  3. in fact, if you guys and gals notice in s'pore or elsewhere, most of the self made big tks are boh tak che or have actually little formal eduacation. they still succeed in their respective busineses. the degree holders, including the first class honors holders end up working for the boh tak che towkays. why? simple because the highly educated ones have been successful in their acedemic lives and do not want/need to take unnecessary risks by doing businesses, thus more secured taking salary from the tks. the self made tks, on the other hand, have the drive, and are forced to work extra hard just to become successful since they do not have the "educational" advantage. majority of the s'pore self-made billionaires are in this boh tak che category, believe it or not.
  4. Kimi Raikkonen set for Formula 1 return after signing a two-year deal with Lotus Renault GP Lotus Renault GP have confirmed that former world champion Kimi Raikkonen will return to the Formula One grid next season after signing a two-year deal with the team. Back in action: Kimi Raikkonen won the F1 world title with Ferrari in 2007 Photo: AP By Emily Benammar 8:15AM GMT 29 Nov 2011 The Finnish driver, who walked away from Formula One at the end of the 2009 season in order to compete in the World Rally Championship for two years, lifted the F1 world title in 2007 while driving with Ferrari. Lotus Renault GP looked set to announce another driver after Robert Kubica last week said he was unlikely to return next season as he continues with his recovery from a near fatal rallying accident in February. Thrilled to be back on the scene, Raikkonen said: "I'm delighted to be coming back to Formula 1 after a two-year break, and I'm grateful to Lotus Renault GP for offering me this opportunity "My time in the World Rally Championship has been a useful stage in my career as a driver, but I can't deny the fact that my hunger for F1 has recently become overwhelming. "It was an easy choice to return with Lotus Renault GP as I have been impressed by the scope of the team's ambition. Now I'm looking forward to playing an important role in pushing the team to the very front of the grid." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorspor...Renault-GP.html

  6. We have the topic by cook1234 about the nicest plate we have come across. What about the most expensive plate we have heard about to be transacted in Singapore? Singapore is a small island with many wealthy people and many multimillionaires. Certainly most of the rich care about 'face'. <In March 1997, two brothers went to the High Court to claim for the right to car licence plate S333P. But the case was dismissed the case as LTA rules do not allow numbers to be transferred. Experts valued that the plate could be worth $150k.> If 15 years ago, S333P is worth 150K, could it be be worth say 5 times the price now? Anyone have any real experience to share?
  7. SINGAPORE - Singapore's founding leader Lee Kuan Yew is fighting a neurological disease that is making it difficult for him to walk steadily, his daughter revealed Sunday. Lee, who turned 88 in September, suffers from sensory peripheral neuropathy, his physician daughter Lee Wei Ling, director of the National Neuroscience Institute of Singapore, wrote in her weekly Sunday Times newspaper column. "In my father's case, sensory peripheral neuropathy has caused the conduction of sensation from his legs to his spinal cord to be impaired. This makes his walking unsteady, as many Singaporeans have already noticed," she wrote. The column, which deals with a wide range of issues, is closely followed for glimpses into the private life of Singapore's most influential family. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is the columnist's elder brother. Lee Kuan Yew retired from the Cabinet after general elections in May but continues to travel overseas and remains a member of parliament, a post he has held since 1955. He served as prime minister from 1959 to 1990. "His day-to-day condition now fluctuates. On some days he is fairly steady and on other days his balance is poor. The problem is limited to the sensory nerves outside his central nervous system," his daughter wrote. "His brain and muscles are working normally. But being deprived of sensation from his legs means he finds it a challenge to balance. Thus his unsteady walk," she said. Mr Lee, however, is determined to fight the disease and now practises walking on a treadmill at home three times a day without fail. "I have no doubt my father will fight this disease for as long as he thinks he can contribute to Singapore," his daughter said. "I think with medication and simple precaution, he can continue to be of service to his country and the world."

