  1. The Toyota Prius V has been rebadged as the new Daihatsu Mebius in Japan. The move is part of a business collaboration in the environmental technology field between the two companies as agreed in September 2010. Toyota has held 51 percent ownership of Daihatsu since 1998. The Mebius is the second Toyota hybrid car rebadged as a Daihatsu, the first being the Camry hybrid's conversion into the Daihatsu Altis. This can be a bit confusing since Toyota has an Altis model itself. The Prius V and MEbius are identical twins both internally and externally but the Mebius is offered exclusively as a five-seater while the Prius V can be specified with a seven seat arrangement. Like the Prius, the Mebius has a hybrid setup consisting of a 99bhp 1.8-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 136bhp. Average fuel consumption is rated at 3.82 litres/100 km.
  2. Would like to find out how many Prius owners are out there using MCF. Recently book a Prius C and would like to find out more tips and info from the Prius drivers out there.
  3. Am in the market looking for a new car, Prius c for it's fuel economy and the fun, altis for the practical and size. What's your view in this two?
  4. I'm not sure how many have heard of, or are aware of the group 'Consumer Reports' (CR), but for those who aren't, it is basically similar to the character played by Reese Witherspoon in the movie 'This Means War'. Essentially, they are product testers and reviewers and compare consumer products based on results from its in-house testing laboratory. The annual Consumer Reports new car issue, is the magazine's best-seller and influences millions of automobile purchases. It would be interesting to note then, the said publication has negative comments on the 2012 Toyota Prius C in their video review that even urges car shoppers to get a used regular Prius over the new baby model. "It's a much better car overall," says reviewer Mike Quincy in the review. CR claims the Prius C appears cheaper, lackluster, hard plastic, cheap materials, dead steering and slow. This is a total contrast to what the original Prius has received, even becoming the poster boy for Gaia saving enthusiasts. Interestingly in the US Toyota sold 4,782 Prius C models, during the first month alone, outpacing the other Prius variants. The YouTube link for the review is provided below while sgCarMart's take on the car can be read here. What do you guys think are the consumer product testing group too harsh or is sgCarMart too nice? Do you own a car and would like to defend/accept the comments? Shoot out your comments below.
  5. The state of Nevada has approved Google's plan to test its prototype driverless Prius on the infamous Las Vegas Strip and so far, the results have been promising. We know how being in a driverless train feels like, but trains are relatively simple to operate compared to the chaos of driving on roads where imbeciles and drunk bafoons roam. Safer roads According to an article on BBC News, roads will become a safer place. More than 1.2 million people around the world die every year in road accidents and approximately 50 million are injured according to the World Health Organization. I guess having a computer to drive for you will eliminate the need to look at your phone, wondering whether your wife received your message saying you'll be home late and worrying that if she didn't she'd flip out. Having a microchip drive you also prevents you being distracted by the GPS read outs or (if you're a social network freak) Facebook. Whatever it is, the computer will do it for you and you can sit back and enjoy the ride. "Google's car adheres strictly to the speed limit and follows the rules of the road" says Tom Jacobs, a spokesman for the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Who had the privilege of riding shotgun in the Google car. Cars won't speed, they won't crash into each other because they will be able to communicate with one another and sort all the lane changing and slowing down stuff that usually ends up with us humans cursing and swearing at another driver. People will be more productive Well, you won't have to steer or step on the accelerator, so you get to do work. Basically do what you do on a train or a bus and that'll be the same in a driverless car. Fewer traffic jams This was a surprise to me. But apparently the computers will be able to drive the car nearly bumper to bumper and I think that will freak me out more than anything but, yes, fewer traffic jams because cars will be able to regulate speed and distance between one another. But...VIPs still need humans to drive We all know that planes fly on autopilot once reaching cruising altitude, but imagine knowing that your plane is landing or taking off by itself. Most will not will not feel comfortable about that, so when it comes to people with either really deep wallets or immense political power, they'd stick to having a human at the wheel to prevent them from, well, dying.
  6. why is Prius so expensive even in 2nd hand market when the OMV is lower than lots of cars?
