  1. Hi all, long time no see and no chat here. Im looking for a spacewagon for the purpose of business and private use. It will driven by a staff most of the time. There are not many Japanese made options out there for preowned. There are the Honda Airwave, Toyota Fielder and Subaru Impreza Wagon. These are small engines. So i wonder how they performed when i load in cartons boxes in them. Are their rear suspension hardy? Do they have sufficient spaces for boxes. Say, 10 to 12 mid size boxes at time. Most of the time, either left empty or 1 to 2 boxes in the boot. Which do you recommend, value for money, less maintenance hassles, ease of access to parts and accessories? Kindly advise me. Thank you very much. Regards,
  2. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/wages-in-private-sector/1137196.html Any bros saw this article...? Just some quick observations... a. I am quite sure I didn't get half of that 5.3%, and so did my whole company on average b. Is the government going to increase costs of living based on such data? ie raise bus fares again c. how did the statistics come about in the first place? Quite frankly I am worried when I see such stats..shows I am way below national average once more..
  3. Two suspected peddlers leaving a store selling contraband cigarettes in Geylang. Both have since been arrested. It is not just police and Customs officers who are on the lookout for cigarette smugglers. Tobacco companies here have also been hiring more private investigators to help tackle a problem which eats into their business. "It is in our interest as a company to understand how cigarettes are being smuggled into and distributed in Singapore," said Mr Ann Hee Kyet, corporate affairs manager of the biggest tobacco company here, Philip Morris Singapore, which distributes brands such as Marlboro and Next. Representatives of the other two major tobacco companies - JT International Tobacco Services and British American Tobacco - made the same point to The Sunday Times. That is where private investigators like John (not his real name), who has been working for tobacco companies over the last decade, come in. Last September, he got a tip-off that a smuggling ring was using a taxi to transport contraband cigarettes here. 5. Any bro know of any recommended private room hotspring in Taipei (Beitou Hot Spring)? This Villa 32 is charging NT $6000 for 3 hours. http://www.villa32.com/frameset-en.htm Most of the hot spring at Beitou are public, but I'm looking for those private hotspring that is attached to your hotel room and no time limit on the usage, that is you can use any time you like. Would also prefer that the hotel is located within 5mins walk to the Xin Beitou Station.
  6. I really doubt... Its personal space, comfort and the control that will be very hard to get through our public transport system. On the contrary, it is the cost$ that will push drivers to give up driving altogether. Two in five basic bus services improved since BSEP launch The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said 248 new buses have been added on the road under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP). That is nearly half of the 550 buses that the government has pledged to add to the public transport system as part of the programme. Under BSEP, aimed at expanding public bus capacity and improving bus service levels, the government will foot the bill of over S$1.1 billion for these 550 buses while public transport operators will pay for another 250 buses. So far, more than S$90 million has been spent. Giving a one-year report on the programme, LTA and public transport operators SBS Transit and SMRT said in total, 111 existing bus services - or two in every five basic bus services - have been enhanced and 14 new bus services introduced. In a joint statement on Monday morning, they indicated these improvements have enhanced the connectivity of Singapore's bus network. In addition, they have shortened waiting times by three to five minutes for some existing bus services. Based on the analysis of ticketing and GPS data, this has reduced the number of bus services with persistent crowding during peak period by about 40 per cent. LTA said the bulk of the remaining buses that the government has agreed to add will be rolled out by the end of 2014 instead of 2016. LTA also said it will be tapping private bus operators further to augment its resources. Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said: "(As a result of the BSEP,) what we have seen therefore, is that there has been a shorter waiting time for commuters, less crowded, and basically a better commuting experience for everybody. "Because we are accelerating the programme, we therefore expect that the expenditure is going to be a bit higher and faster than what we originally envisaged. When we originally put up the S$1.1 billion figure, we did not expect to involve the private operators in such a large way. "So, we've got to look at those figures and after a couple of years, we would be in a much better position to be able to see whether the S$1.1 billion is indeed sufficient to last us for the entire duration of the 10 years." Meanwhile bus service 651, which plies from Jurong West direct to the city and is operated by a private bus operator, was launched on Monday. LTA will also work with private bus operators to operate short services during peak hours. This includes localised routes in estates that take residents to nearby transport nodes. These services will complement the existing feeder bus services operated by the public transport operators. LTA will call a tender for these short services later this year. In addition, two more new services will be implemented to further improve connectivity in areas like Taman Jurong and Bukit Panjang by the end of this year. And nine more new City Direct bus services will be progressively rolled out from January next year. Even though there are more buses on the roads, reactions from commuters have been mixed. One commuter said: "The waiting time is actually quite fast -- it's between two and five minutes sometimes during peak hours. But if it's during non-peak hours, normally it's five to 10 minutes, which is quite reasonable." Another commuter disagreed, and said: "Sometimes you can't even get into the buses because it's jam packed, especially during peak hours." The government will review the Bus Service Enhancement Programme after 2014 to see what other improvements are needed.
