  1. Set to be launched at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show, Lexus has released a series of photos of the 2014 Lexus IS sports sedan showing the car's exterior and interior styling. As expected, the third generation Lexus IS exterior lines follow closely to that of the LF-CC Concept, featuring a prominent spindle grille and distinctive daylight running LED. At the back, the car sports a dual exhaust system and a pair of taillights that extends to the C pillar. Lexus has not released any official information regarding the third generation IS's drivetrains. However, the IS 250 and IS 350 are expected to be powered by the 2.5-litre and 3.5-litre V6 borrowed from its bigger brother, the GS. These engines will be mated to an eight speed automatic transmission. Toyota's premium division commented that the new IS's increased width and longer wheelbase offers significantly more comfort for the rear passengers while improving luggage capacity at the same time. The car pictured here is the F Sport trim variant.
  2. After much anticipation and speculation, the 2014 Mercedes E 63 AMG has finally show its face in an official photo alongside with its lesser brethrens that include the sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible variants. The hottest version of the E-Class range is expected to be powered by the existing 5.5-litre V8 twin-turbo which is good for 518bhp and 699Nm of torque. A performance package is available which pumps up the engine to 550bhp and 799Nm of torque. The E 63 AMG will be presented at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show. A statement from Mercedes reads, "Not only will we introduce the E-Class Saloon, Estate, Coupe and Cabriolet, but also the E 63 AMG model, now available in a 4MATIC version and, of course, the new four-door coupe, the CLA." 4Matic is the name of an AWD four-wheel drive system developed and used by Mercedes-Benz. Like the regular E-Class saloon, the E 63 AMG has a re-designed single headlamp unit. However, it sports a more aggressive front bumper that houses huge air intakes on both sides.
  3. Hyundai has released a teaser image of the HCD-14 concept prior to its world premiere at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show. From the image, the concept adopts a four-door coupe design, which is the "in" thing now. Hyundai commented that the HCD-14 concept will give the automotive world a glimpse into future Hyundai premium vehicle design, advanced 3-D gesture-based technology controls, and spirited driving dynamics. John Krafcik, president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, twitted that the HCD-14 concept is Genesis-related. The second generation Genesis sedan was recently spotted testing in Germany in heavy camouflage. The HCD-14 concept is believed to be a precursor to the luxury Korean saloon's replacement. 4. Recently, the term 'material changes' has been used frequently in the war of words between political parties in Singapore. In this blog post, 'material changes' is taken quite literally as Rolls-Royce offers a choice of three new materials for the flying lady hood ornament. The flying lady - also known as the Spirit of Ecstasy - was designed by English sculptor Charles Robinson Sykes (1875 - 1950). According to wikipedia, the story behind it is apparently a secret love between John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, (second Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and editor of The Car Illustrated magazine from 1902) and his secretary and model for the emblem - Eleanor Velasco Thornton. The most interesting choice among the three choices is the illuminated polycarbonate flying lady. It looks identical to the one seen on the 101EX-concept, a prototype that was presented at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. The other two choices are the gold-plated flying lady and a solid sterling silver version. Polycarbonate is a durable material with high impact-resistance and low scratch-resistance. Hence, a hard coating is applied to polycarbonate exterior automotive components. Unlike most thermoplastics, polycarbonate can undergo large plastic deformations without cracking or breaking. If a buyer does not see the need to cough out extra money for these special ornaments, they can always stick to the original stainless steel version.
  5. The sixth generation Quattroporte has yet to make its world premiere but it already have to start fending off rivals. Recently, Autocar UK pits the latest luxury saloon from Italy against the Jaguar XJ, thanks to Maserati which allowed the motoring press to review their newest model. The all new Maserati Quattroporte will be making its global debut at the upcoming 2013 Detroit Motor Show. In this group test, the Quattroporte is powered by the top-of-the-range 3.8-litre V8 twin-turbocharged with 523bhp. Its opponent's specifications are no less impressive. The XJ is equipped with a 503bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8 motor. It is ranked 'Best in Class' by Autocar UK. This review is set to be a clash of the titans. Can the new comer overcome the formidable super cat? Read on to find out.
  6. Following the release of the facelifted E-Class saloon, Mercedes has unveiled the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet facelift ahead of their world premiere at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show. The front fascia of both models is slightly different from the saloon version. They get a pair of more aerodynamic head lights with different LED pattern. In addition, the grille gets a single bar instead of two bars in the saloon. Finally, the bumper design is more aggressive and has a larger air intake. The engine lineup is borrowed from the saloon and they come standard with the ECO auto start/stop system. The 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet will be powered by range of gasoline engines from 181bhp (E200) to 402bhp (E500). On the diesel side, the E200 CDI gets a 2.1-litre turbodiesel with 134bhp followed by the E220 CDI with 168bhp. The E250 CDI has the same engine but tuned for 201bhp. Gearbox options include a 6-speed manual and the 7G-TRONIC PLUS auto transmission.
