  1. According to a latest Straits Times article, local labour union National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) aims to help low income workers upgrade their live-hood and monthly income range by providing subsidiaries of up to 90% to obtain a Class 3 or 4 driving licences. People whom obtain them can apply for better paying jobs in the transportation industry. A Class 3 licence can cost up to $2,000 yet under the new scheme, qualified and successful applicants only end up paying $200. This scheme is only for all Singaporeans and Permanent Residents whom are seeking or considering jobs at the transport and logistics industry, which is seeing a severe shortage of manpower. To qualify you must be currently earning less than $1,700, or below $1,400 per household member a month. All successful applicants will also receive a training allowance and can finish the course in a faster pace of nine months. Jobs including delivery, dispatch or bus drivers will be offered after successfully obtaining their licences. NTUC aims to place 5,000 locals or PR's in transport and logistics based jobs that pays more than $1,500 by the year 2015 and wants to attract mainly the locals and PR's in an industry largely dominated by foreign workers.
  2. Some how I suspect Prof Lim's shock-wage theory has a part to play in all these hasty follow-ups... Anyway glad these cleaners are finally getting attention from the so-called labour movement but unless it is law employers may not accept the "recommendation". And hope they keep to their word of looking into the low pay situation of other low-wage workers in other industries. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1209015/1/.html NTUC sets wage targets for cleaners By Saifulbahri Ismail | Posted: 21 June 2012 1443 hrs

  4. When Prof Lim gave his recommendation recently, it was relentlessly attacked by all parties inclduing our political leaders but csince then changes seemed to take place though not significantly. Strange isn't it? From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_805130.html Praise for Prof Lim, query for NTUC Published on May 31, 2012 KUDOS to Professor Lim Chong Yah, who sparked the debate about the need to increase wages for low-income earners ('NWC: Give built-in pay rises'; last Thursday). One must then question why the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), a union that is supposed to represent Singapore workers, did not take a more proactive approach to bargain for better wages and help improve the plight of poor Singaporean workers until Prof Lim stepped in. Furthermore, a wage of $1,050 a month, even after the proposed $50 increment, still makes Singapore a country that offers one of the lowest wages among developed nations. This is hard to accept, considering the other extreme where Singapore boasts of being one of the countries with many millionaires. The $50 increment should not be just a one-off; it should apply over the next 10 years. Unless it is mandatory, some employers will not feel the need to reward these workers more, even if they are more productive. While employers are justifiably concerned about increased business costs with higher wages, labour cost is but one of the factors, another being the spiralling cost of rentals. The Government can take the lead in adjusting commercial rent downwards, through JTC and various other landlords it has a stake in, or give more rental relief to help businesses. Other business costs like the necessary operating licences should also be scrutinised to achieve savings that can be passed on to businesses, especially the small and medium-sized enterprises. 8. A flash flood has occurred at Ang Mo Kio Central where a newly-opened NTUC FairPrice outlet seemed to be the hardest-hit. According a STOMPer, the water levels of the floods were 10cm high. In a response sent in by the supermarket chain, patrons were escorted out of the outlet before staff members cleaned up the affected areas. A spokesperson for FairPrice wrote: "At 3pm today, water had seeped into our store located at Blk 712, Ang Mo Kio Ave 6. "Our staff reacted immediately by escorting customers out to ensure their safety. "We were able to clean up the affected areas within the hour and resumed business only after ascertaining that all products have not been affected and are safe for our customers. "We are working closely with the building management and town council to ascertain the cause of the water seepage and to ensure this does not occur again." STOMPer john koo wrote:

  10. Labour chief Lim Swee Say says NTUC is moving towards a more pro-worker stance in the light of a full-employment economy. --PHOTO: BT THE NTUC is moving towards a more pro-worker stance in the light of a full-employment economy and is thinking of suggesting more measures to tighten the supply of foreign workers. The labour movement also wants to be more transparent about its internal discussions with the Government and employers so Singaporeans can appreciate the trade-offs made in positions taken on worker issues, said labour chief Lim Swee Say on Monday. 'While it is important for Singapore to be first in global competition, of growing importance is that Singaporeans come first in our local employment ...this is the best of both worlds that Singaporeans are expecting,' Mr Lim said. Mr Lim also said that the NTUC is thinking of pushing for a cap on the number of foreigners in white-collar jobs as well as to make a company's access to foreign workers conditional on it raising productivity or hiring older workers

  12. This is assuming the government of the day is still them. What if they become the main opposition after a freak election? Then it is back to the free-for-all old days? It is too pro-ruling party a heading. It should be "Why NTUC works closely with the government" But that's just me. http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_645126.html Why NTUC works closely with PAP THE mission of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and its affiliated unions is to protect and advance the interests of the workers of Singapore ('Explain role of NTUC in politics' by Mr Ang Miah Boon; last Wednesday). Having seen militant unions disrupt growth and destroy jobs in the 1950s and 1960s, NTUC believes that a constructive brand of trade unionism and tripartism remains the best way of serving our workers. Since 1961, NTUC has worked closely with the People's Action Party (PAP) Government to grow our economy and strengthen our society. Our low unemployment rate and steady increase in real wages have not happened by chance. They are the direct result of this shared effort between NTUC and PAP to enable our people to have meaningful jobs and lead a purposeful life. Labour MPs give workers a voice in Parliament and make NTUC a more effective labour movement. As labour leaders, they are responsible to the unions, members and workers at large. They express the concerns and aspirations of workers and speak up for balanced government policies that are both pro-business and pro-worker. They also work directly on measures to benefit workers, such as re-employment of older workers and back-to-work women, re-skilling of low-wage workers and upgrading of PMETs (professionals, managers, executives and technicians). As MPs, they are responsible to their voters and the public, and contribute actively to nation-building. Currently, three labour MPs lead the Government Parliamentary Committees for Manpower, Education, and Community Development, Youth and Sports, having been elected by their fellow PAP MPs to these posts. How many labour MPs we have depends on the quality of NTUC candidates. Labour MPs undergo the same stringent selection process as other PAP candidates. As NTUC nurtures promising candidates for selection by PAP, we also recruit potential PAP candidates who can contribute to the labour movement. Such a two-way approach has served our workers and union members well. On this 50th anniversary of NTUC, it is timely to recapitulate this symbiotic relationship between NTUC and PAP. Together, we are partners in nation-building. John De Payva President National Trades Union Congress Lim Swee Say Secretary-General National Trades Union Congress
