  2. This was under the old scheme, flats bought direct fm HDB can sell after 10 years. But sales were slow and to speed up collecting levy, they cut down to 5 years. ST Forum May 16, 2011 Offer discounted flats with longer resale ban periods I REFER to the letter by Mr Goh Ah King last Friday ("Offer cheaper flats with shorter leases"). Another possibility is for HDB to offer flats with a longer resale prohibition period, such as 10 or 12 years, and price such flats at a bigger discount than normal flats. This would benefit families who intend to live there for a longer term and encourage others to take a similarly longer view of their HDB flat. I believe this is worth exploring together with the shorter lease option. Alvin Tan

  7. Since Off Peak car can drive on Sat whole day, Sunday and Public Holidays, why HDB season parking holders cannot free park at other HDB parking lots on Sat. like Sundays and Public Holidays? Why double standard? Saturday is off day as Sunday. Does HDB try to discourage people visit relatives and friends on Saturday and encourage them just stay at home because they can use their season parking lot. If you agree HDB should offer free park on Sat. too. Please go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/Free-Parking...158206087549480 to voice out.

  13. News Network SKOREA - More than six out of every 10 actresses have been asked to have sex with influential figures, according to a survey released by the National Human Rights Commission yesterday. In the survey conducted by the Korean Women's Development Institute last year on 111 actresses, 60.2 percent of respondents answered that they had been asked to sleep with rich and powerful figures. Most also said that such "sponsor" relationships are quite common in the entertainment business, said the NHRC. More than 45 percent had been ordered to attend drinking parties and wait upon the participants. More than 58 percent had experienced sexual harassment and 31.5 percent were physically harassed as well, according to the survey. Some 21.5 percent were more directly forced, either by their agency or influential acquaintances, to have sex and 6.5 percent were raped. The patrons are usually wealthy businessmen, producers, directors, agency heads, broadcasting officials and politicians. The respondents were pressured to abide by the "requests" for the sake of their career, they also said. Some 48.4 percent of the respondents said that they were deprived of acting opportunities shortly after refusing. Aspiring actresses also received sex offers, though demands there was less demand to their obscurity, said the NHRC. "A detailed special law is required in order to supervise entertainment agencies and to guarantee the sexual rights of female entertainers," said an NHRC official. The KWDI's survey was the first one to be conducted on the sexual freedom of female entertainers. The issue was brought into public debate last March as actress Jang Ja-yeon committed suicide, leaving hand-written notes detailing at the sexual relationships she was forced into by her agency. The documents were released by her former manager.

  16. SURIYA Bala Kerisnan has been offered a full-season drive in the Formula BMW Pacific series for next year by Asia Racing Team. The offer came after the 16-year-old student from St. Francis Methodist School impressed Asia Racing Team manager Phillippe Descombes - even though he didn't complete the entire race. Suriya was hit in the rear by an opponent and the damage to a rear suspension arm made him lose control of the car on the first lap. But he did enough for Descombes to offer him a drive. "It was very exciting to see what Suriya did at the start of the race," said Descombes. "I didn't even expect such a performance from him, given his debut here, his lack of experience compared to the others. "We held back in the first race on Saturday (when he finished 15th out of 19 cars)and we told him to be more aggressive today and express himself, but he surprised us all with his moves." Till that accident in the 10-lap race yesterday, Suriya had overtaken three rivals from the start. The first was a spectacular overtaking move down the start-finish straight - Kimi Raikkonen or Lewis Hamilton-style - going onto the green strip close to the wall of the Pit Grandstand side to move past Fahad Algosaibi in his E-Rain Racing car. Suriya took another rival under braking with a clean overtaking move going into Turn 5, and made up one more place soon after to be as high as 14th (out of 19 cars), before he wash it and spun off. Descombes said: "Someone like him needs testing time, and physical development, because he's lagging far behind the rest. "But he has that racing instinct, and that's why I offered him this one-off drive for this weekend in Singapore. "What I've seen over the past three days has convinced me." Crash Suriya's crash took place where Nelson Piquet Jr made his deliberate crash for Renault in last year's Singapore Grand Prix. Suriya escaped unhurt though, after his car spun exiting the corner and hit the wall opposite, like Piquet Jr did last year. Suriya said: "A Team Holzer car behind me was very aggressive and it hit me from behind at the previous corner (Turn 16). "Something broke at the back, and the car just got away from me as I crashed at Turn 17. "I was so disappointed because I was fired up to have a good race after a great start." Descombes said: "A rear suspension arm broke at the back after he was hit, and that caused him to lose control." But Suriya now has a chance to take part in more races - a full season of 15 in five locations in Asia from April to November next year. He'll need cash to realise his F1 dream IF SURIYA Bala Kerisnan accepts the offer of a full-season drive, it will cost Suriya's family more money. For a full season of racing in this series (which includes the car, team support, insurance for crashes and development regime), his family has to cough up at least 180,000 euros (S$374,000). Descombes said: "A cheaper programme is available, but it depends on whether he wants the best and full package." The 35-year-old Frenchman - who has 16 years of experience in motorsport - should know. He helped developed last year's Formula BMW Pacific champion Ross Jamison over two winter-period testing programmes in late 2006 and 2007. He also helped refine 2007 Formula BMW Asia champion Jazeman Jaafar during the 2006 Formula Renault series. Formula BMW Pacific has a higher standard of racing than its Asia series, and Suriya now needs the funds to realise the first step towards a Formula One dream. A go-kart racer till recently, Suriya was invited to race in Formula Renault - another single-seater series - in China last month, where he finished 10th in his first race, and 10th again in the second race (after starting from 14th). That's how Descombes spotted him. His father - construction businessman TM Bala Kerisnan Thevar - has already forked out 40,000 euros for this weekend's race alone. This is because of the higher fees incurred at an F1 support event. That's life in the lower leagues of motorsport, where you pay to drive until you're good enough to be paid to drive (like Brazilian Felipe Nasr, a guest driver during this weekend's Formula BMW Pacific race and winner in the two races on Saturday and yesterday). That's why more support and sponsorship are needed. On his car over the weekend, Suriya had only one local sponsor - www.abiraamejewellers.com - on the side of his car. Suriya said: "My eyes have been opened to another world this weekend, after being the first Singaporean in a single-seater category here. I'm glad I created history and I hope there will be more support after this weekend."

