  1. It is something i have thought so for some time - that these civil servants that are in contact with the public never apologise to the public even though they have made a mistake. The impression was reinforced recently when even after i highlight the glaring typo error this officer from particular stat board made on my surname, the reply letter did not carry any apology. Their typo error i highlighted was conveniently ignored. The letter instead carry a condescending tone on the other issues discussed. oh, so high and almighty, huh?

  3. Civil servants shd have better work-life balance since usual working hrs is from 9 am to 5 pm? so is this still required ? By Dominique Loh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 24 July 2007 1723 hrs Photos 1 of 1 SINGAPORE: Civil servants can look forward to a better work-life balance. An advocate and ambassador will be appointed in every public sector agency to help find the middle ground between the two worlds. The "happy worker is a good worker" mantra is now being fully embraced by the government. And it is going beyond its five-day work week policy introduced three years ago. Teo Chee Hean, Defence Minister and Minister In Charge of Civil Service, said: "The Work-life Advocate will by its very name be a champion for work-life and pro-family measures. "He will take steps to ensure that work-life policies are in place, and more importantly that these policies work for the employees as well as the organisation. "To signal the government's commitment, the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry will be the Work-Life Advocate." Said Sim Gim Guan, Work-Life Advocate, Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts, "There are many aspects, depending on which stage they're in, especially for the new grads who are joining us. "One of the things that we want to look at is providing opportunities for them to socialise, within the ministry as well as the rest of the stat boards." International human resource experts say there are several emerging trends when it comes to work-life balance. The first is the aging workforce. This is a global trend, not unique to just Singapore. Here, Singapore scores well for its policies in hiring older workers. The second is the increasing role of women in the workplace. The Employer Alliance, a network of companies committed to enhancing work-life integration, notes more businesses have taken the lead to make the work environment more pro-family. Men are now also demanding such policies. Having these policies means a more competitive edge. Said Claire Chiang, Chairperson, Employer Alliance, "As a parent, they are worried. So they would like, maybe, a work design, where they can have some hours at work, some hours at home, or they can work at home. "This way, they can give the best to both and it is possible with enabling technology. Companies have shown such examples. They have not had a drop in productivity, but have in fact shown overall enhancement of work performance." "One thing that Singapore can learn... look at the European Union, the US experience, other countries and look at what is the relationship between individual businesses and what the government can set the pace for," said Arlene Johnson, Vice President, WFD Consulting. HR experts say there are 25 years worth of research in work-life balance that Singapore can tap into, when implementing the many options available. - CNA/yy

  6. While driving sometimes we encounter all sorts of people. Once in a while we may encounter some unpleasent drivers . Public transport drivers (taxi, bus drivers) are more often on the road than average road users who drive only to and from work place. Do you think they should have better manners and patience?
  7. Source Link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070103/ap_on_..._global_warming Wed Jan 3, 2:15 PM ET WASHINGTON - ExxonMobil Corp. gave $16 million to 43 ideological groups between 1998 and 2005 in a coordinated effort to mislead the public by discrediting the science behind global warming, the Union of Concerned Scientists asserted Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT The report by the science-based nonprofit advocacy group mirrors similar claims by Britain's leading scientific academy. Last September, The Royal Society wrote the oil company asking it to halt support for groups that "misrepresented the science of climate change." ExxonMobil did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the scientific advocacy group's report. Many scientists say accumulating carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases from tailpipes and smokestacks are warming the atmosphere like a greenhouse, melting Arctic sea ice, alpine glaciers and disturbing the lives of animals and plants. ExxonMobil lists on its Web site nearly $133 million in 2005 contributions globally, including $6.8 million for "public information and policy research" distributed to more than 140 think-tanks, universities, foundations, associations and other groups. Some of those have publicly disputed the link between greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. But in September, the company said in response to the Royal Society that it funded groups which research "significant policy issues and promote informed discussion on issues of direct relevance to the company." It said the groups do not speak for the company. Alden Meyer, the Union of Concerned Scientists' strategy and policy director, said in a teleconference that ExxonMobil based its tactics on those of tobacco companies, spreading uncertainty by misrepresenting peer-reviewed scientific studies or cherry-picking facts. Dr. James McCarthy, a professor at Harvard University, said the company has sought to "create the illusion of a vigorous debate" about global warming.
  8. I have been selected for the above challenge. I have since changed my wheels to the original 13' 155/70 configuration. I think I am more for the 3 tanks of petrol than winning, cos I got to be practical... I need my car for work purposes. Anyway, anyone also got selected? I was getting 14-15km/litre before the wheel switch, so I am expecting 16km/litre and up during this period of time. Vincent Updated on 23rd Oct at 3:20am... All thanks to Azlan's posting on the Australian (who drove to Genting and back). Follow his driving tips, it's the way to go! Before today, I've been doubting a fella club member's claim of "230km with the needle only touching 3/4 mark" on his Picanto (I have since exceed around 50km of his). All is about to change for all KIA drivers and of course, all drivers that want good FC. Please read the article posted up by Azlan on the Australian driver on Page Two of this post. http://sgkiaclub.proboards27.com/index.cgi...8328293&start=0 Being conservative, I would like to believe, a rough estimation of the effective FC of our Picanto would be around 19km/litre with SAVVY driving techniques! Vincent
