I have seen the interest in Home Theatre chat increase, so I figured why not share about it, and also make a thread where everyone can share on this too. So I put together a few thoughts: (TLDR) The home theatre (HT) system has been a mainstay of every man's home since music began. We used to have just a stereo pair, then we moved all the way to multi-channel systems, with separates, cables galore, Blue Ray players and other gear as we tried to recreate the home theatre at home. Whilst the desire by the missus for less clutter has tried to move things away from big black boxes back to near tiny ones, Covid has intensified the rebirth of the home theatre system, even if it is only in the form of the soundbar. Being cooped up at home for months during the height of the epidemic has made us aware of how woefully small the TV we own is, and there was a huge surge in upgrades of the TV, along with cable cutting and subscription to various streaming platforms. However, after buying that fancy TV, with the latest apps and 4k resolution, you think you're in TV heaven, enjoying some high quality images. But when you begin streaming movies that indicate they are master in Atmos, somehow the sound is flat. Or worse, even for free to air TV broadcasts, the dialogue is not very audible and the TV speakers don't even go that loud. Well, with the advent of wafer thin TV sets, there is no more room to put proper speakers inside. Don't let those specs of "20W per channel with subwoofer" fool you. Some TVs even say they are Atmos equipped. Remember, to get a full home theatre surround experience, you need sound to come from the front, the sides and for Atmos, from the top, or at least have sound bounce off surfaces so they sound like they are not just radiating from the front. Many home owners who live in smaller settings and are not audiophiles, don't want the clutter of running speaker cables all over, and rue to have large speaker boxes flanking their TVs. Even an external subwoofer is something that seems out of place in their idea of a well decorated room. Cue the soundbar. If you believe the marketing, a soundbar will be able to give you that home theatre experience, sans the clutter and cables, and even sound good in music. Let's first get the caveats out of way... Soundbars can range in price from a couple of hundred dollars to a few thousand. Some utilise internal subwoofers whilst others require you to buy one. Others also sell separate surround speakers, which are called wireless speakers. A few are really wireless, as they run on built in batteries, whilst others still need a plug in power source. Now even the best top of the line ones won't give you the same immersion as a full fledge surround sound system for the same money. What you gain in aesthetics, you lose in immersion. Furthermore, it is very important to check the actual number of channels in your soundbar. The basic ones also carry "Atmos" logos on the box, but they may only contain two channels and make use of psycho-acoustics to simulate surround. So it's just trickery and not real surround. Even those with extra channels for the sides, and Atmos channels rely on reflections, which means ideally you need to be seated in a centre of a rectangle room, with reflective solid walls on all sides and also on top. How many of us use or sit in such a room? The soundbars are also necessarily slim with a thin profile to fit under the wall or table top TV sets, so they do not block the screen. This has an impact on the size and quality of the drivers used and consequently, the sound quality. Music playback, especially for those entry level ones are pretty nasty. The other thing is money. Take a certain amount of money that you are willing to pay. The returns on sound quality is proportionately reduced accordingly to the number of channels you are buying. Take a stereo set, with only two speakers, all the money goes towards the amplification, the drivers and cabling for only two speakers. Once you add more channels, the amount spent on developing each additional channel will then impact and reduce what they can spend on each channel, thereby reducing the sound quality. So my advice for those with a limited budget is to assess what's important: having a Atmos sticker and a more disappointing experience or get something without that and just improve dialogue and music. In my opinion, the bottom line for getting external speakers is to improve the viewing and listening experience. After all, the sound bar is meant for improving dialogue first and foremost, then aid in some enhancement of the movie listening experience, and sound reasonable in music. I'm realistic with what soundbars can recreate. To really create a surround experience, choose a soundbar that has real side surround speakers. As for Atmos, you will be need upfiring speakers, and if your side / rear surrounds are also equipped with them, the surround immersion will be even better. So if you are limited to a single bar solution, the surround effect will be largely determined by how flat and reflective your ceiling is. The higher end ones will also be equipped with a calibration tool of sorts and this helps to determine how far the soundbar and any other speakers are