  20. Save my house, Hollywood Desperate homeowners let in film crew to earn $3,000 a day, but risk getting nasty surprises January 20, 2009 HURTING from the current recession but love your home too much to sell it off? Some Los Angeles homeowners have found a way to earn extra cash while holding on to their houses - they called Hollywood. These enterprising homeowners have laid out the welcome mat for film crew, offering their homes as sets for movies and commercials, reported Bloomberg. Said MrJoseph Darrell, who runs Joe Darrell Location Service, which sources locations for film sets: 'We are getting a lot of calls (from homeowners). They say, 'Can you help me to bring a production to my home, because I have trouble making my payments.' But letting in film crews is not without setbacks. MsMarylin Bitner, who owns PlanA Locations, said one client 'almost had a heart attack' when he saw that his living room had been painted fluorescent yellow. But another was quite happy to have a new gate installed in front of his house, MsBitner said. He called it the 'pay-it-forward' gate. Clothing and jewellery designer Jayshree Gupta too is happy to let cameramen tramp about her 3,000-sq-ft Bevely Hills penthouse. 'I am doing it because I need money to maintain my lifestyle. A lot of my money is either gone or tied up. Right now I am hurting,' she said as crew members laid protective paper over her hardwood floor and moved in lighting and camera gear. Her home is being used for a day as a set for a TV commercial for a day. She declined to say how much she was being paid, but Mr Darrell, who landed the deal for her, said the going rate for filming work in a place like hers is US$2,000 ($3,000) to US$3,000 a day. That amount would pay half her monthly household bills and maid service. Added MsGupta: 'I am praying, praying, for more productions to come in. 'I thought it was a brilliant idea to help myself.' MsBitner told Bloomberg that she has been getting more than a dozen calls from homeowners each week, up from about two a week a year ago. She said: 'We're getting all sorts of houses. From small homes, where owners are hoping production money will save their house, to very large mansions, where owners hope to avoid having to dig into their savings or having to sell stocks.' Still, there are some perks to letting your property out for film-making. For one, income from residential filming for fewer than 15 days a year isn't subject to federal taxes, according to the Internal Revenue Service. For another, you may get to rub shoulders with a movie star. Said MsBitner: 'We've had Alec Baldwin, Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr, among many others. They are always posing with our clients' kids.' But it's not just homeowners that are trying to make their properties earn their keep. More owners of commercial buildings are also letting in film crews. But many are willing to settle for less than the US$6,500 or more a day that was previously offered, said MrDarrell. Meanwhile, one desperate homeowner, Mr Jerry Mendoza, was hard up enough to go to compromise on his integrity for more cash. He had hoped to sell his four-bedroom house in suburban Burbank, which he built in 2006, for US$1.3 million. When the tenants he rented the home to left in November, he leased it for filming. But the most he had received for a day was US$1,300, he said. So he offered his home on an Internet notice for the adult-film industry - because he had heard it paid up to US$5,000 a day. Maybe the homeowner can be part of the acting crews for the adult-firm industry :)