  7. Riding on the wave of 'unstoppable' Toyotas is the current generation Prius. Toyota Prius brake complaints start pouring in http://www.worldcarfans.com/110020324372/t...tart-pouring-in With 'PedalGate' sweeping the globe, mounting reports are indicating the Toyota Prius is also affected by unintended acceleration - but faulty pedals and floor mats have nothing to do with it. So far, about 100 complaints (two involving crashes) have been filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In Japan, the transport ministry has logged at least 14 complaints of acceleration-related problems with the Prius. The case getting the most attention is Steve Wozniak's (Apple's co-founder) Prius. During a speech at the Discovery Forum, Wozniak said "I have many models of Prius that got recalled, but I have a new model that didn't get recalled. The new model has an accelerator that goes wild but only under certain conditions of cruise control. And I can repeat it over and over and over again safely." In a later interview with CNET, Wozniak stated "This is software. It's not a bad accelerator pedal. It's very scary, but luckily for me I can hit the brakes." Despite attempting to contact Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for three months, he was unable to get either organization to look for a software-related defect - until now. The U.S. Department of Transportation has finally begun looking into a possible software glitch which could cause the Prius to accelerate unintentionally. According to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, "We're not finished with Toyota and are continuing to review possible defects and monitor the implementation of the recalls." While he didn't elaborate, several government sources have stated the review will include a look into possible electronic problems. Despite the concern, Toyota is down-playing reports about a potential software problem. In an interview with Automotive News, Toyota spokesman John Hanson said "After many years of extensive testing, we've found no evidence of an electronic problem that could have contributed to unwanted acceleration. We've investigated many times and found no evidence to point to." His statement was echoed by Toyota's vice president of quality, Shinichi Sasaki, who added "We have not come across any case in which we have found a malfunction. But if any additional reports arise, we will conduct testing using all technology at our disposal." However, many people aren't buying Toyota's explanation. Consumers have fled Toyota showrooms and the U.S. Congress has called the company to testify before the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee for investigations.
  8. I have ride in a Prius and it is so quiet that it is like riding in a electric golf buggy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prius -------------- Quietness See also: Electric vehicle warning sounds The Wall Street Journal reported in February 2007 on concerns that quiet cars like the Prius may pose a safety risk to those who rely on engine noise to sense the presence or location of moving vehicles.[88] Blind pedestrians are a primary concern, and the National Federation of the Blind advocates audio emitters on hybrid vehicles,[89] but increased risks may also affect sighted pedestrians or bicyclists who are accustomed to aural cues from vehicles. However there is also a lack of aural cues from vehicles that have a conventional internal combustion engine, where engine noise has been reduced by noise-absorbing materials in the engine bay and noise-canceling muffler systems. In July 2007, a spokesman for Toyota said the company is aware of the issue and is studying options.[90] In the USA both state[91] and federal legislation[92] have been proposed, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration held a public hearing.[93] Different groups and companies are looking at solutions.[94][95] In 2010, Toyota released a device for the third-generation Prius meant to alert pedestrians of its proximity.[96] -------------
  9. Yes. A bunch of boffins got together at Toyota and said, "we really need a rollercoaster that's slow and doesn't even carry anyone on it!" What they did is attempt to show how the kinetic energy from braking could be stored as electricity and used for something else in say, an amusement park? In this case, they used the energy stored to power all the lights seen in the video. It looks kind of pointless and it is considering how much effort was taken to rip the Prius apart and rebuild it as a 'rollercoaster' which does 15mph which isnt really 'rollercoaster speeds'. Then again, the idea behind it all is noble; to use the otherwise wasted heat and kinetic energy to power something useful like lights for instance. The idea behind it is great but the final result, not so. I just don't see this happening anywhere else. It will be too expensive and ironically, I feel that the Prius is still more environmentally unfriendly in the long run (as with Rigval's article a few months ago) than say a diesel powered car. All I can say is, nice lights!
  10. Something does not come out of nothing and there is usually a price to pay. Toyota has learned from a recent study that their hybrids, especially the ground breaking (but downright dowdy) Toyota Prius aren't as eco-friendly to manufacture compared to other vehicles. Normal cars somehow make less pollution during the manufacturing process. This comparison is in terms of emissions of nonmethane hydrocarbons and particulates, which is emitted during the process of manufacturing the electric motor, inverters and the nickel metal hydride batteries. In other words, in order to manufacture the Prius, Toyota needs to expand or use more energy to produce that extra electric motor and all of its ancillaries whereas a normal single engined fossil fueled car does not need the extra manufacturing processes. Toyota had found out during these life cycle emissions assessments that when compared to cars in the same class, the Prius emitted more bad stuff during manufacturing but fared better over its lifetime in use. The Prius is better than the average same sized car in terms of CO2, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide over its lifetime. I suppose this meant that Toyota had began its study on the Prius ever since it first started manufacturing it in 1997. A good 13 or so years of information and covers the average 10 year lifespan of any vehicle. Toyota has stated that it will use the findings to ensure that all of its hybrids, which would include the newly launches Lexus hybrid hot hatch, the CT200h F Sport (photo below)
  11. Toyota revealed that it will begin manufacturing the Prius in Thailand come November 2010. The car will be built at the firm's Gateway Plant near Bangkok, where the Corolla, Camry, Camry Hybrid and other models are built. Thailand will be the third country to make Toyota's popular hybrid after Japan and China. The company said the decision was made as part of its effort to further popularize hybrid vehicles worldwide. Toyota Motor Thailand Co. President Kyoichi Tanada commented, "With its excellent environmental performance, design and advanced technologies, we hope the Prius provides even more people in Thailand with the joys of driving." Toyota did not reveal how many Prius vehicles will be built at the Thai plant, but a company spokesman said production is for the local market. However, I won

  14. We've been hearing the rumors for over a year, and it's now looking increasingly likely that Toyota is getting ready to launch a new hybrid minivan that will wear the Prius nameplate. If true, this would be the first completely new vehicle added to the Prius stable, where it would join the well-known hatchback sometime in 2011. According to Reuters (which is citing the Japanese Nikkei), this new Prius hybrid minivan may be the first such vehicle from Toyota equipped with an in-house developed lithium ion battery pack. The three-row vehicle, which we can only presume would also have sliding doors, would potentially seat up to seven people, expanding Toyota's hybrid technology further into the family-use market. No other details are available other than the notion that Toyota would like to keep the price close to that of standard minivans currently on the market. Stay tuned for more as we hear it.
