  1. [extract] After the launch of the Skoda Rapid, The Czech car maker is ready to reveal the next generation Octavia sedan. At the Moscow Motor Show, Volkswagen Group officials have confirmed that the all new Octavia will be revealed this November before it goes on sale in the beginning of 2013. It will be the fourth VW Group model to be underpinned by its new modular MQB platform following the Audi A3, Seat Leon and upcoming VW Golf Mk7. Due to the new MQB underpinnings, the new Octavia is expected to be lighter than its predecessor although it will grow to around 4.8 meters long. This is to distinguish the Octavia from the new Rapid sedan in Skoda
  2. With all the hype on the internet regarding the all-new 2013 VW Golf, Volkswagen had a media presentation in Germany to highlight the important features of the brand's vital new model. Unfortunately, we are still unable to have a good gauge of how the new car will look like after the presentation as only the body structure was showed. But judging from the body structure, one can guess that the MK 7 will generally retain the shape of its predecessor. Despite being larger and roomier than the outgoing model, the new Golf will shed about 100kg. In addition, VW says that fuel consumption and emissions are reduced by up to 23%. Hence, let

  9. Jaguar has announced it will introduce all-wheel drive system on the Jaguar XJ and XF equipped with the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 engine that delivers 335bhp and 450Nm of torque. The engine is mated to an 8-speed ZF transmission. The AWD sedans have revised suspension and steering systems and Jaguar claims that they deliver the same involving handling as their rear-drive counterparts. In dry conditions, the all-wheel drive system operates a rear bias except during step off when torque is pre-loaded to the front for a smoother start. The front drives shafts run through the sump to lower the centre of gravity. The AWD system functions hand-in-hand with Jaguar Drive Control. This allows the driver to select
  10. [extract] Honda has released details of the production version of the ninth generation Accord in both four-door sedan and two-door coupe body styles for the US market. Looking at history, this is the version that will most likely end up in Singapore as well. 11. As automakers try to achieve better fuel efficiency, they are looking for ways to reduce overall vehicle weight. General Motors has taken what could be a game changing decision by investing in NanoSteel, a leader in nano-structured steel materials design. The new steel alloy technology offers unique material characteristics that are not currently available today that will reduce vehicle weight and increase fuel economy. David Paratore, President and CEO of NanoSteel, said that the new material is stronger yet easier to form than conventional automotive steel. Additionally, the new alloy can be formed using conventional steel processes and no new welding techniques or machines are needed. More importantly, NanoSteel claims huge weight-saving advantages. "We're not talking about saving grams. We're talking about saving kilograms," said Paratore. GM Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of General Motors, is hoping that the investment in the nano-structured steel material designs will have a widespread impact on the auto industry.
  12. Talk about a Formula 1 car for the road, and I get instantly reminded of the Caparo T1. I mean it was designed by F1 designers and it does, mostly look like an F1 racer. Have you ever wondered what could be the end result if an F1 car got mashed together with a F-22 fighter jet? Well the Spanish have the answer. Meet the Advanced Design Tramontana, a car that weighs around, 1224kg, which feels a little heavy considering that it contains alot of carbon fiber and magnesium. Powering this road plane is 5.5-litre twin-turbo V12 sourced from Mercedes-Benz which is good for 750bhp and 1098Nm of torque. All that power moves the rear wheels through a six-speed gearbox. Now there is a newer faster version, the a.d. Tramontana XTR. The Spanish manufacturer has released a couple of renderings, besides info that the XTR will be powered by a new 5.5-litre twin-turbo V12 with 888bhp and 678 pound-feet of torque. A new "ultra-rapid competition gearbox," is rumoured to be installed as well. The mid-engined, rear-driven XTR has an enhanced appearance, and will be yours for 420,000 euros. Only a dozen units are expected to be built per year. Picture credit: Autoblog

  14. Over the past few months, there have been many spy photos of the MK7 Golf floating on the internet. Now, it seems that the wait is finally coming to an end. According to German news daily, Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, the all new Golf will make its world premiere at a special event organized at Berlin's New National Gallery of modern art on 4th September 2012. As evident from the series of spy photos, the design of the Golf VII will be an evolution of the outgoing MK6. However, behind the conservative shell lies the biggest change. The car will be sitting on the company's latest MQB platform that underpins the new Audi A3 and the recently introduced Seat Leon. For the engine lineup, the European model will utilize a range of turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines including a 1.2-litre TSI and a 1.4-litre TSI petrol equipped with VW's ACT (active cylinder management) system that shuts down cylinders two or three to improve fuel economy under certain conditions. The 1.4-litre is currently available in the new Audi A3 and generates 140bhp with 249Nm of torque. The hot 2.0-litre GTI and the range-toping 'R' AWD models will follow next year. The GTI version is rumored to produce around 260bhp. The new Golf will also debut hybrid powertrains in gasoline and diesel formats, as well as a pure-electric variant. The new VW hatchback will receive its public premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show which will run from 29 Sep to 13 Oct 2012. It will go on sale across Europe in November.

  16. A recent application filed for technological trademarks by Toyota suggests that future customers will soon enjoy nifty in-car gadgets. This application is seen as a way for the Japanese auto firm to potentially increase their appeal towards tech-savvy consumers and also at the same time, to keep up with its rivals. A total of two trademarks were filed. First, a touch sensitive dashboard known as the "Intellitouch" and lastly, a wireless charging system for mobile devices known as the "EBIN". Touch sensitive displays are nothing new. Ford has their MyFord Touch System since 2010 and Cadillac has its CUE System. Toyota might go a step further than the above mentioned automakers and build a full touch sensitive dashboard for future models. The Intellitouch system will likely be used in conjunction with similar Toyota patent filings, including one called a "Reconfigurable Tactile Control System Display", which could give drivers multiple options for dash display setup. Knobs and buttons may soon vanish entirely from the centre console area. The second trademark application details a system called "EBIN" that was described as storage containers with built in inductive battery charges for handheld electronic devices. In short, EBIN will provide drivers with a specific storage spot for their mobile electronics that will also allow for wireless charging. Toyota has not revealed when we will see these two technologies introduced and also on which models will they be featured on first. Photo credit: Net Car Show

  18. Calling it the Beltbag, Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to introduce inflatable rear seatbelt airbags on a luxury-class model, likely the next generation S Class sedan. The gas generator in the belt airbags would be triggered during severe frontal collisions only, which will then inflate the multi-layered belt strap with Velcro seams to nearly three times its normal width. The Beltbag is able to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear in a head-on collision by lessening the strain placed on the ribcage. "Mercedes-Benz is pursuing its safety initiative in the rear of vehicles with the Beltbag," comments Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rodolfo Sch
