  1. Not so long ago, I tried to remind you to keep away from a country such as Russia. Thing is, the people - well mostly - seem really reckless there, especially while driving. It isn't that hard at all to find videos to prove this theory. Now, another incident - a tragic one too - has taken place in which I believe quite a number of people wonder how the country actually functions. While it may seem just like another car crash, this one is a lot more awful. In the video, we can see a Ferrari 458 Italia rear ending a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Judging from the fact that the rear bumper of the Mercedes was entirely ripped apart, I believe you have a good idea regarding the speed the Ferrari driver must have been driving at the moment. Amazingly, though, neither the Ferrari driver nor the Mercedes driver got seriously hurt. Yet, what was really tragic was the fact that the Italian supercar had actually knocked over a pedestrian, Nariman Gaynulov, 62, before crashing into the said Mercedes. As it turned out, the man driving the Ferrari 458 Italia is Larion Vuokila, 23, son of Alexander Zajonc, a Russian billionaire. Despite not getting seriously hurt, Vuokila was taken to the hospital soon after the incident. However, he tried to escape but has now been arrested by the police. I am not really sure what actually happened to Vuokila seconds before the crash. Was it that he tried to beat the red light? Or, was the crash triggered by Vuokila losing control of his supercar? Well, it seems like we
  2. If you want to find footages showing the most temperamental people on planet Earth, Russia is definitely the way to go. There have been numerous videos spread on the World Wide Web showing how messed up things in the country are. As a matter of fact, don't you even wonder how it functions as a country after watching those videos? Yet again, it seems that the people living there just never learn or they simply don't want to change. A video has been filmed again recently, showing how simply passing the road can turn into a fight that involves fists and even guns altogether in the middle of the city traffic! Therefore, even if you have the money to go and live in Russia, I would say that you better not think about it. Whereas road rage will turn into horns honking at most on our shores, the Russians aren't the type that takes things lightly, that's for sure.
  3. A comprehensive navigation system has become a standard for most, if not all, of today's cars. However, the same can't be said of motorcycles, at least not yet. With that being said, a motorcyclist will have to go through all the difficulties in reading a paper map if he wants to get the right direction to where he's heading. But now, things are about to change, thanks to a Russian company. This company is planning to come up with a solution known as the LiveMap. Featuring an earphone, a microphone, a light sensor, and - the best part - a micro display, this navigation system will project directions in the form of a heads-up display, just like what we can find featured in today's fighter jets. How cool does that sound? Unlike Google Glass - which projects images on the upper right hand side, the LiveMap will project directions right on the centre of the visor of the helmet the motorcyclist is wearing. And, thanks to the light sensor, the directions on the visor will remain transparent regardless of whether it is in the day or night. I would say that this is absolutely important as it ensures safety. A digital compass and an integrated gyroscope are also in place to make sure that the motorcyclist gets the correct orientation of the projection displayed on his visor, even if he's leaning the bike or tilting his head. Wow, this is yet another cool feature to anticipate, isn't it? But then, there's another problem, what about the power supply the helmet is going to need? Well, counting on a couple of lithium-ion batteries, the Russian company behind the solution claims that the helmet is likely to last a day. However, a USB charge plug will also come in handy should the motorcyclist require extra juice. How does this augmented-reality helmet sound? Well, if you're interested, you may want to help make it become a reality as the company is currently trying to raise US$150,000 (S$191,235) via Indiegogo. That amount is required to build a prototype that should work as expected. Then, if everything goes well, one of this LiveMap helmets may demand around US$2,000 (S$2,550) from any motorcyclist interested in it. Of course, there're always chances that prices may go down, even if we may have to wait for another decade.
