  1. Video: http://www.razor.tv/video/535694 You have heard of dashboard cameras in cars. Now, it is the turn of the bicycle-cam. Bikes fitted with video-recording devices are becoming an increasingly common sight on Singapore's roads. Riders use them to gather evidence if they get into an accident
  2. With more motorists installing surveillance cameras in their vehicles, some have taken to playing traffic vigilantes when they capture footage of others breaking the rules. "It's like a neighbourhood watch group, except it's on the road," said Mr Jonathan Thong, 45, who has submitted 12 such videos to the Traffic Police in the past year. The project manager and father of two believes he is helping to promote road safety. If errant drivers know their behaviour might be recorded and reported to the authorities, they may be encouraged to be more courteous on the road, he said. The videos he sent to the Traffic Police were taken on different occasions and included incidents of motorists who made illegal turns, crossed double white lines and stopped in yellow boxes. 3. An average of about 40 motorists were caught each day for illegally modifying their vehicles in the first six months of this year. Their infringements include modifications to exhausts, lights and adding tinted windows, which are against the law. Latest figures from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) show that there were an average of 1,240 cases a month from January to June - almost 10 times the 146 monthly average in 2008. An LTA spokesman attributed the increase in the number of vehicle owners nabbed for such offences to stepped-up enforcement and more tip-offs received from the public. In a bid to rev up business squeezed by loan curbs introduced six months ago, motor firms are starting to roll out no-frills car leasing plans which require lower monthly payments. In a bid to rev up business squeezed by loan curbs introduced six months ago, motor firms are starting to roll out no-frills car leasing plans which require lower monthly payments. They come on the back of "traditional" leasing plans introduced as early as May to woo buyers. But response from drivers has been lukewarm, despite advertising and marketing efforts by several firms to drum up interest. Perhaps it is still early days, but Mr Anthony Lim, director of credit company Kenso Leasing, said: "It's the Asian mentality that... only those who can't afford to buy, lease." 11. Romantic meals right at the edge of the Singapore River will soon become a thing of the past at Robertson Quay and Clarke Quay, when new rules on outdoor refreshment areas kick in this week. Under new guidelines from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), diners' tables cannot be placed right by the riverside. The aim, it said, is to "free up the riverfront for public access". The new rules are effective immediately, but the URA said it would give operators "sufficient time" to clear the riverside tables. Outdoor tables on the side of the walkway away from the river can stay, and restaurants can also apply to develop second-storey extensions from buildings to create dining areas there. 12. Wanted to post the pictures of this car for quite a while, but didn't upload the photo to my laptop yet. Anyway, this was taken about 3 weeks ago at Mariott Hotel at Orchard Road. Waited quite a while for the crowd to disperse before taking some photos of the car. It was parked beside a Maserati, opposite a Ferarri California, and yet, it got more attention than those two cars combined. (Actually, not many people took photos of the other two cars, but there was quite a group of people taking photos of this). Anyone venture a guess what this car is?
  13. what are the reasons? hmmm... - personal agenda against her? - FTs are being portrayed badly? - the word "ponding" is used? in any case, it's mediacorp's big loss... i think she's the most talented artiste around
  14. look around your neighbours and watch the FT coming with infested luggages. Once open, it crawls without knowing and multiplys as it moves on. Just seen one family threw away all mattresses with a bold written note not to be recycled. Those renting their flats or rooms out, make sure this will not happen. Once the bugs are hiding inside the PVC trunking, you have to vacate the house for pest control. Bugs dont live on high temperature. Beware even you are traveling, staying in hotel and back home, watch those bags lying around on the carpet/floor. Always air your bags under sun before storage.
  15. Ok. Starting this thread to see if there is any interesting development. Guess on the on set, the ganjiong spider buyers blink first. And now, with 2 wks more to go, will the dealers start panicking or reducing prices.

  20. Agree having computer wizards around is good but the fact remains that the good doc ignores or seems to be unaware that many such positions are overwhelmed by foreigners especially from a particular nation. How will locals fare? Was involved in a big construction project next to Jalan Buroh and the main contractor employed a NUS computer PHD holder to be their planner. He was a nice chap from Myanmar and when I asked why he did not teach or do further research in local institutions, he said, "Friend, do you know how many computer PHD holders are out there in the market? I got this job because I went knocking on the (main contractor's name) office to show my sincerity." And that was in 1998. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/premium/forum-...needed-20130409 More home-grown geeks needed Published on Apr 09, 2013 ONE of the pillars of modern technology is computer software code. While many of our students can use computer programs, few can write code. This deficiency must be rectified for us to remain competitive, create well-paying jobs and become self-sufficient in providing for our information technology (IT) needs. According to an article in The Telegraph last month, the demand for IT specialists in Britain is growing at four times the rate of the overall workforce. In the United States, there will be an estimated 1.4 million computer jobs by 2020, but only 400,000 computer science students. To address this demand in Britain, code clubs have been set up to teach coding in schools to children aged nine to 11. In January last year, computer science was added to the English Baccalaureate. By September this year, computer science will be added to the British curriculum as a fourth science. Nearer home, schools in Vietnam teach programming to young children as part of the curriculum. It is time the Ministry of Education faced this challenge. Fully funded coding lessons at graded levels akin to music exams, with recognised certification at the end of eight years, should be made available in all schools to pupils aged 10 and older. Computer science should also be more widely offered as an O- and A-level subject. There must also be more places for computer science students at our tertiary institutions. The ministry must regularly consult businesses to match students' software skills with those sought by industries. For example, many of the insurance industry's computer programs still run on Fortran and Cobol, but these languages have been phased out of the polytechnic curriculum. Computers are needed for the smooth running of almost all infrastructure in Singapore as well as in our military defence. Hence, we need home-grown geeks to keep our economy running, and generate products and services that will attract investors, as well as help in the defence of Singapore, especially against the growing threat of cyber terrorism. 21. Less can be more... and being quiet can say more than any amount of words. Knowing when to stop, with words as well as actions, is often the best way to handle complexity. "Criticisms can be appropriate and important, especially in a business setting when someone isn't doing his job. The problem is, when it comes to criticizing, many do not know when to stop. We keep cutting loose after the point has been made. Sometimes, we cannot stop even when we know doing so will only create ill wil, with no positive change whatsoever. This tends to make life much more complicated than it has to be".
  22. Talk about productivity, soon we will see these machines in the foodcourt and hawker centre :D
  23. Motorists who speed, beat the red light or drive carelessly within enhanced school zones will be slapped with a demerit point under enhanced road safety measures rolled out by the Ministry of Home Affairs. These zones have red textured surfaces on the road and special road markings and signs to remind motorists to slow down and look out for schoolchildren. The additional demerit point will cause a new driver who is on probation to have his licence revoked if he is caught, said Second Minister for Home Affairs S Iswaran during the Committee of Supply debate yesterday. Several Members of Parliament (MPs), such as Dr Janil Puthucheary and Mr Gan Thiam Poh, had earlier raised concerns over the increase in traffic violations, even though the number of fatal accidents decreased last year. There is also a trend of worsening road habits and behaviours, MP Christopher de Souza noted. Following a