  7. Peugeot gave us a preview of the SUV body style of the 208 hatchback at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show. Called the Urban Crossover Concept, the production version is set to go on sale in Europe and Asia in the growing market for small SUV-styled cars such as the Nissan Juke. Now, photos of the production model, which is called the 2008, have been circulating on the internet. The styling of the 2008 stays close to the concept version. The dimensions of the Peugeot 2008 is expected to be similar to the concept, which measures 4.14m long by 1.74m wide. The uniquely styled headlights and C-shaped chroming around the fog lamps are nice touches at the front. Engine specifications are not available at the moment but it would be safe to assume that it will share the same range of diesel and petrol engines with the 208. The range-topper should be powered by the familiar 154bhp 1.6-litre THP motor that is propelling practically every single Peugeot model. The French SUV will make its world premiere at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.
  8. Look out BMW 3 Series. Details on the 2014 C-Class is starting to emerge. Mercedes-Benz insiders claim that little or nothing will be carried over from the existing C-class and it will be completely re-engineered with the aim of attracting younger buyers. The new C-class will be the first model to use Mercedes-Benz's new MRA (modular rear-wheel drive architecture) platform. Due to the light weight chassis, the new car is said to weigh less despite growing to a size of 4.7m long. The existing MacPherson strut suspension will be replaced by a double wishbone layout at the front while the back will get a significantly updated multi-link setup. Engine-wise, there will be a range of 4-cylinder and V6 petrol engines with an entry-level 2.0-litre turbo with 184bhp right up to a 330bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo. The current 2.1-litre diesel will be offered in four states of tune, spanning 120bhp to 220bhp. The new C-class will be equipped with a six-speed manual or an updated version of the current seven-speed automatic gearbox, depending on the engine. A new nine-speed automatic transmission is undergoing development and could make it for the face lift in 2017. Four body styles are planned for the new C-class. They include the saloon and estate, which will be launched at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, and a more individually styled coupe as well as a cabriolet version for 2015 launch. All body styles will be 'AMG-ed' and receive a new turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine from the Mercedes tuning specialist. Photo Credit: automotoring.blogspot.sg
  9. The 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon is just around the corner. It will be held at the Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex in Chiba from 11 January 2013 to 13 January 2013. Many Japanese auto firms and aftermarket companies will display their wares or projects at the show and Honda has announced its line-up for the upcoming auto show. Modulo, Honda's aftermarket products division has a couple of cars that will be presented at the show. Firstly, it is the S2000 Modulo Climax. It is practically an S2000 which was given a new exterior styling and interior parts. Next up is Honda's latest Kei car model, the N-One. It also receives Modulo's styling treatment, both interior and exterior. Mugen, another aftermarket and tuning firm closely associated with Honda, will also display several of their cars. First up is the Honda CR-Z Mugen RZ. On top of the sporty looking exterior styling, the hybrid hatchback receives a supercharger which delivers around 174bhp which includes the supplemental 20bhp from the electric motor. The car also receives adjustable suspension, 17 inch forged wheels and larger front brakes. The car comes in only one body colour which Mugen calls Azure Blue Metallic and only 300 units will be made commercially. Mugen has also developed a couple of "Mugen treated" Honda N-Ones. The Mugen N-One did not receive any engine modifications, only exterior styling modifications and Mugen badged interior parts. The car comes in either red or white body colour. Honda will also display two cars from the Super GT racing series and they are the HSV-010 GT and the Mugen CRZ-GT. The Mugen CR-Z GT racing car won the 2012 Formula Nippon team championship under the Docomo Dandelion Racing team.
