Hi all, My car's starter motor was changed in 2011 to a brand new unit. However, it gave me problems today and I was advised to repair it. My trusted workshop quoted me an approximate figure of $200-$300 for re-conditioning. Does anyone know a direct source where I can get it re-conditioned at a cheaper price instead? I am amazed at why a starter motor would fail so frequently. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just received the renewal notice from Aviva. Due to good driving habit and accident free, I am awarded the Safe Driver Discount. Sad news is, the premium will increase about 25% to $750 (last year was $570). Doesn't seem to be logical at all....

It is commonly prescribed as every 10,000km or 6 months which ever come first. If the mileage is low like around 9000km a year, is it a must to change motor oil every 6 months or can do that every 9 months instead with no problem?

Dear fellow MCF forum users, I am considering to spray my white Honda Vezel's bonnet at CS Ong Motor (AMK Auotpoint #04-01). I heard that they will use original paint code for my White Orchid Pearl and most probably it will be OEM I think. Can anyone kindly feedback on their paint quality and if their workmanship is good? Hopping to get back original factory paint condition after spray painting. Thank you. :)

The average premium collected for motor insurance dipped slightly last year, even as the sector saw a 17.3 per cent increase in underwriting profit to $59.1 million. At its annual results briefing on Tuesday, the General Insurance Association (GIA) said the average motor premium collected last year was $1,250, down from $1,280 in 2012. The association attributed the slight dip to more insurers entering the marketplace, and said this trend is likely to continue. As a whole, the motor insurance sector collected $1.22 billion in gross premiums, a 2 per cent drop from 2012. Said GIA president AK Cher: "The GIA will continue to work with our various stakeholders to ensure that motor claims are effectively managed and premiums continue to stabilise." Today i notice only one of the fans are working when down to the workshop to check. mechanic say one of the fan motor spoiled and ask me to change 2 motors as the other one will spoiled soon.i told him to just changed the one that is spoiled . was quoted 180 for a aftermarket motor. strange the other one not spoil ask me change also. while changing it they also removed the radiator pipe connect to the engine. after changing, they top up abit of toyota premixed coolant into the radiator and reserve tank . i saw the radiator and tank was filled to the brim. after 1 hrs drive back home due to traffic jam. i pop the bonnet to check on the fans if they are working. I noticed the radiator reserve tank was empty!!! i wanted to check my radiator but the engine was still hot and dangerous to open . so i decided tomorrow morning when it is cold i will check my radiator. 1st question : can i top up my reserve tank with tap water? 2nd question: i wonder how come the radiator was full and the mechanic top up abit of premised coolant but when i reached home the reserve tank empty. any advice bros

Today, went to for a regular maintenance. Mechanic engineer told me that my Radiator A/C motor doesn't work, while the Radiator Fan motor is still working. He suggest me to change both because he foresee the other one may fail soon as well. Any suggestion here? For brake pad and brake disk rotor, Is it recommended to change at the same time? I changed the pad, but not the rotor today.

Introduction Almost all car motors work on the principle of a four-stroke combustion sequence. The sequence is intake, compression, ignition and release. All these strokes happen one after another to create power that moves the car. The parts needed to make this work are a piston, intake and outtake valves, a spark plug and a rod that connects to the crankshaft so the energy created can move the car. Most car motors need at least four cylinders to generate enough power to move the car at an acceptable rate of speed, and some cars have six, eight, 10 or even 12 cylinders. Intake At the beginning of the engine's process of generating power, the piston lowers to the bottom of the cylinder in the motor where it is housed, and a mixture of fuel and air is injected into the cylinder. This mixture is mostly air, since only a small amount of fuel is needed to generate the power needed to move the car. Almost all cars manufactured today use a fuel injector that controls the mixture of fuel and air using sensors and a computer. Compression Next, the piston moves up and there is a compression phase where the space for the fuel and the air mixture is decreased by the movement of the piston head toward the top of the cylinder. The intensity of the explosion depends on the amount of pressure in this space, so the air flow out of the cylinder is prevented by a seal placed on the top of the cylinder. Ignition The object that ignites the mixture of fuel and air is the spark plug. The spark plug is placed at the top of the piston's cycle in the cylinder, and it generates a spark to ignite the mixture. The spark must be timed correctly with the apex of the piston's motion, or the engine will not function at its optimum level, since the explosion sends the piston down toward the bottom of the cylinder and moves the crankshaft, which propels the car forward. Release At the finish of the downward stroke of the piston, there is an opening provided by an exhaust valve that exudes the waste gas created by the ignition of the fuel and air. After the gas leaves the piston cylinder, it is sent to the catalytic converter, which reduces the amount of pollutants before it makes the final exit from the tailpipe.

Sky-high certificate of entitlement (COE) prices for commercial vehicles have become a worry for businesses, motor traders and the authorities. Premiums for vans, trucks and buses have been setting record after record in recent months. Now at $76,001, it has more than doubled its price since 2011 - chalking the biggest rise among all COE categories in the two years. The motor industry attributes the climb to three factors. First, there has been a construction boom that is driving demand for heavy vehicles such as concrete carriers and dump trucks. According to Mr Ron Lim, general manager of Nissan agent Tan Chong Motor, heavy vehicles now make up more than 50 per cent of commercial vehicle sales - up from the usual 20 per cent. Second, motor dealers are clearing existing stock ahead of a new emission standard that kicks in on Jan 1. Third, speculators may be hoarding COEs in the hope of turning a profit by reselling them to motor dealers stuck with stock as the new year draws nearer. Said Mr Lim: "If there is speculation, the Government should step in quickly to address the situation. Or consider a three- to six-month extension to the emission deadline. This should quell all speculative activities." The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it is hard to detect speculative activities. But it added that there are deterrents in place, such as a shorter three-month validity period for commercial COEs, half that of car certificates. Still, an LTA spokesman said it is looking at ways to improve the system, including putting light and heavy commercial vehicles in separate categories. Buyers of the latter are better able to tolerate high COE prices since heavy vehicles are far costlier. Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew told Parliament in March that the Government "will study carefully" if buyers of "light goods vehicles should pay the same COE premium as heavy and very heavy goods vehicles". Small and medium-sized businesses hope something will be done soon. Association of Small and Medium Enterprises president Chan Chong Beng said that the issue of high vehicle costs has overtaken labour shortage as the top concern raised by members. "For many small businesses, a vehicle is a must... And because of the new emission standard, prices will continue to rise next year, and that's very, very scary." Vehicle cost will account for a bigger cost component for businesses, Mr Chan added. "Many, like hawkers, will find it hard to pass it on to consumers." He said having separate COE categories for light and heavy vehicles would be "a good solution". Ms Ivy Tao, 54, who runs a fleet of buses ferrying workers, said she has no choice but to delay replacing her older vehicles. "COEs are high, fuel prices are high. We don't feel secure any more." LTA said businesses can consider extending their expiring COEs - by paying a prevailing quota premium - by five years, which they can do twice now since a restriction was lifted in February. Previously, these COEs could either be extended by five or 10 years. Owners who chose the former had to scrap their vehicles at the end of their extension. Since the policy change, LTA said about 96 per cent of commercial COE renewals have been for five years, up from 57.
