  1. New opposition candidate expected in Potong Pasir By Zul Othman, TODAY | Posted: 03 November 2009 1829 hrs SINGAPORE: It is likely that Potong Pasir Member of Parliament Chiam See Tong will contest in a Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the next General Election, which is due by February 2012. According to Singapore People's Party (SPP) chairman Sin Kek Tong, "someone new" will be fielded to defend the Potong Pasir ward - a constituency that Mr Chiam has represented since 1984. Mr Sin did not give any details on the potential candidate or which GRC Mr Chiam plans to contest. On Sunday, People's Action Party secretary-general Lee Hsien Loong said at the party's annual convention that "had to be some change with the way we treated Potong Pasir". He was referring to the 2006 election when Mr Chiam had urged voters to vote for him, and get "two MPs for the price of one". Catch the full story in TODAY newspaper on Wednesday.

  15. In spite of what you have been told by everyone, the truth is that Valentine's Day originated hundreds of years ago, in India, and to top it all, in the state of Gujarat !!! It is a well known fact that Gujarati men, specially the Patels, continually mistreat and disrespect their wives (Patelianis). One fine day, it happened to be the 14th day of February, one brave Patelani, having had enough "torture" by her husband, finally chose to rebel by beating him up with a Velan (rolling pin to make chapattis). Yes....the same Velan which she used daily, to make chapattis for him.... only this time, instead of the dough, it was the husband who was flattened. This was a momentous occasion for all Gujarati women and a revolt soon spread, like wild fire, with thousands of housewives beating up their husbands with the Velan. There was an outburst of moaning "chapatti-ed" husbands all over Anand and Amdavad. The Patel men-folk quickly learnt their lesson and started to behave more respectfully with their Patelanis. Thereafter, on 14th February every year, the womenfolk of Gujarat would beat up their husbands, to commemorate that eventful day - the wives having the satisfaction of beating up their husbands with the Velan and the men having the supreme joy of submitting to the will of the women they loved. Soon The Gujju men realized that in order to avoid this ordeal they need to present gifts to their wives....they brought flowers and sweets. This is how the tradition - Velan time - began. As Gujarat fell under the influence of Western culture, the ritual soon spread to Britain and many other Western countries, specifically, the catch words 'Velan time' !!! In course of time, their foreign tongues, this got anglicized to 'Velantime' and then to 'Valentine'. And thereafter, 14th of February, came to be known a! s Valentine's Day and now you know the true story of Valentine's day.
  16. I no longer have any gym facility to use and am running the roads more. Problem is, it's very difficult to guage your distance unless you run on a route where you can drive to measure the distance. Am considering to get one of those watches that can do the above. I've come across Polar 200sd and the other higher Polar models. But it seem 200sd is the most economical but still costing something like usd250. Locally, it cost even more. I also thought of getting the Nike plus system as i already have the shoe. But the Nike shop told me all the stocks have been recalled as there's been a lot of complains for the 1st batch. Anyone out there have used such a gadget? Is the 200sd a weight on your wrist? How about the Pod that you attach to your shoe? Any other brands that i can consider? Tks in advance.
  17. Hi all, need some advice. I got into an accident just now but the other party refuse to provide his NRIC but provided his handphone number. We agreed verbally to settle ourselves, he will fix his own car and i will fix mine, without involving insurance as premium will be higher. Should I go and make a police report and detail down our conversation and forward the report to the insurance so that in future, the other party will not be able to make a claim from me? If i do that, will the insurance be higher next year?