  16. Many know that with the current 4-horse race, TT will most probably win as the votes for the others are split between the 3. My situation is this: 1. I think our president should not be endorsed by the PAP (together with clans, societal groups, 75% of unions, and even taxi drivers) as this person needs to be trusted to challenge them on their actions. 2. While there are many pros and cons of the other 3 candidates, I think any of them would be a better choice than the PAP-endorsed candidate (i.e. TT) I invite fellow forumers, analysts, and fortune tellers to predict who is most likely to win the most votes among the other 3 candidates. But I don't want this thread to discuss "who is better." This will be a never-ending story and TT will win. Maybe we can guess from attendance at rallies, maybe the polls in MCF, maybe the opposition parties (not just SDP) can finally pull together and decided to support a particular candidate... At the end of the day, I intend to vote for the candidate who will most likely garner the most votes other than TT. Maybe if enough people "all in," then there is a chance to tip the scale against the obvious winner. Wishful thinking, I know, but I think it's still better than this endless battle of discussing "who is better" between the 3...

  18. Aug 15 ... remember! ----- Most unlucky day of the Ghost Festival Lianhe Wanbao - 17 hrs 18 mins ago Most unlucky day of the Ghost FestivalA Fengshui master says that 15 August is the most "dangerous" day of the Ghost Month. A Fengshui Master says that 15 August is the most unlucky day in the Seventh Month of the lunar calendar. Also known as the "Ghost Month". Fengshui Master Hong Wei Liang says that the date clashes with the Seventh Month resulting in "bad" energy. The day is known as the "Day of Breaking". According to the master, these are the things to look out for during the Seventh Month. Those who belong under the sign of the Monkey in the Chinese Zodiac should pay special attention to these "guidelines". - Be careful with what you say, and refrain from scolding anyone. Wandering spirits may take offense at your words and mistake you for scolding them. - Avoid speeding. (inSing editors: You should avoid speeding for the other 11 months too.) - Avoid peeing or spitting at the roadside. (inSing editors: You should not be doing this at all!) - Do not step over, or worse, step on offerings for wandering spirits. On 15 August, the most "dangerous" and unlucky day, you can wear red to "block negative energies". You should also reach home by 5pm to minimise any chances where you may meet wandering spirits. The Taoists believe that the gates of hell open during the Seventh Month of the lunar calendar. Many believe that wandering spirits are everywhere during this month. Taoists often make offerings to these spirits to "keep them happy" so they won't cause trouble. The full-month affair culminates on the 15th of the Seventh Lunar Month as the Hungry Ghost Festival. 23. Serious? You guys got it? From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1141023/1/.html Most workers in S'pore had a pay rise this year: Survey Posted: 15 July 2011 0706 hrs SINGAPORE: More than 82 per cent of people working in Singapore received a salary increase this year, a global web survey of 3,200 professionals by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters has revealed. The large increases in Singapore this year came predominantly from the non-financial services industry, as salaries within the financial services sector had a sharp increase last year, said Ms Andrea Ross, managing director at Robert Walters (Singapore and Malaysia), in a statement released on Thursday. Of the 752 respondents in Singapore, 40 per cent received a pay rise of between 1 and 5 per cent, 20 per cent received between 6 and 10 per cent, 14 per cent received between 11 and 20 per cent and 8 per cent received more than 21 per cent. Ms Ross said the results were not surprising given Singapore saw strong economic growth last year. "Another factor contributing to the increase in salaries at the start of the year would be an added focus of companies in trying to retain their top talent by providing competitive remuneration," she said. The global survey, conducted from March to May this year, revealed that the highest pay rises came in Asia - 45 per cent of respondents from China, 26 per cent of respondents in Thailand, 24 per cent of respondents in Malaysia, 22 per cent of respondents in Singapore and 21 per cent of respondents from Hong Kong received salary increases of 10 per cent or more. In comparison, the figure for the United Kingdom was 16 per cent. Elsewhere, locations where a particularly large proportion of professionals received no pay rise at all this year included Ireland (65 per cent of respondents), New Zealand (49 per cent), Belgium (39 per cent) and Australia (35 per cent). - TODAY