  10. Alfa Romeo has raised consumer's expectations for its upcoming 4C coupe. In the latest teaser for the mid-engined car, it states "BEHOLD, THE CAR TO END ALL CARS IS NIGH". The new model is previewed by the 4C Concept that was presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The production version will derive its styling cues from the 4C concept and will likely be propelled by the 1750 TBi engine currently found in the Giulietta QV. The turbocharged lump produces 232bhp with 340Nm of torque. This is enough to send the Giulietta QV from zero to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds. In the sleeker and lighter 4C, the century sprint timing is expected to be much better. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch transmission. The new 4C will be making its debut at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show. Often referred to as the successor to the 8C Competizione, let's hope that the new model can walk the talk. Note: The photos shown in this blog are the 4C concept
  11. Nissan's luxury division, Infiniti, has confirmed that a compact hatchback model is under development and will hit the market in 2015. The model will be the production version of the Etherea concept unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The new premium hatchback will be based on Mercedes-Benz's MFA platform that underpins the latest A-Class and B-Class. Engine details are limited at the moment but the car is believed to be offered with the same hybrid power train featured in the concept version. It may also borrow the existing range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines from the A-Class. For readers' information, Daimler (Mercedes) and Renault-Nissan signed a multi-billion dollar tie-up in April 2010 to co-develop vehicle platforms, engines and components. The new model will be built at Nissan's production facility in Sunderland, UK. Investment costs will come out to be about
  12. From a list of 34 nominees, the organising committee of the European Car of the Year Award has shortlisted 8 finalists. The final list should consist of only 7 cars but two models got the same score during the voting process and hence the extra head (or rather hood) count. The final list has a good mix of Japanese, Korean, American and European brands. The winners will be announced on 4 March 2013 at the Geneva Motor Show. Below are the 8 potential winners: Peugeot 208 Mercedes A-Class Ford B-Max Subaru BRZ Renault Clio Volkswagen Golf Hyundai i30 Volvo V40 The winners of the 'European Car of The Year' award for 2010, 2011 and 2012 are the VW Polo, Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt respectively. Country of origins does not appear to play a part. Which car gets your personal vote?
  13. If you think that the global economy is on its way to recovery, think again. Cumulative car sales in the European Union (EU) from January to November 2012 have fallen to a 19-year low. It dropped 7.2 percent to 11.7 million units, the lowest figure since 1993. The decline was propelled by a 10 percent plunge in November. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association expects a full-year market contraction to about 12 million cars, the fewest cars sold in Europe since 1995. Below are the November statistics of some of the affected car makers: Brand Renault: -27.4 percent PSA Peugeot Citroen: -16 percent GM (Opel, Vauxhall, Chevrolet): -13 percent Ford: -10.2 percent VW: -2.5 percent However, BMW and Mercedes managed to buck the market trend and recorded sales growth of 0.4 percent and 1.5 percent for November respectively. Perhaps, workers in Fiat and Peugeot should start looking for job opportunities with the two German car makers as their companies have announced plans to cut 1,500 jobs each.
  14. The 2012 Thailand Motor Expo was held recently from 29th Nov 2012 to 10th December 2012. It is an event where the bike and car lovers and the related manufacturing companies come together to exhibit their products and technologies. If the 'hardware' does not interest the visitors, I am pretty sure the 'software' will. Read on to be convinced!

  16. The current generation Toyota RAV4 has been around since late 2005 and many felt that it is about time Toyota releases a new model for it. In recent months, several images of the supposedly new RAV4 were leaked onto the internet. Toyota denied and refused to comment about the leaked images but it seems that the leaked images resembled very much like the real thing which was unveiled at the recent LA Auto Show. The fourth generation Toyota RAV4 made its world debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show and the car will be made available by early next year. The new model will come in a variety of powertrains that will aid in engaging a true driving experience. One of the engines made available is a 2.5-litre four cylinder unit which produces 176bhp and 233Nm of torque. The V6 engine option previously offered will be discontinued. The standard four speed automatic transmission will be replaced with a six speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. The first and second gear ratios are optimised for urban driving. In order to keep engine revs lower at highway speeds and also enhance fuel usage, the fifth and sixth gears will be overdrives. The new RAV4 comes equipped with new technologies such as Sport Mode. These are enhancements made to suspension performance and the optimisation of the electric power steering. The spring rates and shock absorbers have been tuned to aid the vehicle's handling characteristics. The driver selectable Sport Mode also sharpens the transmission shift timing and action and also the throttle response. The electric power steering assist gives a firmer feel and better response to input. All new RAV4 comes with eight standard airbags and equipped with Toyota's various safety systems such as traction control, anti-lock braking system, enhanced vehicle stability control and smart stop technology. 17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COh9BmAUg50 This is the first official video released by Mercedes with regards to the upcoming CLA compact sports saloon. Often nicknamed as the 'baby CLS', the new model will be revealed at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show. The CLA will be riding on the German carmaker's all-new MFA platform, which is also adopted by the new generation of the A-Class and B-Class. The CLA will be powered by 1.8-litre and 2.1-litre diesel engines, as well as turbocharged petrol engines of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre capacity. Topping the lineup will be the CLA45 AMG, with a 2.0-litre turbo four cylinders that will produce around 350bhp and 406Nm of torque. All versions of the CLA will be equipped with the new 4Matic drivetrain that will provide variable torque delivery to all four wheels. The CLA will be positioned below the C-Class in Mercedes' lineup, which should make the car an 'affordable', stylish German marque.
