  3. Proton to pick up Subaru's mantle in the WRC? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Before Subaru entered the World Rally Championship in the Nineties, it was little more than an obscure Asian automaker. Though its rallying efforts helped to put it on the map, Subaru has decided to ditch the WRC this season. But another little-known Asian automaker may be ready to pick up what Subaru is throwing away. That company is Malaysian automaker Proton. And it's not as ridiculous as you may think. The state-owned enterprise has a strong customer base in Asia, and is the largest automaker in the Muslim world. Proton also owns Lotus, which brings the parent company a considerably performance engineering knowledge base to tap into. Subaru's former partner Prodrive is looking for a new client. And to cap things off, now unemployed former champion Petter Solberg (who used to drive for Subaru), is now rumored to be signing on to Proton's rally team. Together with motorsport garage MEM, Proton has been busy preparing an S2000-spec rally car based on its Satria Neo hatchback for the lower-level Intercontinental Rally Championship, and if plans to switch the WRC to a modified "S2000+" formula come through, it could pave the way for Proton to mount an assault on the WRC by 2010, as the brand is eager to expand outside its regional market and establish itself in Europe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  4. Hi Fellow bros, Anyone knows where I can find good spare parts shop for Proton? I checked our distributor list http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/LIST_OF_AU...537419/#2537419 but found it's not really updated. Many of the numbers are 7digit. Added a 6 prefix and the call is not correct. Trying to urgently buy a Ignition Distributor for a year 2000 Wira. Found in JB cost around RM500-600. But strangely, I managed to call 1 shop in SG and they quoted me $120? or so. So big diff. Thought Proton parts cheaper in JB? Need to buy it around 9am tomorrow coz I'm going to export it to east msia. My BIL hand carry it back. Any bros can advise? Thanks!

  6. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/05/26/...ysia-Proton.php Malaysian carmaker Proton returns to black, plans first multipurpose vehicle by 2009 KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Malaysia's national carmaker Proton said Monday it plans to launch its first multipurpose vehicle early 2009 after reporting higher-than-expected fourth quarter profits, buoyed by higher sales and a large government grant. Net profit in the quarter through March surged to 236.4 million ringgit (US$74 million;
  7. My friend went to Malacca yesterday. While waiting for traffic light to turn green, one proton (P plate) bang into his backside (Subaru). The proton driver came out of the car and blame my friend why stop his car and asking my friend for compensation! He even threaten to ask his friends to come.. There is another malaysian in my friend car (Subara) called her parents and friends to come over. They negotiated and ask this proton driver to pay for the damage. Proton driver say cannot afford and can only pay 100 ringgit.. In the end, my friend made a police report and will try to claim from insurance. Attached photo

  9. 1. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across a popular Taiwanese car magazine that wrote a test review and compare the mentioned 2 cars. In Taiwan, Ford Focus is a higly regarded car. To bring in a Gen-2 to compare with it, it means the Taiwanese thinks highly of a Proton. In fact, of the past few Taiwanese Magazines I've read so far, the critics and end users are generally pleased with Proton products there. 2. The 2 cars are compared in the following departments and I briefly translated the key points of each: A)Equipment Level No kidding, Gen-2 won here depsite the fact that it was mentioned that although Gen-2 dashboard is plasticky but its dashboard display, layout & sound system are better. Gen-2 has cruise control as default. B)Performance Level Without doubt, Focus won but not by alot due to its heavy body and poor power to weight ratio. When in motion after a 0-100Km/h sprint, to accelerate from the next 0~400m, Focus is 18.3 secs and Proton is 18.7secs, so not much difference between a Duratec 1.8L and 1.6L Campro engine. C) Handling Although Focus excels in handling but owning to high CG of its tall body, it is less precise in cornering though stability is not compromised. A Gen-2 is about 1.2 ton but its has a much lower CG, outstanding chassis, very precise in cornering and it is a fun car to be in control and to be driven. D) Maintenance Here they talked about ease and cost of maintenance. Ford being a more established brand there has clear advantage over a Proton. E) Conclusion Performance and Handling wise, both cars are at par. Focus does not have an upper hand in the performance band due to its poor power to weight ratio. Both have excellent chassis and built, Gen-2 steering precision is highly commendable. 3. In the end, the editor/tester choice is Ford Focus. If a Ford Focus 1.6L is in the review, do you think it will be torn by a Gen-2? What do you guys think? Regards,

