  1. FOUR elderly women suffered deep cuts, fractures and bruises at Punggol Plaza yesterday morning when the handrail of the escalator they were on suddenly stopped moving. The women, in their 70s and 80s, were just three steps from the top. As they were clutching on to the handrails, they lost their balance and fell backwards. Two ended up in a heap at the foot of the escalator, while the other two landed on the steps. Madam Kiong Mok Lan, 76, who was at the rear of the group, suffered the worst injuries. She had tried to put her hands out to stop the others from falling onto her, but the slim-built woman was unable to withstand their weight. She landed face down and fractured her left cheekbone, right hand and left leg. Her spectacles also broke, and her left eye was swollen and bruised. All the women suffered bruises and long scratches down their backs caused by the escalator's jagged metal edges. One of them, Madam Liew Poh Chan, 72, had deep cuts on both shins and was bleeding profusely. The women were taken to Changi General Hospital by ambulance, and later discharged. Madam Kiong was heading for breakfast at the mall at about 9am with her daughter-in-law's parents - Mr Yap Ah Kow, 77, and Madam Hoh Peck Tau, 72, - as well as family friends Madam Cheong Tai, 81, and Madam Liew. Mr Yap, Madam Hoh and Madam Cheong are Malaysians who came here for a holiday last Friday and were scheduled to go home today. The group had planned to visit Resorts World Sentosa after breakfast. Madam Kiong's daughter-in-law, Mrs Wendy Lim, 43, was also on the escalator, which connects the basement to the first floor. But the housewife and her father, Mr Yap, were unhurt. Career counsellor Gilbert Goh, who witnessed the incident, said he was having breakfast at a fast-food restaurant near the escalator when he heard something that 'sounded like thunder'. When he rushed out to help, he saw the four women sprawled along the escalator. 'I got a shock,' said Mr Goh, 49, a member of the opposition National Solidarity Party who had contested in the recent general election in Tampines GRC. When The Straits Times spoke to them at the hospital later, the women appeared shaken and tired. But they grew agitated when recounting the accident. Madam Hoh claimed one of the mall management officers said it happened because the women became giddy. 'She said that we are old and fell because we were feeling giddy. How is it possible that all four of us suffer from giddiness at the same time?' she said in Mandarin. Her son-in-law Andy Lim, 46, rushed to the mall after his wife told him what had happened, and asked a mall employee to test the escalator twice. Both times, he said, the handrail stopped intermittently. Mr Lim, who works in a training company, said it was 'very irresponsible' of the management to dismiss the incident as a minor one. When The Straits Times contacted the management office, an officer at first said what happened was 'normal' and just 'a big hoo-ha'. Another employee said the mall had never received any public feedback about the escalator being faulty. Yesterday afternoon, the escalator was cordoned off and inspected by workmen from a repair company. The mall said the escalators are maintained every month. Several shoppers and shop owners claimed that the particular escalator was often problematic. One shop owner, who has been there for seven years, said incidents are common. The Straits Times understands that the mall management has reported the incident to its insurance company. A check with several malls found that most service their escalators every month. VivoCity, for example, also deploys its technicians to check on escalators when it gets complaints. Faulty escalators are cordoned off and signs put up to inform shoppers they are being maintained, said a spokesman. Mr Lionel Tan, owner of FB Industries, a company which installs and maintains lifts and escalators, said accidents on escalators are common. He said escalators can stop moving suddenly when the safety switches are activated by users who stand too closely to the sides. But he said it is rare for the handrail to stop moving.

  3. HELP! TOILET BOWL EXPLODED WITH SHIT IN MY PUNGGOL EAST FLAT! Dear A.S.S., Look at this shitty situation! One weekend I came home with my familly and I had to use the toilet urgently. So I went in and relieved myself. After that, I flushed. To my horror, the flush not only didn't work, it started to overflow. AND IT DIDN'T STOP OVERFLOWING. I had to run out of the toilet and try to turn off the water mains in my house, but it still didn't stop. Soon the entire house was filled with disgusting shit water. I had to ask my family to stay over at my in-laws place while i waited for the PUB and f**king slow HDB to show up and assess the damage. You can see the damage for yourself. I even saw bits of carrots and char siew floating around in the waste. 4. A 31-year old Singaporean driver had two police vehicles hot on his wheels in a 15km high-speed chase on Monday night, which spanned from around Punggol West to Shenton Way. He was eventually nabbed for driving while under disqualification, and for his rash act. The police had been conducting an operation along the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) when the man's car whizzed past. He was found to be speeding, but did not stop when signalled to do so by the police. Instead, he stepped on the gas and sped off. The police began their pursuit, which started along the KPE around Punggol West and moved to the East Coast Parkway (ECP). The chase ended after the car turned into a carpark along Prince Edward Road around Shenton Way, and the driver found himself cornered by the two police vehicles. His car finally came to a halt after colliding with the police car. Police investigations are ongoing Bugger. Trying to mess with Mata S80