  19. Following revelations by the President of the Association of Criminal Lawyers in Singapore that the laws here, don't seem to be applied fairly and equally to all irregardless of wealth status or political standings which was quickly rebuffed by the present AG. Not withstanding whether there was indeed a marsupial hopping around the court yard , if the above was indeed true to a certain extent ..what then must be done to correct it?
  20. FRANKFURT/TOKYO, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Global sales at BMW, the world's top premium carmaker, plunged by a quarter in November, and Honda backed out of Formula One racing on Friday as the economic downturn exacted a mounting toll on automakers. With even well-heeled consumers keeping a tight grip on their wallets, group vehicle sales at BMW fell 25.4 percent to 96,570 units, led down by a 26.2 percent drop at the flagship BMW brand, it said. [iD:nL5452941] Car sales across the globe have plummeted as consumers curb spending in the face of mass lay-offs and a credit crunch, pushing big U.S. carmakers to the brink and heaping pressure on their foreign rivals, too. In Germany, Europe's biggest auto market, new car sales are expected to hit post-reunification lows this year and next before recovering somewhat in 2010, the VDA auto industry association forecast this week. In Japan, Honda Motor Co <7267.T> delivered a major blow to Formula One by withdrawing from the sport with immediate effect. Japan's number two carmaker is seeking to cut costs to combat the global economic crisis and concluded it would no longer bankroll the Formula One team and its estimated annual budget of $500 million. [iD:nT343829] Honda Chief Executive Takeo Fukui told a news conference a return to the sport could take time, and that there were no plans to continue as an engine supplier. "This difficult decision was taken recently and was made in light of the quickly deteriorating operating environment facing the global auto industry," Fukui told reporters. "Honda must protect its core business activities and secure the long term as widespread uncertainties in the economics around the globe continue to mount." BMW shares were down 2.7 percent in Frankfurt, and Honda's shed 1.9 percent in Tokyo, while the DJ Stoxx autos index <.SXAP> was down 1.8 percent. Detroit remains the epicentre of the consumer earthquake shaking the automotive world. The chief executives of General Motors Corp and Chrysler LLC told the U.S. Congress on Thursday they would consider restarting merger talks if that was what it took to win their slice of up to $34 billion in emergency U.S. government aid. "I would be very willing to look at it seriously," GM CEO Rick Wagoner told the Senate Banking Committee, adding that merger talks earlier this year were dropped on concerns GM did not have the financing to merge with Chrysler. Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli said his job would likely be the first to go in a merger with GM, but if that would save Chrysler and its workers, "I would do it". The chiefs of the Big Three automakers, including Ford Motor Co CEO Alan Mulally, pledged to refocus on higher fuel efficiency vehicles and lower production costs. But they encountered deep skepticism among lawmakers who are suspicious of such promises, given the companies' past failures to wean themselves off gasoline guzzlers and to make innovative cars that consumers want to buy. "I don't trust the car companies' leadership," said New York Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer at the hearing. But in a comment reflecting many lawmakers' sentiments, he added, "We can't let the industry fail."

  22. Monday, November 03, 2008 Spain Lets Jobless Postpone Half of Mortgage Payments Nov. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Spain will allow unemployed workers to put off paying half their monthly mortgage payments for two years, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said today, part of a series of measures aimed at softening the impact of a shrinking economy. The postponed payments, up to a maximum of 500 euros ($640) a month, will be repaid from January 2011 in installments, Zapatero told a news conference in Madrid today. The measure, which applies to mortgages under 170,000 euros ($218,000), could be used by more than 500,000 people, he said. While the government will guarantee the payments due from 2011, the banks will bear the cost of the two-year postponement, said a spokeswoman at the Finance Ministry, who declined to be identified in line with policy.
  23. Let's face it - English is a crazy language There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig . And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it ? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell ? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by f illing it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on . English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
  24. A few tour companies are organising an expo at S'pore Expo this weekends for cheap travelling and hotels to Malaysia and other countries during the coming school holidays....... As I am planning for a short trip to Mayalsia and would like to share this piece of information in MCF. I will be there this Friday.... Disclaimer : Kindly note that I am not working for any of the tour companies or neither do I receive any commission for this. This is just an information and I posted it at "Lite & EZ" column. But this piece of news is also slightly connected with cars as we could be driving up to Malaysia. BTW : should someone did complaint that it does not link anything with cars, Admin, please lock this thread. My apologies for causing the Admin so much work.
