  1. https://www.reuters.com/science/israeli-scientists-create-model-human-embryo-without-eggs-or-sperm-2023-09-07/ Reuters September 8, 20237:46 AM GMT+8Updated 11 hours ago REHOVOT, Israel, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Scientists in Israel have created a model of a human embryo from stem cells in the laboratory, without using sperm, eggs or a womb, offering a unique glimpse into the early stages of embryonic development. The model resembles an embryo at day 14, when it acquires internal structures but before it lays down the foundations for body organs, according to the team at Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science. The scientists' work was published in the journal Nature on Wednesday after a pre-print came out in June, during the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR)'s annual meeting in Boston. The Israeli team emphasised that they were a long way from being able to create an embryo from scratch. "The question is, when does an embryo model become considered an embryo? When that happens, we know the regulations. At the moment we are really, really far off from that point," said team leader Jacob Hanna. However, they said the work could open the door to new ways to test the effect of drugs on pregnancies, better understand miscarriages and genetic diseases, and perhaps even to grow transplant tissues and organs. "They are not identical. There are differences from human embryos, but still, this is the first time, if you open an atlas or a textbook, you can say - yeah I can really see the similarity between them," said Hanna. He said his team took stem cells derived from adult human skin cells, as well as others cultured in the lab, then reverted the cells to an early state with the potential to develop into different cell types. They then manipulated them to form the basis of something structurally resembling an embryo. It is not an actual or synthetic embryo - a term criticised by the ISSCR and other scientists - rather a model showing how one works. "In about 1 percent of the aggregates we can see that the cells start differentiating correctly, migrating and sorting themselves into the correct structure, and the farthest we could get is day 14 in human embryo development," he said. Their next goal, Hanna said, is to advance to day 21 and also reach a threshold of a 50% success rate. Magdalena Żernicka-Goetz, a professor of development and stem cells at the University of Cambridge, said the study joins six other similar human embryo-like models published from teams around the world this year, including from her lab. "None of these models fully recapitulate natural human development but each adds to ways in which many aspects of human development can now be studied experimentally," she said. The study raises some ethical questions over the possibility of potential future manipulation in human embryo development, Hanna and others noted. He drew a comparison to nuclear physics, however, arguing that you should not stop all research in that field because somebody might choose to make a nuclear bomb. It is important to engage and fully inform the public, he said, with "nothing done in the shadows". Reporting by Rami Amichay and Ari Rabinovitch; editing by Mark Heinrich
  2. I don't know where to post this interesting news (no humsup intention), so I started the thread. Think of it, it is quite scary to guess if the model you are seeing is real or a AI generated fantasy. To our MCF mod, is it ok? Source: https://soranews24.com/2023/05/30/ai-generated-swimsuit-lingerie-model-makes-debut-in-japans-weekly-playboy-magazine【photos】/ “Ai” is a pretty common name for models in Japan, and not just because it’s short and easy to remember. In addition to being a woman’s name, ai is also the Japanese word for “love,” so the flowery, feminine feeling it conjures up is one more way to catch the attention and affection of prospective fans. For example, here’s Ai Satsuki, the newest model being promoted by Japanese publisher Shueisha. But while Ai’s name was given to her by Shueisha, the publisher didn’t make that decision just because they hope people will fall in love with her, but because her images are generated by AI. Ai made her professional debut this Monday, appearing in the latest issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Playboy magazine. A separate entity from the American Playboy magazine), Weekly Playboy is best known for its gravure photo spreads focusing on models in swimsuits, lingerie, and other revealing outfits. In its announcement tweet, Weekly Playboy describes Ai as being “stuffed full of men’s ideals” and asserts that “Even if she doesn’t actually exist, the love for her that sprouts in your heart is real.” Despite not having a physical form, Ai is officially listed as being 157 centimeters (61,8 inches) tall, as well as being born in Tokyo and enjoying playing video games as a hobby. Along with her appearance in this week’s Weekly Playboy, Shueisha has also released 50-page digital image album for Ai titled Umaretate (“Just Born”), featuring images not included in her Weekly Playboy spread, through its Weekly Playboy Gravure Japan website. “AI gravure models? What do you think?” asked Weekly Playboy in its tweet, prompting responses including: “No scandals. No scheduling problems. No talent agency problems. No appearance fees. Sounds good.” “I want Weekly Playboy to photograph real people.” “Eventually, I think people will come around to appreciating AI gravure models.” “She’s cute!” “I hope this is a one-time thing, and doesn’t take page space away from real gravure models.” “When are we going to see an Ai Satsuki video?” “She’s cute! Following her account and going to keep an eye on what she does next.” “If you put out a physical copy of her photo album, I’m buying it.” “Things are going to get tougher for 3-D women.” “AI gravure photos are beautiful, but I prefer real ones. Actual idols have daily lives and life experiences, and I think that’s what makes fans really feel attached to them and want to help them succeed.” The last comment touches on a characteristic point of gravure idol marketing in Japan: the idea that by purchasing merchandise, attending paid-ticket meet-and-greet events, and otherwise financially supporting their favorite idol, fans are actively supporting her professional aspirations. That unique sense of satisfaction plays a big part in cultivating high-spending superfans, and whether or not a photo-realistic but AI-generated model can form the same emotional connection may be the determining factor in whether or not Shueisha, and other publishers too, press forward with AI gravure models.

