You can't always get what you want. President Barack Obama said today that he originally wanted his presidential limo to boast a hybrid drivetrain. So what keeps the ruler of the free world from getting what he asks for? In this case, it was the Secret Service. Obama's body guards said that a hybrid engine couldn't produce the kind of power necessary to scoot the massive Cadillac down the road in an emergency situation. That's saying something, considering the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid boasts a V8 with enough power to have a 7,700-pound towing capacity. Part of us thinks it might also be a security concern to have a vehicle that may be more susceptible to electronic interference from nefarious sources, but that's just a guess. No one's exactly sure what the Commander-in-Chief's car has under the hood, but it's a good bet that it has eight cylinders and enough torque to move a mountain of armor plating. We hear it's a diesel and we're guessing it probably nets fuel economy on par with most RVs. Obama's pining for a hybrid limo came to light during a speech about the government's recent purchase of 5,000 of hybrid cars and trucks for federal use. No word on whether or not the executive branch got the General Motors employee discount.

The President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation will address the American public regarding his company's most publicised crisis in recent years. The 53 year-old Akio Toyoda came into his current position during mid-2009. He has been invited by Congressman Ed Towns, D-N.Y, to testify at a congressional committee next week. "I have received Congressman Towns' invitation to testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on February 24 and I accept," Toyoda said in an e-mail statement. "I look forward to speaking directly with Congress and the American people." Toyoda's response is in contrast to his earlier statements that Toyota North America chief Yoshimi Inaba and his staff would handle any US hearings. He indicated that he would support them from behind the scenes. He was quoted as saying: "I trust that our officials in the U.S. will amply answer the questions. We are sending the best people to the hearing, and I hope to back up the efforts from headquarters...We are not covering up anything, and we are not running away from anything." The about-turn is welcome and should boost both investor and public confidence which have been waning since the recall problems concerning sticky accelerator pedals and Prius brakes first came to light. "Now that I have received an official request from the chairman [Towns]," said Toyoda, "I'd like to take advantage of the opportunity. I'd like to cooperate fully and try to explain our situation. The No. 1 thing in my mind is regaining the trust of our customers in terms of the safety of our vehicles."

Barack Obama, car guy From FORTUNE MAGAZINE By Alex Taylor III, senior editor Last Updated: December 31, 2008 Before his presidential campaign, President-elect Obama drove a Chrysler 300C like this one. NEW YORK (Fortune) -- One of the least explored personal sides to our new president is the amount of gasoline in his veins. We know all about his affection for the basketball court and his tendency every now and then to sneak out for a cigarette. But we've heard very little about what drove him to acquire one of the least politically-correct cars on the planet: a Chrysler 300C. With its high torque and horsepower, voracious appetite for fuel and gangsta-car persona, it is hardly the kind of vehicle you'd expect a consensus-building politician to drive. But those are Obama's wheels. Or were. During the campaign he sold the 300C in favor of a hybrid Ford Escape, and as president of the United States, he won't be getting into the driver's seat very often - unless he's at a military base or some other secure location where he can let loose. He'll be spending all his time in the back seat of an armor-plated Cadillac. But let's hope that he doesn't lose any of the love for automobiles that may have attracted him to the Chrysler. Because he's in a position to do more for the auto industry than anyone since Henry Ford or Daimler and Benz. Now that General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) and Chrysler have been temporarily removed from intensive care, courtesy of a federal bailout, Obama will be in charge of the effort to permanently return them to financial health. As such, he could ensure their long-term survival - as long as the market cooperates - or doom them to some interminable government-regulated hell.

At a gathering with singapore's youth at the Istana yesterday, Nathan mixed with his youthful guests and talked about his experiences including his handling of the Laju terrorist incident in 74' which then elicited this response from NUS undergrad Mallory Ho, 21 " I thought of him as James Bond"!! Nathan may then have told her "shaken but not stirred, Moneypenny" lol