  6. I'm been looking at this project and considering buying one unit aiming for the bigger or biggest unit there. Still got some unsold ones. Any advice on this? I know I no money, can't afford a real private condo. Anyway, if i want to really buy this, it will be an appeal case for me. I got some things that exceeds the requirements. Never knew that EC is so troublesome...... I need to know the peak traffic condition from Pungool to Town. there are 3 routes, as far as i know: TPE to ECP, TPE to KPE and TPE to CTE How's the travelling experience of taking MRT during peak hour? I heard that there are plane noise over Sengkang and Punggol. Will this project be affected by this noise too?
  7. Hi all, Not sure if some kind souls can help with starting a new thread under "General" as i have not reach 25 posts yet. I had a accident on the 4th April around 1040 pm, Along Punggol Road slip road towards Jalan Kayu/ SLE/CTE. I was on the extreme left filter lane (there were 2 lanes), and after checking clear i proceeded. Suddenly a cyclist (Foreign worker , dark skinned either indian or bangadeshi, wearing a black tshirt with dark colored bottoms ) cycled acrossed the pedestrian crossing without checking. He was going at a fast speed, cycling across and i could not react in time. Jammed brakes but still hit the rear wheel of the bicycle. He fell and i believe sustained some injuries towards his wrist and foot. I dialed for police and ambulance , statements were given and the case is still pending. Would anyone happen to see the accident? I have been prowling the net to search for other such incidents, however, all pointed to the fault of the driver. Would really appreciate any advice from the seniors here. http://injury.findlaw.com/car-accidents/bi...-accidents.html http://srsc.org.sg/advisories/cyclists-bic...fety-accidents/ There are some articles which states that the cyclist should dismount before proceeding , however, i believe the TP would be aware of these rules and regulations as well.

  11. Any thoughts? The President of Singapore, Tony Tan, has issued a writ of election for Punggol East constituency with Nomination Day being next Wednesday, the16th of January. If more than one candidate is nominated, Polling Day will take place later this month on the 26th of January. The Punggol East seat was left vacant after MP Michael Palmer stepped down due to an extra-marital affair last month. Pasir Ris-Punggol MP, Teo Ser Luck, has been standing in as caretaker MP in recent weeks. PM Lee said in a statement on Wednesday that he advised the President to call the by-election quickly as it was important that Punggol residents "can have their own MP in Parliament" and because of a "busy national agenda this year". "The White Paper on Population will soon be debated in Parliament. Budget 2013 is around the corner. The Our Singapore Conversation is translating the views of citizens into programmes to improve our lives," he added. The single-seat constituency is expected to be hotly contested with as many as five parties -- including the Workers' Party, Singapore Democratic Party, the Singapore Democratic Alliance and even the Reform Party -- expressing interest in contesting the by-election in recent weeks. On Tuesday, a surprise candidate, 40-year-old surgeon, Dr Koh Poh Koon, may have emerged as the People's Action Party (PAP) choice, after he was seen accompanying Teo during an Meet-the-People session. This is the second by-election is as many years, after Hougang also held a by-election last year, which Workers' Party member Png Eng Huat won decisively over PAP candidate Desmond Choo. But this time around, Punggol East is seen as a stronghold for the PAP, going by the last general election results in May 2011 when Palmer defeated WP candidate, Lee Li Lian, by a convincing 54.5 percent to 41 percent of votes. A third candidate, Singapore Democratic Alliance's Desmond Lim received 4.4 percent of votes. However, analysts Yahoo! Singapore spoke to last month said that if the contest were to be a straight fight between the WP and PAP, the former could be seen as favourites. "This is a competitive seat with a three-corner fight last round. A one-on-one contest will make this a potentially winnable seat for the opposition," said Bridget Welsh, associate professor in Political Science at Singapore Management University (SMU). Meanwhile, Punngol-East resident Syed Muhammad, 25, welcomed the possibility of a multi-party contest. "I believe that it is a good idea to let the 5 parties compete as our PM mentioned in his statement he wants us (residents) to vote for the best MP to represent us. By having as many as five parties contest, I believe residents will be able to wisely consider who is best suited for the job," he said. Another resident, Nadh, a 25-year-old freelance designer, welcomed the timing of the by-election. "I like how they are acting fast to get a replacement for Palmer. I don't think it's too rushed because residents here just want a fast solution," he said. 16. SINGAPORE: A man was sentenced on Wednesday to one week's jail and fined S$1,000 for failing to keep a proper lookout while driving, resulting in the death of a five-year-old girl in 2009. Zhao Linqian was on her way to Punggol Plaza on 1 December 2009 for her evening piano lesson when a speeding car driven by Tijan Syafiq bin Selamat fatally knocked her down. The accident threw the girl more than 40 metres away, along Punggol Field Road. On that day, the girl and her grandfather were standing at the road kerb waiting to cross the road. The court heard Tijan Syafiq's illegally-modified car was approaching at more than 70 kilometres per hour, above the speed limit of 50km/hr. The girl then suddenly let go of her grandfather's hand and started crossing the two-lane road. Her grandfather was unable to stop her in time. Tijan Syafiq's car knocked into her the moment she stepped onto the right lane. Investigation revealed the 29-year-old driver had not only failed to keep a proper lookout while driving, but had also suddenly accelerated prior to the accident. Deputy Public Prosecutor Toh Puay San noted that the girl, with her light-coloured clothing, would have been visible even at her height of 1.02 metres, if Tijan Syafiq had kept a proper lookout. Tijan Syafiq, who has a two-year-old son and whose wife is pregnant, will also have his licence revoked for five years. He is also said to be suffering from "recurrent nightmares" of the incident, according to a psychiatric report. - CNA/wk/sf Wished he had modded the brakes instead, maybe the tragedy might have been avoided.

This stretch of road had seen quite a number of accidents and yet nothing is done to curb speeding along this straight road all the way from Sengkang East Road. The previous accident happened a few months back where a taxi was rear ended and the boot almost flatten.
