  10. How to controlmotor insurance despite the fact that I have not made any insurance claim for the past 20 years or so but my insurance premium just keeps getting higher and higher http://tankinlian.blogspot.com/ Three years ago, the General Insurance Association, representing the general insurance companies, announced several measures under the the Motor Claims Framework, as an attempt to control claims. I felt at that time that the measures were not practical and did not address the root of the problem. The regulator gave its support for the framework. The insurance leaders proclaimed that the measures would be effective in controlling the fraudulent claims and lower the insurance premiums. It was a pipe dream. The measures actually caused the claims to escalate badly. The premium rates increased by 30% during the next two years. There is a big difference between declaration of intent and producing the actual results. Two years later, the Consumer Association (CASE) formed a joint task force with the insurance association. They approached the problem more holistically. The task force was lead by the president of CASE who was supposed to have the political clout. The joint task force identified the problems and recommended the remedial actions. This time round, it appeared that the measures would be more effective. I read a news report recently, quoting the president of CASE, that seemed to hint of slow progress in stopping the escalation of claims. Are the measures recommended by the joint task force ineffective? Over the years, we hear of countless cases of fraudulent motor claims involving aggravated damages, inflated repair bills, and claims for non-existent injuries. Complaints about fraud were not acted by the police. The insurance companies were supposed to deal with the fraud by rejecting the claims, but they need evidence to justify their rejection. With time, the insurance companies found that it was easier to pay off the fraudulent claims rather than to incur the expense of investigating these claims. Fraud has to be controlled by legislation and enforcement. It cannot be handled by expensive litigation through the courts. The parties that benefited from this unsatisfactory state of affairs are the lawyers, who have the opportunity to earn large fees from litigation work. Someone pointed out that a few members of our parliament or their immediate family members are involved in law firms. Could this be a reason for their reluctance to address this issue of public interest? In the absence of effective action, the consumers have to pay the price through higher insurance premuims. 11. 1. Booked my car in Jan 2010 during Borneo Motor CNY sale under the classic non gaurantee COE package 2. Price was heavily discounted by $6K as part of the CNY special 3. At the point of booking, I was told by the SE, the promotion has been very successful and all the cars were sold out. New shipment will take 3 months to arrive, I accepted it. 4. At the point of booking, Was advised by SE don't need to waste $1000 more on gauranteed COE package. Borneo has never fail to secure COE 5. Since Jan to Mar there have been 6 biddings, 2 biddings per month, Borneo Motors have NEVER attempt to submit a bid for any of the past 5 bidding exercises 6. Each time I call the SE to question them, why they didn't bid for me, the reason was Borneo is a large player and they must try to space out the COE bidding according to car shipment schedule otherwise COE will shoot up sky high. This is a strategy. SE said Borneo won't bid so early because my car is not here yet. 7. Subsequently SE said Borneo has the right to decide when to bid, whether to bid, what price to bid as per contract 8. They took my deposit and then did nothing to secure the COE for the past 5 biddings 9. Today 24 Mar, they put in a bid at $26K and was out bid. They did not make revision to the bid. 10. Prices have already gone up since the point of purchase in Jan 11. Past 5 biddings, COE was at around $20K they choose not to bid and waited until the final last bidding then s--t hit the fan. 12. What can I do? Complaint to CASE, which is probably useless anyway? My point is, had I not booked a car with them, I could have bought another car in Jan/Feb when prices were still lower compared to the present price. However they took my deposit, locked me into a 3mths or 6 bids contract and sat on it, I now ended up without a car and have to pay a higher price to purchase another car because prices have since moved upward SE said I'm not the only one. They've many customers in the same boat. Anyone out there in the same situation?

