  10. lifted from a website Coffeeshop Chit Chat - Open letter to MP Josephine Teo From: kojakbt89 Apr-4 10:41 pm Dear Madam, I saw you on TV and how you spoke about Singapore having an unemployment rate of 2%, I do not know how this statistic or measurement is done, but maybe you can provide the actual measurements used ? The reason is simple, there are many Singaporeans who are jobless (30+) and up, who find that their jobs have been REPLACED by the influx of cheap labor, and maybe you could actually provide the breakdown of the number of working foreigners we have in Singapore, and we can make the assumption that with every foreigner, one Singaporean is displaced or is jobless, based on the total population count of actual SINGAPOREANS (Singaporeans does not include PR mind you) It also seems that your foreign worker argument is flawed and incorrect as you stood all high and mighty to speak. This is because SM Goh made a recent comment about Quote
  11. I was inside my car after parking it in a proper lot. Off the engine and opened the door while I gathered my things. And out of no where, a lady said "how can he open the doors like that this is a walkway". I turned back and looked, she was walking to the next space looking frustrated and kept staring at me like I did something wrong to her. All these while I was sitting in the drivers seat. She looked 30+ with a 6+ year old girl. And then I thought to myself, this is a walkway? I got out and look, ok, it was a walkway behind my car. I just continued gathering my things, closed the door and went on my way. Look at the pics, I don't know what u guys will think. But to me, no big deal to just cross at the next car right? And I also did not know there is a walkway behind. So in your opinion, do u think I've done something wrong?

http://www.tremeritus.com/2014/03/16/the-alternative-news-in-1-day-80-cant-open-archives-after-50-years/ The Alternative News in 1 day? (80) – Can’t open archives after 50 years? March 16th, 2014 | Author: Contributions I refer to the article “Release of all past cabinet records may not lead to better outcomes: Lawrence Wong” (Today, Mar 11). Transparency may not lead to better outcomes? It states that “But Mr Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI), refuted him, saying that such an open policy may not necessarily lead to better outcomes.” - I am rather puzzled by the reasons given in the subject Parliamentary debate as to why the record of archives which are more than 50 years old, cannot be made public. How can being transparent 50 years later – “may not necessarily lead to better outcomes”? Better outcomes in the future or in the past? Wouldn’t transparency and accountability lead to “better outcomes” now and in the future? Or are we referring to the “outcomes” of our history that cannot be changed? As to “Responding, Mr Wong said the National Archives of Singapore (NAS) does make available public archives for inspection for research and reference. Requests can be made at the NAS’s reading room, and the NAS will consult the relevant agency about providing access to these records. No transparency 50 years later because of “personal privacy”? But while all unclassified information is made available upon request, there are some records which are not available for open access, including those relating to national defence, foreign relations and internal security, as well as documents which may be bound by confidentiality obligations or personal privacy reasons, said Mr Wong.” - What are we saying here? That transparency of Government (and we are not even talking about accountability here) should be subservient to “personal privacy” and “confidentiality obligations”‘ reasons – 50 years after the event! If politicians are so concerned about “personal privacy” 50 years later – perhaps they should not become politicians in the first place. Less transparency = Good governance? With regard to “Mr Wong countered that the Government’s approach “is not transparency for transparency’s sake”, but transparency that leads to good governance.” - I find this to be somewhat self-contradictory. The fundamental basis of “good governance” is transparency and accountability. Check and balance? Our system of democracy which we inherited from the British is fundamentally based on the check and balance of Parliament, the Judiciary and the Executive (Government). So, how can “not being transparent” lead to “good governance”? In respect of “He pointed out that some countries have “gone somewhat overboard with freedom of information legislation or open access”, leading instead to the opaqueness and avoidance of records. - Can we have the names of these countries and an elaboration as to how it has lead “instead to the opaqueness and avoidance of records”? Civil servants won’t record real minutes of meetings? As to “Policy papers or cabinet papers may not have complete information or detail because the civil servants writing them know that the reports will be made available, he said. “I think we have to be careful of such inadvertent consequences.” - What are we saying here? That our highest paid civil servants who have been touted as the most incorruptible and efficient in the world – may not write a correct record of meetings because of the fear that they may be made public 50 years later? Wouldn’t all the people present at the meeting be able to see when the minutes are out – if the civil servant had in fact not written ä factual record of the meeting? If even now we have such an in my view “unfounded” fear – then is there not something wrong with the type of people that we are recruiting into the civil service? – Whatever happened to the values, continual emphasis on integrity and public duty, and training that we are inculcating in them? Why pay the highest salaries in the world – only to arguably, have civil servants who cannot be trusted or relied upon to do their job? “Tian You Yan”? In the final analysis, if I may use the analogy of a Chinese saying “Tian You Yan” (God has eyes) – by not being transparent 50 years after the fact, may have the opposite effect of inculcating a breed of politicians who may not do the right thing – in the comfort that their actions and deliberations may never be subject to the court of public opinion 50 years later. Perhaps we shoud have a compromise by allowing the opening of the Cabinet archives only after all the persons who were in the Cabinet at that time, are long dead and gone. 16. Coffee shop operator Kelvin Ling of 128 Choices Eating House at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 will keep his eateries open over the festive period to attract people who will be visiting their relatives nearby. Chinese New Year is typically a time for shop owners and their staff to rest, but some businesses will remain open as they see this as a perfect opportunity to reap profits. Supermarket chains, coffee shops and even foodcourts have chosen to stay open in recent years, with many citing increases in daily takings of up to 30 per cent, compared with an average day. Even 12 out of the 18 malls along the Orchard Road shopping belt will remain open this year, said the Orchard Road Business Association (Orba). They include Ion Orchard, Orchard Central, Paragon, Wisma Atria and The Centrepoint. Coffee shop operator Kelvin Ling, 35, said he noted a 50 per cent increase in patronage over the Chinese New Year holiday period last year at his two coffee shops. He runs 128 Choices Eating House at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 and HG 106 Food Place at Hougang Avenue 1. 18. Today after work on my way to fetch my wife, somewhere along PIE towards tuas just after BKE exit i heard a 'pop' sound and the car wobbled a bit..... then it's ok again. So i fetched her, using PIE / Clementi Ave 6 / AYE / Keppel Rd / ECP / Rochor Rd / Victoria St / Lanvender St and parked, then makan dinner / visit a fren.... 2.5 hours later I drove home but found the car couldnt go straight.... by the time i reached home 25mins later, the passenger side front tyre was flat, only left 45Nm of air pressure instead of the usual 230Nm.... So I drove to my usual late-opening tyre shop at Balestier Rd to patch it. For the past 20 years++, this is the shop which 'saved' me from getting stuck with a flat tyre many times. $10 per fix, maybe $12 after 10pm.... Any bro knows of other late night tyre shop in case we have an emergency and need to fix tyre after 7pm?
  19. SINGAPORE: Political engagement in Singapore is set to change with the advent of new media. ADVERTISEMENT Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong acknowledged this as much and said the government will have to adapt, get used to it, and turn it to positive effect. Hence, the government will ease up on the ban on political videos and outdoor public demonstrations, he said at his National Day Rally on Sunday night. The new

