  3. http://news.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews...808-293325.html The Star/Asia News Network Monday, Aug 08, 2011 A GROUP of friends had a shock of their life when they found that they "captured" images of a spirit in the photographs they took during a Hungry Ghost ritual recently. China Press reported that the images, which looked like a paper ghost, appeared in the photographs taken by the restaurant workers. The group had conducted prayers at about 12.30am on the first day of the Hungry Ghost Month at a roadside in Malacca. The group later decided to hold another prayer at the same site and were relieved that the spirit did not appear in any of the photographs that they took. However, a photography expert said the image of the so-called spirit might be just a reflection from a glass window.
  4. A local model, Han Hui Zhen, says that she is constantly propositioned by rich men. Once, a prominent businessman even wanted her as a kept woman, offering to pay her 30,000 ringgit (S$12,200) a month. The 22-year-old girl first started modelling four years ago, posing in bridal gowns, sportswear, swimwear and working for IT shows. She told Lianhe Wanbao that the life of a model is not easy, with men constantly asking to sleep with her. "I started out as a freelance model and had to search for clients by myself. Eventually, my phone number went public and I started receiving lewd phone calls at night, asking me how much it would cost for a night with me. "They would call again even after I rejected them, even offering a higher price the next time round!" During a fundraiser in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a well-known businessman wanted her as a kept woman for three months. He was willing to fork out 30,000 ringgit (S$12,200) a month. She rejected him. "He was offering me 10 times more than what I was earning in a month, but I could not accept it. Firstly, I have a boyfriend. And I intend to model as a career, so I cannot let making a quick buck ruin my image." Last December, Han was asked to attend a company's annual dinner and dance last December. A man approached her after the event, claiming that he was the owner of a hotel and wanted her as a kept woman. "He asked me how much it would cost a month, and said he had bedded several local actresses before. "I was shocked and left immediately."

  11. "The main salary component for senior officers that varies with economic growth is the GDP Bonus. GDP bonus is zero if GDP growth is 2% or below, but accounts for a maximum of about 1/4 of the annual salary of senior officers, or 8 months, when the GDP growth exceeds 10%. Hence, during the downturn in 2009 and 2010, no GDP Bonus was paid. This contributed to a 18-22.5% reduction in annual salaries of senior officers for the two years. This year, in 2011, based on the exceptionally high 2010 GDP growth, officers will get the maximum rate of GDP Bonus," Deputy Prime Minister Teo in Parliament today......