located from your sitting position. The other feature that I look out for is a subwoofer. Here you have some choices. The ideal one is that you have a dedicated external subwoofer, that will partner with the soundbar. Some brands offer the choice of buying the soundbar with or without the sub, and I highly recommend the former if a good movie experience is what you are after. Built in subwoofers are usually quite weaker. Others use some port trickery to accentuate the bass, but few soundbars reach below 60 Hz without a good sub. If the soundbar offers an external sub-out, that's an interesting option too. What are the various levels of soundbars? - well even a single speaker can act as a sound bar, if clearer or louder diction is all you require - two speakers allows stereo output, and some make sure of these to generate a pseudo-surround by adding time delays - three speakers is the beginning of a real soundbar. This allows clearer dialogue from a dedicated centre channel - 5 channels gives you side surround and either reflections from side walls or a real side surround speaker can really up the surround experience - most soundbars won't get you 7 ear level surround speakers, so 7 channels usually means 5 plus a pair of upfiring Atmos speaker - if there are nine channels, the soundbar either goes for more upfiring Atmos channels or occasionally 7 ear level channel To these channels one can add a sub to make the sound more robust and the tactile feel is very important for movies Even a two channel stereo system can double up as a soundbar, but the wider the gap between the speakers, the more obvious the gap if you do not sit in the centre. The centre speaker is vital for the best movie experience. Now placement of these speakers is vital. The surround channels need to be at least in line with the sitting position or slightly behind it. Check the manual for the specific model for what the manufacturer suggests Then if the soundbar allows levels adjustment, that will be great. Having a distance level adjustment is also important Some have their own calibration tools, and this really helps, and others just hope for the best. The higher end ones usually feature this. Finally some features that may allow you get a better listening experience: - DTS decoding. This feature is becoming more rare these days, and not all brands offer it - extra HDMI inputs. If you want your soundbar to be the centre of your home entertainment system, this is a good thing to have - eARC. This should be standard in all 2023 soundbars, but it isn't. However it isn't so important if you only have two channels / drivers and your entry level soundbar isn't capable of high resolution audio. - streaming options are always welcome, but accessing them is what differentiates the user experience and this boils down to the app as well as the remote - physical remote. As strange as it sounds, some high end models are no longer offered with this and that makes the assumption you only use the eARC input and your TV is the main controller. - input buttons. I like to be able to program certain streaming channels so I can access them with a press of a single button and that's not always available. In fact it is pretty rare. Kudos to Bose and Denon on this front. Now for the nitty gritty.. I like to have attention to detail and these details make or break a purchase. Make sure you measure the height of the bar and check that it sits properly under your TV especially if the TV is sitting on your table top. Check the width too in case it's too wide to fit between the legs of your TV. How is the wifi quality. Do some homework. Certain models experience frequent dropouts in the subwoofer and surround connection to the main soundbar. How easy is the setup and does daily use require many presses of the buttons on the soundbar app. Are there physical buttons for adjustments on the bar? There is no need to buy the same brand as your TV or Blu Ray player. Some offer a few more buttons the TV remote that control the playback, that's it. Sony is one of the few brands that has a centre speaker mode, that allows you to use the TV as a centre speaker for it's A9 model, but that's because it does not come with a centre speaker. If music matters, bring some of your favorite tracks to audition. Or even bring a USB drive of your favorite movie scene. But a caveat is that not all soundbars have a USB port and you may have to rely on the one on the TV. Will you require an entire home ecosystem of sound? Then choose a brand such as Sonos, Bose or Denon which have some system that allows you to listen to music from one source wherever you place a speaker. Do pay attention to the weight of the bar, and see if your console is strong enough, or if you wall mount it, how strong is the feature wall and does it stick out a lot? What is the version of Bluetooth and does it support APTX for better sound. I like Airplay too as it fits into my ecosystem. I prefer a physical remote and one that uses AA or AAA batteries. My philosophy is to get a good one so you do not get buyer's remorse and end up being unhappy or dissatisfied with the sound from the word go. Be realistic with how good the immersion is, especially if you do not sit in an ideal room.

