  3. I was watching the Channel U news a few minutes ago. There was a Taiwanese teacher who bought an oil extracting machine from Japan at S$20k. The operation looked simple. Just need to feed shattered pieces of plastic into the machine and after evaporation, oil could be extracted. Has anyone seen this machine before? How come it is not imported into Singapore? I want to buy one such machine; become a full-time plastic-collecting Karung guni and sell oil to fellow MCFers. I will follow the proper procedures, I will register as a thread sponser.
  4. Dear all, I have an open shelf (for item display) and wish to retro-fit with a plastic cover. Does anyone know where I could get a plastic panel (sheet) for this purpose? The size is about 1.7m(L) x 0.8m (width) x 5mm (thick). How much would it cost? Thank you.
  5. I just received this in my email. Looks POSSIBLY genuine. anyway, i do not consume such food be they in JB or SG. outside oil is used many many times before being changed. i'd rather fire up my deep fryer at home where the oil is changed after 10 fryings or so
  6. dunno if this been posted here, but looks disgusting. http://wineanddine.asiaone.com/Wine%252CDi...0313-54189.html JOHOR - SOME hawkers in Johor Baru are literally cooking popular snacks such as goreng pisang and keledek with melted plastic, creating a health scare, a news report said. The News Straits Times reported recently that e-mails on the unethical practice have been circulating to warn people of the potential health hazards of eating extra crispy fried snacks or even chicken. The e-mails describe how some hawkers had been seen adding plastic straws and bottles into boiling oil before frying their snacks. The snacks would then remain crispy for several hours. Factory worker Rauf Hamdan, 24, was cited by the newspaper as one of the 'witnesses'. Mr Rauf said he saw a goreng pisang seller in Johor Baru throw a plastic bottle into boiling oil. "When I asked the hawker about it, he just said matter-of-factly that his customers had not complained of any health hazards from eating his goreng pisang." "He also said this 'recipe' was now popular among many hawkers like him." Plastic bottles are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which can cause various forms of cancer and birth deformities if ingested. According to the e-mails cited by New Straits Times, the trend allegedly started in Thailand, for frying ikan bilis and onions. It spread to Kedah and Perlis, then the rest of the country, the report said. Another witness said via email that his uncle had allegedly seen a goreng pisang seller adding plastic drinking straws into hot oil in Perlis. According another e-mail, a hawker in Cameron Highlands allegedly melted a five-litre empty cooking oil bottle in boiling oil by stirring it in, New Straits Times reported. Similar accounts are spreading among blogs. The Consumers Association of Penang research officer T. Subbarao said that the agency would launch an immediate investigation.

  9. Mon Dec 10, 2007 8:22am EST By Claire Sibonney TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's largest outdoor-goods chain has pulled water bottles and food containers made of polycarbonate plastic from its shelves over worries about the chemical bisphenol A, which has been linked to cancer and reproductive problems in animals. Vancouver-based Mountain Equipment Co-op became the first major Canadian retailer to stop selling products that contain bisphenol A over fears the chemical can leach from plastic food and water containers. "Inconclusive science and regulatory uncertainty presently surrounds bisphenol-A (BPA)," the company said in a statement. "For these reasons, MEC has stopped selling polycarbonate water bottles and food containers until guidance is provided by the Government of Canada on the health risks posed by BPA." The Canadian co-operative joins U.S.-based Patagonia in dropping the products because of health concerns. The chemical, which can mimic the effects of the hormone estrogen in cells, has been surrounded by controversy. Some North American researchers and environmentalists have shown it can cause several types of cancer as well as developmental, neural, behavioral and reproductive harm in animals. Industry says the products are not dangerous, citing studies from government agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that food and beverage containers manufactured from polycarbonate do not pose a health risk to humans. "Rarely has a chemical been the subject of such intense scientific testing and scrutiny, and still, important agencies across the globe agree that there is no danger posed to humans from polycarbonate bottles," said Tom Cummins, spokesman for Nalgene and Nunc Brand Products, which manufacturers the popular Nalgene polycarbonate water bottles. Besides hard-plastic water bottles, bisphenol A is also used in some baby bottles and the linings of some food cans, including most major brands of infant formula, according to a study co-released this week by Environmental Defence Canada and the Washington-based Environmental Working Group. "We have study after study showing that this chemical is toxic,... and there are safe and available alternatives that are affordable," said Aaron Freeman, policy director of Environmental Defence Canada. Canada's health department declined to comment before it releases preliminary results of a review of the chemical's effects next spring. "We are looking at as much research as we can to make a very science-based assessment," said Joey Rathwell, a spokeswoman for Health Canada. Norway and the European Union are also reviewing the product. Japanese manufacturers decided voluntarily to stop making products using polycarbonate plastic five to six years ago.