  22. http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/...223-329594.html News @ AsiaOne Legoland tickets go on sale in Singapore There's even better news: the annual passes are being sold at a promotional price. -myp Joy Fang Thu, Feb 23, 2012 my paper Mr Siegfried Boerst, general manager of Legoland Malaysia, sees Singapore as an "important resident market" for Asia's first Legoland, to open later this year. Lego enthusiasts here can now get tickets to the upcoming Legoland Malaysia more easily, as the theme park's annual passes go on sale at Sistic from today. The tickets were previously available only on Malaysia's AirAsia RedTix website. There's even better news: the annual passes are being sold at a promotional price. An adult (those aged 12 and up) ticket is going at RM195 (S$80) per ticket, while tickets for children (ages three to 11) are going at RM150 each. The promotional prices will last till March 31, and the tickets will be valid from the park's opening day to Dec 31 next year. After March 31, the annual passes will cost RM275 for an adult and RM210 for a child. The park - located in Johor's Iskandar development - will announce its official opening date in April. It will likely be in September or October, depending on the speed of construction, Legoland Malaysia's general manager, Mr Siegfried Boerst, told my paper. The theme park will have an exhibit at the Natas fair from tomorrow to Sunday. "The park is not just for children but also for the adults. We hope they will have a fun family day out that is also educational and interactive," said Mr Boerst. Once the opening date is announced, day passes - at RM140 for an adult, and RM110 for a child - will go on sale, he added. Legoland Malaysia's highlights will include Lego reproductions of landmarks from Asean countries, built with 25 million Lego pieces. Singaporeans can look forward to a mini-Singapore featuring everyday street life such as moving SMRT buses and people, said Mr Boerst. Reproduced landmarks include the Merlion, the Singapore Flyer and the Singapore Zoo, in an area of 10m by 50m. About two to three million pieces will be used to build the Singapore models. Mr Boerst sees Singapore as an "important resident market" and he is working with the Singapore Tourism Board to develop marketing for the park. Tickets to Legoland Malaysia are available through Sistic (www.sistic.com.sg or tel: 6348-5555). http://www.legoland.com.my/

  24. Recent MAS ruling has caused a stir to car buyer and car trader  . MAS claimed that it is to ensure people do not over loan, however their method will in fact make certain group of buyer who really need (not want) a car but do not have enough cash by getting caught in the situation. Why not MAS set up a new credit assessment body - car buyer would need to have themselves assessed so to get Repayment Capability Report before buying a car if they intend to take a loan. E.g. If a person RCR is $60k, if he wish to buy a $60k car, be it new or used, he would not have to pay any down-payment, that applys to any car that is below $60k. However, if he wants to buy a $80k car, then he would have to pay the difference, which is the down-payment. By doing so, it may effectively manage the over loan issue. And MAS could at anytime adjust the rule, such as one could only loan up to 80% of his RCR...... I think this is more straight forward than current scheme and also good to let everyone know what is their repayment capability, so that he would not go beyond what he could afford. What do you all think?
