  1. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_694341.html Anti-competitive 'Almost all car dealers insist buyers take up motor loans and insurance from companies they have tied up with.' MR LEONG SZE HIAN: 'I bought a new car recently and was told by the manufacturer's sole agent that I must take up its motor insurance policy with an insurance company. This was despite the fact that I could get a cheaper net motor insurance premium and a lower claims excess from another insurance company. This is clearly anti-competitive behaviour, which I understand is prevalent in the motor industry here. Thus, is it any wonder that motor insurance premiums have been going up in recent years, when consumers are forced to take up more expensive policies with less benefits in the event of a claim? My understanding is that almost all car dealers insist buyers take up motor loans and insurance from companies they have tied up with. What this means is that even if the buyer can obtain a car loan with better terms, he cannot do so.'
  2. okay, according to some bros & sis in mcf, being on the road we should live and let live and not try to video and forward every "minor" traffic offence to tp. so in this case what should i do?
  3. This causes traffic congestions. Other disadvantages: 1. the kids will not learn how to be independent eg using public transport etc 2. the kiids will only see the world in aircon comfort from dad's car's window... no chance to see how heartland pple use public transport 3. the idea of 'bonding' between parents and kids in the car is guaranteed: kids just nap in the car or listen to MP3, play HP games etc 4. nagging by parents in the car deprive the kids peace before reaching school 5. parents have to wake up extra early to go school before starting work 6. worst still: tai tai buys extra car to fetch kids (depriving others who need car/COE more urgently) 7. too many cars outside school / pedestrian crossing:- dangerous for school kids who walk 8. maid got one extra car to wash 9. (pls add) Dont know about you, my bro and I took buses from Farrer Park area to school in Siglap when we were only in P4...... nowadays kids or too sheltered and soft Suggest schools ban cars within 200m of main gate. TP fine cars with school kids above p4 during morning rush hours. If kids need fetching due to health reasons, ok.
  4. U nia bo?? [bigcry] Women are better at parking than men: Study Women are better than men when it comes to parking, a recent survey found, reversing the existing idea that men have better spatial awareness. The report by a car parking operator in the United Kingdom studied the parking habits of 450 drivers through CCTV footage and surveyed 2,000 more to find that women drivers received 13.5 out of 20 for 'parking coefficiency,' compared with 12.3 for their male counterparts. The study looked into technique, accuracy and time taken to park. The study revealed that women drivers are also better at finding parking spaces than men. Perhaps women drivers deserve more credit than they are used to getting,' said Mr Neil Beeson, a professional driving instructor who devised the experiment.
  5. What a difference eight months makes Print Email Thursday, 19 January 2012 Singapore Democrats In May 2011 candidate Lee Hsien Loong stood before the crowd and apologised to Singapore for the Government's poor performamce. He acknowledged the poor handling of the Mas Selamat escape, the floods, housing and public transport. He was contrite and pledged to do better. What a difference eight months and one swearing-in ceremony makes. In Parliament this week a feisty Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong defended the high ministerial salaries, saying:

  7. my paper Friday, Dec 23, 2011 A Singapore civil servant appeared in court yesterday on 455 charges of cheating the Government of a total of more than $600,000, the authorities and a media report said. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a statement that clerical officer Liew Chee Meng was alleged to have forged documents to approve the purchase of gift vouchers for his personal benefit between 2007 and early this year. Subsequent investigations led to the seizure of almost $475,000 worth of goods from the accused, the MHA said. "A civilian clerical officer from the Ministry of Home Affairs...was charged in court today with forgery, cheating, criminal breach of trust and conversion of proceeds of crime," it said. "The offences relate to acts allegedly committed in the course of his employment with the ministry. The total amount involved is $617,087." The MHA said Liew's actions were uncovered in January after an internal audit, following a corruption case involving a senior civil servant with a penchant for Italian supercars. In that case, Koh Seah Wee, formerly a deputy director of information technology at the Singapore Land Authority, was sentenced last month to 22 years in jail for cheating the Government of more than $12 million. 9. even undertaker take bribe Ex-undertaker charged with corruption Posted: 01 December 2011 1623 hrs SINGAPORE: A former undertaker was charged in court on Thursday with two counts of corruption for allegedly accepting bribes to reveal addresses of deceased persons. Victor Louis De Foe, 65, allegedly accepted S$50 from another funeral services company on two occasions in May this year for the information. He is accused of taking the bribes in Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National University Hospital. His case will be mentioned again on December 15. If convicted, he could be jailed up to five years and/or fined a maximum of S$100,000 or both.
  10. Geezz if a Masai warrior family from Africa or a Eskimo family from eastern Siberia come stay next to me I must go find out what they diet is, their culture and what they do during freetime (hunt lions/seals?). These days really tough being Singaporeans... On top of having to accommodate these FTs unwillingly, one must also tolerate their vocalness plus to learn their culture some more... Pai tan... Later must go downstairs to my new Chengdu neighbour to find out about them and why they like to talk so loud and smoke so many ciggies a day and most puzzling of all, having many of their compatriots coming over their place on Sundays to have a good time and making our small neighborhood a noisy market... But this writter is quite contradicting also when he mentioned foreigners forming their own enclaves and does not mix around with locals. So where does he stand? 11. This is a TCSS for weekend thread. After watching so many TV serials and movies, I suspect that there are some skills all actors will learn in acting school. 1) The cliffhanger: Guy A falls off a cliff or tall building. Guy B leaps forward and grabs A's hand. Both hold on by the finger tips. 2) French kiss: Lead actor and actress lock lips after dramatic finale 3) Fainting: Usually the actress will get some shocking news and faint 4) Death speech: Hero / Villian will give speech (and sometimes cough blood) before up-lorry Anymore I forgot?

