A FORMER bus driver has been charged with causing the death of the wife of a prominent professor at a pedestrian crossing in Clementi three months ago. Chan Mun Hing, 48, faces a jail term of up to five years, or a fine or both, if he is convicted of causing death by a rash act. He was driving an SBS Transit double-decker bus at the junction of Clementi Avenue 3 and Commonwealth Avenue West on April 23 when he allegedly failed to give way to housewife Zhang Huirui, 42. This guy tua ki liao.....sure kana fine very heavy. 10 years back, that person who got caught is my friend brother....also kana fine heavily by the AVA. ============================================ SINGAPORE - The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) seized over 30 wild animals from an individual living in an HDB flat on June 3, its largest inland seizure of wildlife since 2002. The seized animals include highly endangered and threatened species like the slow loris, marmoset, Indian star tortoise and ball python. Other animals seized include three black-tailed prairie dogs, two sailfin dragons and five ornate horned frogs These animals are not allowed to be kept as pets in Singapore. The seized animals have been sent to the Wildlife Reserves Singapore for proper care and custody. A man is currently assisting AVA in the investigations. In Singapore, a permit is required for any import and export/re-export of animals. In addition, as Singapore is a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), it is an offence to be in possession or to trade in any illegally imported or acquired CITES species. If found guilty, the offender shall be liable, on conviction, to a maximum fine of $50,000 per specimen (not to exceed an aggregate of $500,000) and/or jail term of up to 2 years. AVA would like to remind the public not to import or keep wild animals as pets as demand for such animals would fuel illegal wildlife trade. Also, wild animals are not suitable pets as some may transmit zoonotic diseases to humans and can be a public safety risk if mishandled or if they escape into our dense urban environment. Should members of the public have information on illegal wildlife activities, please contact AVA at 6325 7625 to make a report immediately. According to Chinese evening daily, Shin Min Daily News, the driver did not realise he had run over the man. It was also reported that the front and back wheels of his bus had run over the victim. The driver had also reversed over the man, but was unaware until a cleaner from a nearby condominium alerted him to stop.

I reported the accident to the insurance firm-designated workshop, thinking I could go ahead with the repairs. However, half a year passed with no progress. The workshop said the insurance company was sitting on the claim. When I called the insurance company, it said the other driver never reported the incident, so it could not proceed with the claim. I made a police report but the police said they would not take action as there was no injury. I later found out that the other driver and I had policies under the same insurance company. Is this the way an insurance company acts on claims? Is there a loophole somewhere? My car was damaged but I cannot receive compensation even though it was not my fault. The insurance company asked me to claim on my own insurance or go to a lawyer, for which I would have to cough out more money. I am at my wits' end. Wendy Ang Kweng Gee (Ms)