  15. Last month, Toyota recalled 133,000 2010 Prius models due to a braking issue that could cause a momentary loss of stopping power. However, in many of the claims filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicle's cruise control was brought into question, with drivers stating that they had difficulty getting the system to turn off when the brake pedal was depressed. According to Ward's Auto, 11 percent of all 2010 Prius complaints filed with NHTSA cite this issue. Toyota is now starting to look deeper into these complaints, and believes that the majority of them are the result of driver confusion over the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), which is an option on the top-rung Prius V trim. In talking with Ward's, Toyota spokesperson Dave Lee says that drivers are confusing the Prius' adaptive cruise control for unintended acceleration. Lee states that when drivers use the cruise stalk to adjust vehicle speed, the rate of acceleration is much higher than when the gas pedal is pressed
  16. http://jalopnik.com/5491543/bankrupt-runaw...lt-swinger-site Earlier today we broke a story about the San Diego runaway Toyota Prius driver James Sikes recently declaring bankruptcy. Now, a review of records shows a link to a sex site for couples and a series of mysterious thefts. UPDATE! Following up on a tip sent to TTAC, a search of California Business Records shows the company Adutlswinglife LLC is owned by a Mr. James Sikes of Carlsbad, California. The company operates the website AdultSwingLife.com (NSFW), which advertises that it supports "The Adult lifestyle, wife swapping, hook-up, Swinger clubs, adult social club, booty call, Friends with Benefits, NASCA" with webchats, message boards and other services. His bankruptcy also shows the theft of a saxophone, clothes and other items from a car in April of last year for which his insurance paid $7,400. There's also an anonymous tip on the site Hobbub.com claiming items were mysterously lifted from his foreclosed home before the bank took control of the property: A neighbor near Sikes' former home in Atwater mentioned the money problems to FOX40 News, adding, "I'm not surprised [if] he'd try to get money." [...] The Atwater neighbor says Sikes and his wife Patty had a reputation for other reasons. "They might've been in the pornography business," neighbors said. Might've been in the porn business? Isn't it a binary thing? You're in or you're out. Or you're in-and-out and thus in.
  17. http://motoring.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/...309-203454.html Sounds like Hollywood movie, but this is REAL. "...The terrified motorist was helpless as the car hurtled out of control along the road at speeds more than 90 miles per hour. However Sikes was able to call police, and officers using a loudspeaker talked the driver through the process of slowing down by using his emergency brake and then turning off the engine. Police then pulled in front of the car as it decelerated and rolled to a stop and put the rear bumper of the squad car against the front of the Prius...."
  18. The Volkswagen Passat EcoFuel has recently edged out the Toyota Prius for the title of "greenest car in Europe." The International Automobile Federation (FIA) sanctioned the Eco Test that evaluated a number of cars. The winning Passat is powered by a 1.4-liter TSI inline-four fueled by natural gas. VW's TSI engines are turbocharged and direct injected. Both the Passat and Prius scored 92 out of 100 on the test, but the less expensive natural gas fuel system gave the VW the edge. The test evaluated emissions of CO2, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. The EcoFuel TSI engines are available in many of VW's European models including the Golf, Touran and others. With the result of such a test, I wonder if hybrid cars are relevant going forward. They are more expensive and complex to build than a normal car of similar dimensions and engine output. Its resale value could be a question too as I believe that most used car buyers are more comfortable with a 'proper' petrol driven vehicle in terms of reliability. Once again, congratulations to VW!
