  1. I entered Johor thru Tanjong Kupang on 13 Feb, i remembered I did tap my TnG card at the immigration booth. But when I check my TnG card account now, there is no RM20 transaction, though all the toll charges for that day was reflected in my account. So is the road charge still in effect or just waived for CNY period ? Anyone notice the same?
  2. Story is developing. SINGAPORE - The police are responding to a suspected hostage situation in Jurong West. A man, believed to be armed, has taken an unidentified number of people hostage, The Straits Times understands. ST understands that the police are currently on the scene at the third floor of Block 114, Ho Ching Road. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/suspected-hostage-situation-in-ho-ching-road-man-believed-to-be-armed?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&xtor=CS1-10
  3. Has anyone serviced their car here before? It's located just behind Shell Station along Ganges Ave beside a Chinese temple (opposite the famous Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh) How's the workmanship/price etc.? Realised it's quite near to me ... thought of sending my car there for servicing

  5. There has been an increase in road works recently.... there was so much digging here n there to lay/maintain underground cables causing lane closures n jams......... but the worst thing is the road reinstatement..... Most were not done properly and caused very bumpy roads..... generally the poor reinstatement are all over the island, but one of the most obvious one i encountered was Somerset rd (near 313)..... ANd there was this HUGE depression when i drive out of prince edward carpark towards ECP city.... To tink that CH 8 just telecast the variety show with Brian Wong working with LTA on the roadworks and showing how they lay the road etc......
  6. Hi, wondering if anyone here park before at the environment building at scott road before?
  7. 42 more days to X'mas and let's dwell into the good moods today ! A short walk-about from WheelLock Place / Ion Shopping Mall towards Plaza Singapura. For those who are abroad or too reluctant to visit the always-crowded Orchard road, you can get a virtual view from here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D66Ru8Ar0ns&t=12s
  8. http://www.mycarforum.com/blog/12/entry-3811-car-sharing-does-not-reduce-road-use/ Car-sharing does not reduce road use By ST_Opinion on 15 Dec 2014 in Engine, Hybrid/electric cars, Motoring, Discussions, Singapore car news, Other News, Other blogs, ST Opinion How would an electric car- sharing scheme further our ambition to be "car-lite"? In short, it does not. Car-sharing schemes, electric or otherwise, will actually lead to higher utilisation of road space, not less. And as the whole purpose of going "car-lite" is to put a cap on congestion, car-sharing does not quite serve the cause. Former Transport Minister Raymond Lim told Parliament in 2010: "From an overall transport perspective, more people sharing a car in effect increases the use of that car." Furthermore, Singapore already has an absolute cap on its car population, via the vehicle quota system. In countries where there is no such control, a car-sharing scheme might conceivably reduce overall car demand marginally. Not so in Singapore, where the quota system has been in place since 1990. In Singapore, car-sharing schemes will only lead to a greater demand for road space. If the end goal is to reduce demand for road space, then we need to ramp up our public transport system, improve how our taxis are deployed, and make it easier for people to share rides. Ride-sharing - or car-pooling as it is more commonly called - reduces demand for road space. So, why are we launching an electric car-sharing scheme? One theory is that it is another way for us to assess the viability of electric cars here. The first $20 million "test-bed" led by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) ended with pretty watery findings. Examples include:Electric vehicles are "technically feasible" in Singapore, because the average distance clocked in the trial was 46km a day. This is less than the national average of 50km for a conventional passenger car, and much lower than the manufacturers' declared range of 120-160km per charge. (The average distance clocked by car owners is a long known fact, and there is no reason to doubt an electric car owner would behave differently.)High purchase price was the top inhibiting factor cited by consumers. (There has already been clear evidence of this in other markets.)Range anxiety was the next major concern. (Another well-documented fact.)Electric cars are expensive compared to conventional cars primarily because of their high open market value. (Yet another known fact.)A cost-benefit analysis showed that the health-care savings arising from the clean mode of transport would not be sufficient to offset the high cost of electric cars. (This is probably the most interesting finding, but the EMA did not elaborate despite repeated requests.)Another $75 million in tax dollars have been set aside to put more than 1,200 green vehicles on the road. Sources say the electric car-sharing scheme would account for the bulk of the budget. But despite having been on the drawing board for over a year, the initiative is still stuck in neutral gear. Life! understands that the Land Transport Authority and Economic Development Board - which will be spearheading the plan - have not yet called for an RFI (request for information). As such, the scheme is unlikely to take off anytime soon. According to industry players, one of the stumbling blocks is the different charging cables used by various manufacturers from China, Europe and the United States. This makes setting up a public charging infrastructure that can be used by one and all a costly affair. Even if Singapore were to adopt the latest European convention, the new cable is different from those used by cars involved in the first test-bed. That might render an entire network of three-year-old charging stations obsolete. One view is that Singapore should forget about setting up a public charging infrastructure. As the first trial showed, the average driving distance for an electric car is less than half the range of a fully charged vehicle. The Government should just leave it to the private sector to decide how it wants to provide charging facilities to customers. And instead of another tax-funded trial to see if electric vehicles are viable, the carbon emissions-based vehicle scheme (CEVS) should be enhanced to give due recognition to cars with substantial environmental and health contributions. Today, CEVS rebates are granted too freely. Having said all that, car-sharing still has a role here. Not so much as a transport solution, but a social one. Car- sharing indirectly placates the person who is priced out of the car market. But the way we have been operating car-sharing thus far is inefficient. In Europe, car-sharing plans rely on smartphone apps that tell users at a glance the availability of cars in the vicinity. Users can then book an available car with a touch of the screen. There is no need for designated parking spaces and other logistical requirements. In Singapore, where carpark spaces are as precious as road space, reserving lots for car-sharing schemes is just not possible. -- PHOTO: BLOOMBERG by Christopher Tan how come never sexplain why car sharing will increase road use?

