  2. In the olden days, hawkers boiled their soup stock for hours using genuine stuff such as ikan bilis, pork bones and chicken bones. Retail Price Watch Group’s list of ‘Really Worth It’ hawkers confirms that Singaporean gourmands are willing to pay more for good food that’s ‘worth it’ When it comes to hawker food, Singaporeans have no qualms about paying more for quality mee rebus and chicken rice, according to the results of the “Really Worth It!” Hawker List released today (Nov 8) by the Retail Price Watch Group (RPWG). The online list was collated from the results of the RPWG Hawker Hunt, which was conducted on the RPWG Facebook page from Sept 6 to Oct 18. A total of 60 hawkers were nominated and 2,151 votes were cast for hawkers in four categories: Fishball noodles, chicken rice, mee rebus and nasi briyani. Tian Tian Chicken Rice emerged as the overall leader as the most value-for-money stall, followed by Singapore Zam Zam Restaurant’s chicken briyani, mee rebus from Rahim Muslim Food, and Xin Lu Teochew Fishball Noodles. Each stall was also the most popular in their respective food categories. The list also found that taste was the key factor for voters. Of the 60 stalls nominated, the three lowest priced hawkers were not in the upper ranks. With the exception of Xin Lu Teochew Fishball Noodles, the overall most value-for-money hawkers’ prices fell in the middle to high ranges within their own categories. “It is a little surprising that Singaporeans assigned more weight to taste than price when making their evaluation,” noted RPWG Chairman Mr Lee Yi Shyan, who is also the Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and National Development. “I hope this round of consumers’ recommendations forms a good guide to those of us who seek value-for-money food in Singapore. By uncovering popular and good value hawker food around the island, we hope to help consumers stretch their dollar while satisfying their taste buds. “Simultaneously, the List helps to single out hawkers who have worked hard to deliver good value to their customers.” The “Really Worth It!” Hawker List can found on the RPWG’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/RetailPriceWatchGroupSG). Each nominated stall will also be presented with a “Really Worth It!” decal to display on their stall to help the public identify them. The RPWG was set up in February 2011 to keep an eye on excessive price increases of daily necessities and food items, so as to address profiteering, excessive price hikes and anti-competitive practices of businesses in Singapore. Some other sales strategy? Last time their list price much higher but they will give discount like >10K when you buy. At this new price, they still giving discount or that's it and no more discount? Any bros went their showroom recently and what is the real price now? Same as their price in sgcarmart or even lower?

  18. BRUSSELS: The European Commission has carried out surprise inspections at several major oil companies over possible price fixing in breach of EU anti-trust rules. The Commission did not name any of the companies involved in Tuesday's raids but British energy giant BP, Shell and Norway's Statoil said that their offices had been visited. The Commission statement explained that even small distortions of the market could have a "huge impact on the prices of crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels purchases and sales, potentially harming final consumers". In a statement, BP confirmed it "is one of the companies that is subject to an investigation ... We are cooperating fully with the investigation and unable to comment further at this time." A Shell spokesman said: "We can confirm that Shell companies are currently assisting the European Commission in an inquiry into trading activities. Norwegian firm Statoil and Platts, the world's leading oil price reporting agency, also both confirmed they were being investigated. "The suspected violations are related to the Platts' Market-On-Close (MOC) price assessment process, used to report prices in particular for crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels, and may have been ongoing since 2002," said Statoil, which is 67 per cent owned by the Norwegian government. The European Commission said officials "carried out unannounced inspections at the premises of several companies active in and providing services to the crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels sectors. "These inspections took place in two EU member states," a statement said, adding that one country in the European Economic Area (EEA) -- of which Norway is a member -- was also involved. "The Commission has concerns that the companies may have colluded ... to manipulate the published prices for a number of oil and biofuel products," it said. Additionally, the firms "may have prevented others from participating in the price assessment process, with a view to distorting published prices." British motoring groups and politicians lined up to voice their anger at the allegations. David Bizley, technical director of car services company RAC, said the claims were "worrying news for motorists" and vowed his company would campaign for greater transparency in the UK fuel market. Shadow energy and climate change secretary Caroline Flint called the reports "very concerning", which if true, suggested "shocking behaviour" in the oil market. "When the allegations of price fixing in the gas market were made, Labour warned that opaque deals and relying on price reporting agencies left the market vulnerable to abuse. "These latest allegations of price fixing in the oil market raise very similar questions," added the Labour MP. "Consumers need to know that the prices they pay for their energy or petrol are fair, transparent and not being manipulated by traders." Colleague Chris Leslie said any evidence of price fixing would be "a shocking scandal for our financial markets" while Conservative MP Robert Halfon repeated his calls for a full investigation into alleged cartels and market manipulation. "Last year, in a debate that I pressed for, parliament voted unanimously for an investigation into the oil market," he explained. "These latest allegations underline why that must happen urgently. "High oil prices are crushing families across Britain. Motorists are being taken for a very expensive ride." Britain's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) ruled out a probe four months ago, concluding there was "very limited evidence" that pump prices were being manipulated. Former Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman Matthew Oakeshott compared the allegations to the Libor scandal, which resulted in several banks paying out huge settlements over claims they manipulated the key interest rate. Larry Neal, the president of Platts, rejected similar accusations in a letter to the Financial Times earlier this week. "Your comparison of PRA (price reporting agency) activity to Libor is a false one," he said. "While PRAs do obtain information from 'traders who may have a vested interest in moving the markets,' the agencies do not have any such vested interest," he added. "In contrast, our role is providing market transparency." Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/busine...sib/675314.html
  19. Manpower costs the main reason for increase in food price? Really ?. http://www.soshiok.com/multimedia/photos/1999 I would think it's the increase in rent. Why no labour cost ? Due to inflation, everyone deserved a higher salary because of higher cost of living. So it natural to expect labour cost to increase in proportion of inflation. However, why does malls/food stall has their rent increase more than inflation by so much over the years... Actually, every increase in profit didnt not go the owner or those that labor.. But went to the fat bonus of the landlords.. Why is these scholars so blind not to see the real cause of the problem?

  23. googled around, couldn't find COE chart before 2007. I made my own using data from LTA website. (note that data after 2002 are 3 month moving average instead of individual bidding) before plotting the chart, i thought it is normal for COE to be around 15k. to my surprise, the less then 20k COE from 2005~2010 seems to be an abnormality rather then a norm. Just for sharing and give a bit of historical perspective view of COE price. please say "thank TS" if you find this useful, it is not a fun job to do the chart :)