  11. New car boosts M'sia's Proton Sun, Sep 09, 2007 AFP KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9, 2007 (AFP) - Malaysian automaker Proton's latest car Persona has become its fastest-selling model from the last two decades, boosting the troubled company, a report said Sunday. Since its launch in the middle of last month, some 14,000 bookings have been placed for the four-door saloon, the New Sunday Times newspaper said. "So far in terms of response, it has beaten all other models (in Proton's stable). The figure of 14,000 is a lot," Syed Zainal Abidin, Proton Holdings Bhd's managing director, was quoted as saying by the daily. The Persona, which replaced the 14-year old Wira model, has been touted as the car that will change Proton's fortunes. But it faces stiff competition from top sellers like Perodua's Myvi, the Toyota Vios and the Honda City, which are in demand and command a better resale value. The Persona is the fifth new model launched since 2000. It joins a stable that includes the Waja, the Savvy, the Satria Neo and the Gen-2. Proton has been criticised for a lack of enough new models and poor quality. The firm last year lost its status as Malaysia's biggest-selling automaker to homegrown rival Perodua. Proton, launched in the mid-1980s to showcase Malaysia's manufacturing ability, has been unable to cope with a wave of competition since the government began cutting protectionist measures several years ago. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi recently said that Volkswagen was studying Proton for a possible strategic tie-up that could revitalise the Malaysian carmaker. For Proton, a deal is expected to boost its efforts to reclaim the top spot in the domestic car market and help it get a foothold in the lucrative European market.

  16. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=206...dU&refer=europe Proton Falls on Loss; Volkswagen Alliance Talks End (Update4) By Angus Whitley and Stephanie Phang June 1 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of Proton Holdings Bhd., Malaysia's biggest automaker, fell after the government said Volkswagen AG dropped plans to buy a stake and the Southeast Asian carmaker posted its first annual loss in at least 17 years. Proton stock, down 20 percent this year, fell as much as 3.7 percent in Kuala Lumpur today after the state-run automaker yesterday reported a loss of 591.4 million ringgit ($174 million) for the 12 months ended March 31. Volkswagen, Europe's biggest automaker, no longer wants a stake in Proton, Malaysia's Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop told reporters today. The national carmaker, which a decade ago sold six out of 10 cars in Malaysia, this year held alliance talks with General Motors Corp. after losing half its market share to competitors. The government, still considering a technical partnership with Volkswagen, won't bail out the company and will decide the fate of the maker of Waja cars within three months. "The decision has to made on a business basis, on a commercial basis -- no politics,'' said Tan Teng Boo, who oversees about $177 million of assets at Capital Dynamics Asset Management in Kuala Lumpur. "Whether it's cutting jobs, getting a partner, chopping heads, we have to do whatever it is to make it a viable business entity.'' Shares of Shah Alam, Malaysia-based Proton dropped as much as 20 sen to 5.15 ringgit and traded at 5.30 ringgit at 12:23 p.m., valuing the company at 2.91 billion ringgit. 'Disappointing' Malaysia's government, which controls Proton through a 43 percent stake held by state investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd., has been searching for a partner for the carmaker since an alliance with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. ended in 2004. The government missed a self-imposed March deadline to strike an alliance for Proton. "It's disappointing,'' said Wan Azhar Mustapha, an analyst at OSK Research Sdn. in Kuala Lumpur, with a "neutral'' rating on Proton stock. "It could be another lengthy wait.'' Proton, set up in 1983 by then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to promote Malaysian manufacturing, will have to turn to other carmakers, Nor said today. The government hasn't explained why it missed the deadline to find a partner for Proton, the maker of Waja sedans. "Volkswagen is no longer interested from the equity point of view,'' he said. "We will have to look for others to see who are interested and how we do the planning. The government will consider anything.'' 'Challenging' Proton's loss last year compares with a 46.4 million- ringgit profit a year earlier. It also had a fourth-quarter loss of 913,000 ringgit. This year will be "challenging,'' the state-owned automaker said after posting a 40 percent decline in annual car sales. Rob Leggat, the Asia Pacific spokesman for Detroit-based General Motors, the world's largest carmaker, didn't answer phone calls made to his cell phone today. The world's biggest automaker is "still interested'' in an alliance, he said May 18. Leggat called the discussions with Proton "preliminary,'' more than four months after Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner said talks were at an "early'' stage. Proton's market share in Malaysia fell to 32 percent in 2006 from 40 percent a year earlier, as it lost market share to Toyota Motor Corp. Its cash on hand fell 34 percent in the 12 months to March 31 to 461 million ringgit. To contact the reporter on this story: Angus Whitley in Kuala Lumpur at [email protected]

  20. the new Vios rear lamp clusters arrangements are similar to Proton Waja. Even down to the white case blinkers and reverse lamps. Furthermore it is the ugliest part of Waja they resembles -the rear. Are Toyota really so lack of ideas and inspiration?
