  1. Was planning an exotic family vacation this coming december but was thwarted by mis-timing. So it's back to our good old Northern neighbour. The unavoidable monsoon means beaches are off-limit. That leaves mountains, fabulous eating haunts and maybe some in-land sightseeing. This has been asked before, but I thought no harm asking again. Any interesting suggestions? PS: At least I get to drive, which I much prefer to flying.
  2. Hi all, Just to share a piece of good news with everyone. Cars and Stars have launched the Retrenchment Protection Plan for all our car buyers. It is an exclusive plan to protect our customers from being suffocated in the event of retrenchment. Through this plan, Cars & Stars, and our financing arm Speed Credit Pte Ltd, will assist the customer in paying his car loan repayments should he get retrenched. This will allow our customer to conserve his savings, and also channel his resources into necessary living expenses and getting a new job; instead of worrying about the upcoming car loan repayment. Please feel free to check it out at our website for more details. Any comments and enquiries are most welcome. Cheers!

  4. The holiday bug's still biting, and the workload which piled up during my December vacation is already having an effect on me. Remedy? Take a 3D2N break somewhere within a 500km radius. My preference is either hills or beaches in a decent resort with easy access to sumptious food. That can't be a lot to ask for. I consider myself well travelled, so choosing this destination pose a small challenge, and the challenge is where? Hills: Genting - expect to be crowded Frasers - tranquil but boring Cameron - been there 5 times in the last 5 yrs. Besides, it's > 500km Berjaya Hills - frenchie feeling has since worn off Beaches: Desaru - When it's near, I want to go far Port Dickson - wouldn't call that a beach Rompin - Anywhere other resort besides Summerset? Kuantan - Swiss Garden: 70% Singaporean. Hyatt: Hmmm, that's a thought. Beach not great though Cherating - Ruled out Impiana, Legend. Left with Club Med or Awana Kijal Terengganu - Well, > 500km Tioman - Snorkelling...worth considering, though a bit commercialised Any suggestions from experience?

  6. Two German children - aged six and seven - have been stopped by police from eloping to Africa to tie the knot in the sun, reports say. The budding lovebirds, identified as Mika and Anna-Lena, packed bathing costumes, sunglasses and a lilo and headed for the airport. They even had the presence of mind to invite along an official witness - Anna-Lena's five-year-old sister. The three got as far as Hanover railway station before police intervened. The young couple were "very much in love" and had decided to get married in Africa "where it is warm", police spokesman Holger Jureczko told the AFP news agency. Sun-seekers The idea for the getaway wedding was born as the children's families celebrated New Year's eve together and Mika regaled the two girls with stories of a recent holiday to Italy. They can still put their plan into action at a later date Holger Jureczko Hanover police spokesman The following morning, as their parents slept, the intrepid trio walked 1km (0.6 miles) to the local tram station at Langenhagen, where they hopped aboard a tram for Hanover central station. But the group aroused the suspicion of a guard as they waited for a train to the airport, and police were called in. Officers persuaded the children they would not get far without tickets and money, but consoled them with a free tour of the police station, where they were shortly picked up by relieved parents. Although any marriage plans have been put on hold for now, police did not altogether rule out the possibility of an African wedding. "They can still put their plan into action at a later date," AFP quoted the spokesman as saying. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7811686.stm
  7. malaysia boleh!!! ==================== MALAYSIA has put off plans to ban foreign-registered vehicles from filling up on subsidised petrol in its border areas with Singapore and Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said yesterday. The ban was originally to start today for Thai-registered vehicles in the north and on June 9 for drivers of Singapore-registered cars in the south. But Datuk Seri Najib, who is in Singapore to attend a security summit, told reporters that an anti-inflation Cabinet committee would meet tomorrow to review the plan. 'We have to find a new effective date because there are other matters, like for example, can we have separate pumps because the Singaporeans are saying that they don't mind paying the market rate,' he said. His comments indicated that the government may allow foreigners to buy higher-priced fuel, whereas the earlier plan was to impose a total ban on foreigners buying fuel. He said that the postponement was made following requests by Singaporeans. Many Malaysians who work in Singapore have also complained that they should be allowed to enjoy subsidised rates for their Singapore-registered vehicles, he added. The move is part of Malaysia's measures to curb soaring subsidies, which are expected to cost the government RM45 billion (S$19 billion) this year as global oil prices skyrocket. It bars foreign-registered vehicles from refuelling at petrol stations within 50km of the country's borders with Singapore and Thailand. The penalty for station owners who flout the rule is a fine of up to RM250,000 or a jail term of three years. Separately, the Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore, speaking to The Straits Times yesterday, said that the Malaysian government is conscious of the 'practical issues' that have arisen from the proposed ban. There are many Malaysians who own Singapore vehicles, including some who live in Johor Baru but travel daily to work here, Datuk N. Parameswaran said. They should not be 'penalised'. 'Being Malaysian, they should be able to enjoy a Malaysian facility extended to Malaysians,' he said. Mr Parameswaran said that government officials meeting tomorrow will discuss suggestions that Malaysians who own Singapore-registered vehicles be allowed to buy petrol by flashing their identity card, the MyKad. 'That's a very practical possibility,' he added. It had been reported that some Malaysians who own Singapore-registered vehicles were upset by the ban. But others, like Ms Jenny Leong, thought it was fair. 'I work in Singapore and live here, so I shouldn't get to enjoy the subsidy,' said the 60-year-old financial consultant, who is a permanent resident here. ASSOCIATED PRESS