Hi All, Anyone got feedback on Video/Movie playback on the AVH-8750BT? After almost a year of installation, here's the user experience. 1. If you plug in iPhone Car Play. You cannot view the movie in the HU, only to the external or back seat monitors. Safety reasons. 2. Can play almost all formats as long as H.264. *.avi, *.mp4 or *.mkv. Except HD files >1GB will be slow to load. 3. USB2 reader ONLY reads FAT32. Please remember to format it FAT32, not NTFS. FAT32 is more stable. 64GB usb will get 59GB. But more stable, less error. 4. Annoyance #1: Movie player does not remember and resume the last played movie position. Player keeps going back to the first movie on the USB. You will have to spend time going back to your last view movie manually and scroll to the last watched point. (important feature) 5. #2: Not subtitles capability (not essential but good to have) Anyone got updates for the firmware or software for this? Cheers.

Just to complete the collection (after songs, TV shows and publications), started a thread for favourite old movies. To get the ball rolling, this is one of the first movies I remember having seen near the time of its release in 1977 (or at most a couple of years after it): Quite mature themes - and at the time, I didn't understand the subtext of the Moon landing hoax conspiracy theories, the black helo references, etc. In fact, I don't think I understood too much of anything - I must've been about 5 at most, but I remember there was a snake-eating scene that burned itself into my memory.

I'm a movie buff, and I love horror movies so I'm gonna strike off the movies in this list one by one. I've already watched some of them anyway. Enjoy!! 1. The Exorcist The Exorcist is known as “one of the scariest films of all time.” While many people don’t debate that, what they do debate is it’s watchability. Many people have said that they chose to sit through it once for curiosity, but what they saw was so terrifying they never wanted to see it again. Maybe it was the sight of a little girl masturbating with a crucifix or her head spinning a full 360 degrees. Well, it also might have been the spider crawl Regan did down the stairs. You could make a list all day about the reasons why you’d never watch this classic horror film more than once. 2. The Woman This was a film I must recently viewed through the almighty streaming Netflix service and was ultimately astounded by it. The Woman is about a seemingly “normal” family who takes in the last remaining member of a cannibalistic tribe. It doesn’t take long for you see that the family might be more barbaric than the prisoner. The excessive gore (usually revolving around cannibalism) and a sexual assault performed by a child will ensure that you never want to see this film more than once. Don’t get me wrong, this film makes a serious statement about mysoginistic behavior and the people we deem “normal” in everyday society. It’s worth a watch… once. 3. The Human Centipede This movie might win the award for the tackiest film of the year and it really isn’t necessary to watch one time. The film follows the exploits of a sadistic scientist who sows 3 victims together mouth to anus in order to create one digestive track. The first time one of the victims has a BM you’ll know there’s really no reason to watch this film once let alone ever again. 4. Hostel Torture porn king director Eli Roth made a huge splash in the indie circuit with this outrageously gory and torture ridden horror film about three Americans traveling through Europe. These empty headed too-old-to-be-frat-boys get caught up in a terrible game of human hunting and the events that follow will never leave you once you see it. The torture scenes are drawn out to prolong the gruesome scenes, but there is absolutely no pay off to any of them so there is really no reason to ever see this unnecessarily violent movie ever again. 5. The Last House on The Left The original film made in the 1970’s is considered a cult classic however, its source of fame is pretty disturbing. The remake and the original both feature a long and graphic rape scene of two girls out in the woods. By the time you see the rapists get much deserved justice in the brutalist of ways (the remake having way more brutality than the original film) you will feel both content and disgusted with yourself about why you were so happy to witness the brutal torture of another human being, even if they are a rapist! It’s enough to make you say “Once is enough.” 6. The Girl Next Door The girl next door is a horrific story about a woman who sexually, physically and mentally tortures a young girl who is staying at her residence. Another film entitled An American Crime stayed close to the actual, terrible event. Yes, some of the things in the film did happen to a poor young girl when she was staying with a psychopath while her parents ran off and joined the circus (literally). If seeing a girl being sexually assaulted with a coke bottle and watching children torture another another child isn’t enough to stop you from watching a film twice, nothing will. 7. Maniac This one is a relatively new horror film about a young man ( played by Elajah Wood who deliveres a career pinnacle performance) who is way more obsessed with store mannequins than he should be. Oh yeah, and he’s a serial killer with some serious social issues. What makes this serial killer film so unique is that the audience witnesses the entire film through the eyes of the killer. You only see his face in mirrors or shiny surfaces. Witnessing the gruesome murders (most of which contain scalping afterwards) in 1st person view will make this film impossible not to stop watching. But, that dirty feeling you will have when you turn the movie off, will make you want to never watch it again. 