  1. Hi All Its my turn to do the Open Net cabling. My place has the LAN cabling built into the house and terminates near the Starhub distribution box and power point. I was told by Starhub that I can connect the ISP box at this setup. The Open Net contractor says I have to situate the fibre box near the TV, but this will mean ugly trunking since my TVs are only in the bedrooms. Also it doesn't make sense since most homes now have multiple TVs. 1) Can someone help identify my LAN terminal box and how do I connect them to a router or LAN switch? 2) Is it feasible to hook up the complete fibre setup at this remote position and have the LAN points or wireless router serve the whole house (as per what I have read in the Open Net website)? 3) Who or what type of company does this type of hookup work? Thanks for all advice!
  2. I despair after hearing about the furore about COE prices appearing on papers, internet and TV. This is not rocket science, and after many years of trial and error, no one has got it right. The politicians in charge are very worried since the poor showing in the previous elections, and the turmoil brewing on the widening rich-poor gap. As a developed country, there is a need to address the rich-poor gap, human rights, equality, environmental wellness, traffic conditions, and public transportation. The system of COE, ARF, Road Tax, does nothing but line the treasury coffers, hence certain political party got the nickname Pay and Pay. The impending carbon emission tax rebate/charge is a welcomed change however, there is no need for such a complex rule to implement. Vehicles that are modified after sales, or poorly maintained will still produce more carbon than it should. Different driving styles and road conditions will also change the carbon emission by a big margin. We often see many drivers leaving their engines on while idle, how are you going to charge that? There are simple and effective solutions which do not cost a bomb to implement and will also satisfy the lower income group, vehicle sales market, environmental concerns, improved public transport and traffic. 1) Drop the COE - they are not effective. 2) Drop the ARF - no difference from the COE, just another tax that is not effective. 3) Drop the Road Tax - it is not a fair representation of road usage, carbon emissions. 1) Increase fuel prices - you use, you pay simple. No need for satellite tracking, ERP gantries. If the vehicle has high emissions, it will consume the relative fuel. If you can't afford to pay for fuel, you won't drive much. 2) Increase Parking charges - you use, you pay simple. Existing infrastructure, no need to change anything. If you cannot afford parking, you will not drive to the place. If the carpark is at it's maximum capacity, they can command higher premiums. If people cannot afford to park, they would not buy a car. 3) Cars are sold on OMV only, lower income group can afford cars. They have the freedom to use it but of course there's a premium to pay to use it. They can find cheaper parking lots with less demand. 4) Fuel tax, ERP, and parking fees will give the same amount to the treasury, there is no impact. 5) Use taxed funds to support public transport to reduce cost of operation and improve efficiency, not just adding monies to the reserve. It's public transport, the governing body of the public should contribute, not let it be run by "private operators" who are only concerned of profits. These results in a fair vehicle system, everyone has a fair chance to purchase vehicles on their market price, less usage, less payment, leading to less traffic, less emissions. Those who can only afford public transportation will enjoy cheaper and more efficient system.
  3. Hi, Just want to check with you guys here, currently I am driving a 1.5year old odyssey. Bought it before the COE went skyrocketed. Hence now if I were to dispose the car on the 2nd hand market I can get some cash back on top of outstanding value. I was tempted by the offer by C&C for the new C180/C200. After calculating with pumping in the money after I sold my ody off, it should be more or less the same for installments monthly just that there will be no 'positive' returns if I will to dispose my car at any time. I am wondering if its a smart move to change from MPV 2.4 to a sedan 1.6/1.8. Generally the space is not much a consideration, but not sure if the power loss will be expected from a slightly lower cc car. Yes I do agree my heart sways to the finishing of the merc but logically I should hold onto the odyssey right as value wise its still positive value in some sense unless I were to drive till the end of lifespan of the car. So should I consider the change? Many thanks for the advise. P.S. Nothing to do with the badge thing. Just looking for comparism of value for money worth.

