  1. http://www.------.com/news/news.php?newsid=5609 Volkswagen is behind both Citroen and Peugeot! BMW and Mercedes-Benz performed worse... This should erase the fears of people who want a French car but are unsure about reliability issues (just don't get that Renault). Japanese and Koreans are still the best... brand new Elantra drivers can now have something to rejoice for not choosing the new Jetta!

    Heart or Head?

Broadly speaking, there are cars that appeal to our hearts and cars that appeal to our heads. Cars that appeal to hearts tug at our heartstrings and incite a lust/infatuation that borders on the irrational. The classic example of such cars have to be Alfa Romeos. For generations, Alfa has churned out cars that sent grown men (and women) falling head over heels. Despite the occasional tantrum, owners (or ex owners) still think the world of their Alfas. On the other hand, we have cars that we know check all the right boxes when it comes to practicality. They almost never break down. They are fuss free to maintain, reasonably priced (well relative to Singapore standards), have a big boot, sip fuel ... Well, you get the idea. These are cars designed to tug at our brains or heads. They are the logical choice. For a long while, Toyotas dominated this class though we see the Korean car manufacturers chipping away at its dominance today. And this brings me to the conundrum plaguing me today - what is a young (relatively, speaking) driving enthusiast on a young man's budget who just sold off his ride and is in the market for his next ride to do? Heart or head? Or is there a way to get a little bit of both? Part of me really wishes to splash out the cash on the car I fell in love with (yes, it is an Alfa). But my saner side questions if I can put up with any niggles. Reliability may have been improved in recent years, but it is likely to be a slight distance away from the Japanese marques I have been used to. And let's not even talk about the horror stories that friends have been passing along about their parents' Alfas. They are like a bucket of ice cold water extinguishing my passion for all things associated with the Serpent crest. Not to mention, it does require a rather hefty financial outlay for someone at my stage in life. And then there is the contender to the Alfa. Another equally attractive car (to me) that speaks to the Beng in me. Prices are a lot less steep but I am sure the worries are no fewer. I speak of the almost legendary EG and EK Honda Civics. The same old cautions are administered in large doses. Reliability, worries over accident history, the inevitable problems with driving cars that are more than 10 years old. The list is long. Once again, my saner side is screaming and telling me NO. On the other side, these two cars face a myriad of competitors. I have test driven bread and butter cars from all major Japanese and Korean marques. Yes, they are within budget and yes, reliability is not such an issue. But if I bought any one of them, I would always have the niggling thought that I was settling. They would never be my first choice. And as each COE bidding passes, I am still unable to make up my mind and I remain currently car-less and hopeful for that one car that could be the perfect compromise of both heart and head. Any suggestions?
  5. Hi all, i like the shape and ride of the peugeot 307 and intend to buy one. However i read on reviews in UK that this car is a lemon, and breaks down easily. Is this true? Any owners to verify, thanks.
  6. anyone today kenah the jam at PIE -> CHANGI AIRPORT at exactly 5.45pm just before the BKE exit? I was a few cars behind the DARK GREEN W210 MERCEDES BENZ who freaking broke down on lane 2 right in the middle of the peak hour jam, creating a even jammer jam. well done u cockster, u even tried to filter to lane 3 with no power and hazard light on, luckily your car stopped before u could enter lane 3, because then u will be farking blocking lane 2 AND 3 in fact i have never seen W124 MERCEDES E CLASS ever break down before. no money drive merc dont force yourself drive such an old merc. rather u use the money get a new jap car. i never realise the importance of reliability until today, when i can feel the frustration of all the drivers just trying to GET HOME. no one like to be stuck in jam, everyone wants to go home, to eat their dinner, to play with their children, to hug their wifey, to feed their pets. i will service my car regularly so that i will never break down during peak hour and delay the lives of all the other road users just trying to get home to rest after a long day at work. i pledge to do everything within my effort never to contribute to traffic jams.
  7. Seems like Toyota is not the most reliable car in the world, check out the report below conducted by Kia in the USA and UK. [/color] Mazda rank No. 1 position and Kia is ranked No. 5 above Lexus and Nissan! (SEOUL) January 25, 2007 -- Kia vehicles have won a top place in one of the world
  8. Heard about the Astra MTA (manual transmission auto) gearbox having some problems with either hardware (actuator) or software related....... even for pretty new cars! http://groups.msn.com/SingaporeOpelOwner/a...555233448083380 i knew the earlier Corsa had problems with the gearbox, but didn't expect it in the new Astra. It doesn't happen to the fully auto 1.8 though. also heard that the Selespeed has reliability problems.... Any feedback? Are such gearbox unreliable and it is better for us to stick to fully manual or fully auto/tiptronic ?
  9. Hi Zafi owners, i am thinking of buying a second hand Zafi. But heard that there is some minor problem here and there and parts are really expensive. Can some owners help? What I heard is engine fail to start at time becoz of ECU software. Need to take out battery let it reset then the car can move could be immobiliser. other things is overheating problem and plastic on the dashboard seems to deform. Could this be older model problem. Even though there are this feedbck, but i am still keen on this car as I like it as a mid size MPV.
  10. Straits Times, 3 March 2005 GENEVA - BMW chief executive Helmut Panke has admitted that quality at the German luxury carmaker is failing to meet its expectations, and has pledged to regain a position in the top three most reliable manufacturers. German carmakers, once renowned for their high quality, have seen their cars become more prone to breakdowns as the electronic systems used in cars grow increasingly complicated, with Mercedes particularly badly affected. However, BMW has also seen its reputation slide and was last year ranked 13th among 37 manufacturers for reliability and 12th for initial quality, in an influential study by JD Power. 'I admit that we're not where we want to be,' Dr Panke said in an interview. 'We need to be in the top three for both quality and reliability. Position number eight or nine is not good enough.' But he added that improving that position was not a strategic goal. BMW's 7-series was last year ranked as the worst European car for reliability by Consumer Reports in the United States. Asian carmakers dominate the reliability stakes with Lexus at the head, but mass-market models such as Hyundai rank higher than BMW or Mercedes, which fell to 28th place. Dr Panke said he expected Lexus, made by Toyota, to grow increasingly aggressive in Europe as it tried to break into the market. His comments came as BMW unveiled the latest two models as part of an ambitious programme to branch out from its traditional three products, the 3-, 5- and 7-series. He told a press conference that BMW would develop a multi-purpose vehicle, or what many see as a people carrier, as well as a surprise new model. This would combine the appeal of a coupe with the raised seating position more associated with sports utility vehicles. BMW officials admitted the announcement would come as a surprise but said it was designed to show investors that the company's model offensive had not ground to a halt after the recent launches of its 6-series coupe, 1-series hatchback and Z4 convertible. -- FINANCIAL TIMES

  14. Hi I am in the process of considering hyundai matrix. However was caution by some people about the reliability of hyundai engine. One of my friends said that hyundai engine tends to develope problem after 2-3 years. And he recommended to sell the car after 3 years. Personally I am looking for car that can last me about 5-7 years. Me not a sales person, just a car to get work and bring my family out. Hyundai matrix seems to be preferred choice for me. I'm fully aware of the fuel comsumption. All matrixian out there, any comments? Would appreciate frank comment please. For all i know, Matrix hit Singapore in 2001. So now is 2004. Any problem with the engine?