  13. Ten men and six women, aged between 20 and 65 years, will be hauled to Court for making fraudulent motor vehicle injury claims against motor vehicle insurance companies. The Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) received information from a motor vehicle insurance company in 2009 about suspected fraudulent personal injuries claims made against the motor insurer for road traffic related accidents. Arising from the CAD investigation and the cooperation of the insurance companies, the 16 suspects will be charged in Court on 25 June 2010 . The suspects will be charged for the offence of Cheating under Sec 420 of the Penal Code Cap 224. The charges of Cheating relate to allegations that the suspects had conspired to cheat the insurers by engaging law firms to initiate personal injuries proceedings against the insurers, in order to deceive the insurers into believing that the suspects were passengers in motor vehicles which were involved in motor accidents and that they had sustained injuries due to the accidents. Three of the 16 suspects will also be charged for Giving False Information to a Public Servant under Sec 182 of the Penal Code Cap 224. The three had allegedly given false information to the police about the motor accidents. Anyone convicted for Cheating faces imprisonment which may extend to 10 years and shall also be liable to a fine . Anyone convicted for Giving False Information to a Public Servant faces imprisonment which may extend to one year or with fine of up to $5,000, or with both. Director of the Commercial Affairs Department, Mr. Ong Hian Sun lauded his officers for their efforts in solving the cases. He added,
  14. Hi, I am in the process of sourcing my own motor insurance. I got a few quotes and I need to select one of them. So far the quotations are on the higher side because I am a new driver and taking up comprehensive coverage on a sporty car. A few insurers suggested option with higher excess ($2K, $5K, etc) for lower premiums. However I am not sure of the implications of having a high excess... for example scenarios like... 1) Other people kiss my back and I claim his insurance. 2) I kiss other people back and he claim my insurance, btw what about my own car damage? how to settle? 3) Both cars hit by the side, 50-50 cases. 4) I hit an object, wall, tree, lamp post. 5) Other people kiss my car in the car park, hit-and-run cases. From my understanding, excess only applies if I make a claim on my own insurance. And I heard that most people actually would not claim their own insurance even if they are having the lowest excess because they do not want to lose their NCD. Considering that I am a new driver and would like to build up my NCD... please advice... thanks...
  15. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_535412.html MOTORIST here has won a two-year-long fight against what appears to be a fraudulent accident claim. It has taken the dogged determination of Mr Henry Phua, 61, to expose those involved in an attempt to pin the blame for a fender bender on him and to file insurance claims of over $14,000 against him. The police yesterday confirmed that investigations have been completed, and that three men will soon face criminal charges for cheating and giving false information in connection with the case. more details here http://www.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/Story...421-136607.html

  18. The Brackley based team used a motor home usually seen in the DTM paddocks in Spain, while the new structure was being put together for the first time in the Principality. The three-storey structure resembles a glass-fronted office building and can be seen on the team's official Twitter site. German reports say the motor home has been made at a cost of less than 2 million euros, compared with the EUR15m cost of Red Bull's Energy Station. While Mercedes and Red Bull's motor homes were already in Monaco, the first motor home to arrive from Spain on Monday morning was Renault's. Reportedly, the Enstone based team bought the motor home operated last year by the departed Toyota. McLaren's so-called Brand Centre takes longer to disassemble, and as of late on Monday it had not arrived in Monaco. Source: GMM

  20. Mazda was granted a new U.S. patent this week for the design of an offset wheel-mounted motor for electric and hybrid vehicles. In previous wheel/hub motor configurations, the motor has typically been mounted concentric with the wheel. The essence of the patent is that the motor is offset from the wheel axis, with a gearset installed to provide drive torque to the hub. Usually, a hub motor consumes most of the space inside the wheel, limiting the possible mounting locations for the suspension links and compromising ride and handling. In theory, Mazda's new arrangement provides more room in the wheel and flexibility for the suspension geometry. However, the gearset hardware at the wheel will increase unsprung mass and degrade the ride and handling accordingly. There is another possible benefit of this type of installation, however. It provides Mazda with the flexibility to do either a through-the-road hybrid, by having motors on one axle and mechanical drive at the other end, or a power-split hybrid. By offsetting the motor, drive from an engine could still come in through the hub and the gearset could be used for torque blending. Whether this is actually better than the traditional power-split hybrid used by Toyota and Ford is debatable. Finally, there could be a simpler explanation: The real motivator for this patent might be to create a hybrid system that doesn't conflict with patents held by numerous other automakers. Thanks for the tip, Charlie! [source: Free Patents Online]

  22. TOKYO - Japan's Mazda Motor will recall nearly 90,000 passenger cars domestically and in China due to an oil hose defect, the company said Thursday. The automaker, which is part owned by US giant Ford, will start recalling 35,181 units in Japan and some 54,000 in China of the Mazda 3, known as the Axela in Japan, its most popular model. Mazda said the cars, produced from January 2006 to March 2009, have been recalled because an oil hose and a radiator shroud panel have been placed too close together and may be damaged by friction when travelling on bumpy terrain, leading to potential leaks. "The company has received two cases of complaints due to the problem, both in China," said a Mazda spokesman who asked not to be named. "No accident because of it has been reported." The Mazda 3 compact car is widely sold in Japan, China and Europe, said the spokesman, who added that no decision had yet been taken whether the recall will affect other regions such as the European market. The affected model is not available in the United States, the spokesman added. Mazda Motor Corp., which vies with Mitsubishi for the rank of Japan's number four automaker, generated a net profit of 4.4 billion yen (S$64.68 million) in the third quarter, reversing a net loss of 600 million yen a year earlier. Its compatriot, Toyota, has been bedevilled by a series of safety issues, having recalled more than eight million cars worldwide since late 2009 over accelerator and brake defects. On Thursday, Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, suspended worldwide sales of its Lexus GX 460 sport utility vehicle due to a rollover risk at high-speed, and said it would conduct safety tests on all its SUVs.
  23. I've been observing the above for many years of different makes and models....and one of the best sounding one for a bread and butter brand is Mitsubishi Galant's V6 ( Model E54 circa 1993 - 1996 ). Yes there are other as good or better sounding ones...but those are for cars that's many times more expensive...What's your take ?
