  3. I'm nearly hit by a car because it made an illegal u turn along Scotts road, should I make report to traffic police to teach this driver a lesson? I got the car plate number SGU XXXX. Police would like to clarify that anyone may report a traffic violation at any police station, neighbourhood police centre or neighbourhood police post. We will investigate the violation accordingly and may request the complainant's assistance to testify in court where necessary.
  4. Recently I noticed that quite a number of OPC car drivers drove their cars during peak hours without using a valid coupon. Yesterady morning (05Jul Saturday) at around 10am, I walked pass a black OPC chevrolet Aveo which was parked along the Yew Tee Close near the MRT station and noticed that the driver didn't put a coupon on its windows. I passed the same area at around 7.30am that morning to buy newspapers and had not seem the Aveo then. So it's obviously that the car was driven down there and parked between 7.30am and 10am! I didn't think the driver was foolish enough to hide or take the coupon with him/her after parked the car. So the only explaination was he/she didn't use a coupon that day. Then it suddenly occured to me that I should report it! But at the same time, I was guessing that the (quite new) Vveo's owner could be a very young chap who can barely afford a small opc. What I choose to do could bring him/her into big financial trouble. Well, you may say the chap deserves the punishment since he/she chose to break the law and I 100% agree with you. But having witnessed a few young friends who had experienced some financial troubles only because of the stupid mistakes they made, I really cannot decide if I should do the reporting thing. I thought it for a few seconds and walked away - would you do the same? or would you choose to report it? And where you would report it? Really hope that a friend of the Aveo's driver can give him/her the warning! The ironic thing was that just as I was walking away wondering if I was a stupid busybody, another silver colour OPC car zoom passed me on the same street! As you have guessed it, it didn't display any coupon neither.

In spite of slash-and-burn promotions, for the entire industry U.S. light-vehicle sales last month were down 18.3% from 2007 to 1,189,108. For the first half, sales were down 10.1%, to 7,411,682, according to Woodcliff Lake (N.J.)-based AutoData. For all of 2008, industry forecasters said that puts auto sales on track for sales of around 14.5 million, the worst finish in 15 years. Some Good, Mostly Bad News But there was one, albeit slim, ray of hope. Honda (HMC), which includes Honda and Acura, scratched out a meager 1.1% sales improvement, to a June record 142,539. Sales of its tiny Fit model more than doubled, to 10,003 for the month, the company said. Sales of its popular Accord were also strong, posting a 9% gain over June 2007. Like every other maker, its pickups tanked, with sales of the Ridgeline plummeting -41.5% for the month. Nevertheless, for the first half, Honda was up 4.1%, to 798,358. Following the trend this year, sales of traditional full-size pickups and SUVs are off the most, in favor of more fuel-efficient small cars. But most troubling of all for the industry are the customers who simply aren't buying anything, despite rising discounts. "If the overall market is 14 million, that's 3 million less than it was just a couple of years ago. That's going to put pressure on every segment of the market, not just trucks," says Mark LaNeve, vice-president, General Motors North America vehicle sales, service, and marketing. That said, U.S. light-truck sales dropped 28.4% in June to 528,060, AutoData said. But car sales were also down 7.9% from the year-ago month, to 661,048. Special Offers Fall Flat General Motors' (GM) sales fell 18.2% in June from the year-ago month, to 262,329. GM results would have been even worse, only the company unveiled a "72-hour sale" in the last few days of the month, offering 0% financing for up to 72 months, to get an early start on clearing out 2008 models. The company has extended the sale through the long July 4 weekend. "The older models are not going to get any prettier or less expensive as the summer moves on," LaNeve says. "Right now is the best time to move them. Every day that goes by, theoretically, it gets more expensive to move them," with discounts, he says.   7. ST 26/5/08 FROM Sunday, motorists must report all accidents - no matter how minor - to their respective insurers within 24hours or part of their no-claims discount (NCD) will be docked. Worse, their insurers might not cover them if a claim is filed against them. This tough stance is the latest attempt by the insurance industry to curb runaway claims, which drove motor underwriting losses to a five-year high of $103.2 million last year. The picture continues to look bleak this year: In the first quarter, motor-underwriting losses hit $35.3 million - nearly treble that for the same period last year. Insurers reckon inflated claims are a major cause. These claims are often filed well after an accident. Although it has long been a legal requirement to report all accidents, this is the first time insurers are insisting on a 24-hour timeframe so 'fresh information' is at hand. Insurers also believe people are less likely to lie or have less chance to collaborate with workshops to submit inflated claims within the first 24hours of an accident. In announcing the new step, the General Insurance Association (GIA) - which represents about 30 motor insurers here - said on Monday that car owners will lose 10 percentage points of their NCD if they do not comply. NCDs are given annually to motorists who have not made accident claims, up to a maximum of 50 per cent of their annual premium. So a motorist who pays a premium of $500 after a 50 per cent NCD and does not report an accident to his insurer within 24hours would have to pay $600 the next time he renews his policy. Motorists with no NCD will not suffer this penalty, but the GIA warned that those who do not comply with the new rule are in breach of policy terms and an insurer would have the right to refuse their claims.

