despite this, the show will go on, said the Motor Traders Association (MTA), which has been organising the biennial event since it began in 1992. This year's show will also be held earlier - from Sept 26 to Oct 5 instead of its usual November slot - to coincide with the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. The race takes place on Sept 28 and the organisers hope the buzz it creates will lead to heightened interest in the show despite the smaller number of exhibitors. Companies which are giving the show a miss say the returns from it are not worth the investment. Said a Daimler executive: 'For us to do a proper show, we need to spend at least $1 million. We'd rather use the money for something more focused on our customers.' His company, for example, marked the second anniversary of its Alexandra Road Mercedes-Benz brand centre with a $250,000 party for about 700 guests, who were treated to a fashion show and free-flowing champagne. BMW has been holding similar events, including a theme party to showcase its 7-series privilege programme in Perth and a Clean Energy show-and-tell with hydrogen-powered cars. But those who are sticking it out with the motor show beg to differ. Mr Glenn Tan, chief executive of Subaru agent MotorImage, said the $500,000 he will fork out for the show is 'money well spent'. 'Each time, the crowd at our stand grows bigger,' he said. However, figures show that the crowd at the 2006 show was much smaller than the one at the 2004 event: 115,000 compared to 150,000. Exhibitors are banking on new elements to draw petrolheads this year. MotorImage, for instance, is doubling the pleasure for fans of a perennial favourite at the show, stunt driver Russ Swift. This year, Mr Swift will perform with his son Paul. 'With all the hype about F1, we thought two cars performing in tandem will be more fun,' said Mr Tan. Another star at this year's show will be the Rinspeed sQuba, the world's first working submarine car, inspired by James Bond's submersible Lotus in the 1977 movie The Spy Who Loved Me. This year's show will be held at Suntec Singapore, but will occupy just one floor, down from the usual two.
  19. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-642615101667802281 I nice cool morning drive. Motorcycle on my left. Road was wet. This daring taxi charged right up to the motorcyclist backside and wanted to side-swipe me. No choice I had to swerve my car alittle bit to the right to let this speeding taxi thru. Ok...I horned and flashed to show my displeasure to the taxi driver. Thinking all is well and ok....the journey continues.....then I spot this same taxi driver....near Tiong Bahru.......and I guessed taxi also saw me from his rear view mirror.
  20. Seles calls time on tennis career Seles has not played a competitive match since 2003 Former world number one Monica Seles has announced her official retirement from tennis. The 34-year-old won nine Grand Slam singles titles in her career, but has not played competitively since June 2003 because of a foot injury. Seles won her first Grand Slam title in 1990 at the age of just 17 and topped the world rankings the following year. In a horrifying event in April 1993 she was stabbed on court in Germany and spent 28 months away from the sport. After returning in 1995 Seles managed to win one final Grand Slam title, the Australian Open in 1996, finishing with a major haul of four Australian, three French and two US Open titles. [/size] Monica Seles is one of the great champions in the history of the WTA Tour Larry Scott, WTA Tour chief executive "Tennis has been and will always be a huge part of my life," said Seles. "I have for some time considered a return to professional play, but I have now decided not to pursue that." She added: "I will continue to play exhibitions, participate in charity events, promote the sport, but will no longer plan my schedule around the tour. "I look forward to pursuing other opportunities with the same passion and energy that fuelled my dedication to tennis and to devote more time to two of my passions - children and animals. "I especially want to thank all my wonderful, loyal fans for all of their support for me over the years. "They have inspired me throughout my career in the good times and comforted me in the bad times. = "I will miss them all as much as I will miss competing in the game of tennis." Larry Scott, chief executive of the WTA Tour, said: "Monica Seles is one of the great champions in the history of the WTA Tour. "She is an inspiration and role model for millions of fans throughout the world." The native Yugoslav became an American citizen in 1994 and talked of a comeback just last year after spending over four years out of the sport. "I certainly would not ever be able to do a full schedule again, because of the foot," she said in 2007. "But I'm thinking about the Slams and about some of the better tournaments that lead into them."