Do you agree or he is like planning his "road" to become Singapore's first elect president Monday, October 20, 2008 Right and decent thing to do for your citizens Extracted from: http://comment.straitstimes.com/showthread...?t=14228&page=2 If a war were to start today, the govt will immediately mobilise our NSmen in the country ' s defence, I have no doubt about that. NSmen will be reminded of their pledge to protect the nation and no doubt the PM and his cabinet will go whole hog on national TV to remind NSmen that they would be defending not only the country but their loved ones and remind them of the consequences should the enemy were to overrun this place. But when there is a crisis such as the present when thousands of Singaporeans watch helplessly as their life savings are going to literally disappeared into thin air THE SILENCE OF THE PM AND HIS CABINET IS VERY VERY DEAFENING AND TELLING INDEED! What has happened to all those theories about social, economic, military and psychological defence under the oft-repeated TOTAL DEFENCE concept promulgated by the govt? Are they all merely theories? Intended merely as propaganda to keep Singaporeans in line only? This current financial threat has dealt a massive blow to not only the economic defence but perhaps more importantly, the PSYCHOLOGICAL DEFENCE OF SINGAPOREANS, thousands of whom have been accummulating through several decades of hard toil, sweat and even blood, funds for their retirement and old age, since the govt don ' t believe in welfarism. Didn ' t the govt, esp. the MM, said many many times before that the country ' s reserves is for a rainy day. Hasn ' t it been rainly badly enough on Singaporeans lately? How really bad must things get before Singaporeans may expect the govt to deign it bad ' enough ' to come to their rescue? Perhaps, some mass suicide? It is amazing that while it is all right to dump billions and billions into the BLACK HOLE of the likes of failed/failing American and European financial institutions, the govt seems to deem it fit to watch the unfolding drama and tragedy being played out at Hong Lim Park and in the mass media, with arms folded in apparent disinterest. This it is doing against a global background of countries like Hong Kong underwriting the losses of its citizens caught in this massive fraud. No, not this govt here, it would seems! It would prefer to watch the carnage of its citizens, without even a speck of guilty conscience that the govt, esp. the MAS, has a part to play for the desperate situation the citizens are in because it has failed to be good gatekeepers by allowing such high risk products for sale to innocent citizens whose only fault was to stretch their dollar (so that they might be less reliant on charity in their old age and the country in general). Instead, we see very obvious signs that the govt will be the last among nations to help its citizens AND only if whatever actions it follows will protect its competitiveness, not that it is the right and decent thing to do for your citizens. Are you one of those surveyed? Does it matter to you if Singapore is headed by a female president? Frankly speaking, what powers does a president in Singapore have in the first place? I dun really see him in the papers or on TV often than our PM

'The price of oil will rise again in the coming weeks. We have to follow the evolution of the dollar, because a one per cent fall in the dollar means four dollars more on the price of oil,' Mr Khelil, who is Algeria's minister of energy and mines, told the independent daily. Hmmmm this statement only makes sense for car owners living in the US, but for Singaporeans there should be no increase at all in oil prices as the SGD can buy more USD. Makes sense?

Gone are the days when spore first People elected president fight for singaporeans and end up losing his job.I salute him and he did not think of his pay. Do you all still remember that he found that 5bil is missing and he investigate and lately declare that his health is failing by unknown forces. If he is the president or Prime minister, i do not think that he will make this move pegging to the top earners but reasonable increase. He really lead by example and whatever he does is in the interest of sporeans. Spore start its downturn from then on,the rest, we all know lah.Don't even want to know and remember who is who and what really happen after that. Spore is a unique country which the govt alway say that they are just and transparent but could not account for our $$$$.No report of our reserve and no $$$ to help the poor so thet they increase GST but have $14bil to invest in US banks. many more but too lazy to continue......

Friday, August 25, 2006 OYAMA, Japan (AP) - Toyota says it may delay some models as it works to improve quality control. The automaker's president denies that there's been a decision to delay models across the board, saying development of individual vehicles will be decided on a case-by-case basis. The Japanese automaker is tightening its quality control methods in a campaign to reduce a spate of recalls that risk damaging its reputation. The Wall Street Journal reports that Toyota has considered slowing development of some new models by as much as six months because of the quality problems. In addition, Japanese authorities have launched a criminal investigation into three Toyota officials suspected of failing to do anything about a faulty steering part, which may have caused a 2004 head-on accident that injured five people. Friday, Chinese authorities said Toyota will recall 20,000 Crown sedans made in China because of defective rubber strips that seal the windshields.