  14. Optimism at career fair by S Ramesh 05:55 AM Jan 28, 2011 SINGAPORE - More job options and possibly higher starting salaries. That's the upbeat mood among those who attended the annual National University of Singapore (NUS) Career Fair yesterday. There was a buzz as undergraduates made their way through the fair, with a record 145 employers from diverse sectors taking part, offering some 4,200 positions. One of the fair's biggest participants is the public service, with nearly every ministry and statutory board having a booth to explain employment opportunities to graduates. The NUS graduate employment survey is expected in April, but there is already an upbeat sense on starting salaries. Professor Tan Eng Chye, NUS Deputy President (Academic), said: "For graduates, you are talking about a salary range from $2,500 to $3,500, depending on the professions. But sentiments are very positive." Graduate Alex Liu, said: "All of us are pretty optimistic." A Japan Pavilion is also part of the fair for the first time. Ten Japanese chemical companies with operations here are showcasing the sector, offering 80 jobs. To give its undergraduates a leg up, NUS is working with the Singapore Human Resource Institute (SHRI) to provide them employment and internship opportunities. SHRI executive director David Ang said: "We can be more focused when guiding the graduates on the kinds of jobs they want. At the same time, we also inform the career centre about the needs of employers." Some 7,000 students are expected to benefit from the fair over the next two days. 15. Si bei ho....i want to join civil svc Civil servants to get 2-mth year-end payment Posted: 24 November 2010 1721 hrs Photos1 of 1 Twitter Messenger SINGAPORE: Civil servants will receive a total year-end variable payment amounting to two months. This comprises the Annual Variable Component (AVC) of one month and a Non-Pensionable Annual Allowance (NPAA), also known as the 13th month payment, of one month. This is in view of the strong economic recovery. The Singapore economy has recovered strongly and expanded by 17.9% in the first half of 2010. The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) has forecast the 2010 GDP growth at around 15%. Civil servants received a mid-year AVC of 0.5 month and a one-off dollar quantum of $300 in July. Together with the year-end payment, the total variable payment for 2010 will be 2.5 months and $300. In March 2011, eligible civil servants will be paid a Special Variable Payment (SVP). The SVP, formerly known as Growth Bonus, is payable when there is exceptionally good economic growth, and the quantum varies depending on individual performance. In March 2011, good performers will receive one month of SVP and better performers will receive more, up to 1.6 months, while poor performers will not receive any SVP.
  16. First, local radio DJ, actor and getai veteran Marcus Chin made the news after he began dating his personal assistant, Miss Eileen Cheah, while still married to his wife, 54-year-old Murong Ying. Now, the 57-year-old is in the news again, after his estranged wife is claiming a monthly maintenance allowance of S$5,000, which Chin has allegedly promised her earlier. According to Shin Min Daily News, she had also asked him to give her S$1m to return to Taiwan. Through her lawyer, Mr Sng Kheng Huat, she is also asking for $20,000 to be put in a trust fund for her by Chin. Mr Sng claims this is because Madam Murong does not trust Chin after he left her for Miss Cheah, despite the ex-wife giving up her Taiwan citizenship to be with Chin in Singapore. Their separation, in October 2008, was initiated by Chin. When they separated, he wrote her a letter saying he would give her $5,000 a month. And he paid her that sumfor eight months. But for several months after that, he reduced the amountto $1,000, the court heard. In November last year, the court ordered him to give Madam Murong $3,000 a month and another $600 for the HDB loan instalment. Madam Murong then asked for the sum to be increased to $5,000, what Chin had promised in his letter. On Monday afternoon in the Family Court, Mr Sng cross-examined Chin in a three-hour session, reported The New Paper. Details of Chin's 'splurges' were read out by Mr Sng, such as a party held by him and his girlfriend when their baby girl was a month old in September. The party had amounted to $48,000. He also mentioned two pieces of jewellery worth nearly $1,600 that were charged to his credit card in May. Another item, a camera, which was bought by his 'mistress' was also brought up, bought using a supplementary credit card that he had given Miss Cheah. Miss Cheah had also signed for a dinner worth $559 in May. Chin disputed that he should hand over $1m to Madam Murong on the basis that she had no relatives in Singapore, and only a few friends when Mr Sng asked if it was reasonable of him to do so. He said: "She married me and got Singapore citizenship. So can we also say, because of that, she earned a million dollars already?
  17. I am kind of curious with all the money/salary polls. A lot of them asking how much you earn. But how about how much you realistically spend? I think the amount varies a lot so no options is given. For me, $500 parents $400 resturants $300 groceries $300 misc bills like power, hp , internet $500 hawker food, daily expenses $400 toys, misc buys $500 overeas travel So that is like $3000. And I am happy already. Why is there a need for rmore money? If you can live in a HDB flat, take bus/mrt life is probably quite relax.

  20. I know we must be respectful of others' beliefs but people should also be considerate when practising their customs. Every year, I know it is the start, middle and end of 7th month by the epic amount of smoke and ash in the air. Worse still, every patch of grass have those red incense sticks bordering them. To my knowledge, even Tiong Kok never practice 7th month anymore. Isn't there a more civic minded way of doing things?
  21. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...bs_halfway.html Stars performing at one of the biggest Getai shows of the Hungry Ghost season last night (August 12) found the show thrown into chaos when one-half of the famous Ming Zhu Sisters duo collapsed suddenly, wailing and sobbing incoherently. STOMPer Ian was enjoying the Geylang Serai show from the side of the stage when he heard a woman wailing loudly and sobbing as if something terrible had happened. He was shocked to see Zhu Li Li, younger sister of Getai duo Ming Zhu Sisters, sobbing uncontrollably as her stunned sister and colleagues tried to calm her down. Despite he screams of protest, the getai veteran was carried out into the open field to get more air. Shortly after an ambulance arrived to take her to the hospital, incense and hell money were burnt as an offering to appease the spirits. Though clearly shaken, the stars continued with the show, says an impressed STOMPer Ian. Ian says of the incident: "I was standing near the backstage area. "Zhu Li Li and her sister were part of the six-man hosting team for the night and it was their turn to rest as another singer had gone on stage to perform. "I saw her taking a seat and drinking water when suddenly, she appeared to have collapsed on the floor with sobs. "Her sister was standing next to her and appeared visibly shocked but managed to react quickly enough to support her. "Stars in the waiting area immediately came to help lift her onto a chair but she refused to sit. Her wailing got louder at this point as she begged everyone to let go of her. "They must have thought she was possessed by something supernatural as her elder sister began to ask: 'Who are you?' (你是谁?) repeatedly. "Zhu Li Li did not respond and just kept crying loudly. "Later, I heard from one of the crew that her limbs had gone cold as she collapsed. "They tried to get her fresh air by carrying her out into the open field despite her protests but the crowd that gathered around defeated that purpose. "An ambulance arrived within 10 minutes and she was taken away. "Her sister, who looked scared and confused, along with other stars, began to burn some offerings and incense at the spot where she fainted. "She then wiped away her tears and continued hosting the show with a smile on her face. "It is commendable that she managed to remain so professional despite her worries". Go to Getai A-Go-Go to find out more about the Ming Zhu Sisters.