BRUSSELS: The European Commission has carried out surprise inspections at several major oil companies over possible price fixing in breach of EU anti-trust rules. The Commission did not name any of the companies involved in Tuesday's raids but British energy giant BP, Shell and Norway's Statoil said that their offices had been visited. The Commission statement explained that even small distortions of the market could have a "huge impact on the prices of crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels purchases and sales, potentially harming final consumers". In a statement, BP confirmed it "is one of the companies that is subject to an investigation ... We are cooperating fully with the investigation and unable to comment further at this time." A Shell spokesman said: "We can confirm that Shell companies are currently assisting the European Commission in an inquiry into trading activities. Norwegian firm Statoil and Platts, the world's leading oil price reporting agency, also both confirmed they were being investigated. "The suspected violations are related to the Platts' Market-On-Close (MOC) price assessment process, used to report prices in particular for crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels, and may have been ongoing since 2002," said Statoil, which is 67 per cent owned by the Norwegian government. The European Commission said officials "carried out unannounced inspections at the premises of several companies active in and providing services to the crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels sectors. "These inspections took place in two EU member states," a statement said, adding that one country in the European Economic Area (EEA) -- of which Norway is a member -- was also involved. "The Commission has concerns that the companies may have colluded ... to manipulate the published prices for a number of oil and biofuel products," it said. Additionally, the firms "may have prevented others from participating in the price assessment process, with a view to distorting published prices." British motoring groups and politicians lined up to voice their anger at the allegations. David Bizley, technical director of car services company RAC, said the claims were "worrying news for motorists" and vowed his company would campaign for greater transparency in the UK fuel market. Shadow energy and climate change secretary Caroline Flint called the reports "very concerning", which if true, suggested "shocking behaviour" in the oil market. "When the allegations of price fixing in the gas market were made, Labour warned that opaque deals and relying on price reporting agencies left the market vulnerable to abuse. "These latest allegations of price fixing in the oil market raise very similar questions," added the Labour MP. "Consumers need to know that the prices they pay for their energy or petrol are fair, transparent and not being manipulated by traders." Colleague Chris Leslie said any evidence of price fixing would be "a shocking scandal for our financial markets" while Conservative MP Robert Halfon repeated his calls for a full investigation into alleged cartels and market manipulation. "Last year, in a debate that I pressed for, parliament voted unanimously for an investigation into the oil market," he explained. "These latest allegations underline why that must happen urgently. "High oil prices are crushing families across Britain. Motorists are being taken for a very expensive ride." Britain's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) ruled out a probe four months ago, concluding there was "very limited evidence" that pump prices were being manipulated. Former Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman Matthew Oakeshott compared the allegations to the Libor scandal, which resulted in several banks paying out huge settlements over claims they manipulated the key interest rate. Larry Neal, the president of Platts, rejected similar accusations in a letter to the Financial Times earlier this week. "Your comparison of PRA (price reporting agency) activity to Libor is a false one," he said. "While PRAs do obtain information from 'traders who may have a vested interest in moving the markets,' the agencies do not have any such vested interest," he added. I am looking to take over a HDB shop from someone but I am not familiar with the process. Assignment fee - is this declared to HDB in the transfer of tenancy ? The current tenant is asking for 50% of the assignment up front as a deposit - is that reasonable ? What if the transfer fails to go thru ? Any property guru out there to advise ?

recently whenever I am going over a hump, esp with people in the back seat, the undercarriage would be hit. seems that the suspension or shock absorbers is too soft. I have replaced all four shock absorbers but problem still around. should I change the spring/suspension so that the car is not so bouncy? btw, I am driving a 2007 Camry 2.4

SINGAPORE: Several MPs have raised their concerns in Parliament over the latest changes to car ownership policies. Under the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) car loan curbs, buyers have a maximum of five years to their service car loans. They also have to foot a downpayment of 40 per cent or more for a new vehicle. The changes, they say, not only have an effect on second-hand car dealers but also large families. Mr Pritam Singh, MP for Aljunied GRC, said: "It would be imperative for the government to look at possible tweaks to the system if indeed larger families and families that include disabled singaporeans or elderly parents are genuinely affected, as the effects of the new policy kicks in over next few months. "One specific way could be to raise the LTV ratio for cars back to 70 per cent as it was previously, but only for families with two or more children so as to buttress and incentivise the government's efforts to raise TFR (Total Fertility Rate). Dr Lee Bee Wah, MP for Nee Soon GRC, said: "With regards to the restriction on private car loans, there has been plenty of unhappiness from the grounds, from existing car owners to second-hand car dealers. "Recently, I received a very long email from a resident of mine. He told me that he has been a second-hand car dealer for 17 years. He started off as a salesman after ROD, and he worked his way up and he is currently the CEO. He has 235 cars in hand and 50 staff, and he is crying out for help. He told me he is going to sell his house but he worries he cannot save his business." "As I read his email, my heart beats with his. Again, the change is so drastic and immediate that some second-hand car dealers like my resident will have to fold up their businesses. Is this cut so critical and so market sensitive that the Government cannot give any advance notice?" - CNA -

Just to share a good experience i had with a used car dealer which i am in no way related to him. sign the sales contract and took over a 2009 car in week 2 of 2013. Only verbally agreed that i will come back to him if my car got any problem with the next 2 weeks. Car was in good condition when i test drive.. call me a easy buyer .. anyway its a bread and butter car so i didnt srutinise the car maybe like other detail buyers .. Test driven once and was happy with the visual inspection.. decided to buy after some consideration. Last week, the door indicators were faulty. went down to their associated WS for repair.. but before i could make it.. realise i got a bigger problem. Coolant is empty.. after 2 refills.. must be a leak somewhere .. Alerted the dealer and he was ok i include this in the repair job today.. Guess what, he honour what was promise and got me a brand new radiator.. Phew, i was glad and really please with this dealer ..i wasnt expecting this after reading so many bad remarks about the used car business. Bros, i guess it isnt everyday we meet a "honest" fella in the used car business.. so i thought i should share this with you folks :)