  7. I wonder how much it cost to buy a road? Sounds like a good income opportunity if your area has lots of illegal parking.
  8. Got into an accident this morning with a lorry - his fault, minor scrape on the side of my car - he wants to settle privately - question is - can a lorry driver afford it? I'm assuming he thinks he just needs to pay for the dent - which will be like $400 - $500 - but my previous experience when I claimed the other guy's insurance - also need to factor in car rental for two or three days while car is in workshop - which could amount to $1000 (I don't know what the going rate is for car rentals) - so all up might be $1500...not sure if lorry driver can afford this. Should I just go the insurance route?
  9. FORMER People's Action Party Hougang candidate Desmond Choo is leaving the labour movement for the private sector. Mr Choo, 35, is the National Trades Union Congress' (NTUC) deputy director of industrial relations and the National Transport Workers' Union's (NTWU) deputy executive secretary. He will leave NTUC at the end of this month. Yesterday, he told The Straits Times that resigning from the labour movement was not an easy decision and that he remains committed to workers' causes. "But I thought that after spending most of my working life in the civil service and some of it in NTUC, I should get more exposure in the private sector," said the former police scholarship holder who joined NTUC in 2010. He has found a job in the private sector but declined to give more details. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...sector-20130509
  10. Me thinks this is not a good idea. Look at how allowing HDB rental in 2003 has played a part in pushing up HDB prices. Also excessive car sharing may lead to more congestion. Instead of owner driving to office in the morning and back in the evening, car may end up on the road the whole day. To MOD: I post this first hor
  11. Report from CNA : Private Car Rental Scheme may be liberalised By Dylan Loh | Posted: 13 March 2013 1447 hrs SINGAPORE: Car owners may have an easier time renting out their vehicles in future. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will study if the Private Car Rental Scheme can be liberalised. LTA is also looking at other ways to ease the private transport situation as vehicle ownership aspirations remain. Forty-five per cent of Singapore households owned a car in 2012, compared to 38 per cent in 2004. With Singapore's land constraints, the government said the growing trend in car ownership is simply not sustainable. If the Private Car Rental Scheme can be made more flexible, it means Singaporeans will have easier access to renting private transport, without needing to own a car. The aim is to increase the convenience of door-to-door options to get around for family outings, or ferrying elderly parents, for example. While this is one way to manage the private transport situation, the government said the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) system of allocating vehicle ownership will stay. Authorities are doing a longer term study on the practicality of putting aside some COE supply from the upcoming peak expected in the next few years, for the future when supply becomes tighter. Member of Parliament Hri Kumar Nair is one of many who has noted the difficulty in coming up with a fair system to allocate vehicle ownership. "Most people accept the logic in restricting the number of cars on the road in the need to keep traffic smoothing smoothly but no one likes to pay more. As a result, we have heard many suggestions on how to change the system, usually with a view to keeping COE prices low for some," said Mr Hri Kumar. Transport Minister Lui Tuk Yew said the COE system is by no means perfect, but is preferable to a balloting system. "It is a difficult undertaking to try to allocate cars based on needs, such as to raise a family, to ferry elderly family members or for work purposes. Setting aside the likely problems with implementation and loopholes, I think it would be extremely difficult for the government to decide fairly who deserves and needs a car, and who does not," said Mr Lui. To make better use scarce land space for roads, the Kranji and Pan Island Expressway stretch connecting the residential areas in the north to jobs in the west may be where a 'reversible flow' scheme will be implemented. This scheme allows roads heading one way to head the other direction according to demands of peak period travel. - CNA/fa Those who own more than 1 cars can rent it out.......