  5. Recently so many reports on FT. Here's another research report, the previous one I posted was deleted for dunno what reason. ANyway, here's the report by IPS: Why more migrants needed in S'pore By Imelda Saad | Posted: 03 May 2012 0935 hrs SINGAPORE: Another study has been released in support of Singapore's need to attract new migrants to slow down the impact of an ageing and dwindling population. Released by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), the report is the first to take into account the country's non-resident population. This includes those on work permits, long-term social visit passes and foreign students. In its report, the institute sets out three scenarios. One, where the proportion of foreigners remains at 25 per cent (or one in four) of the total population. Two, where this proportion drops to 20 per cent (or one in five). And three, where the proportion is raised to 33 per cent (or one in three). For all scenarios, it is assumed that Singapore will take in 30,000 new citizens or Permanent Residents every year, and the country's Total Fertility Rate remains at 1.24 The report states that a higher non-resident population will mean a larger total population, from the current 5 million now to 6.8 million in 2030, if the proportion of foreigners in the population is raised to 33 per cent. And while the average population will still get older, a higher proportion of non-residents will slow this process down. The same is said for the support ration between a working adult and an elderly. While the ratio will still decline, with more foreigners in the midst, the impact will be somewhat mitigated. Assuming the country's Total Fertility Rate remains at 1.24 and it brings in 30,000 new citizens or PRs yearly with non-residents, the support ratio now for every one elderly aged 65 and above to a working adult is 1:10.3. In about 20 years, this will be halved at 1:5.1, if foreigners make up 33 per cent of the population. If Singapore takes in no immigrants, there will be only about two working adults supporting each elderly person, by then. So, even with more foreigners in the mix, there will be fewer Singaporeans supporting the elderly. But the paper shows that the problem is exacerbated without taking in migrants. With or without foreigners, the labour force will be hit. Even with the bumped-up crop of foreigners, the report shows the growth in total labour force will dip from the average 3.6 per cent annual growth which Singapore has been enjoying since the 70s. With the current proportion of one in four foreigners in the midst, the labour force will grow by 1.04 per cent over the next 10 years. Raising the proportion to one in three will see the labour force grow to 2.47 per cent annually, over the same period. The IPS report comes just a week after a similar paper was issued by the National Population and Talent Division. Both papers present population projections based on certain assumption and are not meant to be forecasts or predictions. Together, the reports will form the basis of a national discussion on populations issues that will culminate in a White Paper to be released by the end of the year. The White Paper on Population will set out issues important to Singaporeans and map out strategies for a sustainable population. This will cover areas such as housing, transport and land use. - CNA/wk http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1198946/1/.html
  6. Hi guys, need some advice as this is an area I know little about. My main gripe is road noise from the tyres, and the OEM A349 Aspecs seem to be getting louder (or maybe its because i've been driving the punto more, and it became quieter after I changed the P4's to K415's). Anyway, I'm trying to figure out what way I can most effectively lower the road noise levels. Do note that in their weight reduction scheme for the DE model Mz2's and Demios, Mazda has minimised the SPing done, and if you lift up the spare wheel cover, you'll realise that there is only some minimal spray/paint on sound deadener. In no particular order, this is what I'm planning on doing. Basically I'm targeting a cumulative reduction in tyre noise volume. 1) Change tyres to either the Hankook K415's or Kumho KH17's. Any comments on either tyre in comparison to each other?? 2) Get someone to use the spray on/paint on deadener in my wheel arches. Extra coat in the rears as more noise is coming from them. I've read that it helps. 3) Cover the entire boot floor and spare wheel well in sound absorbing materials. Should I do the same for the back of the rear seats and/or the underside of the parcel shelf??? 4) Soundproof the firewall on the engine side. Sound absorbing mats at the lower sections extending to a little under the car, and sound reflecting sheets at the upper 1/3rd My assumption with the firewall and boot soundproofing is that both the engine bay and boot act as resonators to increase the road noise. Oh one last thing, When the bass from my music gets too deep, my front door cards seems to vibrate against the inner frame. Should I just use 1.5/2mm insulation foam to line the frame or should I just SP my front doors??? I've heard that you get tighter bass with the latter.
  7. Assuming as it is. That is, CPI remains at exactly like this for the rest of your life. Yes, comfortable is subjective, driving a BnB maybe comfortable to some, but not to others. This I know, so it's up to your own definition. Not trying to judge or anything. I'm just curious about the level of expectations for the people in this forum. For me.....I think $120K should be quite reasonable. You don't have to reveal what you chose if you don't want to.

Added: I wonder what most of the 'comfortable' will mean. I don't think having a stable of cars with the likes of Ferarris and Lambos are considered comfortable. Those are closer to opulent, no?
  9. Hi guys i think u guys are aware of the high cost of owning a car in Singapore. Not only the high COE prices. Road tax, ERP, Parking Fees, Petrol, and many many more. So i would like to ask. How much would be an advisable income for one to be able to purchase and sustain a relatively small car E.g suzuki Swift in singapore, in current situation?

  11. Hello all, Was hoping anyone can advice on the email address for Mazda corporate HQ or contact. My dad's Mazda 2 under went routine servicing with the agent 3 days ago. While on the road, the car suddenly stalled and water gushed out from under bonnet. After the car cooled, we have noticed that the cooler cap is missing. The car was unable to start thereafter, and had been towed back to the agent. We were quoted 5k for a complete engine overhaul. Obviously, we we highlighted that servicing had just been done hence how could the car gotten into such a state out of sudden. Unfortunately, the agent is unable to give a good explanation and shrug off as wear and tear :( Anyone has such experience and what actions been taken? It is really unfair that the responsibility is thrown back to us while we had diligently sent for servicing etc. If anyone has the email address for Madza public relation etc, do feel free to share too as I would like to write and share with them on my experience and the service (the lack of it actually) provided by it's agent. Thanks!