The southern Chinese city is one of the world's biggest markets for shark fins, which are used to make soup that is an expensive staple at Chinese banquets and viewed by many Asians as a rare delicacy. Activist Gary Stokes who has visited the site estimated there are 15,000 to 20,000 fins being laid to dry on the rooftop on Hong Kong island ahead of an anticipated surge in demand over Lunar New Year in February this year. "This is shocking," the Hong Kong coordinator for conservation group Sea Shepherd told AFP, saying it was the first time that he has spotted such a massive hoarding of shark fins in one place in the Asian financial hub. "This is the most graphic, brutal and barbaric part of the industry -- the element of chopping a shark's fin off and throw it back into the water is horrific and inhumane," he added. Stokes believed the large amount of shark fins were destined for China, and that traders moved to dry the shark fins on secluded rooftops instead of sidewalks -- as they have done in the past -- to avoid public anger. Campaigns against consuming shark fins have gained ground in Hong Kong in recent years, after major hotel chains decided to drop the soup from the menus, and home carrier Cathay Pacific said in September it would stop carrying unsustainable sourced shark products on its cargo flights. "The demand in Hong Kong is definitely decreasing but unfortunately, the demand in China is growng," Stokes said. "As long as there is no protection for the sharks, the (demand) will just keep going on and on," he added, urging Hong Kong authorities to ban the trade. Environmentalists say the sustainable shark fin industry is tiny and most of the products are harvested in a way that threatens scores of shark species deemed vital for healthy oceans. About 73 million sharks are killed every year, with Hong Kong importing about 10,000 tonnes annually for the past decade, according to environmental group WWF. Most of those fins are then exported to mainland China. FOSHAN - The driver who ran over and killed a 2-year-old girl in Foshan, Guangdong province, in October 2011 was sentenced to 30 months in prison for negligent homicide. A court found in September that Hu Jun had driven a van over Wang Yue, a girl widely known as Yue Yue, in a hardware market in Foshan. Minutes later, the girl was run over again, that time by a truck. Video footage showed that at least 18 people passed by the child after the accident without helping her. Seven minutes after Yue Yue had been run over, a 57-year-old rag collector named Chen Xianmei spotted her and found her parents. The girl died in a hospital a week later. Hu Jun's final sentence was a year shorter than the one he had received when he was convicted, Yangcheng Evening News reported on Wednesday. The report said witnesses, as well as other evidence, suggested that Hu had not been initially aware that he had hit someone. It wasn't until three days after the accident that he turned himself in to the police. Hu filed an appeal over his initial sentence. He and others involved in the accident eventually reached an agreement with Yue Yue's parents, pledging to pay them 303,000 yuan ($48,647) in compensation. The parents later said they understood Hu. The court that heard Hu's appeal, the Foshan Intermediate People's Court, decided the agreement constituted grounds for reducing Hu's criminal responsibility. Yue Yue's case gave rise to heated discussions across the country, prompting commentators and the public to discuss morality in modern society. Yue Yue's death, although extremely sad, has had some good effects, said Tan Fang, a professor with the South China Normal University in Guangzhou. The government and public were quick to criticise the indifference shown by those who passed by the injured girl without trying to help her. And there have been institutional changes, he said. The city of Guangzhou, for example, has made significant strides in ensuring that good Samaritans are rewarded for their deeds. And more people have started to think about the responsibilities they have as citizens and about the importance of living up to moral standards. As a result, good Samaritans have become far more common. Tan founded a website about good Samaritans in China in 2008 and started writing a column about Yue Yue's case to guide the public's reflections about her death. recently had an external audit done ... but due to unforeseen circumstances, we failed. yesterday, my boss called us to his office to give us a dressing down. i really do not see what this could do ? and all through out the "session" - no solution or what to do next time ? what wud you/your boss do when a problem happens ? just scold everyone without anything positive coming out of it ?