  15. I was told that nowadays if an accident occur, we shld not settle on the spot even if both parties willing to sign a black n white on the spot tat no reporting is required. My friend told me tat tis will affect my insurance if the other party really decided to report. I think what he is trying to say is that this issue can escalate to a much bigger n serious issue if either party decided to peruse the matter. Thus no matter how small the accident will be, the assessor must come into the picture to act as an eye witness n to access the seriousness of the damage even if is a 5cent coin size paint chip off. Really wana know the fact as don't Wana ended up doing something wrong and end up to my disadvantage. Thks.

  17. what is the penalty for returning? can nego with developer to "offset" (ie: $10K-$20K?) which is the penalty bear by previous buyer if buy a returned home is considered 2nd sales (old shoes) ? >>> sources from ST Buyers return 150 private homes in May Figure a five-year high but spike 'due mostly to April's robust sales, so rate largely stable' By ESTHER TEO PROPERTY REPORTER Private home buyers returned 150 units to developers last month at projects such as Sky Habitat, The Tampines Trilliant and Hillsta - the highest number in at least five years. These units, bought in April, made up 5.7 per cent of the more than 2,600 non-landed homes, including executive condominiums (ECs), sold that month, analysis by property research firm Square Foot Research shows. Despite the high absolute figure for returns, experts say that in percentage terms, the rate is in line with last year's. They add that the spike in absolute numbers is largely due to April's robust sales which had buyers snapping up the most number of units in almost three years.
  18. Hi folks, Anyone here have a private pilot's license? I remember there used to be a youth flying club but dunno much. Read up and happen to find that the Seletar Flying Club offers flying lessons to get a license. I was actually interested in learning but the price is pretty steep, the membership alone is $1K with $100+ every month. Calculated based on the flying rate stated, prepare to spend around 20K before you get your license. :( Can I still fly if I wear glasses? I know Airforce/Airline is a no no but private plane more relaxed right? I know MCF got many rich folks out there... anyone got license? How about plane ownership/maintenance? Get gian to take up, but the one $$$$$
  19. question on pte property buys.. currently have a HDB flat still paying CPF loan, and have stayed more than 5 yrs. if i buy a pte condo now, but with no intention to sell off my HDB flat. Decided to pay the necessary downpayment with a combination of cash and CPF, and pay the remaining 60% via a bank loan. Let's say 4 yrs down the road, i decided to sell my HDB flat, whereby the proceeds will go back to my CPF. At that point of time, will i be able to pay off my bank loan using the CPF proceeds? And if there were to be any unpaid loan balance, i will then pay off with cash or take a new bank loan package? pls advise.

  24. ST Forum Help struggling retirees in private properties PRIVATE property owners, unlike HDB dwellers, are mostly excluded from help programmes and handouts from the Government ('Private home owners' by Mr Tan Guan Rong; Feb 21). While most private property owners are financially better off, it may not be so for seniors or retirees. In my neighbourhood alone, there are two retirees who are siblings and who live in a rundown owner-occupied home they inherited from their parents. The two, a man and his sister, would salvage waste paper and discarded electronic goods to eke out a living. Because of emotional attachment, it is difficult to move out from familiar surroundings, especially as one ages. Selling the property and downgrading is not as simple and straightforward as many make it out to be. That is why the Government should give greater flexibility for retirees to purchase HDB flats to generate a source of steady cash flow from rental payments, provided they have their own funds or can meet the more stringent borrowing requirements for older people without salaries. There are also other similar situations that the Government or institutions can positively discriminate in favour of seniors and retirees. Raymond Koh Bock Swi