  9. Another alarming and sad news. Greed is "eating" into the human flesh. 18-year-old model sells her virginity to Hong Kong businessman for $3.47 million What have Dracula, Nadia Comaneci and an infamous nubile lass wanting to sell her virginity for millions have in common? The answer: They are all from Romania. After making it known to the world last year that she would be putting up her virginity for auction, aspiring model Alexandra Khefren, 18, placed her country back in the spotlight. The country of medieval castles and forests was particularly known for two world-famous icons for decades: the legendary blood-sucking Dracula who terrified movie-goers all over the world and gymnast Comaneci who became an international sporting celebrity after making history with perfect scores at the 1976 Olympics. Khefren, who became an online celebrity following her audacious move, created more buzz late last year when she found an early bidder who was willing to take her for $1.4 million. That's an already obscene sum of money for a sexual transaction but it wasn't enough for her. Finally, she got an offer she simply could not refuse. Last Friday (March 30), she slammed the gavel: It's sold to an unnamed but "friendly" Hong Kong businessman who will blow $3.47 million for the 'honour' of deflowering her. Khefren made her announcement on Cinderella Escorts website, a Germany-based agency that sells virginity of teenage girls online. She had said she got the idea to sell off her virginity when she saw the Hollywood movie Indecent Proposal which sees Robert Redford paying US $1 million to have sex with Demi Moore. Her parents were reportedly outraged, but Khefren was adamant about going ahead with her plan as she wanted to give them a good life, buy a house and also get a good education for herself. Despite criticisms reported in the media, she remained unflinching. She would rather benefit from the sale of her chastity than give it to a "future friend" who might leave her anyway, she said. The other person who will profit from it is the agency owner, 26-year-old Jan Zakobielski, who had told the media that he was enjoying a lucrative business. Zakobielski, who will take 20 per cent, told The Daily Mail in December: "No-one makes these young women do anything they don't want to do. They have their own minds and their own opinions on sexuality." http://www.asiaone.com/asia/18-year-old-model-sells-her-virginity-hong-kong-businessman-347-million
  10. How many of you actually pay attention to automotive brand or their logo, and are curious how a car model get it name? The key objective of this thread is to allow us to share what we know about a particular brand, model and/or it logo. Let me start with the follow brands. More to be added. Alfa Romeo I own up first, I didn't know that the word ALFA is actually an abbreviation, which stand for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, whereas ROMEO is the name of a Neapolitan Entrepreneur, Nicola Romeo (who take control of the company in 1915), instead of it founder, Alexandre Darracq. I will skip the history part, as I don't wish you to fall asleep (as I normally do during history lesson ). But the most interesting part is with it logo, and again I have to admit, I have all the while thought that the snake-like creature on the right side of the logo is spitting fire, while the "fire" it is actually a human at the mouth of the "snake"! So have anyone managed to guess how the logo come about? Why is something so cruel being featured on the company logo? OK, there is 2 version of the story actually. Version #1: From Wikipedia Alfa Romeo's logo incorporates two heraldic devices traditionally associated with its birthplace, the city of Milan: a red cross, from the emblem of Milan, and the biscione (a heraldic charge showing on argent an azure serpent in the act of consuming a human; usually a child and sometimes described as a Moor or an Ottoman Turk), a crowned viper swallowing a Moor—emblem of the House of Visconti, rulers of the city in the 14th century. Version #2: From Alfa Romeo On the left: the red cross on white field is the symbol of Milan, the hometown of Alfa Romeo. On the right: the symbol of one of the most important families in the history of Milan (and Italy), the Visconti family – the family that ruled Milan. There are a lot of legends about the origins of this heraldic symbol, representing a mythological animal with a human in his mouth (some believe it to be a dragon, but most likely a snake). During the time of the crusades, Otone Visconti , the founder of Visconti Family and a knight, fought against a noble Saracen knight (nomad from the Syrian Desert that bordered the Roman Empire). Otone beat the Saracen knight and, following the tradition, took the symbols the Saracen carried on his shield: a snake with a human in his mouth. At first glance, it looks like the snake is eating the human. Instead, the human is coming out of the snake a "new man," purified and renewed. The meaning: The snake is a circular animal (a snake can assume a circular position) and is an animal of the changing – able to change his skin regularly and totally renew or rebirth himself. BMW OK, I believe most, if not all MCFer knew that BMW stands for Bavarian Motor Works (Bayerische Motoren Werke in German). But how does the blue propeller styled logo come about? Although some associated it with a spinning aircraft propeller (BMW was once in aviation business too - producing aircraft engine under Rapp Motorenwerke), it is actually derived from the logo of Rapp Motorenwerke, from which the BMW company grew, whereas blue and white is the official colors of the Bavarian flag.