  13. guys.. wanna seek your advice.. lagi better if u commercial lawyer one.. i'm a starhub subscriber for tv, voice and internet since years back. initial contract was 2yrs, then renewed again, and finally late last year renewed again, verbally. here's how it went: the cso called to ask me if i wanted to renew.. with the info he provided over the phone, i agreed, hence the contract was renewed verbally. here's the issue: when the guy called, he didn't tell me the free voice subscription is going to end in july. i agreed based on my understanding that everything was supposed to be the same as previously offered. called the cso today.. he claimed they have recording of my verbal agreement, and is considered a binding contract.. early termination charges will be slapped on me, even though this was a misrepresentation. here's the question.. is this true? there a case for me to terminate this verbal contract? go complain to case? knn all the while my clients sign contracts with me in black/white, 2 copies at least for keeping and on every page. this starfug only need voice taped down and stored in their database and i don't even have anything. ridiculous! is there such a thing outside?

  15. DRIFTING http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6rsa7v_sss...feature=related RACING CARS For home-made track, the cars' speeds got to be set lower coz the track is much shorter/narrower. You see, i am a fan of remote control racing on and off in the past.... tried different 'cars' and engines (gas/electric). Most of my 'cars' COE expired liao... but unlike real cars, new ones are still affordable (especially the MiniZs i am eyeing now). This type is small but realistic (controls/steering and even bodyshapes.... its 1:27 scale, palm size, but the body details are almost as good as the die-cast display type) The shops have their indoor tracks, about $5 you can race the whole day!! But i have this sudden urge to build a 'portable/foldable' track at home and use a design i like (mimicking our F1 street circuit or Sepang etc). My living+dining space is not very big, but good enough if i put a few tables/seats i have to the side and may even run the track over them.... Spent today's morning using masking tapes to mark out the layout, so far so good. But I am not sure what type of carpet or textured/friction paint to use on the track made of plywood boards modules?? Any bros have some suggestions on the whole project, especially the choice of carpet / paints to give the tyres max grips? I know this is quite a niche project, but it will be my Xmas/NY project (i will pass the bills to my wife, she no need to buy me present, just pay) btw, I am eyeing a Lambor or Ferrari as my race car..... will go 'showroom' soon. thank you in advance... (i m also checking with MiniZ forums)
  16. Helping my friend's mother to post. Yesterday at approx 10pm, she was driving her Toyota Vios around New World Centre, a Black Mitsubishi ram to the rear of the Vios, reverse then sped off. She only manage to catch a glimpse of the number plate but couldn't recall the front and rear alphabets. The number is 1292. The Vios is of a bad shape and need to be towed. Hope any of you kind hearted bros able to CSI the number out. Again thanks for the help.
  17. Hi All, I was involved in a chain collision a couple of months back. I was the middle car out of 3 cars involved. The situation was that the front car braked suddenly and I managed to brake and stop in time. However, the last car rear ended my car and the impact caused my car to surge forward and hit the car in front. As I have installed an in-car camera, I have video evidence to prove that I kept my distance during the drive and managed to brake and stop completely without hitting the front car before the impact from the car behind. Now for the problem. I am due to renew my insurance soon. The insurance company agrees that I am not at fault and my NCD is protected. However, as the last car and mine are insured with the same company, they have no one to claim third party from. At such, my premium doubled because they decided to load me on this. In addition, I also received the lawyer letter from the front car for third party with a claim amount is $x. Apparently, my insurance company decided that my claim amount should be 5x instead. Due to the huge outstanding claim figure that they state, I am unable to get quotes from other insurance companies. In short, I am held hostage by them. Are there any forumers out there who has the same bad experience as me? Is there any recourse I can take for this? Or is it going to be a case of LLST? Appreciate thoughts and advise. Thanks for reading my wall of text.
  18. Yes...imagine if u were given a chance to buy only one car....without needing to bid for coe...what's that elusive car you've been eyeing all this while ?
  19. Hi all, I'm using a packard bell compesseo GPS. The charger to be used in the car was spoilt, the mini USB port connect from the cable snapped. Can any kind souls direct me where to get a replacement unit? It is a in car charger to be plugged into the cigarette lighter socket with mini USB out to charge the GPS. Secondly, any shop to recommend for me to wire the new charger internally? My current one is hidden somewhere within the dashboard but I cannot remember the exact shop for this wiring service.