  9. Let me explain to you guys. Family plan is to assist those who frequently visit their family and is entitle to purchase the family season ticket at 50% but then you have to own a 100% season ticket at your own estate. In order to purchase the family season ticket, i have to: * Visit HDB branch/AXS machine on every 28th of the month. * No GIRO payment Isnt it a crap? Last week, i came back from my Honey Moon, hence missed out the purchased, and it was already mid of the month. I drop by HDB branches, wanted to purchase the family season ticket, and the officer responded me, there is no more family season ticket due to all the lots has been taken up. I explained to her, i am just visiting not overnight, at most 2hrs++, on weekends, there is plenty of lots. The officer just keep mentioning no more lots for the family season ticket. I used to have 100% season ticket at my mum place, i know the situation very well cause even sometime i could not get a parking lot at night after 8++pm, but there is still other lots at other blocks. The family plan to what i see, is not helping at all in terms of financial & family relationships. Moreover, I cant use GIRO which i personally think that because GIRO got rebate and HDB is not willing to lose a few dollars or say absorb the loses. Damn crap man. However, i found a way to purchase the family season ticket that is through DBS online banking. But there is a flaw. That is as long as i purchase online, there wont be anyone responding me whether there is anymore family season ticket. I m fine to make internet banking on every 28th of the month, but i just find it crap whereby i cant pay by GIRO.

  13. Singtel plan offers free iPhone Tue, Aug 19, 2008 AsiaOne Singtel is offering customers a free Apple iPhone if they sign-up for a two-year, $205 monthly SingTel subscription plan. The much sought-after phone will be available in Singapore come Friday August 22. When the new 3G iPhone was released earlier this year in Hong Kong, Japan and New Zealand, fans braved the cold weather and queued up for days to ensure they could get their hands on one. SingTel is the first telco to bring the iPhone into Singpore. Other mobile providers Starhub and MobileOne should be offering the iPhone here by year's end. Existing SingTel customers can also get the iPhone if they sign up for a 24-month, that will run concurrently with their existing plans. Customers on SingTel's iThree Plus which goes for $192.60 a month will also receive the iPhone for free. Those on the iTwo Plus plan will have the option to sign up for a $95 monthly plan on a 24-month contract to get the iPhone at a discounted price of $208 for the 16GB model and $49 for the 8GB model. iTwo Value customers will get the 16GB iPhone for $508 and the 8GB model for $348 if they sign up for a $56 monthly plan on a 24-month contract. iOne Plus customers paying $25.68 per month will have to pay $848 for the 16GB and $698 for the 8GB phone. Sales will begin 'at the stroke of midnight' on Friday at the telco's Comcentre Building, a SingTel spokesman told The Straits Times. Wait for M1 and Starhub?
  14. July 5, 2008 Not a matter of faith, but of rights I REFER to the open letter NTUC Income chief executive officer Tan Suee Chieh sent to me last Wednesday and, presumably, to the rest of Income's policyholders. It is unfortunate that Mr Tan and his new management team have not grasped the fundamental concern of existing policyholders regarding Income's bonus-restructuring exercise. Contrary to what he believes is a question of faith in him and his management team, the bone of contention for most policyholders is about how Income has unilaterally restructured the bonus scheme on not only new insurance plans, but existing ones as well. The key question Mr Tan and his management team should ask is this: If the customer had known that Income would execute an about-turn and change the bonus proportion at its own discretion, would the then-prospective policyholder have signed up? It should be the right of each consumer or policyholder, not the insurer, to determine what is in his best interest. The fact that NTUC Income has unilaterally implemented the change in the bonus scheme without allowing existing policyholders the choice of opting in or out shows a complete disregard for the sanctity of policy agreements and policyholders' rights and freedom to choose. I must therefore question the sincerity of Income's 'guided principles' to protect and enhance the interests of its policyholders. It is like telling a child he is being locked in a cage to prevent him falling down and getting hurt. As society progresses and the financial sector matures, we expect a more balanced approach to consumers' rights. Dennis Liu http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/Sto...ory_254808.html
  15. Pay As You Drive a better plan than others? SINCE the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system was introduced about 10 years ago, there have been numerous changes in terms of gantry points, base charges and increments, but traffic volume has yet to be reduced to optimum level. All these changes did not resolve the congestion problem, but instead created more confusion. I bet almost all motorists will still follow the same travel pattern come July 7 when the five new gantries and new rates take effect. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has overlooked the fact that all roads in Singapore are linked and any diversion of traffic from one location will create a problem somewhere else. So, in terms of economic loss arising from slower traffic, the net effect will remain unchanged or become even worse due to motorists' confusion. Furthermore, all explanations given by the LTA so far are not convincing, judging from feedback in the newspapers. A good policy should be clear, simple, convincing and have the full support of the people. To put a stop to this firefighting, we should abolish the current ERP and road tax systems and replace them with a Pay As You Drive (PAYD) scheme. Under PAYD, the LTA can build thousands of gantries on all major roads and tax motorists based solely on use. It can impose different rates for different types of vehicles and ensure each motorist is not charged more than the current road tax and estimated ERP charges. With the PAYD system in place, every motorist will plan his journey carefully and will not drive unless absolutely necessary. Many will also opt to travel by public transport. 17. I was helping my sister set up access to internet yesterday (at her small shop). Unfortunately, the free internet service "Qmax-wireless@sg" was too weak for her shop's location. After several trials, I decide to give up. I was thinking of helping her subscribe to a service provider instead of tapping to wireless@sg. Her requirement is very basic: Just to surf net and reply Emails. No downloadings. Speed is not a top priority. What is the setup cost and cheapest plan available? Thanks all.
  18. [inline pic1.jpg] Motorists will have to dig deep into those pockets from July 7-2008. Five new gantries, forming a cordon along the Singapore River Line, will go live to regulate the evening traffic flow from 6 pm to 8 pm, bringing the total number of gantries to 65. Mio Plan

