  4. Kia's Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, has been promoted to president from his current executive vice president position. This makes the German the first non-Korean president in the Korean automaker. In addition to Schreyer, there are two other presidents in the company. Schreyer jumped ship from Volkswagen AG to Kia in 2006 when Kia decided to focus on the European market, identifying design as its core growth engine. With Schreyer on board, Kia introduced a new corporate grille known as the 'Tiger Nose' to create a recognisable 'face' for the brand. The first Kia vehicle to bear Schreyer's styling direction is the first generation Kia Forte. Since then, the new corporate grille has been featured from the humble Picanto to the top-of-the-range Quoris luxury saloon. The second generation Forte carries the 'Tiger nose' as well but in a more aggressive form. The 'Tiger nose' grille is now as recognisable to a Kia as the 'Double Kidney' grille is to a BMW. "The promotion shows Kia's key focus areas shifting from production and cost efficiency, which were traditionally considered more important, to design and research and development," said Shin Chung Kwan, an analyst at KB Investment & Securities Co. in Seoul. The second generation Kia Forte

  8. Eric Cantona announces bid for French presidency Eric Cantona, the former Manchester United striker, has said he wants to run in this year's presidential election in France and is trying to gather the signatures needed to do so. The footballer, who would need the backing of 500 elected officials by the end of February to run, has sent a letter to French mayors describing himself as an "engaged citizen" and asking for their support. "This engagement obliges me to speak, more earnestly than usual, but also with a keen sense of my responsibility, at a time when our country faces difficult choices which will be decisive for its future," said the letter. In his letter, printed in the Liberation newspaper, Cantona denounced the limited opportunities for young people in France and social injustices which were "too numerous, too violent, too systematic", the newspaper said. Election candidates will compete in a first round in late April, with the two biggest vote-winners going through to a decisive second round in early May. Socialist candidate Francois Hollande is currently leading President Nicolas Sarkozy in the polls. Even if Cantona were able to get 500 signatures, a difficult task without the backing of a party, he would have virtually no chance of reaching the second round as an individual outsider. It is not the first time Cantona, who earned large sums as a footballer from sponsorship by brands like L'Oreal and Nike, has tried to draw public attention to social inequality. In December 2010, he called on French savers to stage a nationwide bank run by withdrawing their money from financial institutions because of their role in triggering the global financial crisis. Panned by the media as a flop, almost no one in France heeded the call. Cantona was convicted of assault and suspended from playing for four months in January 1995 after launching a "kung fu" kick on a spectator after being sent off. In a press conference later, he said only: "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much."
  9. Latest on the news is that Tony Tan has won the PE and is officially now President Tony Tan. He has won Dr Tan Cheng Bok by a razor thin margin of several thousand votes out of 2.27 million voters. According to earlier unconfirmed reports, Tony Tan and Tan Cheng Bock each had around 35 percent of the vote. Tony Tan gets 35.19 % of valid votes; Tan Cheng Bock gets 34.85%, Tony Tan wins by 7,269 votes (0.34%). OFFICIAL RESULT: Tony Tan 744,397, Tan Cheng Bock 737,128. TJS 529,732. TKL 103,931. The President of Singapore wields powers that allows him direct influence in government entities such as GIC sovereign funds and Temasek Holdings. Despite the win, the thin margin of the ruling party's unofficially endorsed candidate marks the change of the political climate in Singapore where the electorate saw their popular vote fall to a record low of 60% during the May parliamentary elections.

  13. - this relic of malaysia's umno in singapore is imploding again and again. can't even hide contrabrand properly! i think they still attend umno general assemblies up north and cry to their "abang" umno malaysia about discrimination in singapore etc. http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/Singa...-cigarette-raid The president of the Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS), Ali Asjadi, was arrested on Saturday morning following a raid by the Singapore Customs for contraband cigarettes. A Singapore Customs spokesman said three other men were also arrested in the operation along Changi Road, where the PKMS building is located. Singapore Customs seized a "sizeable quantity" of illicit cigarettes. The spokesman said: "As part of its routine operations to stamp out contraband cigarettes, Singapore Customs seized a sizeable quantity of contraband cigarettes along Changi Road on Saturday morning. "As a result of the operation, four men, including one Mr Ali bin Asjadi, have been arrested and charged in court. They are now under remand for Singapore Customs to further conduct its investigations." Ali, who is in his 50s, has been president of Singapore's only Malay-based political party for about a year, said PKMS deputy president Abu Mohamed. The 60-year-old freelance director in an oil services company added that he was unable to comment further until he knew "the precise details" but said he would be calling for an emergency meeting with other members tonight. Mr Abu said that a group of plain clothes Customs officers had visited the party's office within the PKMS building on Saturday at around 11am. They checked the president's office and asked to look at the accounts of the organisation. "If any member - even the president - is engaged in any criminal or unlawful activity, then he will be out of PKMS. I am worried for the organisation, that this is happening," Mr Abu said. 14. Since there has been a lot of controversy about the People's Association (PA) being pro-ruling party and that the PA Chairman is the sitting Prime Minister, can Parliament pass a bill to change the Constitution to allow the Elected President (EP) be the PA Chairman instead? In the first place, PA is supposed to be apolitical & is set up to promote harmonious relations amongst the people and so many are comfortable about the ruling party's PM to be it's Chairman. The latest uproar about a opposition MP having his 7th lunar month celebration invitations retracted because the PA-sanctioned activity did not allow political figures attending these celebrations is a very good example which one may draw conclusions that partisan politics is at play. The purists may come out and argue that no the system is fine and if it ain't broke don't fix it. Besides the EP has already got his hands full dealing with his duties. I beg to differ because our EP as the head of state is supposed to be above politics and is the best person to lead PA such that no one can accuse it being used a political instrument to influence folks on the ground.

  16. Read the link.Late President Benjamin Sheares donated ALL his president pay to charity!!! TKL going to donate 50%? TJS 500k more than enough?? President Benjamin Sheares already donated all his president pay more than 30 years ago!! The best thing is he did not tell the whole world. TCB is correct, to announce donating half the pay even before u are elected as president is another way of buying votes. It is a strategy. But using such low class strategy in Presidential election shows how low the quality of the candidates are. He was chosen by LKY at the prime of his career and he accepted it and being the president, he loss a large chunk of income and yet he still donated ALL his $17,000 salary to charity!! $17,000 in the 70s can easily buy 2 HDB flats. This is what I call a president that wants to serve the people. The country don't build a major bridge and name it after a person for no reason. Not some clowns going around Hi5 with people and also not some clown that keep wanting to hold PAP responsible and keep repeating check and balance. Looks like I got no choice but to cross beside the Palm Tree.

  21. I will generally consider a dual citizen like her to be Singaporean enough but I always thought President's Scholarship is a very symbolic award and a role model for Singaporean students. What does this award mean? She is not even serving military service. I feel we Singaporeans are like that old 46 year old first wife of the government who stuck with them through the hard times when they were poor and now that they are rich and found fancy and young PRC mistresses and is starting to hiam how old and ugly we have become. http://forums.asiaone.com/showthread.php?t=41882