8. Insidious This movie follows the strange ( and damn creepy) events of a family haunted by a supernatural being that seems to follow the father wherever he goes. Sounds pretty typical right? Not hardly. The jump scares are plenty, there’s one of the most frightening demons you’ve ever seen on film and lets not even talk about that creepy dancing shadow. You’ll think twice about scaring yourself so bad again by watching this film twice.. If you ever do. 9. The Orphanage This is one of the most depressing films I’ve ever seen, but it is still covered in a gothic like beauty. At times though it’s a little too gothic. It contains extremely haunting images of children with special needs (one in particular who walks around with a sack over his head). There are plenty of jump scares to keep you interested. The ending is so crazy emotional you’ll feel like your heart has been ripped out of your chest. You’ll never want to feel that way twice, trust me! 10. Excision Excision is the outrageous and gag inducing tale of a girl obsessed with blood and being a surgeon. There are so many moments (a few containing menstrual blood) that will make you want to instantly turn off this deranged film, but you’ll be too drawn to look away. You’ll have to see it until the very end and when you do be prepared for a swift, sharp kick to the gut! Between the punches and the yucks, you’ll never want to see this unique take on a psychopath in the making again! 11. Cannibal Holocaust Why this disgusting horror film with very little substance is considered a classic at all is questioned by many. It’s considered to be the first found footage film made, but some of its scenes are barely watchable. The movie details the last days of a film crew’s trip to the Amazon and their blood drenched experience with the natives. This film was banned in many countries and the director faced tons of criticism for killing real animals on film. Completely unnecessary right? Even the director said he wishes he had never made the movie! This movie is just all around sucking and if you stayed away from it consider yourself lucky as the grandiose violence means absolutely nothing. If you watched it out of curiosity, then I bet you won’t go there again! 12. Teeth This dark comedy is a real pleasure for any woman to watch one time. This movie is based on the classic legend about the woman with teeth in her vagina. It’s something a woman has fantasized about at least once and a nightmare every man hopes to never ever come across. If you’re a man it is 100% obvious why you’ll never want to see this film again (ouch). If you’re a woman, the terror of seeing another woman find out she has this“disorder” only needs to be witnessed once. 13. Funny Games If you get through this movie the first time, you’ll start to question your own sanity for watching this mind screwing film. Funny games chronicle the disturbing events of two young men who torture and kill an entire family. The film doesn’t use a lot of shock-and-awe violence, but plays out its murderous sequences as brutally real. If that doesn’t make you never want to watch it again, wait until the main characters speaks to you directly and fills you deep down with a big helping of guilt! 14. Hostel 2 While this film is much more enjoyable to watch than the original Hostel, the highly gruesome ( and imaginative) kill scenes make this movie only good for one viewing unless you really enjoy watching people be gutted like a fish obvious reason. The second movie in the Hostel franchise combines two intriguing storylines: that of captured women and the men who paid a huge amount of money to kill them. The ending will have you cheering and the mysogenstic attitude of many horror films is flipped on its head in this one, but I doubt you’ll ever take this movie for a spin again. 15. The Mist One of my favorite films based on a Stephen King novel, is about townsfolk who take refuge in a grocery store after a strange mist befalls their town bringing frightening “plagues” with it. This movie has one of the most brilliant (and controversial) endings of all time. It’s so explosive that many watchers of this film have told me they never want to see the movie again. Although I’ve been watching it a 100 times more. 16. 8mm 8mm is only good for one watch because of its obvious taboo and beyond frightening subject matter: the existence of a snuff film. A detective goes through a brutal investigation trying to find out if a film a woman turned in is really a snuff film or just staged to look that way. The movie is an excellent thriller, but digs down so deep into the grimy underworld you’ll have to take a shower when you’re done. It will also leave you questioning if the myth of the snuff film is more than just a myth. 17. A Serbian Film Just hearing about this film turned me and many other horror watchers off from ever watching it once let alone twice. This movie fits in as much depravity as possible by following the storyline of a man who agrees to make a porn film only to find out they’re the most depraved porn films on earth. The reason why you’ll never want to watch this movie twice if you ever get through it once: infant rape. Enough said.. The film dramatizes the failed United States Navy SEALs mission Operation Red Wings, in which a four-man SEAL reconnaissance and surveillance team was tasked to track Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.