Would like to get some feedback on Mio Plan. The hot deal http://home.singtel.com/hotdeals/ The package current now offering $60.63 expiring promotion on 16/5/08. I need to get some feedback before registering by this thursday. The package comes with 1. Mobile line 2. Residential line 3. 3mb broadband I have thoroughly compared with StarHub standalone package, it seems like Singtel still win StarHub, however, the only issue here is Singtel uses Phoneline for broadband, and sharing residential line. What i am considering between StarHub vs Singtel is: Singtel Plan 1. Modem must be turned on 24/7 365 days due to residential line 2. Mobile line comes with free Caller ID 3. With current promotion, everything is wavied off. 4. Modem is foc, and warranty 2 years. Rumors: i heard some people feedback saying that Mio plan is fine, but the broadband still unstable. StarHub Plan 1. Power value cost $25.68, no caller id 2. max online surflite, 2 mb $18.40 for first 11 month, the rest 13 month will be $29.96 3. total for first 11 month is $25.68+18.40 = $44.08 4. total for the 13 month is $25.68+29.96= $55.64 5. the rest will be residential line cost 5. If i need caller ID, i need to pay additional As nowadays everyone is holding Mobile phone, by having a residential line is necessary which can be uses to minimize the mobile talk time. Your feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
  21. plan to drive 2-3 years only. since we know OPC cars very hard to sell, my plan is to buy a parf car that is close to paper. so when time comes at 5th year, i can scrap. we also know road tax more ex for parf cars but i calculated is more worth to pay for road tax then to top up when i need to sell an OPC. comments on my plan? seems good so far!
  22. Would like to get feedback if there is a BIG difference if i were to subscribe to this plan. The green pipe seems to be choked, in fact when my 12mbps plan contract ended, i dowgraded to 1 mbps as starhub had the nerve to charge me $80 without contract, and i was reluctant to sign a contract as the line was shitty. At 12 mbps it was as slow as when starhub first came out with the 1.5 mbps plan. Now that i downgraded, lo and behold, the connection is still as shitty only this time its about 20 percent worse. So i was thinking, would things be significantly better if i were to go all the way for 100mbps. any current users can shed some light.
  23. It's the time of the year again, everybody's excited and looking forward to getting their bonuses after a year's hard work. How do you plan to spend your bonus?
