  7. I did not know ICA celebrate April's Fools so early …. ICA says paying for ICs brings “a stronger sense of pride and ownership” but netizens feel differently After journalist Bertha Henson wrote a forum letter questioning, “Why charge Singaporeans for new ICs?”, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) responded saying that they “believe that a system where the applicant pays a small sum is better: It brings a stronger sense of pride and ownership of the card”. ICA's statement drew mixed reactions from netizens, with some finding the fee completely unnecessary, much like Henson. In her letter, Henson wrote that she agreed with and saw the “logic of this (changing her IC) as no one would be able to recognise me from my IC photograph”. However, she adds, “As a Singaporean who has never had to pay for her IC in her life, I was flabbergasted. For me, it’s not a question of affordability. It is about what this payment smacks of — a transaction to re-affirm your citizenship”. She wrote, “ICA said that the cost is subsidised for citizens, but my question is why a fee should even be levied for a replacement card”. Concluding her letter, Henson said, “I want my new IC to be a celebration of my citizenship, something I will be happy to have and to hold. Not something I paid S$10 for”. Replying to Henson, ICA responded saying, “The cost of replacing an NRIC is about S$60. Citizens pay S$10 and the balance of S$50 is subsidised. PRs pay a higher fee of S$50. "These fees have been charged and unchanged since 2000. The change is that re-registration is now also required at age 55. This has been the case since Jan 1, 2017." They add, “Ms Henson wants the whole sum to be subsidised. That is possible, but in effect, it means the taxpayer in general would pay the full sum, as opposed to S$50. The applicant would pay nothing, as opposed to S$10”. The line in their letter that proved to be controversial was when they wrote, “We believe that a system where the applicant pays a small sum is better: It brings a stronger sense of pride and ownership of the card. The S$10 sum is very manageable for most people”. Netizens came with mixed reactions as some felt that having to pay the S$10, though a small amount felt to them like putting a price on their citizenship. Conversely, others felt that their IC was a part of their identity and that a small fee was a very affordable price to pay.
  8. I got this cheap water filter system from MY. It has a dome ceramic on top, the some soil and gravel in the tube, and bottom of the filter is some volcanic rocks. You pour the tap water on top and the water will slowly drip downwards. There's the plastic tap for you to push to dispense the water for drinking like those we see at those normal bottled water drinking dispenser. Where in SG can I buy the replacement plastic tap? Anyone knows? I have bought it once in KL but now pecah again :(
  9. My bathroom sink plug is one that you push down to seal and then push down again to open and let the water drain. The black rubber seal has broken and so doesn't seal off the water. Anyone know where I can buy a replacement rubber seal. Thanks..
  10. I have a 7 month old battery which is almost flat, (warranty is 1 year ) When for a replacement, According to the shop it is "new" replacement, But that "New" battery only lasted 1 month and I felt the car battery is weak again When back to the same shop to check, They used the meter to check and confirm it good and new. Claim that the fault is with my car. My car was unable to start on one occasion and needed another car to jump start it. But after difficulty cranking start for another week I when to another shop to check. The battery was indeed week and need replacement, I also noted that the new shop used 600A to test my battery instead of 60A which the original shop use. After replacing the "New" battery all the problem are gone. I also found that the "new" battery have a marking which is 1 years old, So the replacement battery was actually a used battery. to the shop who sold me that battery and to the kind of services provided.
  11. Hi folks! I am currently planning for battery replacement and am looking for a maintenance free battery for my Aveo. Are there any good recommendations around? I am looking for a 55 to 65AH maintenance free (non-wet) type with battery status indicator that fits into my Aveo bracket. Currently, I am using the Delkor 55AH maintenace free battery with indicator, and it has been serving me well for the past 18 months. Is this brand good? Should I get back this brand? Should I just get it at Starsauto during my next servicing coming up in a few weeks time? Is it going to be very much more expensive than outside? If not, what are your recommendations with considerations to the followings: - Battery brand; - Reliability of Shop (inclusive of installation); - Price; - Rating of battery (no ICE, just the stock set); - Location of the shop; Alternatively, as I am an AAS member, should I just wait for it to die one fine day, and call AA to replace? What are their charges, and do I still get to choose my battery? I know I can use the search, and I've been keeping an eye on the battery threads. However, I feel that these things changes very fast: - reliable shops can become unreliable overnight; - Battery quality may change overnight; - Prices of batteries may change over time; - I am not Luke; - The force isn't with me; Hopefully, you all can help this clueless soul make a hassle free change of battery and keep it going for the next 18 months. Thanks!

  17. So my Finevu CR300HD and CR500HD battery went dead. Thatz the normal thing for Finevu car cameras with lithium polymer batteries. After reading dashcam forum on how others replace their battery, I going to replace mine my way. I was thinking, since the lithium polymer will be dead in one year's time, why not just solder a connect and replace the battery externally. Much easier than open up the camera again. So my journey starts : Forum read was here : https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/problem-with-the-finevu-cr-300hd-internal-battery.1083/ Detailed instructions of how to strip the camera here : http://www.blackboxmycar.com/blogs/news/10846777-battery-replacement-instruction I opened up mine as per above instructions. Remove the battery, de-solder the circuit board from the battery and solder the JST connector wires. Using my dremel, I drilled a nice clean hole thru the two casings.

  21. when you are dealing with OPC, esp related to number plate, it is a pain, due to the security seal. was told to replace this during inspection. but to replace means i gotta spend $200 to get the seal broken at LTA, replace the plates then go back to LTA to reapply the seal. that is extremely expensive for plate replacement. are there cheaper alternative besides hand painting the numbers with white paint? i heard of stickers. but scared those will peel after awhile. and BTW, how much does those stickers cost? any idea? Any advise is welcomed.