In a report done by German institute concerning Bittorrent blocking activities in various parts of the world, StarHub has been named as one of the few ISPs in the world that engages in Bittorrent traffic blocking. According to the report, StarHub is actively blocking users from uploading data to other users, which in turn slows down Bittorrent download speeds. Do note that the study also states this blocking is different from active throttling that ISPs may also do. Furthermore, this is not the end all conclusive report, as they are still fine tuning the data collection and analysis methods. Max Planck Institute - More than 8,000 users from locations around the world have used our tool, Glasnost, to test whether their BitTorrent traffic is being manipulated. On this page, we present preliminary results from these tests. The tests were conducted between March 18th and May 15th 2008. We will update this page with more detailed results as we get more data from the tests. We also hope to uncover more cases of blocking as we refine our measurement tool and our analysis. HWZ.com has also checked with StarHub and has gotten the following reply from the StarHub spokesperson regarding the above issue: "It is a known fact that P2P traffic is bandwidth intensive and can use up significant network resources. Hence, all ISPs employ bandwidth management tools to ensure that all traffic is given equal priority such that the service expectations of their online users are met. We do not specifically block P2P traffic. Like all ISPs in the world, we do, however, employ bandwidth management tools to ensure that all our customers receive an optimal surfing experience."
  9. Tuesday 9.50pm Did anyone saw this incident at Aljunied town council outside just opposite the serangoon bus interchange? I believe alot saw the incident as there are alot ppl waiting for their bus. 2 Saloon car cornered one VAN by blocking van front and back. The front car people open the door and down came 4 man with iron rod the back car open door and get down too. After that they take iron rod and whack the van mirror and ask he come down scolding very loud vulgarities.But the van owner did not get out of the car instead he drive across the pavement and slam the door of the front car and speed away. After that the 2 car give chase and beat 2 red lights to chase. Then after that no see anything already. The door of the saloon car was smashed badly by the van till almost want drop liao. While the 2 saloon car was speeding after the van there is a short siren. Duno are they CID or loanshark who chasing after money.......... Shock to see this happening....in SG

Mr Chia Hong Boon was driving along the Central Expressway towards Tampines Expressway at about 5am when he noticed a driver driving in an unsteady manner. The 27-year-old then followed the car from a distance and called the police for assistance. Mr Chia alerted the police again when the other driver drove into an open carpark at Blk 231, Ang Mo Kio St 22. While waiting for the police to arrive, Mr Chia kept watch.   11. Another hour plus to the budget report...... Whether how its going to be is everyone guess as US & Europe are heading for ressession. Goods news could be the import tax & road tax for vehicles, personnal income tax....etc to be reduced. Bad news is that cig & liquor tax to be increased, more ERP gantries to collect revenue for more MRT lines coming up. Before the budget even annouced, Universities fee had gone up by 5 to 20 %

  16. There is a very noisy motorbike around my block, I believe with modified exhaust. The driver is very considerate, he will rev the engine on purpose when moving off or returning, so loud that he can wake up the whole block. Sometime ard 2am !!! Any idea how to get LTA to check his motorbike ?

Read in today edition of The New Paper that the furore over a trishaw rider being bullied by three British tourists has now spread to their home country after a national newspaper picked up The New Paper report. The Daily Mail reported how the men mocked 67-years-old trishaw rider and then escaped in a taxi without paying him. The popular tabloid mentioned how a video of the inciodent posted on YouTube had sparked outrage among Singaporeans. Its online version has a link to the YouTube video. Bloggers in the UK have also responded by criticising the tourists for their thoughtless actions. Responding to The Daily Mail report, one reader, Brian of Bournemouth, wrote: "Makes you ashamed to be British - this is the product of our education system." The outrage has also spread to other parts of the globe as Netizens (New Zealand) responded directly on YouTube or wrote to The New Paper. As someone who drove many times Galant 2.0AT, Lancer MT/AT, Colt AT, Corolla MT/AT, Altis AT, Vios AT, Alfa 147 1.6MT, and can sort of appreciate 'soul' and 'passion' in alfa speak, I test drove Avante 1.6 and 2.0 today. (not bashing Hyundai or Avante, just trying to give my objective view). Verdict: Bland. 1.6 Very similar to Altis, in that it's a get-you-from-pt-A-to-B kinda car, but differs in that the engine is louder, and acceleration is linear. Need to go step by step as it climbs up, cannot skip any steps. Otherwise, except that I find the interior plastic a bit cheaper, it is very similar to Altis. Steering is very light at low speed (in my opinion, good esp for parking). $60,398 list price (w/Sunroof) with $2K no-questions-asked discount. all colors available (in-stock) except metalic sand (aka champagne) which Komoco does not bring in. 2.0 during acceleration, power below 2.5K RPM is similar to 1.6 model. then it jumps to 3.5-4K RPM and power kicks in (and engine screams appropriately). all this is during i almost floor the pedal. $67,398 list price (w/Sunroof) with $2K no-questions-asked discount. only silver and indigo blue available (in-stock), SE cannot give me a date if i choose to wait for a diff color. Sunroof Sunroof is two layers: external glass 'door', and internal fabric 'door'. the latter you've to open manually. external door, you control by 3 buttons. 1) open, to slide door back, 2) tilt (to get reverse air intake), and 3) close, to slide door forward. when opened, there is a wind deflector, so there won't be mad rush of wind into the cabin at highway speeds. everything is as per standard in-built sunroof that i had previously, except that when both doors are closed, and i press OPEN to open external door, by right, external door should drag internal door to open as well. in Avante, this does not happen. die die, internal door must be opened manually. and bec sunroof extends slightly beyond the back of your driver seat, your arm motion is slightly awkward, at least for me. as per the list price, the sunroof costs $2K. summary: $7K diff for an engine that feels diff only above 3.5K RPM (and of cos the exterior color) COE: 3-bid non-guaranteed. Financing: Maybank (default) or DBS. 2.8% interest regardless of loan amount and period. Insurance: HSBC. Age group: 36-40. $893/yr for 1.6 model, $1,131/yr for 2.0 model. Example: $60398 minus $2000 discount minus $10K down gives $48398. Loan 2.8% for 8 years gives $618 monthly. all above without negotiation.