  13. As GIC chairman also can right? need to be president meh?? is our current fella doing any of these??? i think not Dr Tony Tan says he can help govt understand economic situation better By Hetty Musfirah | Posted: 04 August 2011 2223 hrs Photos1 of 1 Dr Tony Tan VideoDr Tony Tan says he can help govt understand economic situation betterhttp://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...145067/1/.html#http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...145067/1/.html#6Share SINGAPORE: Presidential hopeful Dr Tony Tan has said Singapore could be affected by a "perfect storm" that is brewing in the global economy. The former deputy chairman of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) said should he be elected, he will be able to contribute his knowledge and experience to help the government understand the situation better. Dr Tan was speaking on the sidelines of an event organised by the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday, a day after the Writ of Election was issued. He was invited to launch a book titled "Beyond the Myth - Indian Business Communities in Singapore". Dr Tan said he wants to meet as many Singaporeans as possible to understand their concerns - something he has been actively doing since he announced his intention to run for Presidency. He said people are concerned about the economy and he expects global uncertainties to create a perfect storm of problems which could eventually affect Singapore. Dr Tan said: "I think there is the possibility (in) the coming months of having the perfect storm of problems which will affect the global economy, and eventually affect Asia and Singapore. "Our Singapore dollar against the US (dollar) is now 1.2. Many people are predicting it will go even lower. It is difficult for our companies to cope if this appreciation is rapid because you can raise productivity, raise skills training but you can't do it so quickly - all of these take time." Dr Tan said that given the economic uncertainties, it is highly likely the next President will be involved in decisions about Singapore's economic future. He added: "With my background in these areas, and with the knowledge which I have of the financial market, and the global economy, I believe that I will be able to make the contribution to and help the government and the ministers ... to understand the situation better because I worked in these fields for the last 20 years. "I have intimate knowledge of all these areas. And it's really because, if you like, I see the dark clouds over the horizon coming on ... I feel that I was very comfortable in SPH and GIC - there was no reason for me to leave this job which I love. "But with these dark clouds coming over the horizon, I felt that 'how can I just stand aside and just be comfortable in my own sphere when all these problems will affect Singapore'. "I know I have the experience and the knowledge which could help the government, in order to cover all these problems, of course, within the limits of what the President can do. "The President is not a power centre, the President cannot have executive powers, but the President has knowledge and experience and he can share these with the government officials. "And I know them every well - all the ministers - and maybe they will listen to me because I worked in this field for many years." Dr Tan said he intends to reach out to more Singaporeans in the coming days, including meeting them at hawker centres.
  14. ...if you go along the logic of this reader even though the ruling party has dispense with it already. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_691779.html There's something to be said for standing on ceremony I DISAGREE with Associate Professor Hussin Mutalib's suggestion ('Let's not stand on ceremony for MPs'; July 9). What I found somewhat discomforting was his suggestions to review or revamp practices such as 'requiring residents to gather much earlier than the scheduled arrival of the MP, and requiring them to stand when the MP arrives'. Should we dispense with the basic values of respect for people who could influence the quality of our lives? As an elected official, an MP has been entrusted by his electorate to manage their interests and concerns, and deserves a modicum of decorum and respect. While his duty is to serve, it must be recognised that he is a leader. Imagine the prime minister attending a community event in his capacity as an MP, and walking in when the audience members are not all present, or when they loiter and chat, oblivious to his arrival. In treating politicians more like servants, we may well get it wrong on principle about etiquette and good manners. By studying human association in his own community, Confucius concluded that an essential principle of social relations is that of reciprocity. This means 'persons tend to act in relation to others as others act in relation to them'. Jolly Wee

Recently, I was driving along the NS highway At the point after yong peng, I could see a crashed 40 footer lorry at the centre divider Thinking nothing much of it, I sped pass at 150km/h There were some debris on the road and I swerved a little to avoid them Unknowing to me, the crashed truck has been leaking diesal No prizes for guessing what happen next My vehicle skidded out of control and crashed in to the divider My face turned green consequently Thanks to morden car features like stability control and ABS, no one was injured Although the general message is to pass an accident vehicle so as not to cause a traffic jam It certainly pays to pass with some caution

Kee relates the incident: "The man in the video was caught on CCTV vandalising my car at Far East Shopping Centre. "This is the kind of person that shames all Singaporeans. "He did this in retaliation for when I honked at him for jaywalking earlier. I was turning right into the road between Liat Towers and Far East Shopping Centre. "In front of me was another car. The traffic light showed 'no crossing'. Everyone else was waiting for it to turn green before crossing except for this man. He decided to cross between me and the car in front, so I honked at him. "The police are currently investigating the case. If you know who this person is please let us know. If you know him, have him surrender or face jail. A handsome reward awaits anyone who comes forward with information that leads to this individual's arrest. "Truly an ugly Singaporean."