  18. The 2014 Acura RLX concept (aka Honda Legend) made its world premiere recently at the 2012 Los Angeles Motor Show. Although the styling of the flagship model might not catch your attention, its multi-faced LED headlamps are not hard to go unnoticed. The new signature 'Jewel Eye' headlamps use a total of ten separate high-intensity LED lamp stacked in two rows with ultra-reflective optical lenses and high-gloss trim to provide a powerful illumination. There are a total of 20 beams of light emitting from the headlamps. They give the RLX a distinctive and bright-eyed look in both day and night. The RLX Concept is powered by an all-new 3.5-litre V6 direct-injected VTEC engine mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT). The motor generates more than 370bhp and promises to deliver V8 acceleration with four cylinder fuel economy. The concept also features the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD
  19. Hyundai has unveiled the Veloster C3 Roll Top Concept at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, adding to the unique design of the Korean coupe. According to the Hyundai, C3 stands for "Convertible 3-door". The concept features a automatically retracting canvas-top in place of the center section of the roof and a rear tailgate which flips down like a printer's tray. Hyundai has also designed a latch at the rear compartment for securing a bicycle with the tailgate opened. On the new concept, Hyundai commented, "In convertible mode with the top rolled back, the C3 is a free spirit for driving along the Pacific Coast Highway. Roll the top forward, open the tailgate, fold the rear seats and the C3 goes into recreation mode - perfect for surfing, biking or kayaking." The C3 concept has a blackened front grille, orange-coloured side mirrors, 18-inch alloy rims in different shades for the front and back wheels. The front leather seats come with red trimmings at the supportive areas. "We were inspired by the proverb 'A rolling stone gathers no moss", explained Chris Chapman, chief designer of Hyundai Design North America. "The Veloster C3 Roll Top concept offers the 'no strings attached' freedom of a roll top convertible and customizable utility that fits an everyday to a play day dual lifestyle."

    Ford

Perhaps to prove that their 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine is truly a compact unit, Ford chose to transport it in a hand-carry cabin luggage on its way from Detroit to the Los Angeles Airport. The winner of the 2012 'International Engine of The Year' award claims to occupy only the footprint of an A4 size paper when it was launched. From the photo, only the empty engine block is carried and hence it should not be too heavy. Fortunately, the car engine passed the transportation security screening without any problem. The engine is on its way for the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. Ford is showing the engine to the US market in preparation for its launch in the 2014 model year Ford Fiesta. The tiny turbocharged 1.0-litre engine is the epitome of downsizing, churning out 125bhp with 200Nm of torque on overboost. In addition to the face-lifted Fiesta, the engine is also powering the Focus hatchback and the 4.8m all-new Ford Mondeo. Ford proves that great things do come in small packages!
  21. [extract] When the 9th generation Honda Civic went on sale in 2011, the design was not well-received by the automotive community. In fact, many believed that it was a step backwards from the previous generation
  22. Just a few months back, Mercedes Benz announced that they will release an AMG version of the A-Class. Known as the A 45 AMG, the car is said to rival other performance models such as the RS3 and the M135i and the car will get a rather powerful engine. The A45 AMG will be fitted with the M133 engine which is a turbocharged 2.0-litre, four cylinder unit. It makes around 350bhp and 400Nm of torque. The engine is fitted with a single Borg Warner twin scroll turbocharger which redlines at 6,300rpm. That sounds pretty impressive and it would be great if Mercedes Benz offers the same engine in other models. And that is exactly what the German auto giant is going to do. The M133 engine will be used on a new, upcoming model which is called the CLA-Class. The CLA-Class is said to be heavily based on a recent concept known as the Style Coupe Concept (top most image). The CLA-Class will be based on a front wheel drive or an all wheel drive platform and it is sized just below the C-Class. The transmission that will be used on the A 45 AMG is a new seven speed dual clutch gearbox and it is possible that it will be used on the CLA-Class. Obviously, the M133 engine will only be fitted to the highest grade of the CLA-Class. The base model will likely get a turbocharged four cylinder unit that makes around 210bhp. The A 45 AMG is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year and the CLA will be introduced shortly after that. Mercedes Benz intends to offer both models for sale within a few moths after their debut.

  24. The fifth generation Maserati Quattroporte has been around since 2004. Fortunately, the arrival of the sixth generation Italian sports saloon should be dawning upon us. Over the past one year, prototypes of the new Quattroporte have been spotted in heavy camouflage. Now, for the first time, the upcoming model has been photographed without the bulky plastic claddings. Measuring 5,097mm long, 1,895mm wide and standing 1,438mm tall, Maserati