  4. Bespoke automaker Rolls-Royce Motor Cars celebrated the opening of its new showroom in the famous city of St. Petersburg in Russia. The new showroom will help serve increasing demand for Phantom and Ghost models and will provide the most discerning clientele in the region, with direct access to the pinnacle super luxury brand. The dealership is located at the Astoria Hotel in one of the European cultural capitals, and will be under the fine care of Tatiana Fitzgerald - who is also the Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Moscow. The unique Rolls-Royce Bespoke personalisation service will also be available from the new showroom, underlining the further growing popularity of this service among owners in Russia. Nearly all Phantom family models and three out of every four Ghosts contain some element of individuality. Wraith, the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history, was presented at the grand opening in St. Petersburg, for the first time by the shores of the Baltic Sea. The ultimate Gran Turismo combines super luxury and refinement with power, style and drama. The bold, charismatic lines of Wraith are a brave step forward for Rolls-Royce and the car has received overwhelming feedback since its debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2013. Torsten Muller-Otvos, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, commented, "St. Petersburg, with its timeless beauty and elegance, forms the ideal backdrop to stage Rolls-Royce motor cars in this outstanding showroom. Our presence here marks an important milestone in the sustained development of Rolls-Royce in Russia." He added, "I am particularly pleased to see that a team with a proven track record in the world of super luxury will take care of the customers in and around St. Petersburg. Tatiana and her team have a wealth of experience and will add great momentum to the sphere of luxury in the Leningrad region." Tatiana Fitzgerald commented, "Rolls-Royce has a very rich history in St. Petersburg and is where the first Rolls-Royce touched Russian ground more than 100 years ago. We are really excited to write the next chapter of the Rolls-Royce story in Russia." Last year, Rolls-Royce celebrated a third consecutive record year as 3,575 cars were delivered to customers across the world, marking the highest annual sales in the 109-year history of the brand - with Russia continuing to be the best selling market in Continental Europe. 19 of the 107 dealerships in the world are located in Europe, including the new St. Petersburg showroom.
  5. I bet you don't get to see that much when a traffic police officer goes against a scooter running at what seems to be a full speed. Honestly, it's the first time I stumbled upon such an occasion. But again, as I mentioned in the title, this is another Russian oddity. In case you haven't noticed, the Russians seem the best to go for when you're looking for some odd mishaps - you might want to check out this Hummer video as well. There's no exact word on what reason the police officer had in mind when he intended to stop the scooter. Most likely, though, the scooter rider had violated some traffic laws. Nevertheless, it seems that the Russians should teach their police officers a better way of stopping someone, especially one who's driving or riding on a vehicle. So, thing is, the police officer tried to stop the fast running scooter head on and I fail to figure out why this method seemed preferable to the officer in question. It's out of the question that this might as well lead to death or, at least, massive body injuries (you can see the officer finding it hard to get up in the video). Fortunately, the police officer didn't cause the scooter rider to lose his life. Had he done so, instead of enforcing the law, he would have had to go to prison. You know, instead of trying to tackle the scooter head on, the police officer could have achieved the very same result - yet with less risk of injuries, at least to himself - by stepping away from the scooter and kicking it hard sideways, preferably into the vehicle's front wheel. In that way, the runaway rider would be likely to lose his front wheel and would have been the only one to suffer from injuries. The officer, on the other hand, wouldn't have suffered from any at all and would still manage to stop both the scooter and the rider quite effectively. However, again, you can see in the video that, thanks to the officer's weird and ridiculous decision (at least so it seems to me), it happened the other way round. The scooter rider seemed unscathed at all while the officer, as I said earlier, could barely get back on his feet.
  6. It's no longer a secret that Hummer is no longer in production today. Yet, does it ever come across your mind what the real reason is? Well, while some may say it's because of the rather old fashioned look the model sports, we'll say that it's because the Hummer H2 is actually a disguise of some sort of an old Chevrolet Tahoe, for example. Unfortunately, the Russians didn't actually know what the Hummer was all about, at least not until this hilarious Russian video went live on the internet. Well, considering they're half the world apart, it may be understandable. However, after watching this video, you should realise that instead of being a dream American All-Wheel Drive (AWD) V8 'conquer-any-terrain-and-obstacle' vehicle, the Hummer H2 is actually a go-nowhere vehicle. Just imagine, the car can't even climb a small concrete block. As you can see in the video, the Hummer drivetrain sends power to the rear instead of the front tyres, which is a clear reason it isn't climbing the concrete block. Eventually, as you can tell, the rear tyres go deeper into the snow and just remain there. Hilarious!
  7. [extract] The term four door coupe has been recently used to describe luxury sedans with a coupe-like dimension. Typically, they have a low roof design which reduces towards the rear part of the car. Some examples are the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, Audi A7 and the Volkswagen CC. These models are normally seen as high-end range cars but a small Russian company has unveiled a model touted as the world

