  1. SINGAPORE: From April 1, Singaporeans returning from overseas and tourists can enjoy more Goods and Services Tax (GST) relief. Those who spend more than 48 hours abroad will be able to enjoy GST relief of up to S$600 - double the current amount of S$300.

The Singapore Customs said the amount has been revised upwards to keep pace with rising expenditures, and brings the relief amounts closer to international norms.

Those who are away from Singapore for less than 48 hours can get GST relief for goods valued up to S$150.

Customs will also do away with the age criterion for GST relief claims. Currently, the GST relief depends on the traveller's age, in addition to the time he spends outside Singapore.

Those below 18 years old currently claim a lower amount for GST relief.

The new GST relief will apply to all travellers, including children, with the exception of pass/permit holders and crew members.

All goods brought into Singapore for local use or consumption are subject to GST of seven per cent.

To minimise inconvenience to travellers bringing a small amount of goods into Singapore for personal use, they are granted GST relief based on the value of goods they bring in. Such goods include new articles, souvenirs, gifts or food items.

The GST relief does not apply to liquor, tobacco products, petroleum and goods imported for commercial purposes.

-CNA/ac Currently, no GST relief is given to those, such as day tripper to JB, who usually spent less than 24 hrs away from SG if he is below 18 years old. For day-tripper who are 18 years old & above, gets a GST relief for goods up to S$50. With the new rule to be implemented in Apr, day-tripper to Malaysia/Batam who spent less than 48 hrs away from SG, will get a GST relief for goods up to S$150 regardless of the age. Thus, for a family of 4 on a day trip to JB, the total relief will be S$600, which means a family of 4 can bring back more than RM1400 worth of goods from MY wef 1 Apr. Will this result in Singaporean making more shopping trips across the causeway? And also more traffic jams at the checkpoints?

  3. Hi guys, Desperate liao, I purchased some stuff from US last month and the package was sent out by USPS but they missed out my unit number! 4. Since the part on the experience of the overseas grad is taken from TR, I will leave it to you to your judgments to its authenticity What is most interesting is the part highlighted in red Did not know the HK govt will go to the full extent of performing all the necessary checks to ensure employers only employ foreigners because they have got no choice to protect the interests of the locals there. Any bros familiar with HK or it's policies can advice if this is true? From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...me_anymore.html Posted on 20 Jan 2012 Woes of an overseas grad: S'pore doesn't feel like home anymore STOMPer Alex shares the experiences of a Singaporean overseas grad, who found it tough getting a job both overseas and locally. The overseas grad says Singapore doesn't feel like home anymore because of the large numbers of foreigners here. Says the STOMPer: "From a Singaporean overseas graduate... "| The Singaporean overseas graduate wrote in to the TR Emeritus website, and these are excerpts from her entry: "I feel that this whole

    Overseas votes

A little confused about the effect of overseas voting. With certain areas (Joo Chiat, PP) being soooo closely contested, why did the returning officer declare the result conclusive from local votes alone? I think Joo Chiat hung on 400 votes or so, were there fewer than 400 total votes cast by Singaporeans registered to Joo Chiat *all over the world*? Did the Oppo even bother to clarify this?
  11. hi, does anyone know? im currently staying overseas, so do i need to vote? thanks,
  12. Hi there, Not talking those who are property agents or investor who buy and sell houses as a living. i.e. they don't stay/live there. When you own overseas property do you do it for the purpose of retirement, migration, holidays getaway or others. Some friends actually bought houses nearby the university for their kids who are studying there. Which in your opinion, is the country that offers the ease of property ownership and with the least taxation? Thank you. Regards,

  14. There is a possibility that I will be posted away for 2 years. I have a 5 year old car, which I do not want to sell, as I love this car. If you are in my position, what would you do? I have thought about a few options: 1) Let a friend use it while I am away for 1K a month. 2) Convert to Off-Peak. Any other options? Inputs appreciated. Thaks.
  15. How to safe guard my car in MSCP?

  19. I received a letter today from MINDEF about "Failure to notify on Overseas Trips" during my holiday on 25th to 28th March 2010. I'm surprised because I've not done so since my ORD on 1993. I'm not an active NS personnel and I'm PES E type, I've not gone through BMT. I've asked before after ORD that I do not need to do so. I've written to MINDEF to clarify, waiting for their reply. Is this a new procedure from MINDEF for PES E personnel?
  20. I have notice this issue for very very long time. Until now I don't understand why. Many Ang Mos, they can strike out a conversation with anyone, esp their own kin. Sporeans, very unlikely will chat up other Sporeans when Overseas. I tried a few times but many Sporeans I tried to speak to, are very unfriendly, snobbish, arrogant, reserved, cocky etc. Its the women that are very Stuck-up to you as a stranger than the AMTKs. It is very easy to identify Sporeans in overseas public places - Singlish. Some force an artificial accent...The other reasons are above... It also seems that they are ashame to identify with Sporeans and try hard NOT to be Sporeans. Our passports are the most welcomed one in the World. I readily say I'm a Sporean and not
  21. Wife and I worked overseas for a few years and just returned to SG. Having lived overseas, I find it hard to buy a car in SG since they're ridiculously expensive. However SG's public transport isn't that great as well. Hoping to get some recommendations on affordable cars? Thanks Our combined income is $200K p.a. base salary. Can afford standard Japanese car but also concern about paying too much for cars in Singapore
  22. Hi folks Need to get your views. I have a 1 year old latio (registered in May 08), but will be going overseas for 2 years. So what do I do with the car? My options that I can think of are as follows: 1) Sell the car Pros - Get the cash first. No hassle Cons - Lose out in terms of depreciation. (Bought for $60k, indicative selling price for 1 yr old latio is around $45k, 3 year old selling for around $35k) 2) Rent out the car for 2 years. Pros - Earn some rental income for 2 years and sell the car when I am back. Hopefully, rental income is more than $10k to offset the difference in the selling price in 1 year old latio vs 3 year old latio Cons - Difficult to get (trustworthy) lobang. Higher risk, in terms of accident, insurance renewal, etc. 3) Let the car idle/lend to friends/relatives Pros - Can use car when back during holidays Cons - Lose $.
  23. any subscribers to Hoiio service here ? anyone subscribed to the $5 overseas roaming service ? how does the charges work ? will there be additional charges other than the call charges by hoiio and the overseas simm card provider ?
  24. I will be going on long term o/s posting in about 8 months time. Bought a new car just 4 months back and definitely cannot sell off the car without taking a big fat loss. Can't find anyone close to take over the car either. Heard about car rental companies who can arrange for renting the car out, something like monthly installment will be taken care of by the rental, while I still have to pay road tax, insurance etc. How does it actually work? Especially the liability portion, will it be legally arranged such that while the car is under my name, any damages/offences caused by the car during the rental period will not be my liability? Anyone in this line or understands this line, appreciate some advice please. Thanks.
  25. Hi Guys, I left my car outside my house while i was overseas. The car is parked legally(i.e broken white line), however, it was facing the wrong direction. So i was fined for parking in a way opposing the traffice. Got 2 tickets for the same offence on different days by URA. Any chances of writing in? Comments pse ;)
