  1. from today's ST.... TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp, Japan's biggest auto maker, is considering delaying the introduction of some new models by as much as half a year amid a series of recalls and quality problems, the Wall Street Journal said on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. Toyota, which has built its reputation on offering safe and reliable cars at reasonable prices, is plagued with a rise in vehicle recalls and faces a legal probe into its past recall practice. To improve quality, the car maker is considering adding as much as three to six months to development lead time, which is usually two to three years, affecting a relatively wide range of projects, the paper said. The next Sienna minivan, Solara sports coupe and Avalon sedan are among models that could be affected, it said. Toyota spokeswoman Shiori Hashimoto said the company would not comment on its strategy and the timing of product introductions. Toyota has recalled more than one million vehicles in Japan so far this year and issued a recall of some 400,000 SUVs in the United States, its single-biggest market, in July. It is being investigated by prosecutors in Kumamoto, southern Japan, over whether its quality-control managers wrongly delayed a recall filing that could have prevented a road accident in 2004 that injured a couple and their three young children. Toyota has forecast group-based global sales of 8.85 million units and production of 9.06 million units for 2006 - figures that could soon see it overtake General Motors Corp as the world's biggest car maker. -- REUTERS

  12. Nissan to launch 40 new models in three years to 2008: report TOKYO : Japanese automaker Nissan aims to launch about 40 new car models and spend 1.2 trillion yen (10.9 billion dollars) on research and development in the three years to March 2008, a report said. The mid-term plan set to be announced Monday is meant to make it part of the world's third biggest auto group together with its largest shareholder, Renault SA of France, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said. Sales at Nissan are projected to reach 4.5 million vehicles by March 2008, up 50 percent from the year to March, the paper said, citing company sources. Ford Motor Co., the world's current third largest automaker behind General Motors Corp. and number two Toyota Motor Corp., sold 6.72 million vehicles in 2003. Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. spokesman Yasuhito Chinone said the report was mere speculation. "It is a totally speculative article," he told AFP Sunday. "We have not announced such a thing and there is no truth to it." Chinone said the company would explain its mid-term plan Monday when it unveils its earnings results for the year to March. The paper reported that Nissan would boost its research and development staff to 20,000 by March 2008 from the current 15,000, expand production facilities in Thailand and Indonesia and open an assembly plant in Egypt. Top shareholder Renault holds a 44.3 percent stake in Nissan. - AFP

  18. JAPANESE SPORTS CARS OVERTAKE EUROPEAN MODELS HERE J-POP on wheels Call it J-Speed: Hip, sleek and at half the price, Japanese sports models are giving European marques a run for their money By Christopher Tan THEY'RE hip, they're fast and they're hot. Meet the J-pop of cars: sports models from Japan which are feeding a growing fad here. In just a decade, these cars have zoomed ahead of the fast and the furious from Europe, fuelled largely by lower prices. Most cost around $150,000 with certificate of entitlement - half the price of the cheapest Porsche, against which some of them can give a good run for their money. The x-factor -- the fact that it was in the movie X-Men II -- drew Ms Linda Lim to the Mazda RX-8.-- BRYAN VAN DER BEEK Price aside, the larger variety of models has also helped rev up sales, which received a further boost recently when Wolverine in the action movie X-Men II gave cachet to the Mazda RX-8. Said banking executive Linda Lim, 27, who is sharing the car with her lawyer boyfriend: 'I saw it in X-Men II and it's so cool.' Today, more than 1,000 J-sports cars can be found on Singapore roads, exceeding the 900 or so European sports marques such as Porsche, Ferrari, Lotus and Maserati. It is a significant growth in 10 years, from just two models - the Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi Evolution - to a crop that now includes the Honda Accord Euro R, Honda Integra R, Nissan 350Z, Toyota Celica and, of course, the Mazda RX-8. Each of these cars packs more than 200 horsepower and can easily exceed 200kmh. Related links:
  19. Here's a brief photo history of Mazda's previous rotary models that were seen in Singapore: The earliest was the 1968 R100 Familia Coupe based on the Mazda 1000 Familia at that time. The Mazda 1000 was also Bertone designed just like its bigger 'sister', the 1500.