  12. Lada comes back from the future with Xray concept which is probably the best design Russia has ever produced besides the Marussia supercars. Is a new auto industry emerging from a country which has an expanding car market? Russian auto giant AvtoVAZ debuted the Lada Xray concept crossover at the 2012 Moscow Auto Show. The concept's name is derived from the X-shape on its face, which looks like the Spindle grille of Lexus. For some reason AvtoVAZ is not putting the Xray up for production though the new look might be the new family face for future production vehicles by 2015. The Xray concept was designed by Steve Mattin, AvtoVAZ's new design chief who penned the 1997 Mercedes-Benz A-Class and current Volvo XC60. The British-born Mattin was also the former vice president and design director of Volvo Cars. "It's got a fairly long heritage and is a key player in the Russian market, it's an interesting time." Mattin said in an interview. Picture credit: Autoblog Exterior Interior

  14. The ongoing 16th Moscow International Auto Salon (2012 MIAS) is expected to draw more than 1 million visitors whom can browse many new models and concepts including 23 world, 21 European and 85 Russian premieres. Russia with a population of 140 million has an improving economy, where a large number commute by driving old cars. Automakers have an oppurtunity to tap into this market with noteworthy premieres like the new Mazda6 and the facelifted Audi R8. Well, I'm not here to talk about the cars, but to present the equally beautiful booth babes and models that were present. Like any other motor show, there wasn't a drought of beautiful women at the show and here are some that caught my eye. Picture credit: Carscoop

    Renault

Despite all the gloom and doom in Europe, French automaker, Renault, posted a respectable first-half performance that beats the forecast by analysts. Earnings before interest, taxes and one-time items dropped 23 percent to 482 million euros from 630 million euros a year ago. This figure beats the average 363 million euros estimated by seven analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. The better-than-expected performance is supported by the increased sales in Latin America and Russia. Renault sales in Latin America rose 20 percent to 215,149 vehicles, while deliveries in Russia and other former Soviet states jumped 29 percent to 103,926. "Management has a very good focus on all the important issues," said Kristina Church, a Barclays analyst in London who awarded an 'overweight rating' on Renault
  16. Over the years, Audi has created some remarkable machines, like the R8, the A5, A5/A7 Sportback or even its Quattro concept or E-Tron concept vehicles. Having said that, a Russian design student from the Moscow State Technical University has envisioned a flagship sports saloon for his final thesis project. Dubbed the R9, the design study was imagined as Audi's version of the Lamborghini Estoque, with design inspiration from Audi's vast range of cars. The R9 is has a front-mounted engine equipped with Audi's Quattro system. What do you guys think? Though the front end isn't appealing I generally like the shape and profile and it does look a little too Lamborghini isn't it? Credits: Vasiliy Markin via Cardesign

  22. On 18 November 2011, BMW opened its second dedicated BMW M dealership in St. Petersburg, Russia. The first dedicated BMW M Showroom was launched in Singapore in August 2010. St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia after Moscow with a population of 4.8 million residents, and the sixth largest market for M automobiles. Called the Park M, the latest M dealership is responsible for the sales and maintenance of BMW M models. Alexander Bystrov, Park M Managing Director has the following comments: "Our dealership is located in a new business district of St. Petersburg where young, modern business people leave and work. For them, speed, power and prestige are important in a car. You will find all this and more in the unique products of BMW M." The most widely sold M automobile in Russia is the BMW X6 M.
