Leaders of Singapore's opposition parties have rejected Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's recent comments that a two-party system won't work in Singapore because of a dearth of talent. Referring to the speech PM Lee made at the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Kent Ridge Ministerial Forum held on Tuesday, the Singapore Democratic Party said in a statement, "Singaporeans will decide the political system, not the PAP." "There's no need for the PAP to do anything with itself but to ensure a free and fair election system and a free and pluralistic media," it added. SDP was referring to PM Lee's revelation that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) had "seriously considered" splitting into two but eventually decided against it. Several opposition leaders said that it's more important to build a healthier political system and work towards a different future model of governance rather than be solely dependent on a one-party system. At the forum, PM Lee said that he is putting together the "next A-Team for Singapore" and told his young audience that now was not the best time to buy "insurance" and vote for the opposition. Best time for 'insurance'? Secretary-general of the Workers' Party (WP) Low Thia Khiang, however, told Today newspaper, "I think buying insurance is the right thing to do. If PM thinks we shouldn't buy insurance, then why do we buy MediShield? Should we wait till we fall sick before we buy it?" "Now is the best time to buy insurance. Conditions are now good for us

  6. Currently the formula is pegged to the top 8 professions. I think this introduces a few problems such as likely to cause a skew and biasness and hence increase the income gap. The more the top professions earn, the more the political appointees earns. It then naturally make sense to favour the top 8. This KPI is also not holistic. Too selective. How the lesser mortals are doing is not accounted for. Instead, I think it's better to change the formula peg to the median income of the ENTIRE population regardless of profession. This ensures that the PAs are only rewarded for improving the income of the OVERALL population. There should be an income ceiling of maybe 10-20x of the median income for the entire range of the PAs. If the median income is 3k/mth, then the top PA (President) should not earn more than 20x which is 60k (720k pa) and similar for the lower grades. That amount of income is considered decent. They would be able to afford most luxuries of life. Their children and grandchildren would be well taken care of. What's the point of giving them so much in excess? There's a limit to how much they could and should spend, especially as civil servants. Our President stayed in office for 2 terms. That 10yrs gave him unreachable (to lesser mortal) savings of 25m thereabouts. That's how many lifetime of earnings of the common citizen? Is there a need for so much? How to spend? Imagine MM and PM. No term cap. Moreover, they should be working more for the good of the people than for money. If they are paid more than they need to spend, then bribing them is pretty pointless isn't it? With the current system, I believe majority of the country's millionaires are civil servants. Is this correct? I personally think this is wrong. The wealthiest people in the country should not be civil servants.

  11. July 9, 2008 S'pore should free courts from govt influence: lawyers group SINGAPORE should free its courts from any government influence and elevate human rights standards to international levels, the world's largest legal association said. The International Bar Association's (IBA) human rights arm expressed concern over the limitations of freedom of expression and the independence of Singapore courts in a 72-page report released late in London on Tuesday. 'In particular, democratic debate and media comment are extremely restricted and government officials have initiated numerous successful defamation suits against both political and media critics,' said the association's executive director Mr Mark Ellis. The global legal association noted that while the city-state had a good reputation when adjudicating commercial cases that did not involve members of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), when it came to matters regarding PAP litigants 'there are concerns about an actual or apparent lack of impartiality'. The London-based body of more than 30,000 member lawyers globally also said that while Singapore fared well in commercial and economic rankings, it fared poorly in press freedom rankings, which it said was a concern given that a free press can generate important dialogue on issues. 'Singapore cannot continue to claim that civil and political rights must take a back seat to economic rights, as its economic development is now of the highest order,' the report said. 'The International Bar Association Human Rights Institute strongly encourages Singapore to engage with the international community in a more constructive manner, and to take steps to implement international standards of human rights,' it said. The Singapore government did not immediately comment. Defamation suits Singapore, where the IBA held its annual conference last year, is among the most developed nations in Asia, with the second highest GDP per capita after Japan. However, media and human rights groups such as Amnesty International have criticised the government for restricting freedom of expression and using defamation lawsuits to financially cripple political opponents. In a list of 18 recommendations, the IBA urged the Singapore government to ratify the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ease restrictions on the media and ensure that its courts are free from government influence. IBA executive director said in a statement Singapore should be a leader in human-rights, and its advancement would be complementary to the city-state's future prosperity. The IBA also noted that some publications, including The Economist and the Financial Times, have paid out-of-court settlements to avoid defamation lawsuits. The government says these lawsuits are needed to protect its reputation. The legal body suggested the government set limits on defamation payouts in cases initiated by government officials. At the convention last October, Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said the city-state's citizens were free to read whatever they wanted. He said Singapore was built on the rule of law and did not tolerate corruption, in contrast to the surrounding region, where 'money politics' was a way of life. That meant defamation action may be taken against those who impute dishonesty among government officials, in order to clear any doubts, he said. -- REUTERS, AFP. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_256122.html the IBA will face another defamation suit from MIW... [/color] Let's see if there is any freedom of expression here.... be civil though

  14. With reference to this thread: http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/General_C1...-_Gad._P943322/ Dtvox have suggested that thread starter should 'look after' their own thread. ~ Great suggestion. I sincerely seek your co-operation in 'looking after' those thread which you have started, regardless of where you start it. How you should go about doing it. For example: You started a thread asking for " Carbon Clearing " asking about what chemical to use. Should anyone start to drift and talk about toll charges in Malaysia. As the thread starter, you may want to gently remind that person not to drift in that thread as you want to gather info about the type of chemical to use and not about toll charges. Should you feel that you are too shy or dun know how to go about reminding others, do feel free to drop a pm to any of the mods of that respective folder. No Political Posting. (12 April 07) It seems like there is an increase in Political related posting made in MCF. Please be reminded that this is a Car forum, kindly do not post any political comments in MCF. Any thread/posting found with political comments, will be removed without warning or reminder. Cheers.