Hi guys I notice something In the overseas forums like USA U.K. And EU a lot of them boast about their super cars and their high life But when I throw a fun challenge ( just for the sake of fun) to them to buy a similar model in Singapore they turn quiet and try to change topic. I mean if they are brave to take up the challenge they should try buying the same luxury model and accept the challenge Eg Bentley bentayaga forums

  15. Don’t get too worried or excited. This thread is about Alternate Way of Automotive Review & Evaluation. Subscription and contribution to this thread are welcome, but with strings attached (pun intended). And dear moderators, this is not just another TKR thread, as it is closely related to cars. We have seen / read many various types of car review, whereby chunks of numbers are shown, in attempt to convince potential buyers on how big or spacious the car is. But as a layman, most will have difficulty trying to visualize what these figures meant to them and their occupants. And not to forget we might not have the slightest idea how to maximize the use of space within our expensive ride… … This thread shall cover rides as small as a Kei car, to large people mover. Here are few examples, and you may like to make a guess of the model name, Ahem err, I am referring to the CAR model name… Which kei car has a boot that can accommodate a person in it? Which Mazda model has such a tiny boot? Which sedan has such a spacious rear seats? Which conti has such flat floor boot? Which SUV allow such easy access to the driver seat? Which Toyota model has such a nice looking interior? Which hybrid model has such a short bonnet? Which MPV still have such user-unfriendly B-pillar? For those that wonder what to expect, see some example in these posts I made earlier: Honda Odyssey http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5864291 Honda Jade http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5866602 Alphard & Stepwgn http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5868342

  17. First photo of the entry level EV from Tesla. It will be officially unveil in the next couple of hours. Stay tuned. In order to be as fair as possible, there will be a different queue for each region. And as a thank you to our current owners, existing customers will get priority in each region. Model 3 production is scheduled to begin in late 2017. When production begins, we will begin deliveries in North America starting on the West Coast, moving east. As we continue to ramp production, we will begin deliveries in Europe, APAC and right-hand drive markets. It is not possible to ship to all regions simultaneously because regulators in each part of the world have slightly different production requirements. Staggering deliveries in this way also allows us to provide the best possible customer experience. We recognize that everyone wants to get their Model 3 as quickly as possible. Our overarching goal is to maximize total customer happiness within the bounds of what is physically possible. Tune in to the Model 3 unveil on March 31st at 8:30pm PT on Tesla.com. We can't wait to show you what we've been working on.
  18. This thread arises of a discussion initiate in the car/lifestyle section. However, some very interesting points came up as to how Singapore properties should be considered. The emphasis is deliberate as the model only works for Singapore. There are a lot of property gurus here, so please ignore this un-sophisticated newbie who is just venturing into property and trying to justify his purchases. Fundamental assumption : Singapore will continue to exist as a nation or if not, a quasi nation with independence and that the calibre of national leadership remain high. Let with with an analogy from Singapore/Malaya history; Rubber planting. As all Singaporean students knows from their history books, rubber tree takes 5 - 7 years to mature. So, any businessman intending to venture into this industry has to 1. Buy the land 2. Clear the land 3. Plant the cuttings and continue to care for the younglings These are the years where there are negative profits as the businessman has to continue to pour money into his investment with no guarantee on returns (storm blows down estate, commodity prices collapse, disease toll on trees, etc). However, if the plantation make it through and extraction starts, profits will start to flow in and can continue to flow for another 25 years or more. Also, the rubber estate itself also gain value as it could be sold to buyers with a risk premium for taking on the early year risk. One thing that a number of people keep telling me is rental margins and so on... but they always left me scratching my head, the time horizon they use is very short. Like rubber planting, buying property for me is for the long haul with time horizon of 30 - 40 years or more. Analogous 1. Buy the property 2. Do interior finishing 3. Continue to care for the property These are the years where profits may be negative (if you cannot find a tenant) as the investors has to pour money into the investment. However, once the mortgage is paid off, profits will start to flow in and continue to flow as long as you own that property. That is not in addition to capital appreciation if you sell off the property. So, the total cost and total profit that can be taken from the property over a time horizon of 30 - 40 years is actually more important then short term rental margins gained while the mortgage is still in force.