  13. Would like to know if it is possible to get a road tax refund because roads are not up to standard? The number of roads on construction has increased and caused damage to car suspensions and caused hazards. Ie the workers anyhow place the cones and reduce the lane size and put concrete anywhere and. Then the sign "urgent road works" always have urgent construction? In addition There are big rocks on the road - could cause massive damage if your tyre were to go on it or hit your bottom of the car. The arrows of the roads are also not properly painted after construction - causing possible confusion. The old arrow marks are not removed either Any one has an idea why they make the road in an S shape? Thanks

  15. Watched plenty of war movies, most famous of course was Black Hawk Down, with the ubiquitous Humvee (actual abbreviation is HMMWV for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) seen all over the battlefield as the basic utility jeep for the US forces and then I saw this at a car park: Sua ku never seen this HUMMER H3 before but know that it was made by the same company that churns out the Humvees. From One Motoring website, read that this is a 3.653L monster jeep with a maximum laden weight of 2660 kg and unladen weight of 2231 kg. A petrol guzzler yes? Wonder what is its present OMV...
  16. http://news.xin.msn.com/en/singapore/amendments-to-road-traffic-bill-proposed-in-parliament SINGAPORE: Multitasking drivers beware - under a new bill proposed in Parliament on Monday (Aug 4), it may soon be an offence to use any communicative function of your phone while driving. This includes not just calling and texting a person which were an offence in the original bill, but surfing the internet and downloading material. Drivers guilty of such an offence may be fined a maximum of S$1,000, imprisoned for up to six months, or both. Repeat offenders will receive a fine not exceeding S$2,000, imprisoned for up to 12 months, or both. The new rules would apply to tablet computers, not just mobile phones. However, the proposed law only applies if the driver is holding the device in at least one hand, and does not cover the use of such devices while driving, should they be mounted on the dashboard or windscreen of vehicles. Drivers Channel NewsAsia spoke to were in favour of the changes, but felt that it should be further expanded. "If you're playing with your phone regardless whether you're talking on the phone or searching for something, it's still very hazardous. Like me, I don't touch my phone while driving. I just put it aside," one driver shared. "I can just have it mounted and still type on the phone. It defeats the whole purpose of having the law in the first place," noted another. "It's just like looking at your GPS - you'll lose concentration. So I think it's best to totally not use it," concluded another driver. Other proposed changes to the bill include allowing drivers to attend a voluntary corrective training course called the Safe Driving Course. Drivers who have half or more of their maximum allowable demerit points will get to remove three demerit points should they pass the Course. Foreigners holding work passes who need to drive as part of their job must also obtain a local driving licence, within six months of the pass being issued. Drivers will also be held responsible for providing particulars to the owner of any vehicle or structure damaged, following an accident. - CNA/kk

  18. Do you guys usually bring along your dash cam while having a road trip abroad. For whatever reason, maybe as for memories or for insurance claim in case somethings happen. Do you took the DVR in your current ride or just keep a spare one for such trip? I also wonder if using an action cam for such purpose will be better than a DVR?
