A report from The Financial Times predicts that China will build more passenger cars and light commercial vehicles than Europe for the first time ever in 2013. This should not come as a surprise as European car makers such as Opel, Ford of Europe and PSA Peugeot Citroen have announced plans to cut production this year. Analysts expect China to produce a total of 19.6 million cars this year versus 18.3 million units in Europe. In 2012, China and Europe rolled out 17.8 million and 18.9 million cars respectively. However, all is not lost for Europe as its sluggish economy is showing signs of recovery. The PMI index for the 17-member Eurozone hit a nine-month high in December 2012 although the reading of 47.2 reflected an 11th month of contraction. But, if The Financial Times' estimates were accurate, about 23.8% of vehicles sold this year will be produced in China which is almost ten times higher than in year 2000. Taking into account Europe

GM Vice Chairman Stephen Grisky says that Opel is not for sale. "Opel is not for sale. GM fully stands behind Opel," said Mr Girsky in a statement recently. "Opel is a fully integrated part of GM's global footprint and vital for GM's future success in Europe. The GM-PSA alliance is fully on track." The statement comes after an Italian newspaper implied Fiat was ready to buy the loss-making brand should the alliance between GM and PSA/Peugeot Citroen fail. The publication reported that Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne is already preparing a proposal to acquire the European brand in the event that GM decides to pull out of the alliance. The first time Fiat was trying to buy over Opel was in 2009 when the company was briefly in the red. Car makers are currently going through a deplorable phase as they struggle to control increasing losses in Europe after 11 consecutive months of declining sales. GM is one of the companies that were badly hit as it lost almost US$16 billion in its European operations over the last 12 years. The GM-PSA alliance allows both the manufacturers to share vehicle platforms, components and modules. In addition, the creation of a global purchasing joint venture enables both entities to enjoy greater economy of scales when sourcing for materials. I believe Opel has a future as it has plans to revamp its engine line up over the next 12 months. The new 1.6-litre SIDI (spark ignition direct injection) ECOTEC engine has been introduced recently and production will start in late 2012. Opel, hang in there!

In one of my earlier articles, I mentioned that Opel will unveil the all-new 1.6-litre four cylinder Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) petrol engine at the upcoming Moscow International Auto Salon. According to gminsidenews.com, this new power plant will eventually be heading to North America and Chevrolet will be the main user it. The Chevrolet Malibu, Cruze and Sonic are all expected to receive the engine between 2014 and 2015. The next generation GMC Terrain is also expected to utilize the 1.6-litre turbo. I am looking forward to this version of the Cruze as it will finally have the firepower to go head on against the popular Jetta Sport. The forced-fed unit will most likely make about 180bhp with 300Nm of torque. It will also be equipped with start/stop function to enhance fuel efficiency. This engine will be GM -

Opel, the struggling European arm of General Motors Co , took a key step towards returning the brand to long-term profitability after its supervisory board voted in favor of a midterm business plan that included "massive" investments in its model range. The plan also envisages cost cuts, new models and efforts to win new export sales. "The plan approved today paves the way for a strong future for Opel. GM stands behind Opel and supports management and labor," said GM Vice Chairman Stephen Girsky in a statement. The company has previously said it is working on plans that provide guaranteed jobs for German workers until 2016 in return for postponing pay increases, and the expectation that the plant in Bochum will close after that. The company commented that it has plans to move into market segments where it has not been represented before, and expand sales in emerging markets. Opel has just announced that it will be replacing the core of its petrol and diesel engines within the next year with three brand new engine families. For the time being, Opel has revealed details on one engine family which is a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline unit with direct injection and start/stop technologies. It looks like in some places bulldozers and other machinery alike has been put aside and substituted by an extraordinary 15-year old Opel Corsa. On the next video the tuned car is working on its next demolition. Everything looks good. Equipment has been checked, rope has been checked, tyres have been warmed up and demolition can start. Opel held a launch event at their showroom last week for their new Astra Turbo, which is a car that has a neat trick up its sleeve. Now, the basic information you need to know is that the Astra Turbo is available with two turbocharged engines, a 1.4 and a 1.6. But that's not its main trump card. What is it? Read on. The clus is of course in the picture. Why would Opel want cyclists? Because, the rear bumper of the Astra Turbo hides a very nifty bicycle carrier, which slides out like a drawer should you need to carry a couple of bikes for that weekend getaway. Some may deride the seemingly pointless feature, but I personally think that it is very innovative of Opel to offer something like this. Cycling is gaining popularity now in this day and age, and I guess Opel are smart in providing an easy way for drivers to carry their bikes in a convenient way. Although, whether cyclists would actually drive a car in the first place is an issue to discuss another day. For now, let's just applaude Opel's creativity in providing something which, I would think, no one has thought of yet.

Dear Bros/Sis. Just to check if anyone knows whether changing the timing belt helps in reducing the FC cos I am currently on a 2006 combo 1.7m (approx 78XXXkm) and the FC is about 13-14km/l.... Not sure if my FC is reasonable cos I've heard from some of my friends that my FC is pretty high and I've just collected my van a month ago? Please advise... PS. I will be changing it this weekend le... Please pardon me as I am being curious.... Many thanks...

Hi members, Really keen on this machine and have test drove it. The automatic transmission cannot make it though. It's really jerky when it shifts, especially if you keep your feet on the accelerator . But the Easytronic is really cool and fun. Features are indeed comprehensive as well. My concerns: 1) Price - SGD 83K (Too high) 2) Maintenance - with digital equipment all over the car, quite worry about the servicing or replacement. Their wiper blades are proprietary as well. 3) Resale value? Will there be any? 4) Reliability Has anyone bought this car yet? Comments please. Thanks in advance.
